Nina May Reed Robertson
Nina May Reed Robertson, 95, of Teays Valley, formerly of Alhambra, Calif., died Oct. 9, 2001, at Teays Valley Center after a long illness.
She was born July 3, 1906, at Procious, the daughter of the late Levi James and Adora Vera Steorts Reed. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Frank A. Robertson, on Nov. 12, 1993, and sister, Helen Reed Goad.
Surviving: son, F. Douglas Robertson and wife, Wanda, of Teays Valley.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin, with the Rev. J.D. Harrah officiating. Burial in Robertson Cemetery, Clendenin.
Ivan C. Williams
Ivan C. Williams, 73, of Poca died Oct. 8, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
Mr. Williams was a 14 year resident of Poca, and a retired lineman for the IBEW Local 196, St. Charles, Ill. He was a member of Friendship Lodge AF&AM, Dixon, Ill., and Eastern Star, Dixon, Ill. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, an avid fisherman and a Christian.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Duffield Williams; his mother, Martha Williams of Culloden; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Joel Gorzny of Polo, Ill.; several nieces and nephews; two grandchildren.
Services were held Thursday, Oct. 11, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Art Hage and the Rev. James Thomas officiating. Burial with Masonic rites in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca was in charge of arrangements. Helen Simmons Barker
Helen Simmons Barker, 85, of Huntington died Saturday, October 13, 2001 in Mariner Health Care. Graveside services were conducted at 2 pm Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, by Rev. Dwight Barker. Helen was born June 18,1916, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Winfield “Chink’ and Veatrice Simmons. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jabo Barker; three sisters, Dorothy Holly, Mabel Swarm and Mary E Bias; and one brother, Willard Simmons. Mrs Barker was a member of Trinity Church of God, where she helped in the nursery. She is survived by nephews and nieces, David, Larry, Ronald, Dallas and Stephen Bias, Richard, Dicky, Sally and Dottie Swann and Johnny, Mike, Damon and Janet Holly. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
Velva J. Grant
Velva J. Grant, 91, of Ironton, Ohio, died October 11. 2001 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital after a brief illness. Formerly of Hurricane, WVa., and South Point, Ohio, she was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. Preceded in death by husband, Clay Grant; one son, Clay Jr.; two daughters, Joyce Chaney and Gladys Mae; and six brothers and sisters. Walter Quentin Perry
Walter Quentin Perry, 82, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Friday, October 12, 2001, in Morris Memorial Nursing Home, Milton W.Va. Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 pm Sunday, October 14,2001 at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with the Rev. James L Dailey officiating. Burial in Wayne Community Gardens, Wayne, W.Va. He was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Cabell County, W.Va, a son of the late Walter Martin and Cloie Ann Dailey Perry. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Bocook Perry; his second wife, Mary Perry, two sisters, Norma Petrie and Geneva Perry; and a brother, William “Billy” Perry. He was retired from the former Connor’s Steel, worked in the CCC Camps and was a member of the Echo Church. Survivors include a sister, Pauline Webb of Huntington; two brothers, Boyd L. Perry of Ona, WV, and Clifford E. Perry of Milton, WV; two step-daughters, Sharon Rooney of Barboursville and Patty Ferguson of Columbus, Ohio; a stepson, Richard Dale Maynard of Wayne, WV; five stepgrandchildren, six stepgreat-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Vincent E. Perry of Proctorville, Ohio. Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.
Herbert Don Seay Sr.
Herbert Don Seay Sr., 83, of Williamsburg, W.Va., passed away Friday, October 12, 2001, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, after an extended illness. Mr. Seay was born August 4, 1918, in Trout Valley, W.Va, to the late Charles Wallace and Lucy Williams Seay. He was a WWII veteran, having served in North Africa and in Italy, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He retired from Marshall University’s Roads and Grounds Department in 1980 and moved to Williamsburg. He was also a Greenbrier County school bus driver for many years. After his retirement from that, he was a full-time farmer. Mr. Seay was an active member of the Williamsburg Ruritan Chapter and at the beginning of his retirement he was a member of the Rescue Squad. He enjoyed visiting with the community club members. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, and he always had a story to share with his friends. He was a good and honest man and a great father. His wife, children and grandchildren will miss him. A long list of special friends from the area and the community, who with their help and kindness made it possible for dad to remain home with his illness until last week - your generosity and friendship can never be repaid. We thank each of you. You will never be forgotten. Mr. Seay was also preceded in death by two brothers, Emerson and Olin Seay; one sister, Arretta; and an infant son, Charles Franklin Seay. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Gladys Lewis Seay; one daughter, Carol Ann and husband Ronald Skaggs of Barboursville, W.Va.; one son, Herbert D. Seay Jr. and wife Paula of Barboursville; one foster son, Rosco Linthicum and wife Brenda of Barboursville;

Lois Marie Davidson Shull
Lois Marie Davidson Shull, 85, of Milton died October 13, 2001, in Saint Mary’s Hospital after a brief illness. She was born February 27, 1916 in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Orva Clifford and Ruby Nash Davidson. Funeral Services were conducted Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home with Dr. T.J. DuBose officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Park, Barboursville. She was a retired first grade teacher from Cabell County having served over 25 years at Milton Elementary School and member of Milton Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James William and Brother S.A. Davidson. She is survived by a daughter, Donna (Jeffrey) Thornton of Milton; one sister, Dorcas Sanford of Barboursville; one brother, O.C. Davidson, Jr. of Milton; two grandsons, Todd Thornton of Charleston, Eric Thornton of Milton; one granddaughter, Lara Thornton of Orlando, Fl.
James W. Tennant
James W. Tennant, 81, of Barboursville, died Thursday, October 11, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, October 14, 2001 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Monty Brown. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born April 2, 1920, in Metz, WV, a son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Alice Evelyn Rice Tennant. He was also preceded in death by his wife Nellie Rave Park Tennant; two brothers, Lester Tennant and Herb Tennant, and one sister, Fern Heldreth. He was a retired school teacher with the Cabell County Board of Education and was a volunteer of the St. Mary’s Auxiliary with over 10,000 hours of service since 1992. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and five Bronze Battle Stars. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Malinda Tennant of Barboursville and Joyce and Dr. Rachael Skeens of Ona; one sister, Martha Fetty of Reedsville, W.Va., and four grandchildren.
Sylvia Marie Marcum
Sylvia Marie Marcum, 86, of Nitro passed from this life on Oct. 10, 2001, following a short illness.
Born Nov. 16, 1914, she was the only child of Lola Tittle and Charles Poff. She was a graduate of Poca High School, class of 1993. She graduated from Marshall Academy, now Marshall University, earning a certification as a teacher. She then taught students at a one room school in Red House, WV.
She left that position to marry Jasper K. Phillips, who preceded her in death. Together they had two daughters, Dolores Wyckoff of St. Albans and Jacqueline Mallett of Nitro. She was a longtime resident of Nitro and a member of the First Baptist Church of Nitro. Throughout her life she was a constant source of joy, encouragement and unconditional love for her family and close friends. These were her most enduring lessons.
She is also preceded in death by her second husband, Herbert Marcum.
In addition to her daughters, she is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Sara, B.J. and Jessica.
Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of Nitro with the Rev. Lawrence Hoptry officiating. Burial in New Antioch Cemetery in Red House, W.Va.
Cooke Funeral Home in Nitro was in charge of the arrangements.
Inez C. Messinger Smith
Inez C. Messinger Smith, a lifelong resident of Nitro, WV, was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, after an extended illness.
Born the oldest of nine children to godly parents, she was raised in Lincoln County. As a young woman she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse, and also was a sales representative in the furniture business for many years.
She was a member of the East Nitro United Baptist Church for over 40 years, serving faithfully as a Sunday School teacher. She lived the life of “faith, family and friends” and was a good soldier for Christ, fighting the good fight until the end.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Smith of Carden City, S.C.; daughter, Vicki Stover of Barboursville, W.Va.; son, Tim Smith of Suwanee, Ga.; grandchildren, Jenifer Stover, Christina Smith and Aaron Smith; brother, Kern Messinger of Branchland; sisters, Kathlene Marlin of Lafollette, Tenn., Iris Adkins of West Hamlin, WV., and Marlene Farley of Edgewood, N.M.
Services were held Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in the West Virginia Memorial Chapel in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes, WV, with the, Rev. David Wilkinson, the Rev. Chuck Adkins and the Rev. Lawrence Slater officiating. Interment
in the Inter-Apostles Garden in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Ezra T. Templeton
Ezra T. Templeton, 89, of Tornado died Oct. 11, 2001, at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, St. Albans, after a short illness.
Mr. Templeton was retired from Columbia Gas Company, a member of Washington Street Church of Christ, St. Albans, a member of Hansford Senior Center, St. Albans, and a member of the Tornado Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Arthur “Teddy” and Dallas Templeton; brother, Orville “Pete” Templeton; parents, Ollie Roberts and Jack Templeton.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Templeton of Tornado; daughter and son-in-law, Deloris “Sissy” and Henry Coll of Tornado: daughter-in-law, Charlotte Templeton of Tornado; granddaughter, Bridget Templeton of Chicago; grandsons, Randy Coll of Hurricane, David Coll of Nitro, Lynn Templeton and Ben Templeton, both of St. Albans; great-granddaughters, Alison Coll and Michelle Coll, both of Hurricane, Sydney Coll of Nitro, Erica Parrish of Charleston; great-grandsons, Tyler Templeton and C.J. Templeton, both of St. Albans.

James C. Arrowood
James C. Arrowood, 85, of Glenwood, went home to be with the Lord and his loving wife of 57 years, Elsie Nibert Arrowood, on Thursday, October 11, 2001, at his residence. He was a retired grinder operator with INCO Alloys, and member of Fairfield United Methodist Church. The son of the late Peter Sherman and Clory Vanhoose Arrowood; one brother, Manford James Arrowood and one sister, Faye Vanhoose, also preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, October 13, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Max Spurlock and the Rev. Ronnie Long officiating. Burial in Starkey Cemetery, Glenwood. He is survived by two sons, Ronnie (Ruth Ann) Arrowood, and Gary (Linda) Arrowood, both of Glenwood, W.Va.; a daughter, Patricia Arthur of Lesage, W.Va.; a special friend, Bertha Stevens of Apple Grove, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, Scott Lambert, Tina Cremeans, Shana Lambert, Aimee Facemyer, Matt Arrowood, Leah Arrowood and Ryan Arrowood; and three great-grandchildren, Alex Facemyer, Brian Wilson and Nathan Johnson.
Frances Bryant Mayhew
Frances Bryant Mayhew, 70, of Nitro, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Charleston on November 2, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Leo and Lora Bryant. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Maxine Jones of Westminster, S.C., Patricia Logsdon of Jacksonville, Fla., and Phyllis Cash of Scott Depot.
Mrs. Mayhew was a 36-year resident of Florida. She was a retired bookkeeper from Court House Chevron of Hollywood, Fla., a former owner of Fran’s Creative Ceramics Studio, Miami, Fla. She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School and retired to her home state of West Virginia in 1994. She was a Christian and a former member of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church, Dunbar.
Survivors include her devoted and loving husband of 25 years, C.A. “Sonny” Mayhew; two daughters, Ramona K. Rhoads of Avon Park, Fla., Linda S. Scites of Bloomington, Ind.; two sisters, Doris Sharpe of Sod, WV., Norma Giovinazzi of Long Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Christopher, Carol, Jesse, and Joshua Scites of Bloomington; and two beloved aunts, Nettie Crawford of Charleston, and E. Louise Boggess of Dunbar. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, October 12, 2001 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with the Rev. Phil Suiter officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Diana Lee Fowler
Diana Lee Fowler, 38, of Scott Depot, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, from injuries received in an accident while at work.
Diana was a one-year resident of Scott Depot, formerly of Nitro. She
was an employee of Cummings Collection Service, Hurricane, a former employee of Best Western Motel in Nitro, and a former employee of Hand In Hand Day Care. She was a Lutheran.
Diana is survived by her husband, Harry G. Fowler; one son, Brent Bennett; and one daughter, Riannon Fowler, both at home; her mother, Nancy O’Neal of Florida; her father, Jerry Mullins of Kentucky; two brothers, Jerry Mullins Jr. of Tennessee, and Preston Mullins of Kentucky; and one sister, Lisa Watson of Pikeville, Ky.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 12, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Samuel Shupe officiating.
Thurmond Anderson Sr.
Thurmond Anderson Sr., 82 of Nitro, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Teays Valley Center, after a long illness.
He was a truck driver for Henson Trucking Company, and attended the Raymond Community Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a 40 year resident of Nitro and was formerly of Dunbar.
Surviving are his son, Thurmond “Butch” Anderson Jr. of Nitro; daughters, Marcella Atkinson of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Debbie Fish of Nitro; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with the Rev. John McCoy officiating. Burial in Anderson Cemetery, Dunbar.
