Frank E. McKnight Sr.
Frank E. McKnight Sr., 71, of Hurricane died May 25, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a native of Charleston, a former resident of St. Albans and a 43-year resident of Hurricane. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, a former pharmacist with Cohen Drug Company and a retired manager and pharmacist from the Kmart Corporation. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Betty L. McKnight; son, Frank E. McKnight Jr. at home; daughter, Mrs. Teresa Barron of Hurricane; three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Presbyterian Church of Covenant, Hurricane, with the Rev. Rob Laukoter officiating. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.
Mina Young
Mina Setliff Young, 82, of Hurricane died May 26, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was born May 13, 1919 in Fraziers Bottom, a daughter of the late James I. and Rosetta Nida Setliff. She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her twin brother, Manual Setliff, brother, Gilbert Steliff, and sisters, Mary Hodge, Garnet Romine, Essie Faulkner and Allie Doss.
Surviving: husband, Ray Young; sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon and Gale Grant of Hurricane and Johnny and Carol of Logan, Ohio; daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Donald Hodges of Winfield and Peggy and Lloyd Hinkle of Obetz, Ohio; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Doris Young of Hurricane and Jack and Barbara Young of Milton; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Kledith Chapman, Betty and Glenn Gibson, Jean and Jack Cark, all of Hurricane, Lovetta “Lovey” and Henry Burnett of Bluffington, South Carolina; sisters, Lottie Cointer of Culloden, Vada Wray and Vonda Hinkle, both of Lesage; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, May 28, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial was in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom.
Hattie Marie Wood
Hattie Marie Wood, 69, of Hurricane died May 26, 2001, at home after a long illness.
She was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist and John Henson Senior Center Choir, an alto singer with the McCallister Gospel Trio and a lifetime resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: daughters, Violet Sheets and Bonnie Niel of Hurricane; son, Freddie Wood of Hurricane; brother, Dewey McCallister of Hurricane; sisters, Ruby Vance of Tornado and Fay Johnson of Hurricane; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurricane, with Pastor Mark Hesson officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Belva Phillips
Mrs. Belva “Bub” McKneely Phillips, 88, of Bancroft died May 29, 2001, after a long illness.
Service was held Friday, June 1, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Carl Arthur officiating.
Virginia G. Sergent
Virginia G. Sergent, 76, of Red House died May 29, 2001, at her residence after a long illness.
She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Surviving: brothers, Danny Carte of Buffalo and Okey Carte, Jr. of Elkview; sister, Iva Lou Fields of North Carolina.
Service was held Friday, June 1, 2001, at Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, with the Rev. Wayne Stewart officiating. Burial was in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney.
Dorma D. Kinder
Dorma Dean Kinder, 60, of Hurricane died in Cabell Huntington Hospital on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of the Hurricane area.
Surviving: husband, Charles; sons, Michael Lee Kinder of Hometown and David Louis Kinder of Charleston; daughter, Billie Jo Fontalbert of Marment; sisters, Ann Spurlock of Huntington, Marion Jenkins of Milton and Tammy McCallister of Salt Rock; six grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Carolyn Sue Casto
Carolyn Sue Casto, 64, of Nitro died May 31, 2001, at home after a short illness.
She was a 29-year resident of Nitro and a homemaker. She was a Christian and attended Soul’s Harvest Fellowship in Nitro. She sang southern gospel music for over 42 years and was a former member of the Redeemers Quartet. She was a member of the Gospel Singing Jubilee Association.
Surviving: husband, Luther “Cless” Casto; sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Connie Casto of Winfield, Gregory and Terri Casto of Nitro; grandchildren, Mark, Heather and Brittany Casto; brothers, A. Frank McClanahan of Nitro and Raymond McClanahan of Gallatin, Texas; sisters, Laura Mae Alford of Hometown and Vickie Belcher of Cross Plains, Texas.
Service was held Saturday, June 2, 2001, at the Landmark Church of God, Nitro, with the Rev. Marvin Welch and the Rev. Paul Cogar officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.
Elizabeth M. Edwards
Elizabeth Maxine Edwards, 75, of Cross Lanes died May 23, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division, after a short illness.
She attended Community Chapel Church, Cross Lanes.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Edwards.
Surviving: husband, Frank Edwards; daughters, Susan Sagel and Sharon Williams; sisters, Wilma Dewees, Mary Mulea, Cecile Hefley, Myrtle Hayes, and Effie Lyons.

Imogene E. Carney
Imogene E. Carney, 82, of Poca died June 2, 2001, in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness.
She was the former owner of Petite Beauty Shop in Poca, a 55-year member of Forest Rose Rebekah Lodge No. 143 in Poca, where she was the musician and Past Nobel Grand. She was a member of and organist for Poca United Methodist Church.
Surviving: husband, Herman Carney; son, Marion “Mike” Carney of Poca; brother, Robert Spaulding of Fort Washington, Maryland; grandchildren, Michael Carney and Melissa Johnson, both of St. Albans; great-grandson, Jeffery Thaxton of St. Albans.
Service was held Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Poca United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rondal Browning and the Rev. Jonathan Nettles officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements. Paul E. Young
Paul Edward “Butch” Young, 51, died June 2, 2001, after a battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He was born in Hurricane, son of the late Paul and Nora Pate young, and was a 25-year resident of North Carolina.
He was disabled from DuPont Chemical after 25 years’ of service and was a member of the Nitro Moose Club.
Surviving: daughters, Crystal Lingner and husband, Andy, and Wendy Faircloth and husband, Buddy, all of Wilmington, North Carolina; grandchildren, Haley Nicole Faircloth and Luke Paul Young Faircloth, both of Wilmington; sisters, Myrna (John) Mitchell, Sue McGinnis, Patsy (Claxton Jr.) Smith, and Peggy (Allen) Poe; numerous nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.
Service was held Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Mr. James McGehee officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Gloria Jean Johnson
Gloria Jean Johnson, 60, of Buffalo died May 31, 2001.
Surviving: husband, Charles Johnson.

John P. Karnes
John Paul “Jay Paul” Karnes, 54, of Nitro died May 31, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital from complications of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Mr. Karnes was a lifelong resident of Nitro, a musician and a member of the American Guild of Vocal Artists. He was a former employee of Eastern Carpet and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Teays Valley Ward.
He was the son of the late John and Zelda Goodwin Karnes.
Surviving: sisters, Eunice Knight of Front Royal, Virginia, Jeannie Patton of Nitro and Joyce Beer of Chicago, Illinois; brothers, George Karnes of Longwood, Florida, Gerald Karnes and Donald Karnes, both of Nitro.

Lorraine C. McDonald
Lorraine C. McDonald, 60, of Proctorville, Ohio, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Saul Junior Simpson. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born June 28, 1940, in Laredo, W.Va, a daughter of the late Mable Williams Simms. She was also preceded in death by one son Donzel Chandler. She is survived by her husband, James H. McDonald, two daughters, Betty Davis of Proctorville and Candy Watts of Davin, W.Va.; two sons, Virgil Belcher of Huntington and Johnny Belcher of Proctorville; four sisters, Laura Robinson of Waseca, Minn., Beulah Daniels of Huntington, Dorothy Moore of Gilbert, W Va, and Cassie Jo Forrester of Jacobsburg, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
