Edward R. “Eddie” Young
Edward R. “Eddie” Young, 60, of Nitro went home to be with the Lord Oct. 7, 2001, at his home.
Eddie was a nine-year resident of Nitro, formerly of Cross Lanes. He was an employee of John Amos Power Plant, a member of the United Steel Workers of America and a former barber in Cross Lanes for 15 years. He was also a member of the Nitro Masonic Lodge 170 AF&AM and a Marine Corps veteran. He was a Christian and attended Rock Branch Independent Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, E. Roy Young.
Eddie is survived by: his wife, Sonnie Lemon Young; his mother, Flora Marshall Young of Nitro; two stepdaughters, Kim Gordon Watson of Poca, Amy Gordon at home; one stepson, Rodney Gordon of Cross Lanes; four grandchildren, Megan Watson, Kaitlyn Watson, Matthew Gordon and Brian Gordon.
Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 9th, at Rock Branch Independent Church, Rock Branch, with Pastor Delbert Hawley and Pastor Jim Davis officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Davld Thomas
Michael David Thomas, 55, of Lesage died Monday, October 1, 2001. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, October 4, 2001, at St Joseph Catholic Church, Huntington, by Monsignor Lawrence Luciana and Father Julian Marneni. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born June 26, 1946, in Huntington, a son of the late Dr. Joseph D. and Mary Elizabeth Burkhart Thomas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in Vietnam. He was a member of VFW Post #9738 Guyandotte, a member of Brothers of the Wheel, Mother Chapter, and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at Marshall University. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Kathryn Thomas of Connecticut and Natasha Terran Thomas of Huntington; one brother and sister-in-law, Patrick J. and Sandra M. Thomas of Huntington; one nephew, Joseph Patrick Thomas; one niece, Rebecca Marie Thomas; and one aunt, Bette H. Thomas of Roanoke, Va. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
A. Rosalie Martin
A. Rosalie Martin, 80, of Parkersburg, formerly of Buffalo, died September 23, 2001, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald A. Martin.
She was a lifetime member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church and was Past Worthy Matron of the Buffalo Chapter 150 OES. She was a guidance counselor and schoolteacher, having taught 28 years in the Putnam County school system. She was a 1968 graduate of West Virginia State College with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a 1975 graduate of West Virginia University College of Graduate Studies with a master’s degree in guidance counseling. She retired from George Washington Junior High, Eleanor, in 1984.
Surviving: daughters, Sue Gilmore of Parkersburg and Donna Martin of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Doris Thornton of Atlanta and Lucille Calentine of Brandenburg, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Mildred Rebhan of Charleston; grandsons, Ben and Chris Gilmore of Parkersburg.
Service was held Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at Cunningham Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum, St. Albans, with Dr. Rod Barnett officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park. Phyllis M. Ball
Phyllis Marie Welker Ball, 66, of Winfield died September 24, 2001, at her home after a short illness.
She was the daughter of the late Howard and Inez Call Welker. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Ball, stepdaughter, Nell Sue Wymer of St. Albans, and brother, Darrell L. Welker of Hurricane.
She was a member of Judson Baptist Church, Winfield, and a 1954 graduate of Winfield High School.
Surviving: sisters, Eloise Guthrie of St. Albans, Clarice Ann Lawson of North Olmsted, Ohio, and Betty J. Cummings of Hurricane; brothers, Howard W. Welker Jr of Mooresville, Indiana, Jame Ray Welker of Hollywood, Florida, Billy Joe Welker of Strongsville, Ohio, Jerry Wayne Welker of Hurricane, and Ronald Edward Welker of Mount Dora, Florida; stepson, Carl H. Ball of Powell, Tennessee; several nephews and nieces; several stepgrandchildren and stetgreat-grandchildren.

Billie Jean Thomas
Billie Jean “B.J.” Roberts Thomas, 51, of Lexington, Ohio died Monday, September 24, 2001, at home following a two-and-a-half year battle with cancer.
She was born in Charleston, West Virginia, and graduated from Winfield High School in 1968.
B.J. earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Speech Pathology from Marshall University. While in both high school and college, B.J. was very active in theater productions.
She had worked 12 years as a speech pathologist with Highland Public Schools in Morrow County, Ohio.
She was a member of Berean Baptist Church, Mansfield, where she was active in the drama ministry, and has formerly served as a Sunday school teacher.
B.J.was a member of the Galion Community Theater, where she was active both on stage and behind-the-scenes. She was also a member of Spoken Images,, a Mansfield based drama troupe, and had performed with the Bucyrus Little Theater and the Mansfield Playhouse. She was a member and former president of the North Central Ohio Speech & Hearing Association.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Roberts, and her mother-in-law, L. Vada Thomas.
Surviving: husband of 25 years, Tom L. Thomas; daughters, Maureen E. Thomas and Natalie J. Thomas, both of Lexington; mother, Maxine (Anderson) Roberts of Winfield; sister and brother-in-law, Terri & Adam Valleau of Baltimore, Maryland; nephew, Chris Valleau; father-in-law, Oshel R. “Ort” Thomas of Mansfield; sister-in-law, Marsha Wyandt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Leah Thelma Engle
Leah Thelma Engle, 87, of Scott Depot died September 24, 2001, at Teays Manor, Hurricane.
She was a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church and a former choir member. She was also a member of Hannah Circle, O.W.L.S. Thomas Aliff Sunday School Class, Charleston Women’s Club, a former member of Bream Presbyterian Church, Charleston, past president of Women of the Church and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her huabns, Oliver D. Engle, and her brother, William DeArment.
Surviving: daughters, Sara Sowards of Scott Depot, Nancy Alker of St. Albans and Marcia Jo Lucas of Elkview; brothers, Harold DeArment of St. Petersburg, Florida, Richard DeArment of Wheeler, Texas, and Phillip DeArment of Littleton, Colorado; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Rev. James S. Dolin
The Rev. James S. Dolin, 84, of Scott Depot died Tuesday, September 25, 2001, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.
He was a retired Baptist minister and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Hurricane. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Surviving: wife of 62 years, Mary Simmons Dolin; sisters, Lelia Pignato and Alice Hood, both of Ovido, Florida.
Service was held Saturday, September 29, 2001, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Millard Mitchell and Pastor John A. Mason officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park.
Evelyn I. Rowh
Evelyn Irene Rowh died September 27, 2001.
She was born April 13, 1928 in Webster City, Iowa to Clinton and Letitia McCoskey.
Surviving: husband, Coy A. Rowh; daughter and son-in-law, Patty and John Turner of Teays Valley; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Mark and Linda Rowh of Dublin, Virginia and Alan and Diana Rowh of Poca; seven grandchildren, J.P. and Matthew Turner, Lisa, Jenny, David, Terry Rowh, and Tisha Runions; one great-grandchild, Jade Michaela Rowh, who was born the same day that Evelyn died; sister, Gladis Ewing; brother and sisters-in-law, Margaret and Carl Roher, Madge McCoskey, Margie King, June and Robert “Hoot” Yates, Max and Joselyn Rowh, and George Jividen.

Addie Lou Pierce
Addie Lou Pierce, 73, of Scott Depot died September 29, 2001 in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was born October 15, 1927 in Central City.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ira Spencer Pierce.
She was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and attended Alderson-Broaddus College as a nursing student. She was once active in the Women’s Society and Guild of First united Methodist Church, South Charleston, and a member of the South Charleston Women’s Club. She was active as a Cub Scout den mother and was a senior regent in the Charleston Area Women of the Moose.
As a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, she served as assistant to the Junior Choir director. Addie and her husband, Wally, served as Senior High Youth directors from 1971-1974.
A talented craftswomen, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, making ceramics, making puppets and performing with them. She enjoyed quilting and made a quilt especially for the West Virginia Centennial. She also made, and taught others to make, Chrismon ornaments for the church Chrismon trees. Her hobbies included collecting various buttons from presidential campaigns, collecting seashells and collecting and refinishing antique furniture. She enjoyed keeping her family tree information up-to-date.
Surviving: husband, of 45 years, Wallace E. Pierce; daughter, Pamela Sims of Scott Depot; sisters, Evelyn Austin of Dunbar and Mary Vivian Miller of Cape Coral, Florida; grandchildren, Tonya and Tyrone Pierce of Davie, Florida and Devona and Angelika Sims of Scott Depot.
Service was held Wednesday, October 3, 2001, at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. George Bendell, the Rev. Kevin Chennell and Dr. J.D. Harrah officiating. “Jeannie” Glada Jean Morrison
On Tuesday, Sept 25, 2001, “Jeannie” Glada Jean Morrison, 58, wife of Paul E. Morrison, went to be with the Lord. She is the daughter of the late Frank and Madeline Blake McCoy. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Lee McCoy. Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Paul E. Morrison Jr. and Sara Morrison; one daughter and son-in-law, Bambi Lynn and Greg Smith, all of Barboursville; four loving grandchildren, Gregory and Halie Smith and Trevor and Hunter Morrison; one sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Ernest Ferguson, Jr. of Barboursville; two brothers, Louis “Butch” McCoy and his wife, Sandy of Tennessee and Jim McCoy of Michigan; and two special sisters-in-law, Pauline Bragg and Pearl Stevenson of Proctorville and many family, friends and loved ones. Mrs. Della Mae “Pinky” Horvath, 80, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Sunday, September 30, 2001, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, by Father Joseph Peterson and Dr. Jerry Warren. Entombment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born September 6, 1921 in Columbus, Ohio, a daughter of the late Carl Rein and Minnie Charlotte Ward Rein Staten. She was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Church and was a member of the Women’s Club at Our Lady of Fatima Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex A. Horvath, and one daughter, Elizabeth Charlotte Horvath. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Al and Mary Horvath of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra “Sandee” and Howard Sturgeon of Ona; seven grandchildren, Michael Summer of Gainesville, Fla., Heather Kyle, Aimee Dorey, Tim Dorey Jr. and Blake Sturgeon, all of Ona, and David Horvath and James Horvath of Key Largo, Fla.; and one great-grandchild, Alec Dorey. Jarrell Junior Hodges, 77, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 27, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Monday, October 1, 2001 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Harry Rowe and Rev. Craig Coster. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born March 16, 1924, in Hurricane, a son of the late William J. and Effie Ann Dean Hodges. He was a retired employee of Houdaille Industries; a member of Barboursville Baptist Church, Barboursville Lions Club, Barboursville Harvest Club, Barboursville Senior Citizens Group; a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WW II and Pearl Harbor, and a member of VFW #9738, Huntington. He is survived by his wife, Eloise Bryan Hodges; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha Linn and Billy Dean of Glenwood and Cindy Lee and Bill O. Brown of Barboursville; two sisters, Wilma Riley of Dayton, Ohio, and Norma Lee Davis of Pliny, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Anna Rexanne Brown, Candice Linn Dean and Billy Robert Dean Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Jonathan Lee Dean.
