She was retired from the Putnam County Board of Education with 18 years of service. She was a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney H. Ellis; son, Sidney Bradford Ellis; parents, Everett and Irene Doss Gibson; brothers, Bill and Bob Gibson; sister, Reba Gibson.
Surviving: daughters, Phyllis Bays of Culloden, Patsy Ammoscato and Donna Drewry, both of Hurricane; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Gibson of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Brian Ellis, Murphy and Joyce Goff, Randy and Elzana Giff, John and Denise Ellis, Bobby and Janice Ellis, all of Hurricane; sisters, Emilee Wray of Fraziers Bottom, Bonnie Carter of Circleville, Ohio, Ruby Holman of Orient, Ohio, and Darlene Opdyke of South Bloomfield, Ohio; brothers, John Gibson of Michigan, Roger Gibson of Lesage, and Bernard Gibson of Fraziers Bottom; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, April 15, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

James F. Holderby
James F. “Frank” Holderby, 83, of Hurricane died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Sunbridge of Putnam after a long illness.
He was a retired electrician from Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston, with 33 years of service. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, St. Albans, and a United States Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Washington Masonic Lodge No. 58 AF & AM St. Albans, where he served as past master in 1981, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine Temple and Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 79.
Surviving: wife, Lorena M. Holderby; daughter, Glenna Jean Chambers of Hurricane; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Father Paul Bresnahan officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 405 B Street, St. Albans WV 25177.

Leon Dial
Leon Dial, 85, of Teays Valley died Saturday, April 13, 2002, at his residence after a long illness.
He was retired from Union Carbide Corp., South Charleston, with 35 years of service. He was a charter member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, and a member of Local 598 of International Association of Machinists.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Burgess Dial; brothers, Ruel, Earl and Fred Dial; sisters, Marjorie, Zola and Opal.
Surviving: wife, Lena Adkins Dial; daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Oliver Michels of Chareston, Suzette and Danny Chase of Winfield, and Pamela Adkins of Gallipolis Ferry; sons and daughters-in-law, Harols and Shirley Dian of Charleston, South Carolina and Paul and Daphine Dial of Frederick, Maryland; six nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; two great-grandsons.
Service was held Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Martin Hallett andd the Rev. Frank Frye officiating. Burial was in Dial-Pritchard Cemetery, 4 Mile, Branchland. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 4013 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot WV 25560; or to the Salvation Army, 301 Tennessee Avenue, Charleston WV 25302.

Edward C. Persinger Sr.
Edward Clay Persinger Sr., 77, of Poca died Sunday, April 14, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was a 51-year resident of Poca, retired chief engineer for the Ohio River Company, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Rock Branch Independent Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Persinger.
Surviving: daughters, Jean Lee Roush of Las Vegas, Susie Thomas of Poca and Barbara Saunders of South Charleston; sons, Eddie Persinger Jr. of Cross Lanes, Buddy Persinger of Clarksville, Indiana, and Mike Persinger of Poca; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Windell S. Tincher
Windell S. Tincher, 88, of Hurricane died April 13, 2002, after a short illness.
He was a retired insulator from Union Carbide, as well as a retired farmer. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, Milton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Emily Tincher; parents, Thomas E. and Ada Bell Tincher; sister, Verba Browning; and brothers, Clarence and Herb Tincher.
Surviving: son, Thomas J. Tincher of Milton; daughter, Rose A. Hughes of Charleston; uncle, Herschel Browning of Hurricane; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Lawrence Dailey officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane.

Guy Leslie Hutchison
Guy Leslie Hutchison, of Huntington passed away Saturday, April 13, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Rev. Don Napier. Burial in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Wayne County, W.Va. He was born January 21, 1924, in Huntington, W.Va, a son of the late Anthony Wayne and Gladys Ruth Hancock Hutchison. He was a retired employee of Houdaille Industries and was WW II U.S. Navy veteran and a merchant marine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra Lynn Hutchison; three brothers, Jack, Harold Wayne and Carl Hutchison; and two sisters, Eva Ross and Ruby Marshall. Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Hutchison; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Leslie Napier of Milton, W.Va., and Terry and Aaron Yeager of Barboursville, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Warren McComas of Chesapeake, Ohio, Kelly McComas of Wayne, W.Va., Rebecca Wolford of Huntington and Amy Napier, Jennifer Napier and Jake Napier, all of Milton; six great-grandchildren, Evan Thacker, Michaela Thacker, Gracey Wolford, Raine Rogers and Matthew Napier; three sisters, Mildred Jack and Oneida “Sissy” Frazier, both of Huntington and Barbara Gue of Lavalette, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Boyd Murrel Cooper
Boyd Murrel Cooper, 67, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at home. He was a salesman for Bob Boyd Lincoln-Mercury of Columbus. Survivors include one son, Eddie Cooper of Peachtree, Ga.; one daughter, Veronica Walk of Powell, Ohio; and one brother, Clyde Cooper of Milton. Funeral services were held Friday, April 12, 2002 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Milton.

Helen Margaret Dunbar
Helen Margaret Dunbar, 88, of Huntington died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home in Milton, W.Va. Memorial services were conducted Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member, by the Rev. Gray Hampton. Helen was born July 27, 1913, in Richwood, W.Va., a daughter of the late John Leonard and Mary Agnor Dunbar. She was a graduate of Marshall College, was a retired schoolteacher and taught at Barboursville Junior High School approximately 35 years. She was a member of the WVEA and volunteered with the Red Cross. She also worked for the FBI in Pittsburgh during World War II. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John Dunbar, McClung “Bud” Dunbar and Judge Russell Dunbar. Survivors include her sister, Peggy Wild of Huntington and seven nieces and seven nephews. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the charity of their choice. Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Russell Carter
Raymond Russell Carter, 76, of Lesage, W.Va., passed away Monday, April 8, 2002, in Morris Memorial Nursing Home, Milton, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Doug Spurlock officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, W.Va. VFW Post 9738 conducted Military graveside rites. He was born March 12, 1924, in Huntington, W.Va, a son of the late Frank and Melinda Brown Carter. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Priscilla Porter Carter; his second wife, Lorena L. Carter; a sister, Betty Waugh; and two brothers, Louis Carter and Frank Carter. He was the manager of Carter's Mobile Homes and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9738; and was a member of American Legion Post #16 and BPOE #313. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Gary Conway and Kathi Mize and Marc O'Dell all of Riverside, Calif.; two granddaughters, Kimberly Bentley of Riverside, Calif., and Sarah Mize of Temecula, Calif.; a step-grandson Eric O'Dell of Riverside, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Bentley of Riverside, Calif., and Grason Blair of Temecula, Calif.; a nephew, Ronnie Carter of Lesage, W.Va.; and two nieces, Debbie Lewis and Donna Carter, both of Lesage, W.Va.

Velma Lois Gibson
Velma Lois Gibson, 79, of Barboursville passed away April 10, 2002, at Sunbridge of Putnam. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Rome and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Bob Ray and the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born September 25, 1922, in Hyde County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Hill and Clydia Gibbs Midyette. She was a member of Cyrus Creek Baptist Church and was preceded in death by one son, Larry Ballance. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth D. Gibson; three daughters, Gloria Nanney and Patsy Leary, both of Chesapeake, Virginia and Janice Ireland of North Carolina; one son, Calvin Ballance of Chesapeake, Virginia; two sisters, Sarah Etheridge of North Carolina and Sylvia Hanna of Chesapeake, Virginia; one brother, Daniel Midyette of North Carolina; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth Lambert Pierson French
Ruth Lambert Pierson French passed away April 5, 2002, peacefully in her sleep at the residence of her daughter in Huntington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Leslie French, her parents, Fred B. and Nannie Peyton Lambert, brothers Don W. Lambert, Homer F. Lambert and Charles E. Lambert; sisters, Pearl Hoek Neal, Dexter Harrington, Estelle Hanger and Myrtle Drummond. She is survived by two daughters, Irene Pierson Frazier of Huntington and Patricia Pierson Pugh and husband Greg Pugh of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandsons Neal P. Frazier of Cleveland, Ohio, Paul E. Frazier and wife Leigh of Frisco, Texas, David M. Frazier of Huntington and Christopher T. Hedrick of Virginia Beach Va.; great-grandchildren, Tanuee, Cade and Evan Frazier of Frisco, Texas. Ruth is survived by two sisters, Gladys Dorr of Proctorville, Ohio, and Dolly Byrne of Falston, Md.; one brother, Henry Lambert of Lavalette, W.Va.; many loving nieces and nephews and her very special caregiver, Doris Mayo. Ruth was born in Cabell County on January 24, 1906. She was a graduate of Morris Harvey Academy and Marshall University. She attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Ohio State University. She was a dedicated Cabell County elementary school teacher for 41 years, a 50-year member of the Barboursville chapter of the DAR, an avid bridge player and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Huntington.
The family would like to express it's heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Huntington for their help. Graveside services were held Saturday, April 14, 2002, in the chapel at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. David Erenrich officiating. Henson Mortuary of Barboursville was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, Huntington, WV.

Joyce Ann Payne
Joyce Ann Payne, 64, of Hurricane died March 31, 2002, at CAMC Memorial Division.
Born in Hinton, a daughter of the late Fred and Florence Clark Jones, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Clark Jones, a sister, Pauline Wood, and daughters, Ruth Ann Payne and Alice May.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and was retired from Kroger's of Teays Valley. She was a graduate of Hinton High School.
Surviving: husband, George E. Payne; daughter, Lisa A. Stout of Hilton Head, South Carolina; son, Gregory E. Payne of Cumming, Georgia; sisters, Brenda Oppriecht of Batavia, Illinois and Dorothy Rogers of True, West Virginia; brothers, Dempsey Jones, Aubrey Lee “Casey” Jones and Bobby Jones, all of Alexandria, Kentucky, Donald Jones of Rancho Cordova, California, Eddie Jones of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Ronnie Jones of Waco, Texas, granddaughtrers, Carly Payne and Greylin Payne, both of Cumming, Georgia; aunt, Madeline Keadle of Forest Hill, West Virginia.
Service was held Thursday, April 4, 2002, at First Baptist Church, Hurricane, with Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be sent to First Baptist Church, Main Street, Hurricane WV 25526.

Ruth Tincher Eggleton
Ruth Tincher Eggleton, 85, of Scott Depot, formerly of Wilmington, North Carolina, died April 2, 2002, at Sunbridge of Putnam after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was a licensed practical nurse having worked at Thomas Memorial Hospital, Riverside Nursing Home, and in private duty nursing in Wilmington. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Wilmington.
Surviving: son, Wayne Tincher of Scott Depot; stepdaughter, Sue Ayers of Nashville, Tennessee; sister, Virginia L. Tincher of Rainelle; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. C.T. Bullington officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 1200 Quarrier Street, Charleston WV 25301.

John T. Westfall
John T. “Buddy” Westfall, 72, of Winfield died April 4, 2002, at home after an extended illness.
He was a member of Beach Road Baptist Church in Southport, North Carolina. He had previously been employed at Monsanto and retired with 32 years of service as a local State Farm agent. He was past president of the Young Democrat Clubs of West Viriginia and was appointed to the State Road Advisory Board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse T. “Tom” and Ina E. Hall Westfall; and his sister and brother-in-law, Mabel L. and J. Foster Johnson.
Surviving: wife of 51 years, Loretta M. Halley Westfall; daughters, Linda K. Halliday and husband, David, of Pittsboro, North Carolina, and Cheryl A. Farrington and husband, Bruce, of Winston Salem, North Carolina; son, Larry M. Westfall, and wife, Kathryn, of Winfield; two granddaughters, Lori Farrington and husband, Neil Johnson, and Niki Farrington; two grandsons, Chad Westfall and Nathan Westfall; niece, Betty Jo Johnson; nephews, John F. Johnson Jr. and David Johnson; and a host of family and friends.
Service was held Monday, April 8, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home, Chapel, Poca, with the Rev. Ray Webb of Beach Road Baptist Church. Interment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Memorial donations may be made to Beach Road Baptist Church, Southport NC 28461.

Lester Leo Wallace, 40, of Pliny died April 4, 2002.
Service was held Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Mount Union United Methodist Church, Pliny. Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Pt. Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph W. Racer
Joseph Winter Racer, 51, of Hurricane died April 5, 2002, at CAMC General Division, Charleston, after a short illness.
He was a service representative for the Social Security Administration in Charleston for 30 years and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.He was preceded in death by his parents, White Wood Racer and Ruby Pauline Wood Racer.
Surviving: wife, Valerie J. Racer; daughter, Samantha J. Racer of Hurricane; son, Joseph C. Racer of Hurricane; sisters, Bonnie J. Johnson and Sherry E. Tabor of Hurricane; brother, Wesley C. Racer of Hurricane.
Service was held Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Teays Valley.

Violet Sue Maddox
Violet Sue Maddox, 57, died April 6, 2002, at home after a sudden illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Teays Valley and was retired from Union Carbide, South Charleston.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Scott Jones of Hurricane; sister, Alice Faye Cantrell of Strongsville, Ohio; brothers, Homer D. Maddox and R. Wilford Maddox, both of Teays Valley; grandchildren, Heather Maddox and Hunter Jones, both of Hurricane.
Service was ehld Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Ken Toler officiating. Burial was in Teays Hill Cemetery, St. Albans.

Billie E. Davis
Billie E. Davis, 76, of Midway died April 5, 2002, in CAMC General Division.
He was a retired iron worker, a master Mason, a Navy veteran of World War II and a graduate of Buffalo High School.
Surviving: wife, Marie Davis; daughters, Debra Hanson and Patricia Fenton; brother, Lawrence Davis of Charleston; grandchildren, Maria Slaman and her husband, Brian, Jennifer Gallo Tillis, Bill Fenton II, Tish Fenton, Phillip Fenton; great-grandchildren; Zachary and Adam Slaman; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service was held Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Arles Covert officiating. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Arlie L. “Lou” Fisher, 69 of Scott Depot died April 6, 2002, in CAMC Memorial Division.
She was a member of Scott Depot Christ Fellowship.
