Elsie H. Smith, 78, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Sunday, September 9, 2001, in Las Vegas. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 20, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Dr. Ed Grant and the Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born January 10, 1923, in North Matewan a daughter of the late Lewis Richard and Margaret Springer Hendricks. She was a retired employee of the Barboursville State Hospital and was a volunteer for many years with the American Red Cross. She was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Smith. She is survived by one daughter, Sheryl Sue Smith Redpath of Irvine, Calif.; two sons, Richard Paul Smith of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Gregory Eli Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters, Janice Whitt of Barboursville, Betty Akers of North Matewan, W.Va., and Helen Montgomery of Palmersville, Tenn.; one brother, Lewis Reed Hendricks of Dayton, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Keith Redpath, David Redpath, Paul Kotcha/Smith and Dale Kotcha/Smith. Nephews were pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Pauline H. Perry, 85, of Lesage, W.Va., passed away Sunday, September 16, 2001, at Kovacker House, Hospice of Riverside in Columbus, Ohio. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 20, 2001, at Beard Mortuary, Huntington, W.Va. She was born April 15, 1916, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of the late Claude C. and Gracie Spencer Hensley. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Wesleyan Church of Huntington. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland C. Perry, and four brothers, Cecil Hensley, Murrell Hensley, Claude C. Hensley and Ronald Hensley. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ronda and Tim Budd of Howard, Ohio, and Jill and Gregory W. Mitchell of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Brittany Nicole Marshall of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Kristin Nicole Budd of Hilliard, Ohio; two sisters, Dortha Mae Niswander of Lesage, W.Va., and Alma Lee Niswander of Princeton, W.Va. Martha May Armstrong, 69, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 17, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 20, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, by Pastor Cledith “Bub” Campbell. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, WV. She was born July 28, 1932, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clyde Bryant and Mary Virginia McCallister Prince. She was a member of the Nazarene Church in Clarksburg, W.Va. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Armstrong; one daughter, Linda Diane Williams; one grandson, David Charles Smith; and one sister, Shirley Ann Bryant. She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Cart of Barboursville, with whom she made her home, Martha Louise Williams and Diana Lynn Williams; one son, Charles K. Smith of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Gillis F. Bryant of Hurricane; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Wanda Lou Legg
Wanda Lou Legg, 57, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 21, 2001, at her residence. She was a retired assistant accountant with the West Virginia Department of Highways, member and past president of the Milton Women’s Club and a Girl Scout troop leader. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Imogene Powell McComas. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Sarah Garland. Graveside services were held Sunday September 23, 2001, at Milton Cemetery with the Rev. James Bolen officiating. She is survived by her loving husband, Robert “Bob” Legg of Milton; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark Allen and Nicole Legg of Branchland; a daughter and son-in-law Sherrill Lynn and Larry Saunders of Huntington; two grandchildren, Amber and Jon Thomas Saunders of Huntington; three sisters, Linda Carter of Milton, Nancy Cargill of Sarasota, Fla., and Karen Rose of Hurricane; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and David Casto of Milton. Schuyler W. Rowsey, 69, of Milton died Sunday, September 22, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Services were held Monday, September 24, 2001, at Milton Funeral Home by Rev. Charles Gibson, with interment
following at Mt. Olive Cemetery. He was born February 14, 1932, in Mason County, the son of the late Wilmer O. and Georgia M. Reynolds Rowsey. He was retired from Kerr Glass Co., was a member of Milton Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites and Milton Lion’s Club, and he sang bass with The Rowsey Family. A very well-known fast pitch softball player and coach, he was an active member of Milton Little League complex. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Otis, Rex and Jim Rowsey. He is survived by his wife, Retha Hayes Rowsey of Milton; two daughters, Claudia “Tinker” Rowsey Clagg and husband Roger of Milton and Robin L. Rowsey Bird and husband Johnnie of Milton; one brother, Carlton Rowsey of Milton; three grandchildren, Chad Clagg and wife Leslie, Tiffani Rowsey and Colby Clagg, all of Milton; one great-grandchild, Skyler Clagg of Milton; three stepgrandchildren, Regina, Sherry and Wendy; and three great-stepgrandchildren, Mickey, Celestia and Sierra.

Garnet M. Bailey, 77, of Scott Depot died September 19, 2001, at her home following a brief illness.
She was a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Women of the Church and was involved in many community activities. In addition to being a homemaker, she was also a retired self-employed restaurateur and a 39 year resident of Scott Depot.

William F. “Fred” McGrew Sr., 74, of Red House died September 21, 2001.
He was a Baptist and a graduate of Louisville Electronic School, who retired from Union Carbide with 40 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Meeks McGrew, and one granddaughter.

Gladys Rae Cobb, 74, of Hometown died September 20, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, retired from the West Virginia Rehabilitation Center with 17 years of service, and attended Elizabeth Baptist Church, Bancroft.

Georgia Henson
Georgia Carney Henson, 81, of Scott Depot died September 9, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after suffering a stroke.
She was born October 15, 1919, on Haines Branch, Sissonville, the daughter of the late Joe and Eva Monday Carney. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Oswald Hill.
As a child she moved with her family to Dunbar, where she lived most of her life prior to moving to Putnam County in 1985.
She was a Christian and a member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene. She was also a charter member of Dunbar Church of the Nazarene.

Henson; son and daughter-in-law, Michial and Shirley Hill of Scott Depot; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bill Lowe of Nashville, Tennessee; stepdaughter, Dr. Lois Henson of Dayton, Ohio; granddaughter and her husband, Susan and John Bennett of Hurricane; grandson and his wife, Jerry and Joy Hill of Scott Depot; grandson, Daniel Leverett of Nashville; granddaughter, Heather Leverett of Nashville; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; sister, Harriett Trussell of San Rafael, California; many nieces and nephews.

Elmer E. Knell
Elmer Eugene Knell, 79, of Poca died September 9, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Ivan J. Knell.
He was a member of Red House United Brethren Independent Church, a lifelong resident of Poca and was retired from Monsanto Company, Nitro, with 37 years’ service. He was a former member of the Putnam County Board of Education, having served for 12 years, a 32nd Degree Mason in Kanawha Valley Masonic Lodge 36, Buffalo, and a member of Buffalo Eastern Star Chapter 150. He had served his country in the Army during World War II and received a Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster and a Bronze Star.

Jessey B. Henson
Jessey Bernard Henson, 78, of Hurricane died September 11, 2001, following a bravely fought, lengthy illness.
Bernard was born July 10, 1923, the son of the late Alexander and Dora Searles Henson. He served in the United States Air Force, European Theater, having piloted 35 missions in World War II and was retired from C&P Telephone as a field engineer with 40 years of service. He loved children and spent years of service through the Little League Babe Ruth Baseball organization.
He was an active member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene where he was a member of the Friends Forever Sunday School Class, the Senior Adult Ministries and was a representative of the church to the Community Food Panty in Hurricane. He also taught adult Sunday school classes for 51 years in the Church of the Nazarene. He loved to sing praises to his Lord and used his talent in leading choirs and singing in various groups for over 55 years.
Surviving: wife of 55 years, Betty Hayes Henson; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Thompson of Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Susan Ferrara Bostic, 57, of Poca died September 13, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division after a two-year illness.
She was a member of Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane. She retired from The State Journal and was a former regional sales manager for WOWK-TV for nine years. She was an 11-year resident of Poca.

He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston plant, with 34 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant View Chruch of God, Hurricane, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie E. Rogers Fletcher.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. William E. Hicks Jr.
William E. Hicks Jr., 56, of New London, Conn., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., died at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London. Memorial service was conducted Saturday, September 15, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Ed Grant. Private burial service will be held at a later date. He was born June 26, 1945, in Huntington, a son of Betty Jo Hart and the late William Earl Hicks Sr. He was a 1963 graduate of Barboursville High School. He graduated from Mahegan Community College and was currently attending Three Rivers Community College. Mr. Hicks was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and was employed as an engineering department plant operator at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Connecticut. An avid golfer, he was a past member of the Shennccosset Golf Club and the Three Rivers Community College golf team. He was also active helping others in Alcoholics Anonymous. He is survived by his mother, Betty Jo Hart of Crystal River, Fla.; three daughters, Victoria Creamer of Lebanon, Conn., Tracy Lawrence of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Kirsten Sarra of South Windsor, Conn.; a brother, Brent Adams of Barboursville; a sister, Bettina Perry of Barboursville; and four grandchildren.

Thelma Naomi Cooper, 81, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord, and her husband Erva W., on Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Ora Jack and Maude Hensley. Her husband, Erva W. Cooper, also preceded her in death. She was a member and pianist for Chestnut Grove Baptist Church for 42 years, a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Milton and former organist for Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Becky Scarberry, 73, of Huntington, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2001, at her residence. A graveside service was held September 15, 2001, at the Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance, Huntington. Elder Willard Carrico and Bishop Kim Wolfe conducted the service. She was born June 19, 1928, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Nannie B, Carrico and James A. Wells. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel York and Mary Etta Triplett; and three brothers, Benny, Bob and John Wells. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. Scarberry is survived by her husband of 47 years, Hartley L. Scarberry; three daughters, Sherry E. Roberts of Huntington, Karen L.
