Beverly N. Turley
Beverly N. “Sparkle” Fewell Turley, 53, of South Charleston died June 18, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, D.M. and Isabelle Fewell, stepmother, Ruby Morris Fewell, and brother, Mike Fewell.
Surviving: husband, Carless; daughter, Christie Thompson and husband, Jamie, of Sod; special grandson, Tyler Thompson; brother, Richard “Bud” Fewell and wife, Sandy, of Hawaii; stepbrother, Jim Morris and wife, Donnie, of Nitro; special friend, Dennie Brunetti of South Charleston.
Service was held Friday, June 21, 2002, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Charles Larue officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.
Maria Davis
Marie Davis, 73, of Red House died June 19 2002, in CAMC General Hospital.
Mrs. Davis was the former owner of Maria’s restaurant and lounge in Teays Valley and she was a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billie E. Davis.
Surviving: daughters and son-in-law, Deborah Hanson of St. Albans and Patricia and Bill Fenton of Eleanor; grandchildren, Maria and Brian Slaman, Jennifer Gallo Tillis, Bill Fenton II, Tish Fenton, and Phillip Fenton; great-grandchildren, Zachary Slaman and Adam Slaman.
Service was held Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. Entombment was in the memorial gardens. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Goldie M. Forren
Goldie Margaret Forren, 89, of Scott Depot, formerly of South Charleston, died June 18, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston, and a homemaker.
Surviving: daughters, Dolly Netcher of Scott Depot and Debra Jeffries of Dayton, Ohio; stepdaughter, Jane Means of South Charleston; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Thursday, June 20, 2002, in Glendale Cemetery, South Charleston, with the Rev. George Bendall of Teays Valley Presbyterian Church officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Maxine Carpenter Roth
Maxine Carpenter Roth of Flagstaff, Arizona, formerly of Hurricane, passed away.
Surviving: husband, Eldon Roth.

Donna M. Waugh
Donna Marie Waugh, 53, of Winfield died Tuesday, June 18, 2002, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, after a sudden illness.
She was employed by State Farm Insurance Company, Eleanor. She was a 32-year resident of Winfield.
Surviving: son, Donnie L. Waugh, Jr. of St. Albans; sisters, Frances LaRicci of Joppa, Maryland, Patricia Dean of Pinellas Park, Florida, Iris Giles of Gallagher, and Glenna Jones of Pinellas Park; brother, Charles Workman of Pratt.
Memorial service was held Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Richard Work officiating.
Wilma Hazlett
Wilma Meeks Hazlett, 79, of Winfield died June 23, 2002 at home.
She was a member of Winfield Baptist Church and Extension Homemakers. She was a lifelong resident of Winfield.
Surviving: husband, Russell F. Hazlett; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Dan Walker of Scott Depot; son and daughter-in-law, Danny Franklin and Sharon Hazlett of Albemarle, North Carolina; sister, Muriel Meeks of Charleston; brother, Ivan Meeks Jr. of Winfield; grandchildren and their spouses, Angie and Brent Bostic of Hurricane, Jason and Betsy Hazlett and Andrew Hazlett, all of Albemarle; special neighbor children, Mark, Andy and Rebekah Greene of Winfield.

Mary P. Garrison, 74, of Scott Depot, formerly of Buffalo, died June 23, 2002.

Pauline Martin
Pauline Martin, 82, of Hurricane died June 22, 2002, at home.
She was a US Government census clerk. She was a graduate of Keokuk (Iowa) High School and attended Illinois State Teachers College. She was a past worthy matron with the Eastern Star in Jeffersonville, Indiana. She was also an organist at various churches.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Wilbur Martin.
Surviving daughter, Mrs. Robert Peirce of Beverly Hills, California; sons, John Martin of Memphis, Indiana, Thomas Martin of Hurricane, Charles Martin of Troutwood, Ohio, and James Martin of Borden, Indiana; sisters, Mildren Trumbo of Spokane, Washington, Geraldine Wagoner of Louisville, Kentucky, and Gail Allen of Mesa Arizona; brother, Edgar McCracken of Las Vegas; seven grandchuildren; six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.
Rev. William V. Perrine
Rev. William Virgil “Dean” Perrine, 79, of Hurricane died June 22, 2002, at home.
He was a member of Scary Freewill Baptist Church. He was retired from Union Carbide with 42 years’ service. He delivered flowers for Teays Valley Floral for 15 years and was a World War II United States Army veteran. He was a Master Mason, a HAM radio operator and former pastor of Garrison Avenue Freewill Baptist Church, Scary Freewill Baptist Church and Coal River Freewill Baptist Church. He was a 42-year resident of Hurricane.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bleva Fields Perrine.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Leslie Long of Hurricane; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Vida Perrine of Ravenswood, Rick and Aly Rhodes of Columbus, Ohio; granddaughters and their husband, Traci and Darren Bird, Kristyn and Sean Piercefield, and Morgan Perrine; great-granddaughter, Sarah Marie Bird.
Service was held Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Hurricane. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
John L Kelley
John L. Kelley, 86, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 22 in St Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 24 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Balls Gap Cemetery, Milton. He was born August 23, 1915, in Hamlin, W.Va, a son of the late Samuel J. and Maude T. Kelley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathern Kelley; his son, Jarrell “Don” Kelley; three brothers, Dr. C.H. Kelley, Rev. C.L. Kelley, and George Kelley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a legionnaire member. He is survived by two brothers, Roy F. Kelley of Baltimore Md, and Elwood L. Kelley of Idaho; three sisters, Velma Hicks of Milton, Annajean Kelley of Parker, Ariz, and Betty Lusher of Florida; four grandchildren, Donnie and Deborah Kelly of Huntington, Teresa and Danny Vickers of Milton, Anthony Kelly of Milton, and Debbie and Garland Bills Jr, of Chesapeake; and ten great-grandchildren.
Mary Catherine Haggerty Batey
Mary Catherine Haggerty Batey, 50, of Milton died Friday at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio. She was a teacher for the Mason County School System. Survivors include her father, James “Sonny” Haggerty; three sons, Tyler, Casey and Kevin Batey of Milton; three sisters, Connie Roush of West Columbia, W.Va., Cindy Ray and Carla Leadman, both of Milton; and one brother, Curry Haggerty of Milton. Graveside services 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Forest Memorial Park, Milton. There was no visitation. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.
Steve Hammond
Steve Hammond, 74, of Wayne, passed away June 22, 20O2 at St Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 24, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Heron Adkins. Burial in Brinegar Cemetery, Raccoonville Creek Road, Branchland. He was born October 30, 1927, in Branchland, a son of the late Sherman and Rozella Brinegar Hammond. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty and two sisters, Sharon Lynn Hammond and Deanna Adkins. He is survived by seven sisters, Rosalee Adkins of Wayne, Millie Hammond and Pamela Dillman, both of Huntington, Gracie Adkins of Branchland, Verna Johnson of Detroit, Thelma Eaves of Mason County, and Spicie Ferrell of Breeden; four brothers, Sherman Leo Hammond of Huntington, Braxton Hammond of Detroit, Paris Hammond of Branchland, and Lawrence Hammond of Wayne; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Vernon J. Holland, 71, of Lesage, husband of Edna Hill Holland, died Sunday at home. He was retired from Connors Steel. Also surviving are two daughters, Joanne Holland of Denver, Colo., and Linda Hager of Springfield, Ohio; one son, Brian Holland of Lesage; and one sister, Juanita Fife of Huntington. Helen Mae Whitmore
Helen Mae Whitemore, 84, of Lesage, widow of the Rev. Earl Austin Whitmore Sr., died Saturday in St. Mary’s Hospital. Survivors include one son, Earl Austin Whitmore Jr. of Huntington; three daughters, Betty Conkel of Ashville, Ohio, Linda Holley of Lesage and Mary Ullom of Huntington; and one sister, Alta Crawford of Barboursville. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington; burial in Greenbottom Memorial Park.
Candace Marie Gue
Candace Marie Gue, 16, of Salt Rock W.Va, went to be with the Lord Monday, June 17, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 21, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev Robert Adkins, the Rev. James Jobe and the Rev. Richard Jobe. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. She was born September 2, 1985. in Huntington, a daughter of Steven and Virginia Campbell Gue of Salt Rock. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, a talented softball player, was Captain of the Barboursville Middle School Basketball Team and was selected to play in the All-County Band. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Claude Campbell Jr. Also surviving are her brother, Wesley Gue of Salt Rock; paternal grandparents, Gene and Donna Jobe Gue of Salt Rock; paternal great-grandmother, Pauline Gue of Huntington; maternal grandmother, Bonnie Lizotte of Tennessee; uncle and aunt, Mike and Kathy Gue of Salt Rock, and their children, Alex Gue and Todd Gue and his wife Jenny Pennington Gue; uncle and aunt Dennis and Wanda Campbell and their children Aaron Campbell and Jason Campbell and his wife Shasta Campbell; aunt and uncle Debbie and Carl Legg of Ona; several great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins and friends.

Woody Allen Merritte, 33, of Branchland, W.Va, died Tuesday, June 18, 20O2. He was born February 1, 1969, in Huntington, W.Va, a son of Woodrow and Linda Sue Pritchard Merritte of Branchland, W.Va. He was an employee of Adams Trucking Company. He is also survived by his wife, Sinda Rebecca Merritte; two sons, Nathanael and Zachary Merritte, both at home; a brother, Michael Merritte of Branchland; a sister, Elisa Clay of Branchland and grandparents, Clifford and Ruth Pritchard of Branchland. George Walden Adkins, 73, of Branchland, W.Va, passed away June 16, 2002. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Salem United Baptist Church by the Rev. Carlos Gibson and the Rev. Larry Perry. Burial in Adkins Cemetery, Steer Branch Road, Branchland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Goba and Cassie Lucas Adkins, and one uncle, Raynor Lucas. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Crum Adkins; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Donna Adkins, Eugene and Dorothy Lafferty, and Gregory and Lori Lafferty; three daughters, Karen, Sandy and Mary; one sister and her husband, Minnie and Cleston Ramey; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephew and nieces; one aunt and her husband, Delma and Frank Moore; and numerous cousins and a host of friends. Also surviving are paternal grandparents, Paul and Dollie Cazad of South Point, Ohio; maternal grandfather, Philip Johnson of Footsville, Wisconsin; paternal great-grandmother, Elder Mae Holley of Huntington; maternal great-grandmothers, Maxine Johnson of Footsville and Charlotte Clever of Three Rivers, Michigan; three sisters, Ashley Mays, Breanna and CaSaundra Cazad; and one brother, Daniel Cazad.
Anna Akers
Anna “Annie” Wroten Akers, 93, formerly of Hurricane, died June 9, 2002, at SunBridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Dunbar, after a 14-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Annie was born December 12, 1908 in Barboursville, a daughter of the late John W. and Dora Simmons Wroten. She was the widow of Charles “Charlie” Akers. She was also preceded in death by her son, Lenford “Jiggs” Wroten, daughter-in-law, Goldene Akers; brothers, Ernest, Johnny, Murrell, Fred, Shirley, Noah and Frank; and sisters, Mary Algoe and Marie Wroten.
She worked at the Goodyear Rubber Plant, Akron, Ohio, for many years. She and Charlie were active members of the Sousanah Freewill Baptist Church, Culloden, until both of their illness.
Surviving: son, Bernard Akers and wife Hazel of Bishop, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Elsie Woodard Wroten of St. Albans; grandchildren, Jack Akers, Margaret Snell, Debby Cole, Sherry Taylor, Ethel Ward, Charlie Akers, and Jenny Angle; 15 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Service was held June 12, 2002 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Caudle Adkins officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Carl L. Long Sr.
Carl L. Long Sr., 84, of Liberty died June 8, 2002 at home following a long illness.
He was a retired painter from AVTEX with 34 years’ service, a minister for 40 years in various area churches, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a lifelong resident of Liberty.
Surviving: wife, Dorothy Maser Long; daughters, Janet Harrison, Charlotte Faber, Patty Witt and Bonnie Postlethwait, all of Liberty; son, Carl Long Jr. of Liberty; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held June 12, 2002 at Barnett Chapel Church, Liberty, with the Rev. Pete Cobb and the Rev. Nyle Fisher officiating. Burial was in Jeffers family Cemetery, Liberty. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
Ada Marie Hicks
Ada Marie Hicks, 84, of Hurricane died June 12, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a Protestant.
Surviving: brother, Ernie Hinkley and wife Mildred of Culloden; nephew, Michael Hinkley of Hurricane; nieces, Connie and Bonnie Gower of Colorado, Beverly Dickerson of Kentucky, Susan Hinkley and Stephanie Stone of Maryland.
Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
