Howard “Tom” Stover
Howard “Tom” Stover, 80, of 18 Mile Creek Road, Buffalo, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Thomas Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was a retired construction laborer, a member of Laborers Union, Charleston Local 1353, a member of the Buffalo Senior Citizens, a member and trustee of the Turkey Branch Church, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a lifelong resident of Buffalo.
Surviving: wife, Martha A. Parsons Stover; sons, Gary Stover and his wife Marie of Detroit, Michigan and Tommy Stover and his wife, Karen of Buffalo; daughters, Dola Hill of Poca, Sandra Stover Jones and her husband Larry of Buffalo, and Marcie Stover Jividen and her husband Jason of DeKalb, Illinois; brothers, Bob K. Stover of Buffalo and Jerry Stover of Nitro; sisters, Josephine Williams and Ruth Bea Jividen, both of Eleanor, Lorena Rogers of Baltimore, Ohio, and Joan Ann Smith of Buffalo; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, June 7, 2002, at the Turkey Branch Church with the Rev. Mike Tucker and the Rev. Pete Cobb officiating. Burial was in Given Cemetery. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. John W. Hogan
Dr. John W. Hogan, 66, of Hurricane died June 5, 2002, at Thomas Memorial Hosapital after a short illness.
Dr. Hogan was a retired math professor from Marshall University with 29 years of service. He was former chairman of the Marshall University Math Department, member of the American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America and the West Virginia Academy of Science. Dr. Hogan earned his AB degree in 1957 from Berea College, his M.S. degree from the Unviersity of Wisconsin at Madison in 1959, and his Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1969.
Surviving: wife, Geneva M Hogan; children, Vera Standish and Gayle Allsion, both of Hurricane, Rae Anne Blair of Shinnston and Lee Hogan of Kanawha County; stepchildren, Eric Brian Jones of Charleston and Melissa Davis of Orlando, Florida; sisters, Leah Kincaid of Minooka, Illinois, Elsie Hite of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Marie Harris of Clarksburg, and Elaine Valentine of Elkins; brother, Edsel Hogan of Franklin; grandchildren, Amanda Standish, Ashley Standish, Leigh Anne Allison, and William Wesley Allison; stepgrandchildren, Carrie Morison, Rivkah Balir, and Daniel Blair; stepgreat-grandson, Shaun Patrick Morrison; many nieces and nephews.
Service was held Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Tomblyn Funeral Home, Elkins, Burial was in Hevener Cemetery, Monterville. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of local arrangements. The family suggests donations be made to The Marshall University Foundation Inc., c/o John W. Hogan Memorial Scholarship, 1 John Marshall Drive, Huntington WV 25755, Attn: Carolyn Hunter.

Thelma H. Comstock
Thelma Hazel Comstock, 98, of Hurricane, formerly of Nitro, died June 6, 2002, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was the former owner of Comstock Furniture in Nitro and a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane.
Surviving: sons, David W. Comstock of Hurricane, Fredrick H. Comstock of Sun City, California, and Earl R. Comstock Jr. of Long Beach, California; sisters, Monna of Kenner, Louisiana, Neva of Sissonville, and Gene of Newton, Pennsylvania; brother, J.C. Brown of Winter Gardens, Florida; 14 grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with Jim McGhee and the Rev. Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating.

Margaret E. Wiant
Margaret Ella Wiant, 80, of Winfield died June 7, 2002.
She was born January 14, 1922 in Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio at a young age with her family. She married and raised four children. She relocated to West Virginia from Akron upon the death of her husband, Charles Wiant. She retired from the State of West Virginia, Surplus Property, Dunbar after 10 years of service.
Surviving: daughter, Karen Sylvester of Winfield; sons, Mark Wiant and his wife Karen of St. Albans, Roy Wiant and Diane Wiant of Ohio, and Michael Wiant and his wife Evelyn of Ohio; grandchildren, Brian Sylvester and his fiancee, Johanna Lederman of Long Island, New York, Craig and Ann Sylvester of Monterey, California, Brenda Sylvester of Morgantown, Eric and Robin Sylvester of Hurricane, Selena Wiant of Saginaw, Michigan, and Charles Wiant of St. Albans; great-granddaughters, Catherine Sylvester of Monterey, Claifornia and Hanna Pratt of Saginaw, Michigan.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 10, 2002, at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, with the Rev. Joel M. Harpold officiating. The family sugests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064, or the American Lung Association of West Virginia, 415 Dickinson Street, Charleston WV.

Marian Sturm Fisher
Marian Sturm Fisher, 93, passed away May 24 20O2 at Regency Park. Born on October 20, 1908, the daughter of Francis Marion and Laura Ellen Howell Sturm, the widow of Simon J. Fisher, and the mother of Patricia L. Doss of Huntington, Barbara B. Camp of Barboursville, Samuel S. Fisher of Charlottesville, Va., and Frances M. Edwards of Slidell, La; and had 15 grandchildren 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She graduated from Huntington High School and Marshall College and taught in Cabell County schools. She was the oldest living member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, where a memorial service was held Sunday, June 9. Donations may be sent to Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.

Wilson Marion Wooten
Wilson Marion Wooten, 84, of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center. Graveside services were conducted Monday, June 10, 2002 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery, Route 34, Hurricane. He was born Sept I1, 1917, in Hurricane, a son of the late Anthony and Rachel Lowe Wooten. He was a member of Wire Branch Freewill Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by one son, Wesley Wooten. He is survived by his wife, Pansy Hinkle Wooten; five daughters, Jean Chaney of Salt Rock, Shirley Newsome of Hurricane, Janet Barnett of Huntington and Patricia Reynolds and Teresa Tew, both of North Carolina; five sons, Jimmy Wooten of Milton, Raymond Wooten of Kansas, Roger Wooten of Hurricane, Minister Darrell Wooten of Salt Rock and David Wooten of Culloden; one sister, Ruby Crosen of Hurricane; two brothers, Maxie Wooten of Milton and Carl Wooten of Hurricane; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was no visitation. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Herbert M. Scites
Mr. Herbert M. Scites, 73 of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Lincoln Continuous Care, Hamlin, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, June 9, 2002 at Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church by Pastor Jeff Sizemore. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Christus Chapel. He was born July 10, 1928, in Hubbell W.Va., a son of the late Robert W. and Dora Adkins Scites. He was a member of Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and song leader. He worked for Davis Wholesale, Martha White and for Mears' Brokerage. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Allen Scites, three brothers, Kenneth Scites, Jack Scites and Johnny Scites, and two sisters, Virginia Scites and Judy Bell. He is survived by his wife, Leta McComas Scites; two daughters, Sandra Drown of Barboursville and Beverly A. Miller of Hurricane; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul David and Sharolyn Scites of Ona; six sisters, Sharon Prichard of Barboursville, Patsy Johnson of Salt Rock Emma Joyce Henry of Paris, Ill., Vivian Cabell of Beaufort, S.C., Lorraine Franklin of Williston, Fla., and Betty Adkins of Cincinnati Ohio; two brothers, Pat Ray Scites of Carroll, Ohio, and Robert Scites of Xenia, Ohio; two grandchildren, Chad Black and Leslie Drown, both of Barboursville; and a host of friends. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bloomingdale-Salem Baptist Church Building Fund. The family would like to give a special thanks to everyone at Lincoln Continuous Care Nursing Home for their help and care.

Ezra Rayburn Jr.
Ezra Rayburn Jr., 81, of Barboursville, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Cyrus Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Clyde Cazad and the Rev. Bob Ray. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born March 14, 1921, in Cabell County, WV, son of the late Ezra Rayburn Sr., and Bertha Ellen Daniels Rayburn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Irene Rayburn in 1989. He was a bricklayer of H.K. Porter Steel. Survivors include two daughters, Velma Rayburn and Linda Rayburn, both at home; and one sister, Lorraine Adams of Columbus, Ohio. Henson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Erman Sansom
Erman Sansom, 66, of Salt Rock, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor David Cardwell and the Rev. William Hughes Jr. Burial in Enon Cemetery. He was born December 13, 1935, in Wayne County, son of the late Rev. Edgar and Ona Lester Sansom. He was a member of Center Point Baptist Church of West Hamlin. He was a retired employee of Huntington Plating and was owner of Sansom's Body Shop in Salt Rock. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucella Jobe and Janice Gibson, and two brothers, Hiram and Enslow Sansom. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Brunty Sansom; six sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Debbie Sansom and Ronnie Sansom, all of Salt Rock, Terry and Tanya Sansom of Olive Hill, Ky., Scott and Kimm Sansom of Orlando, Fla., Brett and Morena Sansom of Salt Rock and Brent and Karen Sansom of Barboursville; one sister, Lucille Nelson of Salt Rock; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Truman and Margaret Sansom of Salt Rock and Ernie and Ouida Sansom of Barboursville; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Jessie Brunty Cessna of Salt Rock; sisters-in-law, Brenda Lee of North Carolina, Gerri Mills and her husband, Ron of Salt Rock, and Betty Rardain of Pensacola, Fla.; brother-in-law Micky Brunty and his wife Sharon of Lodi, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Emogene Dolin Jones
Emogene Dolin Jones, 88, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 3, 2002. Funeral services were be Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Tom Young officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born May 23, 1914, in Arden W.Va., a daughter of the late Bernie Hazelett and Gertie Hazelett Newman. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Clifton Dolin and her second husband, Chalmer Jones; two daughters, Mrs. Jane Davis, Mrs. Lois Hagan; one son, David Dolin and one grandson, Steve Ward. She was former owner and operator of Jones' Restaurant and an active member of the Milton community. She was a longtime employee of Morris Memorial Crippled Children's Hospital and a member of the Milton Baptist Church. She was an avid herb gardener. She is survived by two daughters, Sue and her husband Doug Ward of St. Albans, June and her husband John Bradbury of Culloden; one son, Bill and his wife Lois Dolin of Huntington; one sister, Mrs. Glenna Adkins of Huntington; 12 grandchildren, Melinda Wills, Lisa Anness, Paul Davis, Chris Davis, Joy Kamakowiwoole, Jana Hagan, Tina Ellison, Tricia Knapp, Carrie Dolin, Danielle Bane, Monica Adkins and Jimmy Bradbury; and nine great grandchildren. Pallbearers were the grandsons and honorary pall bearers were the great-grandsons. The family wishes to express their the appreciation to their mother's wonderful caregivers who lovingly cared for her during her extended illness. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Emily Gail Edmonds
Emily Gail Edmonds, 24, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away Monday, June 3, 2002, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Minister Jack R. Capehart officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born September 23, 1977, in West Hamlin, W.Va., a daughter of Linda Edmonds Capehart and Jack R. Capehart of Barboursville, W.Va., and the late William Blair Edmonds. She worked in retail sales. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Blair Edmonds II; maternal grandmother Ruby Mavis Toppins; and paternal grandfather, Lawrence Edmonds. Survivors include a son, Emory Liam Edmonds-Leaseburge of Huntington; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Elisa L. and Keith Cremeans of Salt Rock, W.Va., and Beverly D. Swann of Huntington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bradford C. and Cindy Edmonds of Wilmington, N.C., and Ronald E. and Sharon Capehart of Huntington; maternal grandfather, Ray Toppins of Harts, W.Va.; paternal grandmother, Ella Edmonds of Barboursville; nephew Brandon L. Cremeans of Salt Rock and niece, Miranda Capehart of Huntington.

Harry “Rondal” Jenkins
Harry “Rondal” Jenkins, 72, of Lesage, W.Va. husband of Daisy Cremeans Jenkins, went to be with the Lord Sunday, June 2, 2002, in St. Mary's Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington with the Rev. Franklin Edmonds and the Rev. Don Reynolds officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born March 27, 1930, in Milton, W.Va, a son of Melcie Black Jenkins Edmonds of Glenwood, W.Va, and the late Delbert Jenkins. He was a retired shill metal worker with Ensign Electric and had been a member of Little Dove United Baptist Church in Chandler, Fla. He was also preceded in death by a sister, two brothers and twin daughters in 1953. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a stepfather, Charles Edmonds of Glenwood, W.Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry M. and Deborah F. Jenkins, of Lesage; a sister, Wanda Mae Erwin of Grayson, Ky; a brother, Billy Don Edmonds of Elgin, Ill.; two grandchildren, Terry M. Jenkins II, and spouse Karmel Jenkins, and Tracie Michelle Jenkins; three great-grandchildren, Kinslee, Sydnee and Caleb; and a special cousin, the Rev. Franklin Edmonds.

Beulah J. Bird
Beulah Jane Edwards Bird, 79, of Hurricane died May 25, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
Born March 2, 1923 in Kanawha County, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Lelia Bird Edwards. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Rosetta Thornton and Audrey Purdy, and brother, Woodrow Edwards.
Beulah and her late husband, Elmer Bird, the “Banjo Man from Turkey Creek,” traveled the countryside with his music.
She was a homemaker and a quilter.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Jane Bird and David Irwin of Milton; sons and daughters-in-law, Robin and Conna Bird of Hurricane and Craig and Janet Bird of Hurricane; sisters, Reba Bird of Hurricane and Doris Kelly of Lerona; brothers, Kermit Edwards of St. Albans, Clay Edwards of Scott Depot and Ray Edwards of Hurricane; grandchildren, Kevin and Stacie Irwin, Andrew and Missy Irwin, Amanda Oxley, Brandy Bird, Chris Bird, and Chad Bird; great-grandchildren, Justin Bird, Brittany Irwin, Meghan Irwin, Faith Irwin, and Allison Oxley.
Service was held Tuesday, Mary 28th, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with elders Veldon Lynn and Willard Bird officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Church Cemetery, Turkey Creek, Hurricane.

Cynthia M. Cochran
Cynthia Marie “Cindy” Cochran, 35, of Hometown died May 24, 2002 at home.
She was a six-year resident of Hometown and a lifelong resident of Putnam County. She was a certified nursing assistant and attended Scott Depot Christ Fellowship.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Timothy Burke.
Surviving: husband, Roger “Rod” Cochran; children, Cory Zagst at home and Andrea Cowan of Buffalo; stepchildren, Flint and Joni Cochran, both of Hometown; mother, Ruth Keliher of Winfield; father, Robert Keliher of California; sisters, Julia Burke of Michigan, Patricia Lucas of Pliny and Sandra Harris of Charleston; brother, David Keliher of St. Albans; very special friend, Julia Chandler.
Service was held Tuesday, May 28th, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Hanley L. Long
Hanley L. Long, 78, of Hurricane died May 24, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital, after a short illness.
He was a retired iron worker of the Union Local 301 of Charleston.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Leslie L. and Sherry Long of Hurricane; sister, Georgia Glenn of Winfield; granddaughters, Traci Bird of Charlotte and Kristyn Piercefield of Columbus; great-granddaughter, Sarah Marie Bird of Charlotte.
Service was held Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Allen Funeral Home Chapel, Hurricane, with the Rev. Clifford Wilcoxen and the Rev. William Perrine officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Teays Valley.

Carrie F. Cummings
Carrie F. Sowards Cummings, 83, of Hurricane died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her residence.
She was co-founder and owner of Cummings Collection Service, Hurricane, a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 116, Hurricane, and a member of VFW Auxiliary, Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest F. Cummings, and son, Ernest F. Cummings II.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. “Bob” and Betty Cummings of Hurricane; brother, Charles W. Sowards of Hurricane; grandsons, Ernest Paul and Jason Leon Cummings; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Sunday, May 26, 2002, at First Baptist Church with Mr. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations are requested to First Baptist Church, 2635 Main Street, Hurricane WV 25526, or Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
