Jonathan Lee Browne
Jonathan Lee Browne, infant son of John and Jan Browne of Hurricane, was stillborn March 18, 2002, in Women and Children’s Hospital.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by brother, Luke Austin Browne at home; maternal grandparents, Jack and Linda Gibson of Hurricane; maternal great-grandparents, Dennis and Alice Gibson of Hurricane and Goldie Thornton of Nitro; paternal grandparents, Howard and Jean Browne of Hurricane; paternal great-grandparents, Howard and Gladys Browne of Culloden; several aunts and uncles.
Graveside service was held Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, with the Rev. Dan Hogan and the Rev. Father Olof Scott officiating. Chapman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Violet M. Craghead
Violet M. Craghead, 86, of Scott Depot died March 16, 2002, after a long illness.
She was retired co-owner of Gauley Bridge Western Auto. She was also a cook at Charleston Memorial Hospital from 1949 to 1955, and Union Carbide Tech Center, South Charleston, from 1955 to 1969. She was a member of Fayetteville Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis O. Craighead; daughters, Frances Faith Meadows and Carol Ellen Drennen; three sisters and two brothers.
Surviving: son, Danny O. Craghead of Scott Depot; sister, Bernice Rubritz of Dover, Delaware; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steven C. Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Athens Cemetery, Athens WV.
James L. Jordan
James L. “Jim” Jordan, 75, of Eleanor died March 18, 2002, at home following a short illness.
He was a retired carpenter and construction worker, a member of the Carpenters Union and attended First Baptist Church of Eleanor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry O. and Pearl Crum Jordan, who were original homesteaders at Eleanor.
Surviving: wife, Carolyn Jordan; sister, Ruth Aileen Hudson of Hurricane; brother, Glenn Edward Jordan of Gulfport, Mississippi; special friend, Dimple Cockrell of Eleanor.
Graveise service was held Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor, with Pastor David Panaro Jr. officiating. Raynes Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Robert T. Slack
Robert T. Slack, 74, of Hurricane, formerly of Harwick PA passed away Thursday, March 14, 2002, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He loved life, his family and went out of his way to help others.
He was born September 2, 1927 in Harwick. He served in Germany with the Army Medical Corps. from 1946-47. He attended Pittsburgh University receiving a Mining Engineering degree (B.A.) in 1957 while working for Duquesne Light for 25 years. He went to Barnes & Tucker in Barnesboro PA while living in Indiana PA for 5 years. His next position was with Empire Energy, Standard Oil of Indiana, while residing in Craig CO. He transferred to Middlesboro KY for 1 1/2 years then spending 2 years in Hazzard KY while living in Harrogate TN. The later years 1988 to 1995, he was with Cyprus Kanawha Corp, Mt. Carbon WV, living in Hurricane. He did some consulting work out of Cross Lanes after 42 years in the work force. He then enjoyed his garden, flowers and all yard work. He returned to golf, playing at Sleepy Hollow with Dave, Pete and John.
He was preceded in death by his father Joseph and mother Frances (Carson) Korzon.
Surviving: wife, Millie of Willow Wood Circle in Hurricane; son, Robert J. of Rockville, Maryland; daughters, Paula of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania and Kim of Wilton Manor, Florida; brother, Edward of Allison Park PA; sister, Dorothy Hertz of Allison Park; nephews Ed Jr., Erick and Kirk; nieces, Judy and Christine; a precious granddaughter, Ashley Nichoel of Maryland; uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends and neighbors also survive.
Robert spent 15 months at Regency Personal Care Home in Scott Depot then was moved on March 11th to Hubbard Hospice House in South Charleston where he passed away on March 14th at 10:50 p.m. His anatomical gift was to Marshall University Human Gift Registry for Research.
A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Harwick in April, 2002.
Mary Frances Jarrell
Mary Frances Jarrell, 93, of Hurricane, formerly of Milton, died March 20, 2002, in Sunbridge of Putnam.
She was born May 28, 1908 in Nelsonville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Charles and Ella Kiser. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Macky Jerrell; daughter, Virginia Jacks; sons, William and Charles Jarrell; brothers, Andrew Calvin Kiser and Charles Kiser; sister, Rhonda Kiser; and one grandchild.
Mary attended Bethel Baptist Church.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin and Lois Jarell of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Willard and Betty Jarrell of Sheffeild Lake, Ohi, Dillard and Martie Jarrell of Hurricane, Elmer and Patty Jarrell of Ocala, Flirida, and Kenneth and Jamie Jarrell of Morriston, Florida; daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline and Harold Nicholas of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Linda and Dave Tester of Parm, Ohio; sisters, Rose Means of Charleston and Ella Ward of Medina, Ohio; 30 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, March 23, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Winford Curry officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.
Lucy J. Settle
Lucy Jane Rumbaugh Settle, 80, of Hurricane died March 19, 2002, at Sunbridge of Putnam.
She was born March 29, 1921 in Scott Depot to the late Curtis and Wilmoth Rumbaugh. In additon to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sister, Laeuna “Nonie” Erwin and Virginia “Ginny” Lazear.
She was a retired teacher from the Putnam County school sytem for more than 20 years. She was a member of the First Baptisjt Church in Hurricane.
Surviving: husband of 59 years, John C. Settle Sr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and William Norris and Valerie and Joe Racer, all of Hurricane; sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Kathy Settle of Chloe and James and Jennifer Settle of Hurricane; granddaughters, Denise Norris, Samantha Racer and Melissa Shick; grandsons, Joseph Racer, Zachary and Nathan Settle; great-grandchildren, Hanna Shick, Cas and Eric Shick; sister, Wilmoth Curtis Rumbaugh O’Dell of Blacksburg, Virginia.

Wilma M. Jeffries
Wilma M. Jeffries, 87, of Red House died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Sunbridge of Putnam following a short illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a retired clerk for Gill and Burdette General Store, Winfield and Farmers Feed and Supply Store, Poca, a member of O.E.S. No. 150, Buffalo, a member of the Hometown Senior Cuitizens and was the olders living member of the Riverside Baptist Church, Red House.
Surviving: nephews, Charles “Buddy” Jeffries of Red House and HJames “Jimmy” jeffries of Indianapolis, Indiana; nieces, Billy Jo Sutherland of Hurricane and Janet Douglas of Hometown; several great and great-great-nephews and nieces.
Service was held Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Riverside Baptisjt Churchff with the Rev. Mike Hanna officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Wilson Meadows
Wilson Meadows, 87, of Milton, widower of Mary M. Meadows, went home to be with the Lord on March 22, 20O2 at his residence. Funeral services were held 2:30 pm Monday, March 25, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev Ray Sovine officiating. Burial in Bias Chapel Cemetery, Milton. He was the son the late Larry Cornelus and Ada Elsie Smith Meadows. He was also preceded in death by one son, Paul Keith Meadows, one grandson, Jeffery Meadows; one sister and three brothers. He was a retired farmer and a former employee of Blenko Glass. He is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Virginia and George Shirkey of Culloden, Patricia Esposito of Milton and Shirley and Bobby Litchfield of Milton; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Archie E Meadows, Elwood and Sue Meadows, Zelin and Evelyn Meadows, all of Milton, and Daniel and Judy Meadows of Salt Rock, one daughter-in-law, Nancy Meadows of Milton, one brother, Hershell Meadows of Milton; two sisters, Ina Meadows of Culloden and Inez Woodward of Coshocton Ohio; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rose Anna Bock, 94, of Milton, formerly of Queens, N.Y., died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 25, 2002, at Christ the King Lutheran Church by the Rev. Russel Yoak. Burial in Lutheran/All Faiths Cemetery, Middle Village, N.Y. She was born December 20, 1907, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Horn Kalsch. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bock; one sister, Millie Stadler and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Bock. Mrs. Bock was a homemaker and member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. Hilda Jo Estep, of Huntington died Tuesday, March 19, 2002 in Milton. She was a homemaker. Nellie Katherine Buck, 81, of Grimms Landing died March 12, 2002, at home following a short illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Grimms Landing, a homemaker and attended Oma Chapel Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Dessie Stewart Buck; three sisters, Oma Tucker, Gracie Buck and Virgie Grady; one brother, Harrison Buck.
Surviving: daughter, Lorraine Rhodes of Grimms Landing; son, Jack Buck of Buffalo; sister, Genevieve Call of Bidwell, Ohio; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Thelma E. Davis
Thelma E. Davis, 80, of Happy Times Apartments, Hurricane, died March 13, 2002, after a short illness.
Mrs. Davis was born January 8, 1922. She was a longtime resident of Bancroft and a Protestant.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston “Peggy” Davis.
Surviving: son, Preston Davis of Cocoa, Florida; daughters, Josephine Bailey of North Easton, Ohio, Juanita Johns of Cross Lanes, and Alice Louise Wick of Cocoa; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Delmar Carney of Florida, Frank Carney of Charleston, and Wilson Carney of Ohio; sisters, Ruha Rice of Parkersburg and Jenny Anderson of Vienna; a host of friends.

Mrs. Claire L. Holden, 68, of Scott Depot died March 8, 2002, at home very suddenly.
She received a bachelor degree in chemistry from Cornell University and was a retired chemist for Mobile Corporation, Edison, New Jersey. She was a member of the Newcomers Club and an Episcopalian.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Patrick Connors of Hurricane; grandchildren, Christopher, Allison, Scott, Ashley, Eddie and Kevin.

Dr. James P. Aliff
Dr. James Paul Aliff, 87, of Scott Depot died March 13, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.
Dr. Aliff was a 1936 graduate of New River State College, Montgomery, and a 1940 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia. After serving his residency at Charleston General Hospital, Dr. Aliff entered private practice in Charleston, where he remained active for 35 years. Following his retirement from private practice, he continued serving others through his work with the Hygen Clinics for several more years.
Dr. Aliff was director and founding member of the former Putnam County Hospice, a member of the West Virginia Meeical Association, American Medical Association, and Berry Hills Country Club. An avid golfer, he was known to his friends simply as “Bear.”
Preceding him in death in 1993 was his wife of 57 years, Dorothy C. Aliff.
Surviving: daughter, Lela Paylick of Ludington, Michigan and Paula Newell of Denton, Texas; sons, Thomas of Hurricane and Charles of Charleston; brother, Dr. Robert Aliff, formerly of Charleston, now residing in Tampa, Florida; eight grandchildren and four grrat-grandchildren.

Vinson V. Handley
Vinson V. Handley, 71, of Hurricane died March 13, 2002, at Hubbard Hospice House.
Vinson was born in Culloden on March 26, 1930 to Clarence and Lula Clark Handley. He served in the United States Marine Corps and retired after 36 years from Union Carbide, Institute Plant.
Surviving: loving companion, Anoway Mary Smith and her family; daughters, Karen Handley of Barboursville, Carolyn Handley of Culloden and Kimberly Means of Barboursville; sister, Rosalie Chapman of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Phyllis Ann Hix, 64, of Teays Valley died March 13, 2002.

Hazel Wise
Hazel Sovine Wise, 95, died March 14, 2002.
The daughter of Clara Elmeda Montgomery and Riley Washington Sovine, her early life was spent on Sleepy Creek, the family home since Henry Sovine arrived in the Teays Valley in 1838. She was the youngest and last surviving of 12 children.
Hazel married H. Gordon Wise of Hurricane in 1930 and they raised three children, Loretta, late wife of Robert l. Beaver, now of Amite, Louisiana; Lowell Gene Wise of McLean, Virginia; and Roger Wise of Scott Depot. Hazel and Gordon retired to Florida in 1968, and to a home near Loretta’s in 1990. Gordon, Loretta and one grandchild preceded her in death. In addition to her sons, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, many other relatives survive.
Graveside service was held Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Barboursville. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Lois J. Szekely, 74 of Huntington, WV, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 in St. Mary’s Hospital. She was born October 19, 1927, in Williamson, WV, a daughter of the late Sidney and Effie Jane Blevins Blackburn. She was employed in the personnel department at Aristech Corp. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a member of Forever Young. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Charles Stephen Szekely, in 1982. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Renee Szekely, of Barboursville; two daughters, Trish Szekely of Austin, Texas, and Priscilla Szekely of Ashland, Ky; two brothers and their wives, Russell and Anna Blackburn of Huntington and Ovid and Alene Blackburn of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren, T.J. Mary Edna Wooten
Mary Edna Wooten, 49, of Milton, passed away Friday, March 15, 2002, in Medical College of Virginia Hospital and Physicians, Richmond, Va. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Winford Curry officiating. Burial followed in Spencer-Elkins Family Cemetery, Milton. She was born March 28, 1952, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Albert and Christeen Elkins Weatherholt. She was a volunteer for 4-H and FFA and was dedicated to the youth of our community. She was instrumental in the Cabell County Special Lamb Project and the Cabell County Ham, Bacon and Egg. She is survived by her husband, Steven A. Wooten; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Steven Douglas and Kelly Wooten and Jeremiah Wooten, all of Milton; two sisters, Peggy and Ray Scarberry of Ona and Faye and Johnny Chapman of Milton; one brother, Lemuel and Dianna Weatherholt of Milton; sister-in-law, Rose Jackson of Florida; mother-in-law, Arbutus Wooten of Florida; and a host of family, friends, nieces and nephews. Larry Dale Neace II
Larry Dale Neace II, 35, of Huntington, passed away Friday, March 8, 2002. Private funeral services were conducted Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Charles Martin. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. He was born May 2, 1966, in Huntington, a son of Larry Dale and Margaret Chinn Neace of Huntington. He was a member of Madison Avenue Church of God and Local 80 Insulators. He was preceded in death by one brother, Rickey Lee Neace. He is survived by his wife, Kelli Gray Neace; one son, D.J., of Huntington; one sister, Carolyn Neace of Huntington; two brothers, Ronald J. Neace and Michael W. Neace, both of Huntington; and three special friends, Thomas E. Gray of Arizona, Tom E. Gray Jr. of Proctorville and Scott Gray of Huntington (Flunks). James Roy Wood
James Roy Wood, 83, of Barboursville, W Va. died March 5, 2002, at Baptist East Hospital, Louisville, KY, of a stroke. His parents Clyde Wood, Grace Patton and sisters Florence and Lucille, preceded Jim in death. Jim was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart. After his military discharge, he served with the Army Corp of Engineers on the Ohio River as a dredge boat deckhand. He left this position for the United States Postal Service as a truck driver/dispatcher. He retired in 1979. Jim is survived by six sisters, Iris Adkins, Helen Grefe, Ruth Powell, Ruby Rodriguez, Sarah Sorenson, Virginia Mosch, and brother Clyde (Junior) Wood. Jim married to Myrtle Rose Horn, had six children who loved him very much: James Wood, Joan Wood, June Hogan, Jacqueline Ellington, Joseph Wood, and Julie Wood who all contributed to this obituary. Jim also had 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Arch L. Heady, Taylor Boulevard, was in charge of arrangements and the remains were cremated.
