Clarence T. “Jake” White, 86, of Barboursville, widow of Josephine Matthews White, died Saturday, November 17, 2001 in St. Mary’s Hospital. He was retired vice president of Standard Food Service Co. Inc. Survivors include one son, C. Tim White of Huntington. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 20, 2001 at Beard Mortuary, Huntington; burial in Ridgelawn Cemetery. Marc Conrad Christopher
Marc Conrad Christopher, 53, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Vernon Perry and the Rev. Truman Adkins. Burial in Bartram Cemetery. He was born June 2, 1948 in Huntington, a son of the late Richard and Theresa Adkins Christopher. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by one brother, Louis Christopher. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Speakman Christopher; one daughter, Kayla Zinn of Decatur, Ill.; three sons, Lance Christopher of Huntington, and Jamie Dailey and Tim Dailey, both of Portage, Ind.; one brother and two sisters-in-law, John and Blanche Christopher of Huntington and Juanita Christopher of East Lynn and one grandchild.

Philip H. Thurmond
Philip H. Thurmond, 101, of Seal Beach, Calif., formerly of Alderson W.Va, died Nov. 15, 2001, in Seal Beach. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Philip was born February 3, 1900, in Alderson, son of the late James William and Barbara Sanger Thurmond. The town of Thurmond, W.Va., was named after his grandfather, Captain William Dabney Thurmond. His wife, Grace Bierman Thurmond, and 11 brothers and sisters also preceded him in death. Mr. Thurmond attended the Baptist Academy in Alderson, which later became part of Alderson-Broaddus College in Phillipi. Survivors include one son, Philip of Montana; one daughter, Barbara of Seal Beach; and one nephew, Rev. Harry Thurmond Rowe of Ona Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Emmer Lee Williams
Dorothy Emmer Lee Williams, 85, of Huntington went home to be with her Lord November 16, 2001. Funeral services were conducted Monday, November 19, 2001 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Pastor Sam Vance. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born August 31, 1916, in Barboursville, a daughter of the late Fred E. and Betty Carper Steele. She was a retired house mother at the Delta Zeta Sorority in Huntington. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Donald Anderson of Huntington with whom she made her home; two grandsons, Mark Sanney and Dale Anderson; three granddaughters, Leah Lewis, Laura Talbert and Maria Whitman; 16 great-grandchildren including five special great grandchildren, Dale II, Justin, Aaron, Darien and baby Andrew. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Edward Basil “Bud” Johnston
Edward Basil “Bud” Johnston, 65, of Ona, WV, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at his residence. Funeral service were conducted Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Winford Curry officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Bud was born March 12, 1936, in Logan County, W.Va., a son of the late Basil E. and Elva King Johnston. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran. He was retired from Overnight Trucking. He was also a retired sales clerk for Tri-State Express and was a member of Susannah Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice Ann Payton Johnston; two sons, Jay Johnston of Huntington and Troy Johnston of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Penny Finley of Ona and Joy Harshbarger of Barboursville; four brothers, Franklin Johnston of Eleanor, W.Va., Wes Johnston of Altha, Fla., Crawford Johnston of Milton and Jerry Johnston of Louisburg, N.C.; two sisters, Edith Adkins of Huntington and Rosemary Raines of West Hamlin; 10 grandchildren, Sarah, Stacy and Katelyn Johnston, all of Huntington, Christopher Chapman of Barboursville, Sheena Chapman of Ona, Joshua Moore, Jessica and Anthony Harshbarger, all of Barboursville, and Tiffani and Adam Johnston, both of Cincinnati; one great-grandson Jeremiah Samples of Ona, and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Bennett
Mrs. Ruth Bennett, 87, of Hurricane, forermly of Whitmer, died November 12, 2001, at Teays Manor, Huricane, after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a Methodist and a member of Dryfork Senior Citizens, Randolph County.
She was preceded in death by her son, Glenn Bennett.
Surviving: husband, Hansel Bennett; daughters, Carolyn Jones of Rockville, Maryland and Doris Schaefer and husband, Chris, of Longview, Washington; sons, Wayne Bennett and wife, Nancy, of Eleanor and Frank Bennett and wife, Rhonda, of Hinton, Virginia; grandchildren, Carole Anne Tyrrell, Allison Childers, Rebecca Ruth Coakley, Richard Noland, Amy DiPalma, Kevin Bennett, Douglas Bennett, Justin Schaefer, Kimberly Ruth Schaefer, and Nathaniel Schaefer; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, November 15, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Ed Grant officiating. An additional service was held Friday, November 16, 2001, at Kimble Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Joe Mininger officiating. Burial was in Northfork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton.
The family suggests memorial donations to Teays Manor, PO Box 1045, Hurricane WV 25526.

Murtie M. Coleman
Mrs. Murtie M. Coleman, 91, of Winfield died November 13, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a six-year resident of Winfield, formerly of Liberty and Mammouth. She was a member of Barnett Chapel Church and Advent Christian in Mammouth.
Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her husband, Otmer H. Coleman, and daughter, Mary Ann Dumas.
Surviving: children, Sidney Burgess of Winfield, Franklin E. Coleman of Muncie, Indiana, Michael Coleman of Scott Depot, and John Coleman of Oak Hill; sister, Dora Edith Herman of Middleport, Ohio; special niece, Nadine Richards of Cedar Grove; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, November 16, 2001, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Red House.

Christina M. Anderson
Mrs. Christina Margaret Anderson, 71, of Hurricane died November 14, 2001 in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a volunteer at Thomas Memorial Hospital for 10 years.
Surviving: husband, Howard Anderson; daughters, Catherine Johnston of Hurricane, Margaret Christine Spillers of Canyon Lake, California, and Patricia Lee Scott of Hurricane; son, Michael George Anderson of Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Saturday, November 17, 2001, at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Hurricane, with the Rev. Father Neil Buchlein officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Ishmael “Dink” E. Hensley
Ishmael “Dink” E. Hensley, 91, of Ona, went to be with the Lord Monday, November 12, 2001. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2001, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Phillip Bower. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born October 19, 1910, in Barboursville, a son of the late Pearl and Blanche Merritt Hensley. He retired from the CSX Corporation, was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Hurricane, and was active with the Barboursville Senior Citizens. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Holley and Susan Midge Williams, one brother, Harry Lee Hensley and two half brothers, Harold Hensley and George Ernest Hensley. He is survived by his wife, Alma L. Ruley Hensley; three daughters and two sons-in-law, O’Della Harbour, Carolyn and Donald Lewis, all of Ona, and Deloris and Edward Hickman of Clarksburg, W.Va.; one half brother, Delmar Hensley of Ohio; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a very special friend of the family, Glenna Loftis. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington for their care and support.

Ada Leslie Nugen Cooper
Ada Leslie Nugen Cooper, 92, of Milton, W.Va., devoted wife of the Rev. James Wesley “J.W.” Cooper for almost 74 years, died Monday, November 12, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital. She was born January 5,1909, the daughter of the late William Verdra and Roxanna Amelia Bower Nugen. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Booth, Bessie Peters, Letha Nugen, Dora DeHart and Oreda Keaton. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Carl J. and Nelma Cooper of Milton, and W. Ezra and Betty Cooper of Hurricane; one daughter and son-in-law, Lorene and Jack Rooper of Barboursville; Mary Jean Cooper of Milton, the widow of her deceased son, the Rev. James Loyd Cooper. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and three great- greatgrandchildren. She was a homemaker and loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of many churches in southern West Virginia in connection with her husband’s ministry, and presently was a member of Springdale Freewill Baptist Church at Hurricane, WVa. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m Thursday, November 15, 2001 at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev. George Blackshire officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park Milton Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Azel G. Turley
Azel G. Turley, 78, of Ona, WV, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday November 10, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born December 28, 1922, The son of the late J.T. “Tom” and Agnes Turley. A brother, Bill M. Turley also precedes him in death. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at Milton Baptist Church, with Dr. T.J. Dubose officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, where there was an Honor Guard by Fort Knox. He was a 1940 graduate of Milton High School, attended Alderson-Braddus and Graduate of Marshall University; He also was a veteran of WWII serving three years in the Persian Gulf Command in the Medical Corp. A retired Agent with State Farm Insurance Companies, and faithful member, Teacher, Deacon and other Capacities of Milton Baptist Church, also, The Milton Lions Club, and a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Turley is survived by his loving wife, Maxine Morrison Turley; Three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Carol Turley of Milton, Rev. David and Leslie Turley of Japan, and Dana and Brenda Turley of Huntington; One Daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Jack Vickers of Ona. Nine Grandchildren, Lara, Daryl, Joel and Carissa Turley of Milton; Holly and Jacque Vickers of Ona; Shinya, Takesi and Joanna Turley of Japan; also surviving one sister, Winona Turley Rimmer of Ona, one sister-in-law, Lola Pridemore Turley of Norwood, NC. Several nieces and nephews. Grandsons and nephews served as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations to the Milton Baptist Church building fund. Heck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dora Mae Spencer
Dora Mae Stutler Spencer, 61, of Scott Depot died November 5, 2001, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church and a former member of McKinnon Memorial Presbyterian Church and Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, both in Charleston. She was a past member of the Junior Women’s Club and a graduate of Dunbar High School Class of 1958.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade and Hazel Garrett Stutler, and sisters, Marie Raines and Hazel Ernestine Stutler.
Surviving: husband, James R. Spencer; daughters, Tamara Lynn Spencer of Charleston and Robin Pennington of Columbia, South Carolina; son, Rusty Spencer of Scott Depot; sisters, Mary Jane Birthisel of Winfield, Dollena Martin of Ligonier, Indiana, and Lenora Casto of North Lawrence, Ohio; brothers, Alfred Stutler of Kenna, Leonard and Richard Stutler, both of Ripley, James and Raymond Stutler, both of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Spencer, Laura and Trevor.
Memorial service was held November 7, 2001 at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. J.D. Harrah officiating.

Kenneth Ray Hess
Kenneth Ray Hess, 78, of Hurricane died November 3, 2001, in CAMC Memorial Division, after a short illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide and was a member of Riverlawn Presbyterian Church. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and a 34-year resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Hilda Casto Hess; daughter, Alice Lea Clagg of Hurricane; brother, Ralph P. Hess of Branford, Florida; sister, Gladys Robinson of Lewisburg; grandchildren, Joseph and Jessica Clagg, Jennifer, Joseph Ray and Pamela Sue Hess.
Service was held November 7, 2001 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. James Boggess officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Ruby Paxton Blair
Ruby Paxton Blair, 84, of Scott Depot died November 5, 2001, at Regency Place, Scott Depot, after an extended illness.
She was retired from Union Carbide, was a member of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. She was a 30-year resident of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Lee Blair.
Graveside service was held November 7, 2001, at Cunningham Memorial Park Upper Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Arnie A. Chaney
Arnie A. Chaney, 91, of Scott Depot died November 5, 2001 after a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church, Culloden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, and a son, Michael.
Surviving: daughter, Connie Beasley and her husband, Tom, of Scott Depot; two grandsons, Alan and Eric Beasley, both of Scott Depot.
Service was held November 7, 2001 at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Spurlock officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Izetta “Babe” Bennett
Izetta “Babe” Bennett, 79, of Hurricane died at home November 8, 2001.
She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, and a son, Donnie.
Surviving: sons, Bab and Harold, both of Hurricane, and Ron of Sissonville; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, November 10, 2001, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Olive M. Craig
Mrs. Olive M. Craig, 102, died on November 7, 2001 in Teays Valley.
Mrs. Craig, formerly of Charleston and Cross Lanes, was a longtime resident of Putnam County and was a member of Cross Lanes United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert C. Craig; daughters, Helen Casto, Ruth Byrnside and Hilda Hill.
Surviving: son, Harold W. Craig of Winfield; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, November 10, 2001, at Cross Lanes United Methodist Church with Pastor Aslam Barkat officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Barbara Ann Fisher
Barbara Ann Fisher, 64, of Hurricane died Thursday, November 8, 2001, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
She was a homemaker, attended Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans, and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: daughrer, Becky Marteen of Hurricane; sons, Eugene “Gene” Fisher of Elkview and Robert Fisher of St. Albans; sister, Marie Meadows of Nitro; six grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, November 10, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor David Bess officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.

Norma L. “Sug” Boster
Norma L. “Sug” Boster, 75, of Culloden died Thursday, November 8, 2001, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after an extended illness.
She was a memberr of Youngs Chapel, St. Albans, and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Boster, and her parents, Robert and Lena Cathern Snyder Thomas.
Surviving: daughters, Sharon Sowards of Hurricane and Catheryn Briscoe of Winfield; sons, Wilson Collins of Fraziers Bottom, William Collins of Center Junction, Iowa, Jesse Collins of Culloden, Bernie Collins of Winfield, and Joe Collins of St. Albans; sisters, Thelma Clark of Culloden, Inez Beaver, Lillian Ferrell, and Cora Thomas, all of Hurricane; brothers, Bernie Thomas of Southern Pines, North Carolina and Henry Thomas of St. Albans; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a host of loving nieces, nephews and many “special friends.”
Service was held Sunday, November 11, 2001, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Daymond Estep and the Rev. Robert Kelly officiating. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield.

Earl M. Lenhart
Earl M. Lenhart, 69, of Scott Depot died November 10, 2001, after a short illness.
He was born in Delaware, Ohio in 1931. He served in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1952. He married Harriet Johnston of Marion, Ohio in 1953 and together they raised six children.
He became general Manager of Broughton Dairy in Charleston in 1970. He held numerous offices, including president of the Charleston Area Merchants and Retailers Association. He was actively involved in the Dunbar Lions Club, Humphrey United Methodist Church and St. John United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Cecil Lenhart; brothers, John Lenhart, Marion Lenhart, George Lenhart, Robert Lenhart, and James Lenhart; sisters, Mary Johnston and Jane Henry.
Surviving: wife, Harriet; daughters, Sheri Saunders and husband, Larry, of Lancaster, Ohio, and Katy England and husband, Barry, of Fayetteville, Georgia; sons, Tom Lenhart and wife, Tina, of Virginia Beach,, John Lenhart of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Gary Lenhart and wife, Beverly, of Virginia Beach, Andrew Lenhart and wife, Eda, of Richmond, Virginia; sister, Cecil Mae Woodworth of Cortland, New York; 12 grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
His eyes were donated to the West Virginia Live Bank and his body to Marshal University Medical School
A memorial service will be held at St. John United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 17, 2001, with a reception following at the family home. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

June Marie Sovine
June Marie Sovine, 61, of Hurricane died suddenly November 10, 2001 at home.
She served as a secretary and bus driver with the Punam County School Board for 17 years. She was a four-term magistrate having served for 16 years, and was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Mary Allen, and father-in-law, Claude W. Sovine.
Surviving: husband, James R. Sovine; sons, Robert Allen Armstrong of Hamlin and James David Armstrong of Groveland, Florida; sister, Joyce Thacker of Milton, mother-in-law, Bernice Sovine; stepson, William Russell Sovine of Hurricane; eight grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles L. Stanley
Charles L. Stanley, 63, of Hurricane, formerly of Kayford, died November 11, 2001, at the home of Danny Burns and Candi Garrison.
He was a Navy veteran, served on the USS Hawkins and was a member of Operation Engineers Local 132.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Kathern Keith Stanley.
Surviving; daughters, Candi Garrison of Hurricane, Dedura Turley and Kelly Stanley, both of St. Albans; son, Dana Stanley of Maiden, North Carolina; stepson, Jason Hodges of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Holley and Connie Call of Hurricane, Betty Mullins and Peggy Tawney of Southside; brothers, Bill, Virgil, Roger and Gary of Hurricane, and Danny of Southside.
Service was held November 14, 2001 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. James Jobe and the Rev. Kim Stone officiating. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery, Hurricane.
