She attended Maranatha Fellowship.
She was preceded in death by the father of her nine children, Lloyd Aldridge.
Surviving: husband of 25 years, William Atkins; children, Kathy Johnston, Roger Aldridge, Tom Aldridge and Jackie Oxley, all of St. Albans, Donna Custer of Florida, Rick Aldridge of Massachusetts, Connie Atkins and Patty Bailey, both of Scott Depot, and Jan Siders of Nitro; three stepchildren; brothers, Larry Rogers of Virginia, Pete Rogers of Scott Depot, and Jimmie Rogers of Dunbar; 33 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans, with Pastor James Wright and Pastor Terry Hogue officiating. Private family burial was in Scary Creek Cemetery, Scott Depot. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

Stanford E. Duffer
Stanford E. Duffer, 89, of Teays Valley died August 19, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a member of First Church United Methodist, Dunbar, and retired from Union Carbide’s South Charleston plant in 1968.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie M. Wingett Duffer.
Surviving: sons and daughter-in-law, Fred A. and Nancy C. Duffer of Teays Valley, and Larry E. Duffer of Burnsville, Minnesota; daughter, Emma Ruth Jarrett of Telford, Tennessee; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, August 23, 2002, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. John A. Mason officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Phyllis Ann Carroll
Phyllis Ann Walls Carroll, 72, of Leon died August 20, 2002, at SunBridge of Putnam following a long illness.
She was a homemaker and member of Arbuckle Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Carroll, parents, Clayton and Emma Jane Nichols Walls, three sisters and five brothers.
Surviving: daughters, Dorothy E. Gillenwater of Leon, Deloris S. Young of Elyria, Ohio, Emma “Trudy” Montooth of Sweetwater, Tennessee, Mary Jane Litchfield of Henderson, Martha Cossin of Leon, and Lisa Lynn Wilcoxen of Fraziers Bottom; sons, Larry Wayne Carroll of Lakeland, Florida, Jerry Dewayne Carroll of Hurricane, David Anthony Carroll of Venice, Florida, Clayton Emory Carroll of Beckley, Donald Ray Carroll of Alabama, and Claude Edgar Carroll of Texas; stepson, Paul Fredrick Carroll of Florida; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, August 23, 2002, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Larry Covert officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Frances R. Roberts
Frances R. Roberts, 73, of Hurricane died Tuesday, August 20, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital, after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and member of the Church of the Living God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph R. and Liddie F. Johnson Larck, and a son, James Richard Smith.
Surviving: companion, Elwood Thaxton; daughters, Deloris A. Hamon of Culloden and Rutha A. Smith of Glenwood; son, Donald D. Smith Jr. of Pinch Spring; brothers, Curtis Larck of Cross Lanes, Alvin Larck of St. Albans, and Hobe Larck of Powellton; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, August 23, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor George Sturgeon officiating. Burial was in Smith Cemetery, Scott Depot. The family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Frances R. Roberts, 300 Scott Avenue, Morgantown WV 26508.

Pamela Jane Noel
Pamela Jane Noel, 45, of Hurricane died Thursday, August 22, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.
She was a member of Dunbar First Baptist Church.
Surviving: father, Forest Noel of Hurricane; brothers, Clarence Noel and Denny Noel, both of Hurricane; sisters, Patty Jo Noel and Ruth Ann Noel, both of Hurricane; aunt, Ruth Ann Rhodes of California; sisters-in-kaw, Charlotte Noel and Helen Noel; niece, Amy Noel; nephew, Andy Noel.
Service was held Monday, August 26, 2002, at Dunbar First Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas E. Stevens Jr. and the Rev. Mark Jarrell officiating. Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, was in charge of arrangements.

Josephine Conner
Josephine Young Conner, 88, of Hurricane, formerly of Sissonville, died August 21, 2002, after a long illness.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane and will be remembered as an avid gardener and a talented artist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Smith Conner.
Surviving: daughters, Jo Ellen “Jody” Conner of Charleston and Alice Ann Davis of Gatlinburg, Tennessee; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; caregiver, Betty Pauley of Nitro.
Graveside service was held Saturday, August 24, 2002, at Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiatiing. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

William A. Weaver
William A. “Bill” Weaver, 77, of Winfield died August 21, 2002, in the Methodist Hospital, Sacramento, California, after a short illness.
He was a retired construction worker, out of the Carpenters Local 1207, Charleston, with 44 years’ service. He was a member of Winfield Baptist Church, Chelyan Masonic Lodge 158 AF&AM, Charleston Scottish Rite Bodies and Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston. He was a U.S. Marine Corps 4th Marine Division veteran of World War II and the Korean War and a member of the Chosin Few. He was a 32-year resident of Winfield.
Surviving: wife, Irene Erskine Weaver; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca M. and Matt Crist of Loveland, Ohio; grandsons, Ryan M. and Kyle A. Crist; sisters, Louise Priddy and Catherine Meadows, both of Belle, and Margaret Bishop of Sacramento, California; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Tuesday, August 27, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Doug McComas officiating. Burial was in Witcher Cemetery, Blle, with miliarty graveside rites conducted by Alum Creek VFW.

Paul Joseph “PJ” Booten Sr.
Paul Joseph “PJ” Booten Sr., 57, of Huntington passed away Sunday, August 18, 2002, at his residence. Memorial services were conducted Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville. He was born November 29, 1944, in Huntington, a son of the late Asa and Zorah Pyles Booten. He was a manager with Mansour’s Market. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Lusher Booten; one son, Paul Booten Jr. of Huntington and his fiancee, Beverly Christie Dial; one brother, David Booten of Huntington; one grandson Christopher R. Booten; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Chris Muller and Lee and Annette Sullivan. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, P.O. Ashley Nicole McComas
Ashley Nicole McComas, 6, of Huntington, W.Va. passed away Saturday, August 17, 2002, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington. She was born September 27, 1995, in Huntington, the daughter of Jeremy Todd and Tina G. Smith McComas. She was a first grader at Huntington Elementary School. In addition to her parents, she is survived by one brother, Bradley McComas at home; paternal grandfather, Richard McComas Jr. of St. Joseph, Mich.; paternal grandmother, Diana Lynn Ward McComas of Huntington; paternal great-grandparents, Richard Sr. and Claudette Huckeby McComas of Charlotte, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Hobert and Nora Smith of Milton, W.Va.; maternal great-grandmother, Emily Smith of Milton; and several loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 21, 2002, at Mud River Baptist Church, Ona, W.Va. with Pastor Don Wheeler officiating; burial in Milton Cemetery. JoAnn Dayhoff
JoAnn Dayhoff, 70, of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday August 21, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was born August 4, 1932, in Huntington, the daughter of the late Joshua Raymond and Opal Harshbarger Clark. She was a retired clerk at St. Mary’s Hospital for 25 years serving in the Obstetrics, Business and Social Services departments. She attended Staunton Street Apostolic Life Cathedral and Highlawn Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald David Dayhoff in 1993, and one brother, Ed Clark. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Page Kitchen of Barboursville and Marsha and Dennis Lott of Columbus; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jill Dayhoff of Barboursville; two grandchildren, Josh Kitchen and Chelsea Kitchen; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Harold and Jan Clark of Cottageville, W.Va, Joe and Helga Clark of Dayton, Ohio, David and Pam Clark of Huntington and Ann Clark; additional in-laws, Ruth Ann Dayhoff of Belmont, W.Va., Lyle and Mary Dayhoff of Little Hocking, Ohio, and Clark and Annabelle Dayhoff of Huntington, and special friends, Tuffy and Mary Harshbarger of Barboursville. Allen O. “Bob” Beach
Allen O. “Bob” Beach, 67, of Huntington passed away Friday, August 23, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, August 26, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Brad Toney. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born January 20, 1935, in Barboursville, a son of Mildred Nicholas Carico of Huntington and the late Delbert Odell Beach. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Beach. He is survived by his wife, Tyann Boothe Beach; two sons, Joseph Beach and his wife, Amy, of Ona and Donald L. Beach at home; two sisters, Jean Gue and her husband, Lester, of Huntington and Loretta Beach of Huntington; and one brother, William Leon Beach of Huntington.

Julia Katheryn Thompson, 85, of Culloden, widow of Wilson F. Thompson, died Friday, August 23, 2002 in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Funeral services were held Monday, August 26, 2002 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Violet Frances MeadowsViolet Frances Meadows, 79, of Barboursville, suddenly passed away Saturday, August 24, 2002, at home. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at the Barboursville Church of Christ by Minister George Topping and Minister David Gladwell; burial in Milton Cemetery. She was born September 19, 1922, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late James Albert and Chloe Clagg Hatfield. She was a member of the Barboursville Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, James Howard Meadows; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ed Steen of Barboursville; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Diane Meadows of Ona, W.Va., Howard Meadows and Carol Arkell of Barboursville and Richard Meadows and his special friend, Steve Walker, both of Columbus, Ohio; four sisters, Lessie Moses, Essie Clagg, Myrtle Chapman and Bessie Holley, all of Milton, W.Va.; one brother, Harold Lloyd Hatfield of Milton; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Dorothy. William R. Rhodes
William Romma Rhodes, 73, of Buffalo died August 11, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was born May 12, 1929 in Charleston, a son of the late William Brady Rhodes and Belva Rhodes Wade. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Rhodes.
He was an Air Force veteran and was retired from Tri-State Home Center. He was a Christian and attended Buffalo Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving: wife, Doris E. Rhodes; sons and daughters-in-law, William Jeffery and Debbie Rhodes of Gallipolis, Ohio, William Brady and Amy Rhodes of Hurricane; stepdaughrer, Cherie Elaine Forbes of Indianapolis; stepsons, Timothy David Miller of Buffalo and Matthew Lee and wife, Selene, Miller of Scott Depot; sisters, Freda Wilkinson and Mabel Angell, both of Charleston, Wanda and husband, Berman Wilkinson of Forest, Virginia; sister-in-law, Joann Rhodes of Pocatalico; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Joan Hanes of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Service was held Wednesday, August 14, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Sidney Warner and the Rev. Jimmie McKnight officiating. Burial was in McCown Cemetery, Cross Lanes. Paul A. Whittington
Paul A. Whittington, 56, of Teays Valley, formerly of St. Albans, died August 11, 2002, in Nitro after a long illness.
He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union, Charleston, Nitro Moose Lodge #565 and the Church of Christ.
Surviving: sons, Cecil Alvin “Hunky” of Poca and David Allen “Dunky” of Teays Valley; four grandchildren; companion, Deloris “Jo” Doss of Teays Valley; her children, Catherine Bowman of St. Albans, Merle Doss of Glenn Ross, Texas, Mooney Hendrix of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, Mike and Kevin Doss, both of Hurricane; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother, May Edna Craig Whittington of Nitro; sisters, Violet Whittington, Aunita Dickerson and Glenda Brester, all of Nitro, Evelyn Parrish and Debra Harris, both of St. Albans, Jeanette Dempsey of Huntington; brothers, Cecil Ray of Columbus, Ohio, Rick of Cross Lanes, and Ernie of St. Albans.

William C. Brabbin Sr.
William C. Brabbin Sr., 73, of Winfield died August 12, 2002.
He was born in Kanawha County and was a graduate of East Bank High School in 1947.
He retired in 1989 from Union Carbide Institute Plant as a shift superindendent with 41 years’ service. He was a member of Covenant Presabyterian Church, Cross Lanes, and a member of the Great Kanawha River Navy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Sr. and Virginia Brabbin; brother, Benjamin Brabbin, and granddaughter, Holly MacQueen Barnes.
Surviving: wife, Geneva Lipscomb Brabbin; brother, Robert Brabbin Jr.; sister, Susie McCormick; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Brabbin MacQueen and Jim MacQueen; son and daughter-in-law, William Jr. and Deborah Brabbin; son, Michael Brabbin; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

David R. Knowles
David R. Knowles, 61, of Hurricane died August 13, 2002, after a short illness.
Born June 11, 1941 in Richmond, Virginia, he was the younger son of Tom Knowles and Mary H. Knowles.
He was a Vietnam veteran and a member of Masonic Lodge. He was a truck firver with 30 years, spending the last 11 years with Dart Transit Co.
He was the husband of 40 years of the late Mary Knowles.
Surviving: daughter, Debbie Handley and husband Randy, of Hurricane; sons, Robert Knowles and wife, Lori, of Wichita, Kansas and David Knowles and wife, Tammie, of Columbia, South Carolina; brothers, Rufus Knowles and Thomas Knowles; 21 grandchildren.
Service ws held Friday, August 16, 2002, at Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum, Hurricane, with Shelby McNeely officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Custodio Cielo Eligado
Dr. Custodio Cielo Eligado, 86, of Hurricane died August 16, 2002, at Select Specialty Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born on September 27, 1915 in the Philippines. He was a Roman Catholic and was active in community services, inlcuding the Philippine Tuberculosis Society in his younger days. He received a nursing degree at the University of the Philippines, a dental degree at Centro Escolar University, and a medical degree at the Univserity of Santo Tomas. He was pulmonary specialist and was a member of several medical associations including the American College of Chest Physicians. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, gardening and children.
Surviving: wife of 61 years, Purisima Eligado; children and spousies, Arturo and Jeanne Eligado of Cleveland, Ohio, Erlinda and Lorenzo Serna of Chicago, Illinois, Edna and Salvador Portugal of Charleston, Nilo and Carolyn Eligado of San Francisco, California, Arlene and Juanito of Dyer, Indiana, and Delia and Marc Rhoads of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Mass was held on Monday, August 19, 2002, at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, Charleston. Burial was in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery. Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made in Dr. Eligado’s memory to American Diabetes Assocaition Memorial Program, PO Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Clarence E. Spradling
Clarence E. Spradling, 64, of Hurricane died Thursday, August 15, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a sudden illness.
He was the owner of Bush-Spradling Inc., Hurricane, and also was a retired deputy sheriff for Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, and a former Charleston police officer.
Surviving: wife, Joan Calabrese Spradling; stepsons, Johnny Bush of Teays Valley and Ralph Bush of Charleston; daughter, Kim Hammers of Norfolk, Virginia; son, Clarence “Bo” Spradling Jr. of Norfolk; sisters, Betty Zotich of Melbourne, Florida and Barbara Roberts of Dunbar; grandchildren, J.C. Bush and Lindsey Bush.
Service was held Monday, August 19, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Iona Virginia “Midge” Craig Grady, 74, of Buffalo died August 17, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, following a short illness.
She was a homemaker, attended West Virginia Home Mission, Nitro, and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Oldaker Craig, and husband, John O. Grady.
Surviving: daughters, Cynthia Fox of Hometown and Barbara Grady Dickerson of Columbus, Ohio; sons, William E. Grady of Nitro, Jerry A. Grady of Vincent, Ohio, and Danny J. Grady of Laurens, South Carolina; brothers, Howard C. Craig and Roy M. Craig, both of Buffalo, and Johnny M. Craig of Bowles Ridge; sisters, Elnora Hill of Buffalo, Berna Joe Higginbotham of Leon, and Hazel Absten of Cottageville; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.
