Elsie H. Smith, 78, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Sunday, September 9, 2001, in Las Vegas. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 20, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Dr. Ed Grant and the Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born January 10, 1923, in North Matewan a daughter of the late Lewis Richard and Margaret Springer Hendricks. She was a retired employee of the Barboursville State Hospital and was a volunteer for many years with the American Red Cross. She was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Smith. She is survived by one daughter, Sheryl Sue Smith Redpath of Irvine, Calif.; two sons, Richard Paul Smith of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Gregory Eli Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Janice Whitt of Barboursville, Betty Akers of North Matewan, W.Va., and Helen Montgomery of Palmersville, Tenn.; one brother, Lewis Reed Hendricks of Dayton, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Keith Redpath, David Redpath, Paul Kotcha/Smith and Dale Kotcha/Smith. Nephews were pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Pauline H. Perry
Pauline H. Perry, 85, of Lesage, W.Va., passed away Sunday, September 16, 2001, at Kovacker House, Hospice of Riverside in Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 20, 2001, at Beard Mortuary, Huntington, W.Va. She was born April 15, 1916, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of the late Claude C. and Gracie Spencer Hensley. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Huntington. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland C. Perry, and four brothers, Cecil Hensley, Murrell Hensley, Claude C. Hensley and Ronald Hensley. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ronda and Tim Budd of Howard, Ohio, and Jill and Gregory W. Mitchell of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Brittany Nicole Marshall of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Kristin Nicole Budd of Hilliard, Ohio; two sisters, Dortha Mae Niswander of Lesage, W.Va., and Alma Lee Niswander of Princeton, W.Va. Martha May Armstrong
Martha May Armstrong, 69, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 17, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 20, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, by Pastor Cledith “Bub” Campbell. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, WV. She was born July 28, 1932, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clyde Bryant and Mary Virginia McCallister Prince. She was a member of the Nazarene Church in Clarksburg, W.Va. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Armstrong; one daughter, Linda Diane Williams; one grandson, David Charles Smith; and one sister, Shirley Ann Bryant. She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Cart of Barboursville, with whom she made her home, Martha Louise Williams and Diana Lynn Williams; one son, Charles K. Smith of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Gillis F. Bryant of Hurricane; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Wanda Lou Legg
Wanda Lou Legg, 57, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 21, 2001, at her residence. She was a retired assistant accountant with the West Virginia Department of Highways, member and past president of the Milton Women’s Club and a Girl Scout troop leader. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Imogene Powell McComas. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Garland. Graveside services were held Sunday September 23, 2001, at Milton Cemetery with the Rev. James Bolen officiating. She is survived by her loving husband, Robert “Bob” Legg of Milton; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark Allen and Nicole Legg of Branchland; a daughter and son-in-law Sherrill Lynn and Larry Saunders of Huntington; two grandchildren, Amber and Jon Thomas Saunders of Huntington; three sisters, Linda Carter of Milton, Nancy Cargill of Sarasota, Fla., and Karen Rose of Hurricane; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and David Casto of Milton. Donations may be made to Milton Free Methodist Church. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Schuyler W. Rowsey
Schuyler W. Rowsey, 69, of Milton died Sunday, September 22, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Services were held Monday, September 24, 2001, at Milton Funeral Home by Rev. Charles Gibson, with interment following at Mt. Olive Cemetery. He was born February 14, 1932, in Mason County, the son of the late Wilmer O. and Georgia M. Reynolds Rowsey. He was retired from Kerr Glass Co., was a member of Milton Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites and Milton Lion’s Club, and he sang bass with The Rowsey Family. A very well-known fast pitch softball player and coach, he was an active member of Milton Little League complex. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Otis, Rex and Jim Rowsey. He is survived by his wife, Retha Hayes Rowsey of Milton; two daughters, Claudia “Tinker” Rowsey Clagg and husband Roger of Milton and Robin L. Rowsey Bird and husband Johnnie of Milton; one brother, Carlton Rowsey of Milton; three grandchildren, Chad Clagg and wife Leslie, Tiffani Rowsey and Colby Clagg, all of Milton; one great-grandchild, Skyler Clagg of Milton; three stepgrandchildren, Regina, Sherry and Wendy; and three great-stepgrandchildren, Mickey, Celestia and Sierra.

Molendia Davis
Molendia Davis, 81, of Milton, died Thursday, September 20, 2001 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Survivors include her son, Ronnie Davis of Milton; and three sisters, Maylener Davis, Anna Bell Woody and Isabelle Reynolds. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 22nd, at Milton Funeral Home; burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Ernest S. Romine
Ernest S. “Ernie” Romine, 43, of Scott Depot died September 10, 2001.
Service was held September 14, 2001, at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg. Burial was in the Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery, Lost Creek.

Garnet M. Bailey
Garnet M. Bailey, 77, of Scott Depot died September 19, 2001, at her home following a brief illness.
She was a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women of the Church and was involved in many community activities. In addition to being a homemaker, she was also a retired self-employed restaurateur and a 39 year resident of Scott Depot.
Surviving: sons, Thomas R. Bailey Jr. of Missoula, Montana and Bernard L. Bailey of Hurricane; daughters, Joyce McCormick Arthur of Scott Depot, Ramona S. Dickson of Hurricane, Delinda J. Johnson of Clendenin, Letha A. Bohanan of Knoxville, Tennessee, and D. Denise Bailey of Versailles, Kentucky; sisters, Drema Nickols and Joyce Nottingham, both of Brunswick, Ohio, Norma Dean and Janet Ingram of South Charleston; brothers, Edgar Carver of Naples, Florida and Clyde Baldwin of Etiwanda, California; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, September 22, 2001, at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church with Dr. J.D. Harrah, Rev. George Bendall and Rev. Kevin Channell officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

William F. McGrew Sr.
William F. “Fred” McGrew Sr., 74, of Red House died September 21, 2001.
He was a Baptist and a graduate of Louisville Electronic School, who retired from Union Carbide with 40 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Meeks McGrew, and one granddaughter.
Surviving: daughter, Connie and husband, Denny, of St. Albans; sons, Fred Jr. and wife, Donna, of Dunbar; Greg and wife, Linda, of Melbourne, Florida, and Bruce, and wife, Robin, of Red House; sisters, Gloria Thomas of Nitro and Norma Lee Tucker of Hannan; six grandchildren; one step-grandchild; two great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild.
Service was held Sunday, September 23, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Haven of Res Mausoleum, Red House.

Gladys Rae Cobb
Gladys Rae Cobb, 74, of Hometown died September 20, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, retired from the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center with 17 years of service, and attended Elizabeth Baptist Church, Bancroft.
Surviving: children, James R. Cobb of Glasgow, Sharon K,. Harmon of Fairplain, Oatis B. Cobb Jr. of Cross Creek, Debbie K. Witt of Red House, and Dottie A. Witt of Cross Lanes; brother, Bob Coon of Fairmont; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, September 23, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Bill Coon officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Georgia Henson
Georgia Carney Henson, 81, of Scott Depot died September 9, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after suffering a stroke.
She was born October 15, 1919, on Haines Branch, Sissonville, the daughter of the late Joe and Eva Monday Carney. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Oswald Hill.
As a child she moved with her family to Dunbar, where she lived most of her life prior to moving to Putnam County in 1985.
She was a Christian and a member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene. She was also a charter member of Dunbar Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving: husband, Lenny L. Henson; son and daughter-in-law, Michial and Shirley Hill of Scott Depot; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bill Lowe of Nashville, Tennessee; stepdaughter, Dr. Lois Henson of Dayton, Ohio; granddaughter and her husband, Susan and John Bennett of Hurricane; grandson and his wife, Jerry and Joy Hill of Scott Depot; grandson, Daniel Leverett of Nashville; granddaughter, Heather Leverett of Nashville; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Harriett Trussell of San Rafael, California; many nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Charles V. Williams officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Dunbar. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Elmer E. Knell
Elmer Eugene Knell, 79, of Poca died September 9, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan J. Knell.
He was a member of Red House United Brethren Independent Church, a lifelong resident of Poca and was retired from Monsanto Company, Nitro, with 37 years’ service. He was a former member of the Putnam County Board of Education, having served for 12 years, a 32nd Degree Mason in Kanawha Valley Masonic Lodge 36, Buffalo, and a member of Buffalo Eastern Star Chapter 150. He had served his country in the Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster and a Bronze Star.
Surviving: wife, Betty Cowan Knell; daughter, Diane Lazear of Vienna; sons, Paul Knell of Teays Valley and Bruce Knell of Poca; sister, Francis Quinn of Nitro; brother, Forrest Knell of Nitro; grandchildren, Stacey C. Dean, Ashley L. Bailey, Bradley P. Knell, Amy L. Knell, Anthony B. Knell, Daniel Lazear, and Bethany D. Lazear.
Service was held Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at Red House United Brethren Independent Church with Pastor Joe Hutchinson and Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Hada Alma Davis
Hada Alma Davis, 90, of Fraziers Bottom died September 10, 2001, at home.
She was a member of the 5 & 20 United Baptist Church, a housewife and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Judy A. and Vernon Foster of Fraziers Bottom; sister, Florence Hinkle of Hurricane; grandson, Gary Davis of Hurricane; three additional grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, September 13, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Boyd Purcell officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom.

Ruth E. Jeffers
Ruth E. Jeffers, 85, of Eleanor died September 11, 2001, at home following a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a member of Red House United Brethren Independent Church.
Surviving: husband, Chester Jeffers; sons, Arthur Eugene Jeffers of Gallipolis, Ohio and Charles Franklin Jeffers of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Arlene Nester of St. Albans; brothers, Ernest Lyons of Eleanor and Harvey Lyons of St. Albans; sisters, Pearl Cox of Red House, Sylvia Covert of Midway, Helen Browning and Dorothy Riddle, both of Eleanor; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, September 14, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Larry Covert officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Jessey B. Henson
Jessey Bernard Henson, 78, of Hurricane died September 11, 2001, following a bravely fought, lengthy illness.
Bernard was born July 10, 1923, the son of the late Alexander and Dora Searles Henson. He served in the United States Air Force, European Theater, having piloted 35 missions in World War II and was retired from C&P Telephone as a field engineer with 40 years of service. He loved children and spent years of service through the Little League Babe Ruth Baseball organization.
He was an active member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene where he was a member of the Friends Forever Sunday School Class, the Senior Adult Ministries and was a representative of the church to the Community Food Panty in Hurricane. He also taught adult Sunday school classes for 51 years in the Church of the Nazarene. He loved to sing praises to his Lord and used his talent in leading choirs and singing in various groups for over 55 years.
Surviving: wife of 55 years, Betty Hayes Henson; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Thompson of Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Tim and Debbie Henson of Parkersburg; grandchildren, Chad Henson, Shawn and Jennifer Knight, all of Parkersburg, Robbie and Jordan Thompson of Hurricane; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Brayden Knight of Parkersburg; brothers, Clyde, Lenny and Ansel Henson, all of Hurricane; sister, Iva Mae Parsons of Culloden.
Service was held Friday, September 14, 2001, at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Charles V. Williams, Rev. Sidney Warner and Rev. Tim Henson officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Susan Bostic
Susan Ferrara Bostic, 57, of Poca died September 13, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division after a two-year illness.
She was a member of Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane. She retired from The State Journal and was a former regional sales manager for WOWK-TV for nine years. She was an 11-year resident of Poca.
Surviving: husband, Dean Bostic; daughters, Kelly Pifer of Scott Depot; sons, John Ferrara of Charleston and Todd Ferrara of Culloden; sisters, Patty Tooley of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Georgia Kratzer of Altoona, Pennsylvania, and Nancy Daus of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania; brother, Tom Mathews of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, September 15, 2001, at Catholic Church of the Ascension with the Rev. Father Neil Buchlein as celebrant. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Yancie W. Fletcher
Yancie Wilford Fletcher, 91, of Hurricane died September 13, 2001, at Personal Care Home, St. Albans, of a short illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston plant, with 34 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant View Chruch of God, Hurricane, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie E. Rogers Fletcher.
Surviving: daughter, Ruby Coalter of Nitro; sons, Wilford L. Fletcher of Hurricane and James C. Fletcher of Scott Depot; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, September 17, 2001, at Pleasant View Chruch of God with the Rev. Walter Allen officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Betty A. Newman
Betty Ann Trador Newman, 63, of Buffalo died September 13, 2001, at home following a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a graduate of Buffalo High School and a lifelong member of Buffalo Baptist Church.
Surviving: husband, David E. Newman Sr.; daughters, Julia Thornton of Eleanor, Joyce Comer of Teays Valley, Alice Jones of Winfield, and Millie McMillon of Alum Creeek; sons, David Newman Jr. of Chesapeake, Ohio, Jerry Newman of Dale City, Oklahoma, Donald Newman of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, James Newman of Union Gap, Washington, and Matthew Newman of Buffalo; sisters, Maxine Harman and Bethaline Jividen, both of Buffalo; brothers, Thomas Trador Jr. of Robertsburg; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, September 16, 2001, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Tim Day officiating. Burial was in Cross Creek Cemetery, Buffalo.

Artie Mae Nesvik
Artie Mae Thaxton Nesvik, 85, of Hurricane died September 14, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
Surviving: daughter, Lena Qualls of Hurricane; son, Floyd Furget of Detroit, Michigan; sisters, Betty Adkins and Geraldine Barrett, both of Hamlin, and Rosalee Fresh of Fairmont; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, September 17, 2001, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Paul Baldwin officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Lisa Ann Blake
Lisa Ann Blake, 29, of Huntington, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Delores White; burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born April 28, 1972 in Cabell County. She is survived by her husband, Herbie Lee Blake; one daughter, Melanie Keesee; one son, Herbie Lee Blake Jr.; mother and stepfather, Daisy Ruth and Charlie Nichols; maternal grandparents, Rev. Robert and Mary Eakle of Huntington; and several aunts, uncles, family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Helen L. Erwin
Helen L Erwin, 79, of Huntington, passed away on September 13, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, September 17, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, by Rev. Rick Brown. Burial in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, in Teays Valley. She was born on June 13, 1922, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Otho D. and Hazel Handley Erwin. She was a retired employee of Bell Atlantic. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard C. Erwin and Robert L. Erwin. She is survived by one sister, Virginia Bandy of Georgia; two brothers, Merrill Erwin of Barboursville and Jerrell Erwin of Huntington. Pallbearers were Jeffrey Erwin, Mark Erwin, Michael Erwin, Robert L. Erwin Jr., David Ramey, Doug Ramey, Dwayne Cole, Billy Powell and Ryan Hanna.

Mach H. Adkins
Mach H. Adkins, 74, of London, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, September 15, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, W.Va., by the Rev. Ray Adkins and the Rev. Heron Adkins. Burial in Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. He was born on January 16, 1927, in Wayne County, a son of the late Joseph and Oriole Stephenson Adkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He is survived by wife Alice Adkins; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Gail Tolle of Peebles, Ohio; three sons and daughter-in-law, Ernest and Sharon Adkins of Lafayette, Ohio, Joseph and Trina Adkins and Darius and Mary Adkins. both of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

William E. Hicks Jr.
William E. Hicks Jr., 56, of New London, Conn., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., died at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. Memorial service was conducted Saturday, September 15, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Ed Grant. Private burial service will be held at a later date. He was born June 26, 1945, in Huntington, a son of Betty Jo Hart and the late William Earl Hicks Sr. He was a 1963 graduate of Barboursville High School. He graduated from Mahegan Community College and was currently attending Three Rivers Community College. Mr. Hicks was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and was employed as an engineering department plant operator at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Connecticut. An avid golfer, he was a past member of the Shennccosset Golf Club and the Three Rivers Community College golf team. He was also active helping others in Alcoholics Anonymous. He is survived by his mother, Betty Jo Hart of Crystal River, Fla.; three daughters, Victoria Creamer of Lebanon, Conn., Tracy Lawrence of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Kirsten Sarra of South Windsor, Conn.; a brother, Brent Adams of Barboursville; a sister, Bettina Perry of Barboursville; and four grandchildren.

Selma D. Hultin
Selma D. Hultin, 97, of Milton died Tuesday, September 11, 2001 in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane. Survivors include one son Jim Hultin of Milton; and two grandchildren Britta Moss and Kimberly Hultin, both of Columbus, Ohio. Services were held Saturday, September 15, 2001 at Milton Funeral Home.

Thelma Naomi Cooper
Thelma Naomi Cooper, 81, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord, and her husband Erva W., on Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Ora Jack and Maude Hensley. Her husband, Erva W. Cooper, also preceded her in death. She was a member and pianist for Chestnut Grove Baptist Church for 42 years, a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Milton and former organist for Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 15, 2001, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Milton, with the Rev. Kelson Bays officiating. Burial in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. She is survived by one son, Michael W. and his wife Katrina S. Cooper of Ashton; one granddaughter, Jessie Bell Cooper of Ashton; one special friend, Lynden Massie of Milton; two sisters, Mary Reed and Ruth Rose, both of Huntington; one brother, Jack Hensley of Florida; and three angels who took care of her, Louise Clagg and Jo Singer, both of Milton, and Elsie Linville of Barboursville. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Becky Scarberry
Becky Scarberry, 73, of Huntington, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at her residence. A graveside service was held September 15, 2001, at the Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance, Huntington. Elder Willard Carrico and Bishop Kim Wolfe conducted the service. She was born June 19, 1928, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Nannie B, Carrico and James A. Wells. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel York and Mary Etta Triplett; and three brothers, Benny, Bob and John Wells. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Scarberry is survived by her husband of 47 years, Hartley L. Scarberry; three daughters, Sherry E. Roberts of Huntington, Karen L. Smith of Barboursville and Sharon Morris and her husband Michael of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Sherman and Sandy Adkins of Huntington; one sister, Nellie Rogers of Huntington and one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Geneva Wells of Barboursville; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Hospice of Huntington, 1101 6th Ave., Huntington, WV 25702. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.beardfuneralhome.com. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
