Ethel R. Pendleberry, 89, of St. Albans died September 10, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, St. Albans, and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Pendleberry, and grandson, Mike.
Surviving: sons, Jack Pendleberry of Scott Depot, Teddy Pendleberry of Winfield, David Pendleberry of Big Chimney, and Rick Pendleberry of Scott Depot; sister, Elizabeth Grinstead of St. Albans; brothers, Herbert J. Rimmer Jr. of North Carolina and James Rimmer of Utah; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, September 14, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Fred D. McCallister officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.

James E. Crace
James E. Crace, 72, of Huricane died September 9, 2002, at his residence.
Born June 1, 1930 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Dewey and Pearlie Vanhoose Crace. He was also preceded in death by brother, Irvin Crace, and sisters, Josephine Dillenger and Helen Davis.
He served with the U.S. Navy in Korea and worked at Union Carbide as a chemical operating foreman. He was a 32nd degree Mason, sang and played bluegrass music with the Teays Valley Boys and was a Cub Scout leader. He was a member of Forrest Burdette Unitedf Methodist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: sons, Jimmy Crace and wife, Anita, of Scottsdale, Pennsylvania, Phil Crace and wife, Bobbie, of Walnut Cove, North Carolina; daughters, Kerry Cutlip and husband, Jim, of Hurricane, Lynn McLeod and husband, Joe, of Queensland, Australia; sisters, Pauline Keelin and Barbara Crace, both of Catlettsburg; 13 grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, September 13, 2002, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home, Catlettsburg, with Pastor Keith Crum officiating. Special music was provided by Robin and Scott Crum. Burial was in Catlettsburg Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations to the Diabetes Foundation in Teays Valley.

Drema Rose Fowler
Drema Rose Fowler, 81, of Buffalo died September 8, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a long illness.
Surviving: son, John Allessio of Charlotte, North Carolina; daughter, Jane Allessio Burcham of Huntington; caregivers, Fran and Evelyn Fultz of Buffalo.
Service was held Friday, September 13, 2002, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Winfield, with Mr. Hayward Harper officiating. Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul Russell Thomas
Paul Russell Thomas, 71, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002 in Putnam. Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Heck Home Milton with the Rev. James W. Caldwell officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Dec. 10, 1930, a son of the late James and Myrtle Thomas. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Ann Thomas; one grandson, Timothy Corey Thomas; one sister, Opal Collins and one brother, Lloyd Thomas. He retired from Southeastern Gas Company and from Eastern States Oil and Gas. He was also an oil and gas inspector for the state of West Virginia for 10 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9796, Milton, W Va, and a 45-plus year member of the Masonic Lodge in Albany, Ohio. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Anna and Tim Armstead of Elkview and Angia Hughes of Milton; one son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Angel Thomas of Milton, W.Va.; one sister, Helen Parker of Albany, Ohio; one brother, Harley Thomas of Chillicothe, Ohio; six grandchildren, Bradley D. Thomas, Shannon K. Hughes, Kathleen A. Armstead, Angela M. Thomas, Mariah R. Thomas and Caleb J. Thomas. Military graveside rights were be conducted by VFW Post 9738, Guyandotte.

Ruth Virginia Childers
Ruth Virginia Childers, 87, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in Teays Valley Center, Hurricane. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Bill Davis officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born Feb. 22, 1915, a daughter of the late Rev. G.C. and Mary Hutchinson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Emory Childers and eight brothers, Alva Hutchinson, Lonnie Hutchinson, Everett Hutchinson, Paul Hutchinson, Harold Hutchinson, James Hutchinson, Edward Hutchinson and John Hutchinson. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, and daughters-in-law, Emory and Emmaline Childers of Ona, and Charles and Donna Childers of Milton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Paul Roach of Winfield and Suzanna and Jeff Chapman of Milton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gene E. “Red” Rose
Gene E. “Red” Rose, 72, of Barboursville, W.Va., died Sunday, September 8, 2002. Funeral services were held on Thursday at Woodmere Memorial Park. He was born October 29, 1929, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Edward and Bertha McCormick Rose. Gene was the former owner of Dobson’s Bar and Grill in South Point, Ohio, he was the founder and owner of the Red Rose East End Tavern, he was the former owner of the Townhouse Restaurant in Ashland, Ky. He later worked as the chef at the Canteen Cafeteria at the VA Medical Center, where he was awarded many accommodations for his food service skills. Gene currently was the general manager for Stat’s Sports Bar, Barboursville. He was a member of the Elks Lodge BPOE 313. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserve. He is survived by a daughter, Lucinda S. Rose of Charleston S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Cheryl Rose of Barboursville, W.Va.; a granddaughter, Katie Elizabeth Rose of Huntington; a grandson, Todd Wallace of Barboursville; a sister, Maxine McCormick of Huntington; a half sister, Virginia Wilson of Dayton, Ohio; his special friend, Nellie Jean Booth of Chapmanville, W.Va.; and his “special” family at Stat’s Sports Bar. Michael Winston Cooper
Michael Winston Cooper, 51, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 9, 2002. Funeral service were conducted Thursday, September 12, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Milton. He was born on September 15, 1950, in Cabell County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Erva Winston Cooper and Thelma Naomi Cooper. His grandparents were the late Floyd Cooper and Ora Bell Cooper. He is survived by one daughter, Jessica Bell Cooper and her mother, Katrina S. Cooper. Special friends include Yancey Burns, Timmy Townsend, the late Jim Reece, Bryant and Norma Cole, Debbie Estes Strain and Greg Sovine. Also, he had a special living angel who took care of him on his last days here on earth, named Annie Hendrick. Michael was a singer, songwriter, gunsmith and farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam conflict. He was last employed by the State Road Department. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. Alvin ‘Tiny” Chapman
Alvin “Tiny” Chapman, 90, of Barboursville, the little man that sat on his porch and waved, went home to be with the Lord Monday, September 2, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, September 5, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Richard Black and the Rev. Sam Morris. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born April 17, 1912, in Mason County, a son of the late Alexander and Rhoda Ann Conrad Chapman. He was retired from the C&O Railroad and he attended Providence Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Vina Chapman; three brothers, Lindsey and Mervin Chapman and a baby brother; one great-grandson, Aaron Matthew Smith; and a special nephew, Calvin Jenkins. He is survived by his wife, Pansy Black Chapman; four daughters and sons-in-law, Diana Jean and Darrell Williams of Milton, Anna and George Smith of Culloden, Joyce and Mike Bowyer of Barboursville, and Vickey and Damon Scott of Milton; twin brother Calvin Chapman of Milton; a special niece, Louise Hodge; four granddaughters, Angela Bruce, Suzanne Beaver, Valerie Hatfield, all of Milton and Debra Morrison of Culloden; four grandsons, Christopher Chapman and Michael Bowyer, both of Barboursville, Kevin Williams of Salt Rock and Matthew Smith of Milton; 11 great-grandchildren; special friends, Peck and Vickie Rutherford; a special “daughter” Sue Grimes of Milton; and a host of many friends and loved ones. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington for their care and kindness.

Raymond R. Jeffrey
Raymond R. Jeffrey, 88, of Huntington, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 6, 2002 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Michael Rowe. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Sept. 22, 1913, in Barboursville, a son of the late Millard and Eula Dillon Jeffrey. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie, Leo and Roy Jeffrey. He was a retired employee of H.K. Porter and was a US. Army veteran serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Sadie Caldwell Jeffrey; one stepdaughter, Esther Lee Hensley of Huntington; one sister, Evelyn Eden of Barboursville; five brothers, Vivian, Tom, Paul, Stacey and Jack Jeffrey, all of Barboursville; and several nieces and nephews.

Cathy Jean Easthom Blackshire
Cathy Jean Easthom Blackshire, 40, of Huntington went to be with the Lord August 29, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital after a lifetime illness with diabetes. She was a legal document reader for Aspen Systems that contracted with the Department of Justice, and a homemaker. She was a member and youth leader of the Prophetic Miracle Ministry Church. She is survived by her husband, Eric Blackshire; two sons, Rodney A. Blackshire, and Joseph I. Snider II and his wife Angela; her parents, Rodney “Buck” and T.V. Pastor Patricia Boling Easthom, both of Huntington; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Kelly Easthom and Todd and Missy Easthom, all of Huntington. Special thanks to Vicky Blackshire, and Cathy’s brothers Bob and Todd, sisters of Prophetic Miracle Ministry for their special care during her illness, and especially thanks to Eric for his loving care. Funeral service were conducted Sunday, September 1, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. G.W. Black. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She will be missed by all that knew her. Goodbye, Mom.

Dr. William H. Blenko III
Dr. William H. Blenko, III, 55, of Williamstown, Vt., formerly of Milton passed away Sunday, August 25, 2002, in St Mary’s Medical Center. He was born May 29, 1947, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of William R Blenko Jr. of Milton and the late Jeanne M. Deakin Blenko. William was a graduate of Woodberry Forest, Milton High School and Marshall University. He had a masters degree in counseling from the University of South Carolina. He obtained a D.V.M. from the Ross School of Veterinary Medicine. He is survived by his father, William H. Blenko Jr. and special friend, Delores Hogan; brother and sister-in-law, Richard D. and Blenko of Milton; uncle, James and Marie Deakin of Milton and a host of other family and friends throughout the United States and England. Betty McDaniel
Betty McDaniel, 73, of Ona, W.Va., wife of Gene McDaniel, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital. She was born April 15, 1929, in Big Stick, W.Va., a daughter of the late Roy and Clara Bolen Johnson. She was also preceded in death by a son, Frankie Carter and a sister, Pat Davis. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Margaret Cothran of Owosso, Mich.; two brothers, Henry Thompson of Coal City, W.Va., and Joe Thompson of Springfield, Mo.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with Pastor James Mounts officiating. Burial and graveside services were conducted Wednesday, September 4, 2002, in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, W.Va. Chapman’s. Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Helen Hope Roberts Gentry
Helen Hope Roberts Gentry, 77, of Milton passed away Friday, August 30, 2002, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born February 2, 1925, in Milton, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Lydia Chapman Roberts. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Eva Borden; her brother, Ford Roberts; and her grandson, Andy Farmer. She was a retired clerk for Prudential Insurance Company. She was valedictorian for the Milton High School Class of 1942. She was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church. She is survived by her loving husband, John B. Gentry; two sons, Steve Gentry of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Phillip Gentry of Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Kay Farmer of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren, Scott Gentry, Jarrod Gentry, Jackie Gentry, Jenny Keaton and Mark Farmer; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Gentry and Ben Keaton. Ruby W. Spurlock
Ruby W. Spurlock, 95, of Glenwood, W Va. died Friday, August 30, 2002, at her daughter’s residence. Funeral service were conducted Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at the Sunrise United Methodist Church, Glenwood, by Rev. Rex Nance and Rev. Rick Brown. Burial in Sunrise Cemetery. Ruby was born April 16, 1907, in Glenwood, W.Va., a daughter of the late Herbert and Sophia Spurlock Gill. She was the oldest living member of the Sunrise United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Berkley Charles Simpson; her second husband, Steve Spurlock; one daughter, Peggy L. Grose; and one brother, Arbie Gill. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wilma J. and Paul Ward of Lesage; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles L. and Geraldine Simpson of Glenwood; five grandchildren Linda Hardwick of Lesage, Donald Simpson of New Port Richey, Fla., Berkley Simpson, Darlene Miller and Mike Grose, all of Glenwood; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine great great-grandchildren. Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers. Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Wines
Ruth Elkins Wines, 84, of Hurricane, formerly of Barboursville, died on Thursday, August 29, 2002, at Branchland in the care of her nieces, Mary Midkiff and Nina Cummings.
She was born July 18, 1918, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Fred and Polly Adkins. She was self-employed as a beautician in Virginia, employed with Sylvania as a utility operator and retired from Sears as a sales clerk. She attended the First Baptist Church inm Hurricane and was a member of Elmwood Baptist Church, Barboursville.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her former husband, Scesco Elkins, brothers, Oakley, Harold and Corbin Adkins, sisters, Della Adkins, Ruby Adkins, Lula Cummings and Ina Stowers.
Surviving: husband, Arthur Wines; brother, Fred “Coonie” Adkins; special nephew and great-niece, Danny Dailey and Amanda Dailey; several nieces, nephews, step-daughters and grandchildren; special thanks to loving friend and caregiver, Dreama Daniels.
Service was held Sunday, September 1, 2002, at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, with the Rev. Bobby Burns officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Clayton W. Groff
Clayton Owen Groff, 81, of Scott Depot died August 30, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was a member of Winfield Church of Christ, retired from American Electric Power, John Amos Plant, was a 60-year resident of Scott Depot and was a lifelong farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Audra Aulene Groff.
Surviving: sons, David Groff of Scott Depot, Daniel Groff and Richard Groff of Hurricane, and Keith Groff of Poca; daughters, Sharon White and Judith Romano of Hurricane; brothers, Benjamin Groff of Luling, Louisiana and Forres C. Groff, Jr. of Charleston; sister, Mary Foret of Littleton, North Carolina; grandchildren, Eric C. Groff of Hurricane, Carl David Groff and Kevin O. Groff of Scott Depot, Justin H. Groff, Darlene Dye and Heather Canterbury, all of Hurricane, and Lanette Pridemore of Winfield; great-grandchildren, Rikki K. Roberts of Hurricane and Ashley D. Pridemore of Winfield.
Service was held Sunday, September 1, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home Chapel, Teays Valley, with Minister George Erwin officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Joyce Slack
Joyce Meadows Slack, 67, of Hurricane died August 29, 2002, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bellingham, Washington, after a short illness.
She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, a homemaker and had taught community education classes in floral arranging, crafts and candymaking for the Putnam County Board of Education.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby J. Slack in 1984; parents, Lundy E. and Goldie Garrettson Meadows; sister, Margaret McCamy; brothers, Randall and Elliott Meadows.
Surviving: daughter, Bobby Joyce Levy of Hurricane; sons, Thomas Slack of Bellingham and Dale Slack of Cross lanes; sisters, Freda Canterbury of Parkersburg and Pauline Holston of Staunton, Virginia; nine grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Mr. Jim McGehee officiating., Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

James D. Landers
James Darold “J.D.” Landers, 86, of Poca died September 1, 2002.
He was the founder of Nitro Shade and Awning and Beckley Awning Company. He developed and held a patent on “Duratic” Aluminum Awning. He was the former co-owner of Landers Chevrolet and Maplewood Lodge, Hurricane.
Surviving: wife, Myrtle “Vi” Landers; daughters, Patricia Pritt and Diane Gibeaut-Hill, both of Poca; grandchildren, Cindy Jones and Stephen Pritt, both of Poca, Lisa Pritt of Wheeling, Jon Gibeaut of Poca, and James Gibeaut of Georgia; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Service was held Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Millard Mitchell and Pastor Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
