Harold D. Bobbitt, 61, of Hurricane died August 21, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital.
Mr. Bobbitt was a 27-year resident of Hurricane and an employee of Pitney-Bowes with 27 years’ service. He was active as a board member, official and coach of the following organizations: River Cities, WV Secondary School Activities Commission, Hurricane Amateur Basketball League, the Western West Virginia Football Officials Association, and the Chemical Valley Midget Football League. He was an Army veteran and a Christian.
Surviving: wife, Dorothy Hickman Bobbitt; daughter, Sherry Elkins of Hurricane; son, David Bobbitt of Hurricane; mother, Edna Bobbitt of St. Albans; sister, Sue Bobbitt of St. Albans; grandchildren, Steven Lawson and Brittany Higginbotham.
Service was held Thursday, August 23, 2001, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Chapel, Red House, with Pastor Doyle Means officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

George F. Sergent
George F. “Fred” Sergent, 65, of Buffalo died August 20, 2001, in the Huntington VA Hospital following a long illness.
He was a retired professional truck driver, having driven for Praxair, formerly Linde. He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a member of Teamsters Local 175, Charleston.
Surviving: wife, Linda Pritt Sergent; stepsons, Alex Thompson of Charleston, Alan Thompson of Salisbury, North Carolina, and William “Tibby” Myers of Charleston; brothers, Roy E. Sergent of Tornado, Harry F. “Frank” Sergent, Charles R. “Bob” Sergent and Peter David “Dave” Sergent, all of Nitro; nine stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, August 23,, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Billy Joe Asbury officiating. Burial was in Koontz Cemetery, Clendenin.
Doris M. Persinger
Doris Mildred Persinger, 89, of Huricane died August 25, 2001, at her home after a long illness.
She was born October 7, 1911 at Scary Creek, Putnam County, to Robert and Maude Bryant. She was a lifelong resident of the county and a longtime member of the Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Persinger; and two daughters, Martha E. Quales and Margaret E. Peringer.
Surviving: sons, Charles H. “Jim” and wife, Rose, of Hurricane, Robert G. “Brownie” and wife, Georgia, of Poca, Frank and wife, Joanne of Hurricane, and John H. and wife, Chris, of Louisiana; daughters, Pauline Stewart and husband, Walter, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Catherine Elam and husband, Jack, of LeCanta, Florida, Carol Young and husband, Jim, of Culloden, and Roberta “Bobbie” Davis and husband, Bruce, of Charleston; 26 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.
Service was Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim Baker officiating. Burial was in Hurricane Cemetery.
Richard E. Bush
Richard E. Bush, 67, of Milton, WV, died Tuesday, August 21, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, August 24, 2001 at Milton Funeral Home, by the Rev. Curtis Cupp. Interment
in Culloden Cemetery. He was born May 12, 1934, in Cabell County, W.Va, a son of the late Oliver E. and Ethel Carpenter Bush. He was from the Cabell County Board of Education. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Sunderland Bush of Milton, W.Va.; daughters, Debby Crookshank of Milton, WV, Patty Midkiff of Huntington, W.Va., and DeAnn Ball Hensley of Huntington, W.Va. He is also survived by one brother, Gary Bush of Hurricane; nine grandchildren, Todd and wife Amy, Chad and wife Calley, Chris and Jeremy Crookshank, Leah, Lydia and Andrea Midkiff, Aaron and Erica Ball and two great-grandsons, Tanner and Cy.
Ivan W. Manning
Ivan W. Manning, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Psalm 116:15,” 89, of Culloden, died at his home after a long illness on Wednesday, August 22, 2001. He was the son of the late William Joseph and Roma Smallridge Manning, and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Owen and Wilford Manning; three sisters, Clara Finley, Jewel Sargent and Mola Tyree Holderby; and two granddaughters, Melissa and Sherrie Manning. Funeral services were held Friday, August 24, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey Vickers Huntington; one son Gary Manning Sr. and his wife Mary Young Manning; one grandson, Gary Manning Jr. and his wife Lisa Haas Manning; two granddaughters, Peggy Chapman and her husband Bruce, and Tammy Manning; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Meghan, Kaitlyn and Logan Manning. Ivan was a member, former deacon and usher of The First Missionary Baptist Church of Culloden. He was retired from Union Carbide of South Charleston. Barbara Ann Simmons Linville, 56, of Hurricane died August 18, 2001, at Putnam General Hospital. Mrs. Linville was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was active in Cardiac Rehabilitation at Putnam General Hospital, and attended Virginia Intermont, Bristol, Virginia. She was a homemaker and a resident of Hurricane since 1970. Surviving: husband, Rodney W. Linville; father, Robert W. Simmons of Huntington; sons and daughters-in-law, Martin H. and Shawna B. Linville of Hagerstown, Maryland, and Brian E. and Angela D. Linville of Huntington; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy S. and Thomas R. Wilmink of Huntington; niece, Jane E. Wilmink of Huntington; nephews, Thomas R. Boyd Bailey, 68, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Friday, August 24, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Huntington. He was born April 26,1933, in Wayne County, a son of the late Estil and Lennie Napier Bailey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and member and head deacon of Hash Ridge Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Vickers Bailey; two daughters, Kathy Nelson of Ona and Connie Tolbert of Huntington; one son, Steve Peyton of Illinois; one sister, Thelma Butcher of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Robert and James Bailey of Kentucky and Bill Bailey of Pennsylvania; and six grandchildren.

Lisa G. Cline, 38, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Sunday, August 26, 2001, at her residence. Entombment in the White Chapel Mausoleum, White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born October 7, 1962, in Welch, W.Va., a daughter of Ruth Hatfield Phipps of Barboursville, W.Va. and the late Jack Keith Phipps. She was also preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Gracie M. Phipps and Orville J. Phipps; her maternal grandfather, John S. Hatfield; and her special cousin, Andrea Hatfield. She was a loving wife, mother and daughter, and she inspired many by giving of herself. In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband of 21 years, Mitchell J. Cline; two sons, Ashley Jordan Cline and Steven Tyler Cline, both at home; her maternal grandmother, Myrtle Mullins of Barboursville; and a sister, Cynthia L. Lester of Barboursville. Pallbearers were Ashley Jordan Cline, Steven Tyler Cline, Kevin Cline, Bryan Keith Hatfield, Kris Kiser and Justin Gue. Glenn G. Hager, 82, of Huntington, W.Va, passe away Thursday, August 23, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 25, 2001 at Reger Funeral Chapel, Huntington, by the Rev. Kevin Lantz. Entombment in Woodmere Memorial Park Abbey of Peace, Huntington. He was born May 23, 1919, in Logan County, W.Va, a son of the late Wallace E. and Hadassa Scragg Hager. He was a retired U.S. Postal Service mail carrier. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Howard P. Hall VFW Post 1064, the American Legion Post 16, and the National Association of Letter Carriers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother and four sisters. Survivors include his wife, Lillian J. Hager; one son and daughter-in-law, Harold F. and Norma J. Harper of Huntington; two grandchildren and spouses, Harold F. and Donna Harper of Huntington and Michelle and Bryan Endicott of Barboursville; three great-grandchildren, Breanne and Rachel Endicott of Barboursville and James Michael Harper of Huntington; three sisters, Bertha Long of Jacksonville, Fla., his twin sister Pearl Sallaher of Huntington and Libby Perry of Pittsburg, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Patricia Ann Lemon, 61, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2001, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born January 10, 1940, a daughter of Robert Lewis Federer Huntington and the late Anna Louise Perry Federer. In addition to she is survived by four daughters, Patricia Suzanne Young of Barboursville, Lori Ann Sinclair and Pamela Gail Mays, both of Barboursville, and Shari Blevins of Milton; two sons, Charles Thomas Lemon Jr. of Ona and Christopher Allen Lemon of Barboursville; one sister, Carolyn Sue Berry of Huntington; three brothers, Jeffrey Lynn Federer of Circleville, Ohio, James Allen Federer of Middletown, Ohio and Robert Lewis Federer Jr. of Huntington; and 13 grandchildren.
Inez Marie Ryder McFann, “Gran”
Inez Marie Ryder McFann, “Gran” of Lesage, W.Va., beloved wife of Don Wilford McFann for 75 and a half years, rested at home August 24, 2001. Gran was born March 22, 1907, in Cabell County, W.Va., the daughter of the late Jasper and Minnie Joy Ryder. Gran was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She managed the family farms, properties and business for 75 years and was a gracious hostess and homemaker. She was also a member of Mt. Union Baptist Church for many years. Gran is survived by a daughter, Betty Barbour of Huntington; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Leona McFann of Lesage; two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Theresa and Patrick Messer of Huntington and Melody and Dean Morris of Texas; three grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Rod and Teresa McFann, Rick and Alisa McFann and Jason and Lavonna McFann, all of Lesage; nine great-grandchildren, Brandie and Breyanna McFann, Joshua, Jakeb and Linzie McFann, Christopher McFann, Chance Ray Messer and Katey and Kristen Morris; and two brothers, Sylvester and Jasper Rider of Lesage. In addition to her parents, Inez was preceded in death three brothers, Raymond, Herbert and Melvin Rider; and three sisters, Eva Nowlin and Naomi and Opal Francis Ryder. James David Moore
James David Moore, 79, of Huntington, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Friday, August 24, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at Henson Mortuary, by Dr. Terrell Bradley. Entombment in White Chapel Mausoleum. James was born September 4, 1921, in Huntington, son of the late James V. and Alice Stevers Moore. He was a 1939 graduate of Huntington High School, a retired switchman for C&P Telephone, a retired maintenance supervisor at Holiday Inn Gateway and a member of Highlawn Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Garnet O’Brian, Kathleen Estep and Margaret Heron; and one grandson, Kevin Jon Bryant in January 2001. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Keister Moore; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Cagle Curtis of Huntington and Suzanne L. and Jon R. Bryant of Houston, Texas; one sister-in-law and her spouse, Margery and Paul Haas and their three children; four grandchildren, Charles G. “Chip” and wife Teena Watkeys, James David Watkeys and fiancee Michelle Taylor, Scott and wife Shannon Bryant and Jeremy Daniel Bryant; three great-grandchildren, Charles Alexander, Joshua Andrew and Anne Nichole Watkeys; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Mary E. Bolt, 68, of Hurricane died August 5, 2001, in the Arthur B. Hodges Center, Charleston, after a long illness.

Lottie “Louise” Christy
Lottie “Louise” Christy, 73, of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Eleanor, died August 4, 2001, at home following a long illness.
She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Martha Flinner, and brothers, Delbert and Robert Flinner.

Lawrence P. Perkins Sr.
Lawrence Perry Perkins Sr., 90, of Eleanor died August 5, 2001, following a long illness.
He was retired from Conrail with 31 years of service. He was a member of the Hometown Senior Center, where he was best know for his rug weaving. He attended the Midway United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mae Coulter Perkins, and his son, Leon F. Perkins.
Surviving: daughter, Yvonne M. Cain of Eleanor; sons Charles A. John Perkins and his wife, Lenore, of Buffalo and Lawrence P. Perkins Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Buffalo; brothers, Charles of Sacramento, California, Allen of Elmore, Ohio and Gale of Parkersburg; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Jim Hunt, 58, of Winfield died August 6, 2001.
He was employed at Tyler Mountain Water Company as a maintenance supervisor.

Chase Jeffrey Covert, 26 day old son of Jeffrey D. and Lori A. Grant Covert of Red House, died August 5, 2001, at Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a short illness.

Catherine E. Garrison
Catherine Elizabeth “Catty” Garrison, 73, of Ravenswood, formerly of Buffalo, died Thursday, August 9, 2001, at home after a long struggle with diabetes.
Born December 28, 1927, she was the daughter of “Griff” and Nellie Thornton. She was a member of Walker Chapel Church, Robertsburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Roma E. Garrison; her parents; brother, George Thornton; and sister, Sandra Thornton.

William D. Martin Jr.
William Donald “Billy” Martin Jr., 66, of Red House died August 11, 2001, in St. Francis Hospital following a short illness.
He was a retired tool and die maker for Volkswagen of America and the SCSM plant, South Charleston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Corbin, Kentucky.
Surviving: wife, Ida Kay Martin, sons, Billy Jr. Martin and his wife, Debbie, of Red House, Jeff Martin and his wife, Sandy, of Leon, John and his wife, Beth Eich of Cross Lanes, sister, Betty (Carl) Jackson of Minnesota; brother, Cletus (Minnie) Martin of Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Bertha, Etta and Iva, all of Kentucky; grandchildren, Will, Danielle, Emma, Ashley, Benjamin, Martin Ryne and Evan Eich; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Adkins
Mary Adkins, 97, of Huntington, widow of Cazzie Adkins, went to meet our Lord on August 11, 2001, at her residence, after an extended illness. She was born October 23, 1903 in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Peter and Hyley Ann Adkins. She was a member of Bethlehem United Baptist Church of Raccoon Creek Road, Branchland. In addition to her beloved husband, Cazzie, she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Willa Faye Adkins; four sisters, Mrs. Addie Warf, Mrs. Ida Sansom, Mrs. Janie Adkins and Josephine “Josie” Adkins. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Irene Nida of Salt Rock, Mrs. Ina Sansom and Mrs. Delephena Keesee, both of Huntington, and Mrs. Ethel Adkins of Branchland; three sons, Alfred Adkins of Barboursville, Claude Adkins of Lenore and Carlis Adkins of Ashland; 24 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, August 14, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, by the Rev. Sherwood Thompson and Rev. Danny Ross. Burial in Bartram Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Mary Adkins had a large family which dearly loved her and was dearly loved by in return. A hard-working, devoted wife will now join her loving husband, Cazzie.

Rickie Dell Adkins, 46, of Barboursville passed away August 8, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted at Sunday, August 12, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. He was born October 2, 1954, in Huntington, a son of Iva Ramey Adkins of Barboursville and the late Arnold Adkins. He was a retired carpenter with Donald R. Jordan Builders. Also surviving are his wife, Teresa Barbour Adkins; two sons, Matthew Ryan Adkins of Huntington and Justin Andrew Adkins of Barboursville; one brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Lee and Beverly Adkins of Huntington; one grandson, Ryan Bradley Adkins; several aunts, uncles, family members and friends.

Rodric R. Ball, 85, of Apple Grove, W.Va., died Wednesday, August 8, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 12, 2001, at Beard Mortuary, Huntington by the Rev. Max Spurlock and the Rev. Daniel Hodges. Burial in Mount Zion Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom, W.Va. He was born on October 24, 1915, in Mason County, W.Va., son of the late Roy Ball and Myrtia Rowsey Ball. He was a retired member of Local 132 International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a charter member and deacon of Ashton Baptist Church. He was a 50-year member of Minturn Lodge 19 A.F. & A.M. at Point Pleasant, W.Va., whose members conducted Masonic graveside rites. He is survived by wife, Dorothy Wheaton Ball; one daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary and John Vickers of Apple Grove, W.Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Vikki Ball of Ashton, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Valerie Ball, Michelle Lambert and Daniel Ball; three great-grandchildren, Rachel Lambert, Madalyn Lambert and Tyler Ball. Marilyn J. Ham, 69, of Milton, wife of Wayland R. “Bill” Ham II, died Sunday, August 12, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital. She was a homemaker. Also surviving are one son, Wayland R. Ham III, and one daughter, Laura Jane Slone, both of Milton. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 14, 2001 at Milton Funeral Home; burial in Forest Memorial Park.
George Delmus King
George Delmus King, 64, of Largo, Fla., formerly of Lesage, W.Va., passed away at his residence on August 6, 2001. He was born May 1, 1937, at Cowen, W.Va., a son of Esta King and George Carter King. Survivors include a son Jeffrey King of Keysville, Va.; a sister, Bernice Palmer of Huntington, W.Va.; two brothers, Paul King of Lesage, W.Va., and Clifford King of Largo, Fla.; one great-niece, Laren Brown of Lutz, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Clarence King and two nephews, Allen Brown and Steve Brown. He will be missed by family and friends. Seth Benjamin Post
Seth Benjamin Post, 20, of Myrtle Beach, S.C, formerly of Huntington, died Friday, August 10, 2001 in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was a student at Harvard University’s summer architecture program, Cshey Summer School of Music and University of Philadelphia, and worked as a server for House of Blues Restaurant, North Myrtle Beach. Survivors include his mother, Connie Burke Post of Myrtle Beach; his father and stepmother, Donald Hite Post Jr. and Barbara Brooks Post of Elkton, Md.; one brother, Nathan Andrew Post of Myrtle Beach; two stepsisters, Jacqueline Duvall of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Catherine Duvall of Huntington; and one stepbrother, David “Bo” Duvall of Huntington. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at First Presbyterian Church of Huntington; burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Marvin Shelton Price, 50, of Ona, W.Va., entered life August 10, 2001. He was president of Price Music Company and owner of the Omelet Stoppe. He was born January 28, 1951 in Huntington. He was preceded in death by his father, Shelton Price, and his mother, Eunice Hillman Adkins. He is survived by his wife, Tess Price, and their children, Madison and Celia Price of Ona; one daughter, Jami Price of Ona, and one son, Jason Price of Jacksonville, Fla., and their mother, Debbie Price of Ona; two stepsons, Don Pennington and Cory Pennington, both of Huntington; step-mother, Phyllis Price of Ona; step-brother, Gary Hale of Salt Rock; a special cousin, Ronnie Ferrell; and a very loving grandmother, Ardath Price of Ona. Wallace Funeral Home & Chaple, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Graveside services was conducted Sunday, August 12, 2001, at Blue Sulphur Cemetery, Ona, by Pastor Brent Gibson.
Lois Joan Short
Lois Joan Short, 68, of Lesage, wife of James L Short, passed away Friday, August 10, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Graveside funeral service were conducted Monday, August 13, 2001, at Greenbottom Memorial Park with Rev. Doug Spurlock officiating. She was born April 27, 1933, in Huntington a daughter of the late Clyde C. and Cecil Ash Crawford. She was a member of Greenbottom Baptist Church and the Ladies Quilting Soceity. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Allen Lee Short; and three brothers, Rex, Tony and Roger Crawford. Additional survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Danny Cobb of Glenwood; a son Ricky Short of Glenwood; three sisters, Gwendolyn Sue Knight of Columbus, Ohio, Grethel Jean Clark of Milton and Shelia Faye Varney of Huntington; two brothers, Carlos Crawford of Huntington and Jerry Crawford of Lesage; six grandchildren, Tina Marie Short of Huntington, Jamey Lee and spouse Amy Short of Glenwood, Candie Rena and spouse Jerry Clatworthy of Huntington Joseph and spouse Tiffany Short of Lesage, Erin Short of Glenwood, Scottie Lee Cobb of Glenwood; three great-grandchildren, Megan Short, Miranda Cobb and Evan Cobb; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Short of Barboursville; special friends, Nancy Swann and Mary Watkins, both of Lesage; a special cousin, Sue Christian of Huntington; and a host of family and friends. Mary Ellen Bayes Surgeon
Mary Ellen Bayes Surgeon, 69, of Barboursville, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 9, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 12, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Leo Skaggs and the Rev. George Surgeon. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born September 2, 1931, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late William Thomas and Huldia Elizabeth Lemaster Bayes. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Thomas Bayes Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband George Barrett Surgeon, who was and still is the highlight of her life, and currently resides at Scenic Hills Nursing Home in Bidwell, Ohio; five daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Herbert D. Seay Jr. of Barboursville, Patricia Ann and George D. Poole of Williamson, W.Va., Pamela Pauline Pennisten of Barboursville, Camilla Jean and Kermit Bailey and Alice Lucille and Archie Perry, all of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry Joe and Kathy Collins of Huntington; 13 grandchildren, Charlie, Jayson and Jennifer Seay, Scott and Christina Poole, Donnie and Michael Pennisten, Brian, Billy and Mary Perry, Lisa Smith and her husband George, and Lori and Joey Collins; one great-grandchild, Brennan; one sister, Mae Braham of Huntington; a special dear sister-in-law, Ida May Bayes, and a host of nieces and nephews. Mary was involved in numerous activities in her short life. She was first of all a housewife. She cared for two aunts for several years during their illness while talking care of her family. She worked at Peoples Company as a bundler and inspector of Army tents. She was an Avon representative for 24 years, working her way up the ladder to Team Leader, President’s Club and Honor Society.
In addition to her work, she was an avid bowler for over 20 years at Colonial Lanes. She was a member of Barboursville Senior Citizens and a lifelong member of the First Guyandotte Baptist Church, where she received a five-year Sunday School pin as a young child, of which she was very proud. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Mary was a wonderful mother to all her children and a great friend to many. She is an angel in heaven and watching over us. She touched so many lives.
