James David Reeves, 55, of Buffalo died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at home following a short illness.
He was a former carpenter at Union Carbide and a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge No. 757.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles S. Reeves, and mother, Avalee Blankenship Reeves.
Surviving: wife, Mary Evelyn Wells Reeves; brother, Charles J. Reeves of Buffalo; sister, Mary L. Winters of Hometown, half-sister, Joan Smith of St. Albans; five nieces; one nephew.
A memorial service was held Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Mike Tucker officiating.
Denise Alma Cain
Denise Alma “Sugar” Cain, 43, of Hurricane died July 11, 2002.
She was a homemaker.
She was born July 26 1958 in Baltimore, Maryland, a daughter of Leo Robert Cain of Buckeye and the late Alma Mae Wenger Cain. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister, Darlene “Candy” Cain, a brother, Donald Cain, grandarents, Mack Wenger and Harry and Maggie Cain.
Surviving: daughters, Serena Rene Cain Clagg of Hurricane and Stephanie Dawn Cain of Augusta, Georgia; father and stepmother, Leo Robert and Alice Marie Cain of Buckeye; sisters, Dianna Doughty of North Augusta, South Carolina, Debra Cain Trainer of Marlinton, and Donna Buttino of Detroit, Michigan; brothers, Dennis Cain of Buckeye and David Cain of Dunmore; grandmother, Patsy Wenger of Arbovale.
Service was held Tuesday, July 16 2002, at VanReenen Funeral Home, Marlinton, with Pastor Jack Burks and the Rev. David Rittenhouse officiating. Burial was in Gibson Cemetery, Slatyfork.

Glen Edward “Scrappy” Call, 42, of Culloden died July 13, 2002.
He was a former general contractor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen E. Sr. and Sue Call.
Surviving: sister, Diane Call of Hurricane, financee, victoria Simmons; many cousins and friends.
Graveside service was held Monday, July 15, 2002, at Leadmon Cemetery, Winfield, with the Rev. Roger Ross officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Ordie Paul Meadows
Ordie Paul Meadows, 79, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Minister Ron Ross and Minister David Gladwell officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born March 26, 1923, a son of the late Lewis and Mary Meadows. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Paul Arthur Meadows; two brothers, Luther Meadows and Floyd Meadows; and two sisters, Gertrude Everett and Christina Curry. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9738 Guyandotte, and a member of the American Legion Post 139 Milton. He was also a member of the Barboursville Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Jewell Cooper Meadows; one son, Michael Meadows; one daughter, Angela Fraley; four brothers, James Meadows, Kelsey Meadows, John Meadows and Omer Meadows; two sisters, Charlene Labus and Buford Blackburn; four grandchildren, Jodi Chandler, Tammy Plank Shawn Fraley and Michael Meadows Jr.; and eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Plank, Christopher Miles, Lindsay Miles, Tyler Fraley, Kyle Fraley, Mikhayla Meadows, McKenna Meadows and Danielle Fulton.
Rev. Woodrow “Woody” Wilson Chapman
The Rev. Woodrow “Woody” Wilson Chapman, 84, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Clifford Wilcoxen and the Rev. Tracy Mills. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born October 8, 1917, in Hurricane, W.Va., a son of the late Edgar and Lula Turner Chapman. He was retired from Union Carbide after 28 years of service and was a member of Union Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Lee Chapman; four sisters, Leota Neumeyer, Arizona Leadmon, Zelpha Crouch and Marina Runyon; and three brothers, John, Clinton and Joe Chapman. He is survived by his wife, Maxine McComas Chapman; a grandson, Ted Scott Chapman of Jacksonville, Florida, and two sisters, Reba Forth of Milton and Freda Gibson of Hurricane. Herbert J. Jordan
Herbert J. Jordan, 78, of Huntington, went to his heavenly home Wednesday, July 10, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Trinity Church of God by the Rev. Dr. Gary Patton. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born April 25, 1924, in Huntington, a son of the late Herbert Jordan Sr. and Dena Conkright Jordan. He was also preceded in death by a son, Herbert Dwight Jordan; his mother-in-law, Ruby Layne; and one sister, Mary Allen. He founded Jordan Electric Company in 1959, and was a member of IBEW Local 317. He was a member of Trinity Church of God where he was a devoted leader and served as a council member. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in five major campaigns during World War II as a PFC and Medic. Herb was a licensed pilot and an avid reader. He loved to play baseball and softball and at the age of 65, broke in a new glove. He was the loving husband for 59-and-half years of Eloise Layne Jordan; the loving father of two daughters, Jan Coyer and her husband Larry of Denver, Colorado, and Linda Jordan of Huntington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Leigh Jordan of Barboursville, and Chris and Debbie Jordan of Huntington; two grandchildren Matt Coyer and his wife Kristen of Carmel Indiana, and Bradlee Jordan of Huntington; one great-granddaughter, Rachel Audrey Coyer of Carmel, Ind.; one brother, Bob Blake of Huntington; and a host of family and friends that he loved. Virginia M. Whittington
Virginia M. Hayes Whittington, 78, of Scott Depot passed away July 7, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
She was a homemaker, attended Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene and the John Henson Senior Center, Hurricane, and was a volunteer for Putnam County RSVP.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hason Whittington.
Survivors include a son, Billy Whittington of Scott Depot; granddaughter, Alice A. Whittington of Belcamp, Md., brothers, Paul Jividen of Nitro, Keith Jividen of Hometown.

Denver “Poppy” McConnell, 79, of Huntington, husband of Helen Blake McConnell passed away Sunday, July 7, 2002, in St. Marys Hospital Funeral committal services were held on Thursday, July 11 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, celebrant Jerry Cartmill officiating. He was born July 24,1922, Cabell County, W.Va., the son of the late Thomas A. McConnell and Garnet Garland McConnell. William Paul King, 80, of Milton went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 8, 2002, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Funeral services were conducted 2 P.M. He was born September 30, 1921, a son of the late William and Lessie Gothard King. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Ann King. He was a 30-year employee of Union Carbide as a chemical truck diver. He was owner and operator of the Mountaineer Opera House in Milton, and a member of the Milton Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner. He was an avid horseman and a past member of the Cabell County Public Recreation Board. Franklin Dale “Frank” Beckett, 66, of Salt Rock, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastors Bill Cassady and Lonnie Wilson. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born April 16, 1936, in Cabell County, son of the late Lonnie “Pooch” Beckett and Thelma Childers Beckett. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Harold “Tom” Beckett, Darrell “Bub” Beckett and Edward G. “Ed” Beckett. He was retired from the Cabell County Board of Education and was a veteran of the US Army. He is survived by and will be sadly missed by one sister and brother-in -law, Deloris and Denzil Childers of Barboursville; three brothers and five sisters-in-law, Larry and Sue Beckett, Bernard and Kathryn Beckett, Pat and Donna Beckett and Delores Beckett, all of Salt Rock, and Nila Jean Beckett of Barboursville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a retired Cabell County school teacher from Meadows Elementary. She was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church where she was active with Debborah Circle. She was a member of the Woman’s Club of Huntington, Retired Teacher Association, a tutor with the Tri State Literacy Council and member of the Glenbrier Bridge Club. She also preceded in death by her husband, Howard M. Cloke Jr., and a sister, Carolyn Merlor. Surviving are one son and one daughter, Howard M. Cloke III of Barboursville and Nancy C. Mr. Shawn Michael Chapman, 19, of Huntington, passed away Sunday June 30, 2002. “He is now united with eternal love.” Shawn was born July 23, 1982, in Huntington, W.Va. He was a graduate of Huntington High School and employed as a carpenter. He was the loving son of Jeff and Anne Higginbotham. He was devoted to his fiancee, Bonnie Jean Benjamin and an endearing and devoted father to his 20 month-old son, Tray Michael Lee Chapman. Additional survivors include his father, Marty Chapman; his four brothers who were dear to his heart, Nic Chapman, John, Eric and Arron Higginbotham; grandparents, Terry M. “Pappy” and Julia “Granny” Sanders, Anna “Nanny” Higginbotham, Bill and Ethel Tatum and Bill A. E.C. “Blackie” Erwin, 78, of Hurricane died June 24, 2002, at his residence.
He was a former employee of Bonton and Superior laundries and was retired from John White Construction Company. He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a Protestant.
Surviving: wife, Wilma Chapman Erwin; daughter, Mrs. Deborah L. Smith of Hurricane; sister, Helen Ellis of Hurricane; brothers, Leonard Erwin of Chester, Ohio and Clifford “Kip” Erwin of Hurricane; granddaughters, Kimberly A. Smith and Katherine A. Mary Pauline Garrison, 74, of Scott Depot, formerly of Buffalo, died June 23, 2002, in CAMC Memorial following a short illness.
She was a homemaker, a member of Buffalo United Methodist Church and a member of Buffalo Chapter 150 OES.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rennie E. “Pete” and Lola Warner Herdman, sister, Maxine Ashley, and brother, Richard A. Herdman.
Surviving: husband of 56 years, Dennis V. Garrison Sr.; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Harold Erwin of Eleanor, Lexie and George Damous of South Charleston; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis V. Jr. and Teresa Garrison of Hurricane, William T. Sr. and Dona Garrison of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
