Dewey Allen Ball
Dewey Allen Ball, 45, of Poca died July 14, 2002, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a graduate of Poca High School, attended Elizabeth Baptist Church, Bancroft, and was a former member of the Nitro Moose and a disabled carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Ball.
Surviving: mother, Patricia Ball of Red House; wife, Catherine of Madison; son, Henry at home; sisters and brothers-in-law, Debi and Tim McCoy of Bancroft, Becky and Jim Holston of Red House, Reba and Bill Smith of Eleanor; nephews, Jim and David Holston, Michael and Jason Smith, and Kevin McCoy; niece, Chelsea McCoy; extended family and friends.
Service was held Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest memorial Gardens, Red House. The family suggests donations be made to Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, in the name of Dewey Allen Ball.
Edward A. Reynolds Jr.
Edward A. Reynolds Jr., 39, of Hurricane died July 13, 2002, of injuries received in an automobile accident.
He was formerly of Marietta, Ohio and Monroe, Michigan.
Surviving: sons, Mike Reynolds of Erie, Michigan, and Justin Reynolds of Hurricane; daughter, Tabitha Reynolds of Hurricane; mother and father, Janice and Edward Reynolds of Erie, Michigan; brother, Jerry Reynolds of Monroe, Michigan; girlfriend, Sherri Bird of Hurricane.
Service was held Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Leslie Pearl Wood
Leslie Pearl “L.P.” Wood, 84, of Hurricane died July 15, 2002, at his home.
He was born January 13, 1918 in Putnam County, a son of the late J.B. and Edna Holcomb Wood. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Reba Thacker Wood.
He was retired from Union Carbide with 42 years of service.
Surviving: sons, Buddy Wood of Abingdon, Virginia and Don Wood of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, June Polk of Pliny, Ruth Hall of Bardstown, Kentucky, and Rena Proudfoot of Culloden; brothers, his twin, J.E. Wood, Al Wood and Chester Wood; sisters, Reba Barrett, Kathy Shrout, Jan Vosper and Janet Hamrick; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Mount Olive Independent Baptist Church with Minister Walt Andrews officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.
Jeffrey Dale Collins
Jeffrey Dale Collins, 22, of Hurricane died July 16, 2002.
He was employed at Millenium Teleservices in Pomeroy, Ohio. He was a 1999 graduate of Hurricane High School and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: parents, John and Linda K. Collins of Hurricane; sister, Jamie Kay Collins of Hurricane; brother, Johnny Collins of Hurricane; paternal grandparents, Harvey H. and Wanda Collins of Nitro.
Service was held Friday, July 19, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Rob Laukoter and the Rev. Clifford Wilcoxen officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Edith M. Bright
Edith M. Bright, 82, of Winfield died July 17, 2002, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Winfield Baptist Church, a volunteer for Putnam County Red Cross and a lifelong resident of Winfield.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Fat” Bright and a son, Glenn R. Bright.
Surviving: sons, Kenneth M. Bright of Winfield and Lee Bright of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren, Glennette R. Beach of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Kelli Bright of Winfield, and Randy Bright of Red House; great-grandchildren, Randi Beach, Amy Beach and Braeden Hammar.
Service was held Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, with Dr. Rodney Taylor of Scott Depot Christ Fellowship officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Alva E. Withrow
Alva E. Withrow, 92, of Red House died July 17, 2002, in SunBridge Nursing Center, Hurricane.
He was an 18-year resident of Red House, a former resident of Mansfield, Ohio, He retired from Borg-Warner in Mansfield, a former employee of Monsanto, a former coal miner and a former employee of Kelly Axe factory.
Surviving: son, Eugene Withrow of Mansfield, Ohio; sisters, Garnett “Babe” Witt of Poca and Iris Boggess of Red House; brothers, Retsel Withrow of Charleston and Garland Withrow of Melbourne, Florida.
Service was held Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca. Burial was in Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg.
Paul M. Cobb
Paul M. Cobb, 85, of Huntington, passed away Friday, July 19, in SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Putnam Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 22, at 1 p.m. at Beard Mortuary by Rev. Caudil Adkins and Rev. Gordon Rutherford. Burial followed at Beale Cemetery, Ashton, WV. He was born March 5, 1917, in Mason County, W.Va., the son of the late Howard and Mary Frances Shively Cobb. He retired as a mill wright mechanic for West Virginia Steel and was a member of Central Freewill Baptist Church. Also preceding him in death was his loving wife, Hazel N. Kirk Cobb. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Monna Cobb Smith and David Smith of Lesage; a son, Paul R. Cobb of Huntington; a granddaughter, Brooke Kiser and husband Eric Kiser of Lesage; two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Eli Kiser; and three sisters, Ester Walker and husband Lee Walker of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., Leota Call of Gallipolis, Ohio, and Eleanor Cobb of Florida. Willard L. Freeman
Willard L. Freeman, 84, of Ona, went to his heavenly home July 17, 2002, from Cabell Huntington Hospital. Services were held Monday, July 22, 2002 at Chapman’s Mortuary, with Rev. Buddie Mills and Rev. Simon Morrison officiating. Burial at White Chapel. He was born December 28, 1917, in Ona, a son of the late James and Rachal Shultz Freeman. He was a member of the Mount Union Baptist Church and served as a trustee. He was retired from ACF Industries. He was preceded in death by one son, Denver “Chuck” Freeman; three brothers, Morton, Glen and Ralph Freeman; and two sisters, Ivy Stevens and Audrey Nowlin. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Freeman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Larry Estep and Vickie and Matt Sigman; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Ed and Sharon Freeman, Steve and Helen Freeman, Don Freeman and companion Ruth Ann Wyant and Connie Freeman; one sister, Maye Nowlin; one sister-in-law, Opal Argabrite; two brothers-in-law, Arie Davis and Nile Nowlin; ten grandchildren, Tammy and spouse Eric Wintz, Brian and spouse Rhonda Freeman, Chad and spouse Melody Freeman, Nikki Freeman, Brad Estep and fiancee Rhonda Gore, Cyndi Estep, Steven and Zach Freeman and Brooke and Brice Gibson; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Kristyn Wintz and Braxton Freeman. Pauline Jarrell, 81, of Barboursville passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Mariner Health Care. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel Barboursville by Pastor Bob Ray and Brother Ron Scarberry. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born March 1, 1921, in Nicholas County, a daughter of the late Wilbert and Alta Miller Halstead. She was also a member of Cyrus Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Jarrell She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Spears of Huntington; one son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Sandra Jarrell of Salt Rock; one sister and brother-in-law, June and Dr. Taylor Turner of Monroe, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Charlotte Halstead of Tennessee; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mack McCallister Terry Jr.
Mack McCallister Terry Jr., 57, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 17, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 20, 2002, at Antioch Baptist Church, Ona, with the Pastor Bill Davis, Minister Pete Davidson and the Rev. Kim Stone officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born December 24, 1944, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Mack McCallister Terry Sr. and Myrtle Black Terry of Milton. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 139, Milton and of the VFW Post 9796, Milton. Mack was an employee of American Electric Power. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Yvonne Hatfield Terry; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Misti McClellan Terry; seven brothers, Harold C. Terry of Augusta, Georgia, Larry D. Terry of Milton, David L. Terry of Ona, John R. Terry of Milton, Wayne Allan Terry of Culloden, Mark D. Terry of Ashland, Ky., and Dallas Edward Terry of Milton; one sister, Patricia Arlene Welch of Milton; two very special grandchildren, Tabatha and Michaela; two special nieces, Pamela Cooper and Teresa Carver; and one aunt, Peggy Lemons of Beckley. Ivan Franklin Bledsoe, 65, of Barboursville, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 19, 2002, at the Wallace Home and Chapel by the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. He was born on April 3, 1937, in Barboursville, a son of the late Bert and Elizabeth Estep Bledsoe. He was a retired employee of Turman Construction. He is survived by his wife, Collette J. Fuller Bledsoe; three sisters, Mildred Liederman of Hanahan, S.C, Doris Gilkerson of Smithers, W.Va., and Margie Racer of Indianapolis, Ind.; three brothers, Jerry Bledsoe, David Bledsoe and Bob Bledsoe, all of Barboursville. Kim Stone officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born March 22, 1947, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of Emzy and Myrtle Chapman of Milton. He is also survived by his wife, Bonnie Chapman; three stepsons, Charles Dowdy and Donald Dowdy, both of Virginia, and Alva Dowdy of Florida; one stepdaughter, Dana Dowdy of Virginia; and one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn K. and David Scarberry of Ona.
Oza Albert Keenan
Oza Albert Keenan, 84, of Salt Rock passed away on July 16, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 19, 2002, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Russell Donahue and the Rev. Jimmy Lester. Burial in Enon Cemetery. He was born on March 10, 1918, in Cabell County, a son of the late Albert and Nora Morrison Keenan. He retired from the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Allen Keenan; two brothers, Everett Pete Keenan and Sylvan Keenan. He is survived by his wife, Violet Bailey Keenan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Kelsey Elkins and Priscilla and Phillip Laney, all of Salt Rock; one son, Lonnie Caroll Keenan of Barboursville; seven sisters, Oma Rolfe, Wanda Lewis, Wanita Wetherholt, Francis Lawson, Eltha Venoy, Eloise Smith and Marlene Collins; three brothers, Dana, Darrell and Froud Keenan; grandchildren, Lonnie Dale Keenean, James Anthony Keenan, Cassandra McCoy, Kelsey Ray Elkins II, Ladoska Sheree Yeager, Brandon Elson Savage and Sarah Nicole Smith; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Dale Keenan, Ethan Tyler McCoy, Alexandra Clemins and Daykota Matthew Savage. Harold “Buddy” Dolen
Harold “Buddy” Dolen, 76, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Joe Dolen. Burial in Dolen Family Cemetery. He was born March 28, 1926, in West Virginia, son of the late Rev. Basil Dolen and Mary Hess Nida Dolen. He was blessed to be one of fourteen children, seven brothers and six sisters. He, along with is wife, owned and operated Dolen New and Used Furniture. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah J. Vannatter Dolen. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and George “Bobby” Gooch of Huntington; one grandson, George Gooch Jr and his wife Teresa; two granddaughters, Deana Lightle and her husband Rick, and Melanie Nace and her husband Russell; six great-grandchildren, Jacqueline, Amanda and Jared Gooch, Shane Lightle, Stephanie Nace and Melissa Dolen; one step-great-grandchild, Derek Lightle; and many special friends and loved ones.
Virginia Imogene Valleau
Virginia Imogene Valleau, 81, of Cross Lanes died July 9, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was a business and social studies teacher at Poca High School and Poca Middle School for 35 years, starting in 1960. She was also the sponsor of the cheerleading squad for many years, the advisor for FBLA, and a strong supporter of all Putnam County School activities. During WWII she worked for the Department of the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia. She was a graduate of Kermit High School and Morris Harvey College.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis F. and Daisy M. Talbert of St. Albans.
Surviving: husband, Robert J. “Bob” Valleau; sons, Willie F. “Mickey” of Michigan, John and Jim, both of Cross Lanes, and Adam of Baltimore, Maryland; six grandchildren; sister, Frances Carr of Huntington.
A memorial service was held Friday, July 12, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Jonathan Nettles and the Rev. Jack Parsons officiating.
