Ronald K. Holstein
Ronald K. “Bob” Holstein 80, of Hurricane died June 23, 2002, in the VA Medical Center, Huntington, after a short illness.
He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Hurricane, a United States Army veteran of World War II and a self-employed tilesetter.
Surviving: wife, Daynese Wooten Holstein; daughters, Mona Jean Evans of Ona, and Cheryl Ann Parsons of Hurricane; grandchildren, Mallory Evans, Beau S. Evans and Lauren Taylor Parsons.
Service was held Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Phil Bower and the Rev. Jim Baker officiating. Burial was in Barker Cemetery, Ashford.

Betty J. McMillion
Betty Jane Asbury McMillion, 71, of Hurricane died June 24, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
She was born in Charleston, a daughter of the late James Albert and Mabel Anna Hawkins Asbury. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Durward N. McMillion, in 1989.
She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, and was a retired music teacher from the Fayette County School System, having 20 years’ service. She spent her early childhood in Glasgow and lived most of her adult life in Montgomery. She was a 1948 graduate of East Bank High School and received her B.A. degree in music from West Virginia Institute of Technology.
Surviving: daughter, Ruth Anna Johnson os Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Joe Daniel and Valerie Lynn McMillion of Hurricane; brother, James E. Asbury of Beckley; grandsons, Evan Patrick McMillion and Michael Lee Johnson, both of Hurricane.
Service was held Thursday, June 27, 2002, at chapman Funeral home, Hurricane, with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Graveside service was at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Memorial donations may be made to Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 2848 Putnam Avenue, Hurricane WV 25526.

Robert S. Young Sr.
Robert S. Young Sr., 77, of Scott Depot died June 24, 2002, in SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness.
He was a retired residential contractor, a former member of the Cross Lanes Lions Club and a former employee of Appalachian Electric Power. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a deacon and member of Perrow Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: wife, Stella Young of Scott Depot; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Skip Robinson of Scott Depot; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob an Jeanne Young of Scott Depot, Stephan Harry and Debbie Young of Ridge Manor, Florida, Alan and Kimberly Young of Cool Ridge; 16 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.
Memorial service was held Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at Perrow Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. Keith Cobb and the Rev. Jack Maxwell officiating. Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Perrow Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 5345 Big Tyler Road, Cross Lanes WV 25313.

Dr. Freda J. Slaymaker
Dr. Freda J. Slaymaker, 68, of Winfield died June 24 2002, after a long illness.
She was an optometrist for over 40 years, receiving her professional education at Illinois College of Optometry. While a stroke in 1996 forced her to retire, she never stopped missing her profession. She was loved by her patients and respected by her peers. During her membership in the West Virginia Optometric Association, she served in all offices, including president in 1979. She, along with other key members of the association, worked closely with the state Legislature to pass a law allowing optometrists to prescribe topical medications when needed. This resulted in West Virginia enacting the first such law in the United States. During service in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, she had the honor of being the first female optometrist in any branch of the armed forces.
Surviving: companion of 19 years Coolie Levy of Winfield; brother, Fred Slaymaker of Dunbar; niece, Maria Azria of New York City; nephew, Allen Slaymaker of Charleston; numerous cousins throughout the country.
Service was held Friday, June 28, 2002, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Don Myers, associate pastor of Shalom Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield. Memorial donations may be made to St. Francis School, 525 Holley Street, St. Albans WV 25177.

Jean Bazell Curry
Jean Bazell Curry, 80, of Winfield died June 25, 2002, at SunBridge Care of Putnam County.
She was born June 6, 1922 in Logan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby Justice Harrer and Otis Bazell.
She was retired from the WVSSPA in Charleston.
Surviving: daughter, Pamela Jane of St. Albans; son, David of Naples, Florida
Service was held Friday, June 28, 2002, at James Funeral Home Chapel, Aracoma, with the Rev. Murray Page officiating. Burial was in Fout Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill.

E. Guy Wright
Evangelist E. Guy Wright of Hurricane died June 25, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee, after a short illness.
He was an ordained minister with the Church of the Nazarene for 53 years and pastored many churches, including Alum Creek, Glasgow and Winfield churches of the Nazarene. He was also a commissioned evangelist and close his last revival June 19, 2002 in Winchester, Virginia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
Surviving: wife, Betty Greene Wright; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Mike Cuddy of Teays Valley; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Guy and Donna Wright of Gordonsville, Tennessee; stepchildren and their wives, Sherry and Danny Wright, William and Tammy Costner, both of Linville, North Carolina, Morgan and Lana Costner of Crossnore, North Carolina, Ricky and Mary Lynn Costner of Granite Falls, North Carolina; sisters, Donna Jean Lorenzo and Doris Byers, both of Greenville, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Stephen Michael and Christopher Earl Wright; stepgrandchildren, Kelly Wright Ward and Rick Ward, Jessi Costner, Kristen Costner, Kayla Clark, Kevin Wright, Sean Costner, and Joshua Costner; one great-grandson, Allen.
Service was held Friday, June 28, 2002, at Winfield Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. John T. Hayes officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests donations be made to Winfield Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, PO Box 359, Winfield WV 25213.

Buford E. Johnson
Buford E. Johnson, 84, of Oak Island, North Carolina died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Brunswick Community Hospital.
He was born March 22, 1918 in Putnam County, a son of the late Lemuel R. and Georgia Gallaspie Johnson.
He moved to Oak Island from Lakeland, Florida in 1998. Previously he lived in Hurricane for 65 years. He was retired from Union Carbide Corp. with 33 years of service, served on the Putnam County Board of Education for six years, was a member of Putnam Masonic Lodge No. 139 AF & AM, Hurricane, and formerly served as a Boy Scout leader. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving ETO and Pacific operations.
Surviving: wife of 54 years, Ella Ann Davis Johnson; daughters and sons-in-law, Nadine and John Kirk of Oak Island, Carol Ann and Don Wright of Moorestown, New Jersey; sisters, Bernice Sovine of Hurricane and Patricia Windon of Lakeland, Florida; five grandchildren Erika, Monika and Jessica Wright, all of Moorestown, and Stephanie and Jared Kirk, both of Oak Island.
A memorial service was held Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Jim McGehee officiating. The family suggest memorial donations be made to Putnam Masonic Lodge No. 139 AF & AM, c/o Bruce Campbell, 135 Taylor Street, Hurricane WV 25526.

William Sherman “Pap Paw” Medley
Mr. William Sherman “Pap Paw” Medley, 87, of Milton, WV, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova with Dr. T.J. DuBose and Minister John Holland officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery, Kenova. Sherman was born April 26, 1915, in Wayne County, WV, a son of the late Charles and Maggie Rutherford Medley. He was a member of the Milton Baptist Church and lifetime member of the Ceredo Crescent Masonic Lodge #32 AF&AM. He was retired from Owens-Illinois where he was the Head Foreman of the Electrician Shop. Pap Paw was preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve Parsons, and his brothers, Sherrill, John and Robert Medley. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alberta Lee “Dossie” Medley of Milton, WV, and his daughter, Donna M. Painter of Milton, WV; his granddaughter, Rae Ann Parsons and her husband Wendell Parsons of Huntington, WV, and his grandson, Jason W. Parsons of Huntington, WV. He is also survived by his sisters, June Burris and her husband, Eddy of Huntington, WV and Betty Maynard and her husband, Robert of Fort Worth, Texas. Special sisters-in-law are Pauline Medley of Ceredo, WV, and Carrie Medley of Williamson, WV and special brother-in-law, Woody Parsons of Lavonia, Mich. Expression of sympathy may be made to the Milton Baptist Church, 1123 Church St., Milton, WV 25541.

Rickie David Carpenter
Rickie David Carpenter, 45, of Fraziers Bottom, passed away Wednesday in Charleston Area Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. He was born October 6, 1956 a son of David and Harlene May Carpenter. He was a cable technician for PMI. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his wife, Robin Carpenter; three daughters, Angel and Brian Bukowski of Akron, OH, Shannon and Jason Baum of Akron, OH, and Missy Carpenter, and special friend Teah Senter of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; four sisters, Sheri Carpenter of Arizona, Teri LaRosa of Pennsylvania, Lisa Carpenter of Arizona, and Kathy Wells of Akron, OH; paternal grandmother, Rissie Carpenter of Norton, OH and maternal grandmother, Gladys May of California; three brothers-in-law, Gary Harshbarger of Milton, Dale Legg of Catlettsburg, KY,. and Danny Legg of Akron, OH; two sisters-in-law, Connie D’Anjou of New Hampshire and Gypsy Perrone of Akron, OH; six grandchildren, Tre’, Tyler, Hope, Brian, Taylor, and Jaysen. There was no visitation. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Vernon J. Holland
Vernon J. Holland, 71, of Lesage, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002, at home after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born March 16, 1931, in Huntington, a son of the late Joseph and Christine Ansel Holland. He was retired from Connors Steel. He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Holland. He is survived by his wife, Edna Hill Holland; two daughters, Joanne Holland of Denver, Colorado, and Linda Hager of Springfield, Ohio; one son, Brian Holland of Lesage; one sister, Juanita Fife of Huntington; six grandchildren, David Cobb, Stephanie Cobb, Amanda Dillow, Jessica Hager, Adam Holland and Christian Holland; and one great-grandchild, Christopher Riley Dodson.

George Allen Newman
George Allen Newman, 58, formerly of Milton, husband of Brenda McDonie Newman, died Sunday, June 23, 2002 at his Woodbury, Tenn., home. He retired from Huntington Alloys. Also are one son Nicky Newman of Barboursville; one daughter, Penny Sowards of McMinnville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Summer Sowards and Heath Sowards, both of McMinnville. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Woodbury Funeral Home; burial in Mountain View Cemetery, McMinnville.

Elsie Smith
Elsie Smith, 74, of Huntington, died June 22, 2002 in Heritage Manor. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at by the Rev. Richard Sexton. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born May 4, 1928, in Williamson, W.Va, daughter of the late Lewis P. and Pearl Harris Smith. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Mount. She was a member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include three sisters, Edith Cook of St. Albans, W.Va., Irma Adkins and Nancy Jane Smith both of Huntington; one brother, Marvin Lee Smith of Huntington; nieces Pat Dickinson, Ginger Lazaro and Penny Mount; and a nephew, Steve Smith. Henson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
