Ms. Robin G. “Rabbit” Collins Ennis, 31, of Hurricane died July 28, 2002 in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was born July 8, 1971, attended West Teays Baptist Church, Hurricane, and was a writer and poet.
Surviving: daughters, Heather Dawn, Britney Nichole and Casey J. Ennis, all of Winfield; mother and stepfather, Shirley May and Billy Ray Cowan Sr. of Milton; father, Darrell Ross Collins of Elizabethton, Tennessee; sisters, Debbie Thompson of Hurricane and Shelia Mullins of Elizabethton, Tennessee; bother, Billy Ray Cowan Jr. of Milton.
Service was held Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Ray Sovine officiating. Burial was in the Carnes family Cemetery, Hurricane.
Carl Edward Gilfilen
Carl Edward Gilfilen, 77, of Hurricane died July 28, 2002 at home after a short illness.
He was the son of the late Charles and Erma Holley Gilfilen. He was also preceded in death by one grandaugher, five brothers, and two sisters.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, a veteran of the US Army, was retired from Union Carbide, Institute, with 37 years of service, was a member of the city council for 21 years, a lifetime member of VFW Post 9097, a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a former member of the Hurricane Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving: wife of 54 years, Janice Lou Hodges Gilfilen; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Marshall Ginn of Hurricane, Marsha and Richie Thompson of Hurricane, Verda Myers of Wisconsin, Carla and Jerry Flynn of Eleanor; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Pam of Mount Sterling, Ohio, Brett of Hurricane, Rex and Teresa of Hurricane; brother, Donzie Gilfilen of Hurricane; sister, Opal Jones of Huntington; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, July 31 2002, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles Hendricks and the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial donations be made to Hospice or First Baptist Church Family Life Center.
Gloria Mae Tolley
Gloria Mae Tolley, 77, of Scott Depot died July 28, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 30, 1925 in Putnam County, a daughter of the late John Jackson Boggess and Pearl Curtis Hudson Boggess.
She and her late husband, William E. Tolley Sr., retired to Florida in 1986 and, after his death, she spent her summers in West Virginia.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Rod Inman of Palm Bay, Florida; son and daughter-in-law, William and Patricia Tolley of Culloden; sister, Norma Jean Richardson of Culloden; granddaughters, Mandi Inman of Palm Bay, Cazzie and Michelle Lucas; grandsons, Milton Clark Jr. of Pam Bay, William Jackson “B.J.” Tolley of Richmond, Virginia, Michael Earl Tolley of Huntington, Billy and Kevin Hicks; great-grandson, William Jackson Tolley Jr.; special people in her life, Lolita “Sise” Hicks and Earl Hicks.
Service was held Thursday, August 1, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield.
Willard E. Hauldren Jr.
Willard Edward Hualdren Jr., 76, of Granbury, Texas died July 30, 2002, in Lake Grandbury Medical Center after a short illness.
He was a former resident of Hurricane for 64 years, was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II and was a member of Putnam Masonic Lodge #139 AF & AM, Hurricane. He was self-employed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret B. Hauldren, in 1997.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Phillip Harrison of Forth Worth, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Morris and Clair Ann Hauldren of Hurricane; grandchildren, Chelsea and Blake Harrison, both of Forth Worth; cousin, Della Patterson of Hurricane; several nioeces and nephews.
Service was held Friday, August 2, 2002, at chapman Funeral home, Teays Valley. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Keith Mathes
Keith Mathes, 51, of Hurricane died July 31, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long battle with diabetes.
He was a 1969 granduate of Nitro High School He was employed for 25 years as a pipefitter with union Carbide Construction and Brown & Root Construction.
He was preceded ind eath by his father, Earl Mathes.
Surviving: wife, Genny of Hurricane; son, Anthony Mathes of Fraziers Bottom; sisters, Sharon Henderson of Beckley and Robin Humphreys of Nitro; niece, April Henderson of Beckley; nephew, Zachary Humphreys of Nitro.
Service was held Friday, August 2, 2002, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with Pastor Joe Scarberry officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
Laymon F. Johnson
Laymon F. Johnson 88, of Hurricane died August 1, 2002, at home after a long illness.
He retired from H.R. Porter Steel Mill of Huntington. He was president of the Local Union 37. He was a member of Mount Moriah Church, Hurricane.

Johnson; sons, Charles Johnson of Teays Valley, Kurtis Johnson of Missouri, Jeffrey Johnson of Poca, and Kemron Johson of Georgia; daughter, Letha Johnson of Huntington; brothers Leslie Johnson of Hurricane and Willard Johnson of Ohio; sister, Mynona Smith of Huntington; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.

Ashford Eric Painter
Ashford Eric Painter, 87, of Liberty died August 1, 2002, at home.
He was born April 28, 1915 at Given, a son of the late Opha and Ethel Carney Painter. He was employed at Goodrich Gulf Chemical and retired as an assistant instructor of agriculture at the Roane-Jackson Technical Center. He was a member of the Community Tabernacle Church at Liberty and a life member of the Chemical Valley Racking Horse Association.
Surviving: wife, Opie Bailey Painter; sons, Larry D. Painter and David L. Painter, both of Liberty; sisters Velma Harris of South Charleston and Vada Kerns of Dunbar; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, August 3, 2002, at Parsons-Waywright Funeral Home, Ripley. Burial was in Moss Chapel Cemetery, Given.
Arno Lee Arthur II
Arno Lee Arthur II, 45, died August 2, 2002, after a long illness.
He was a former resident of Bancroft and Colorado Springs, a graduate of Poca High School and an Army veteran. He was a certified nursing assistant and a cosmetologist.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arno L. Arthur Sr.
Surviving: mother, Jacqueline Arthur of Bancroft; brother, Mark of Winfield; sister, ale Cavender of Bancroft; three nephews.

Ralph O. Chaney
Pastor Ralph O. Chaney, 57, of Culloden died in Cabell Huntington Hospital after a short illness.
He was currently the pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church. He was a lifelong resident of the area.
Surviving: wife, Doris O. Chaney; sons, Brent Chaney of Priest River, Idaho; daughters, Angie Fizer of Hurricane and Diana Chaney of Culloden; eight grandchildren; three brothers.

Donna Webster Witt, 61, of Hurricane, died August 2, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a former practical nurse, a graduate of Winfield High School, and had attended West Alban Church of God, St. Albans, before her illness.
Surviving: parents, Simon and Naomi Webster of Scott Depot; daughter, Barbara Rocha and grandson, T.R. Rocha, both of Scott Depot, and both relocating to Shrevesport, Louisiana.

Johnny Allen Dyer, 54, of Ona, passed away Friday, August 2, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born October 7, 1947, in Huntington, the son of John M. Dyer and Mildred Petrie Dyer. He was founder and owner of Johnny’s Pizza. He was retired from American Car and Foundry (ACF). He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a graduate of Barboursville High School Class of ’65. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Emma Lou Donahue Dyer of Ona; a daughter, Tara K. Dyer and her special friend, Denny Henderson, both of Ona; a son, John Allen “Bear” Dyer Jr. and his special friend, Kelly Meehling, both of Ona; a godson, Bil Neal and his wife, Amy Neal, of Barboursville; a god-granddaughter, Anne-Marie Neal; a sister, Patricia Dyer of McKinney, Texas; brothers-in-law and families, Bob and Mary Donahue, Jim and Shirley Donahue; Rex and Barbara Donahue, Jack and Jewel Donahue and Keith and Betsy Donahue; and special friends, Debra Pinkerman and Ray Sager. Thomas W. McCallister, 72, of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Saturday, August 3, 2002, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens by the Rev. James Bolen. He was born November 21, 1929, in Huntington, a son of the late Thomas W. McCallister and Elizabeth Maxwell McCallister Dennison. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patty McCallister. He is survived by one daughter, Belinda Knight of Huntington; two sons, Thomas Eugene “Buddy” McCallister of Proctorville, Ohio, and Gary Daniel McCallister of California; and one sister, Mae Parsons of Huntington; eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
