Robert L. Neary
Robert L. Neary, 62, of Shippensburg, Pennsylvanie, formerly of Winfield died August 30, 2002, in Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
Born June 30, 1940 in Winfield, he was a son of the late James and Anne Toler Nearly. He was also preceded in death by one brother.
He was a retired truck driver from Roadway Express in Carlisle. He was a member of Judson Baptist Church, Winfield, and was a United States Army veteran.
Surviving: wife, Andra L. Scott Neary; daughters and a son-in-law, Courtney D. and Harry Lilley of Chambersburg PA, Ashley N. Neary of Shippensburg, Casandra L. Neary at home, Terri Neary of West Virginia, Denise and Traci Neary, both of Texas; brothers, James Neary of Chambersburg and Frank Neary of Winfield; sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Ellen Sturgis of Newport News, Virginia, Doris and Homer Maddox of Scott Depot; grandson, Craig Stone of Texas.
Graveside service was held Thursday, September 5, 2002, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Chapel, Cross Lanes. Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg, was in charge of arrangements.
James W. McDavid
James W. “Bill” McDavid of Nitro died September 6, 2002, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness. He was a former resident of Regency Place in Scott Depot.
He was born January 28, 1923 in Willard, Kentucky, a son of the alte Willie and Nerva Oney McDavid. He was also preceded in deaty by his wife, Dolores Ann McDavid, sister, Lucille Adams of Grayson, Kentucky, and brother, Oney McDavid of Hurricane.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a boilermaker and worked in construction all his life. He was founder and president of Union Boiler Company, Putnam Fabricating Co., Cardinal Construction Co., Nitro Electric Co., and Solco Real Estate Development Co. He also designed and built Scarlet Oaks Golf Cource and Country Club in Poca.
He was an active member and a past president of the West Virginia Contractors Association. He was a member of the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth “Libby” and Larry Shrewsbury of Nitro; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Carol of Nitro, Tim and Susie of Houston, Texas, Jon and Lisa of Nitro, and Dan and Denise of St. Albans; grandchildren, Ben, Joel, Nathan, Ian, Brooke, Christopher, Jadob, Anthony, Lorien, Moriah, Meghan, and Logan; great-grandchild, Hannah; brother, Emory of Grayson.
Service was held Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at Cross Lanes United Methodist Church with Pastor Nathaniel Turner-Lacy officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Chapman Funeral home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Dorothy E. Lett
Dorothy E. Lett, 64, of Hometown died August 25, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
She attended Hometown Church of God Mission.
Surviving: husband, John Franklin Lett; children, John Franklin Lett Jr. of Virginia and Teresa Annie Perdue of Cross Lanes; brother, Harvey Persinger of Ohio; grandchildren, Kristyn Lett and Kasey Lett.
Service was held Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at Hometown Church of God Mission with Pastors Darren Persinger and Joe Scarberry officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Leonard I. Beller
Leonard I. “John” Beller, 54, of Liberty died August 25, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
Surviving: children, Renae Mann of South Charleston and Chris Beller of Culloden; sisters, Retha Dickerson of Nitro and Deloris Holmes of Hurricane; brothers, Golden Beller of Winfield, Raymond Beller of Red House, Willard and Darrell Beller, both of Poca; three grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, August 28, 2002, at Barnett Chapel Church, Liberty, with the Rev. Ray Humphrey officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Cynthia Lee Spaulding
Cynthia Lee Spaulding, 42, of Hurricane died August 26, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a 20-year resident of Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her father, Phillip Stanley.
Surviving: mother, Freda Stanley of Hurricane; companion of nine years, Robert J. Browning; daughters, Tracy and Kristi Spaulding at home; sons, Codie Spaulding and Robbie Stanley at home; grandson, Christian J. Wilford C. Cavender
Wilford C. “Buckshot” Cavender, 79, of Poca died August 27, 2002, in St. Francis Hospital.
He was a native of Kanawha County, a 30-year resident of Poca, retired mechanic from Monsanto Company with 33 years’ service, a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Grandview Baptist Church.
Suviving: wife, Freda J. Blevins Cavender; daughters, Deborah Bruce of Greenville, South Carolina and Pamela K. Jarrell of Teays Valley; sons, Bruce W. Cavender of St. Albans and Larry Allen Cavender of Poca; sisters, Mildred Saunders of Charleston, Vada Searls and Ruth Ellen Ferrell, both of Nitro; brothers, Clinton Lee “Jack” Cavender of Nitro and Donnie L. “Butch” Cavender of Poca; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.

Thelma E. Webb
Thelma E. Lyons Smith Webb, 83, of Scott Depot died August 27, 2002, at her residence after a long illness.
She was owner of Webb’s Catering for 43 years and was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, Scott Depot, where she was a trusteee, past secretary and treasurer. She was an assistant 4-H leader, Bigfoot P.C. Camps, member of Scott Depot Homemaker Club and Friendship Club. She was a 56-year resident of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer A. “Bill” Webb.
Surviving: daughter, Patricia Webb Cathey of Scott Depot; sons, Clarence R. Smith of Scott Depot and Harold E. Smith of Tulsa, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, August 30, 2002, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Lawrence Dailey officiating. Burial was in Smith-Webb Cemetery, Scott Depot.
Gary Lee Froggy” Chaney
Gary Lee “Froggy” Chaney, 48, of Ona, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 28, 2002, in St. Hospital. Funeral service were conducted Saturday, August 31, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. “Froggy” was born October 25, 1953, in Fairmont, W.Va, a son of Frances Chaney of Milton and the late Harry Chaney. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Robert “Bob” Shelton. He was a chemical operator for BASF. He had completed training at the police academy and was a former Milton Police Officer. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Betty Shelton Chaney; two stepdaughters and their spouses, Kim and Michael Salmons of Milton, and Tina and Eddie Howell of Racine, W.Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Carolyn Chaney of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Robert and Frances Chaney of Monett, Missouri; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Freda and Don Chapman of Milton, and Sylvia and Joe Neal of Vinton Ohio; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Larry “Bugs” and Barb Shelton and Calvin and Leora Shelton, all of Milton; one sister-in-law and her spouse, Becky and Dale Conrad of Milton; three grandchildren, Tristyn and Michael Salmons II, and Jacob Vititoe; two stepgrandchildren, Crissy and Vanessa Howell; special niece and nephew, Billy Chaney and Cathy Lemay; special friends at BASF; a host of family and friends. Garnett Lucille Carroll
Garnett Lucille Carroll, 88, of South Point, Ohio, formerly of East Lynn, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2002, in Pulley Nursing Home, South Point. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 31, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Clint Brown and the Rev. Heron Adkins. Burial in Carroll Cemetery, Hamlin. She was born December 15, 1913, in Milton a daughter of the late John R. and Goldie E. Wallace Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.W. Carroll, one son, Lester O.J. Sowards, and one great-grandson, T.J. Sowards. She is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Ramey of Huntington and Ruby Green of Mabscott, W.Va.; one brother, John J. Hall of Barboursville; two grandchildren Charles Sowards and Linda Adkins; one great-grandson, Kevin Paul Adkins; and one daughter-in-law, Juanita Christopher of East Lynn.
Jimmie Douglas Carrico
Jimmie Douglas Carrico, 71, formerly of Huntington, died August 26, 2002, at Lochfill Village, Indianapolis, Ind. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 30, 2002, at Ridgelawn Memorial Park Chapel by the Rev. Sue Jarrett. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born January 25, 1931, in Huntington, W.Va., son of the late Henry William and Icie Helen Hagley Carrico. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Naomi Mazarika, Eloise Wilson, Beulah Dillon and Ethel Lee Carrico; and brothers John W. Carrico and Bobby A. Carrico. He was a photographer. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Birdie Wolfe of Huntington; and a brother, Frank Carrico of Kansas City, Mo. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
H.F. “Fred” Harshbarger
H.F. “Fred” Harshbarger was surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Milton as he went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2002. A retired C&O Railroad engineer, Fred, 73, is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dora; two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Linda Harshbarger of Hurricane, David and Susan Harshbarger of Milton; one daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Dr. James Becker of Huntington; six grandchildren, Matthew, Adam and Joshua Harshbarger, Ross and Chelsie Harshbarger, and Katie Lee. He was the son of the late Chester and Pearl V. Chapman Harshbarger, and preceded in death by his sister, Madeline Fleshman. He was a member of the Milton Presbyterian Church and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Division 190. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Brenda F. Bills, 54, of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord Monday, August 26, 2002, at Cabell Huntington Hospital after a short illness. She was born June 25, 1948, in Huntington a daughter of Okley and Mettie Billups Chapman of Mount Sterling, Ohio. She was an employee of Marshall University where she worked in the Bursar’s Office. She attended Barboursville Baptist Church where she was secretary and treasurer of the Sisters Caring and Sharing Circle, secretary of the Order of Eastern Star #95, Barboursville, whose members conducted Eastern Star services. She is also survived by her husband, Ronnie Bills; two daughters and sons-in-law, Toni and Keith Ferguson of Huntington and Jessica and Erick Cline of Lexingtom Ky.; one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Chuck Carter of Washington Court House, Ohio; three grandchildren, Tiffany McMaster, Hunter Ferguson and Mason Ferguson; special best friends, Cathy and Randy Tye of Barboursville, Pat and Rick Berkes of Mount Vernon Ohio, and Nicole Scarberry of Huntington; and a host of friends, nieces and nephews.

Dimple Mae Robinson Hall, 66, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 26, 2002 in St. Mary’s Hospital. She was born March 8, 1936, in Mason County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Marion Ashbell and Katherine H. Logan Robinson. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Marion “Ash” Robinson Jr. Dimple had many dedicated years of service as a supervisor for Morris Memorial Nursing Home. She was a member of Evergreen Hills Baptist Church. She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Bobbie L. Linda Lou Lucas Hoover
Linda Lou Lucas Hoover, 51, of Ona, was peacefully and suddenly called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 25, 2002, while on her way to church. She was born September 28, 1950, at West Hamlin, W.Va, a daughter of Nada Lucas of Ona and the late Roger Clifford Lucas. Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, August 29, 2002 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Milton with the Rev. Carl Merritt officiating. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery at Salt Rock. She graduated from Guyan Valley High School and earned her Regency Degree of Bachelor of Arts from Marshall University. She was an active member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church of Milton and an instructor with the Carver Career and Technical Education Center near Charleston, W.Va. Additional survivors include her husband, Ronnie Dale Hoover; two daughters, Cathy Adkins Boling of Ona and Jessica Adkins at home; two sisters, Jeannie Boyer Grieco of Salt Rock and Brenda Lucas of Ona; two stepdaughters, Angel and Jessica Hoover, both of Huntington; one grandson, whom she loved dearly, Zachary “Zachie” Boling; one special nephew, Justin Allen Boyer of Ona; several cousins; one special friend, Lou Lusher-Hall; her precious dog Cotton, whom she considered part of the family and a host of other friends. Irene Chapman Kimble, 83, of Milton W.Va, died Sunday, August 25, 2002, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 29, 2002 at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, WV, by the Rev. Ray Sovine. Interment
in Staten Chapel Cemetery. Irene was a lifetime resident of Milton. She was born February 22, 1919, in Mason County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Al B. and Ellie Leadman Chapman. She was preceded in death by her husband William K. Kimble. Irene is survived by four sons, William M., Carl B., Curtis C. and Warren A. Kimble, all of Milton; one daughter, Treva Baker of Milton; four grandsons, Casey B. Kimble of Fraziers Bottom, Joe Kimble, Perry D. Baker and Christopher Kimble, all of Milton; four granddaughters, Cherry Weikle, Carley, Millicent and Jodie Kimble of Milton; two great-grandchildren, William J. Rev. Edward Eugene Ranson
The Rev. Edward Eugene Ranson, 59, of Douglas, Ga., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., died Monday, August 26, 2002 in Douglas. Survivors include his wife, Susan Archer Ranson; a daughter, Andrea Bassett of Douglas; his mother, Thelma Ranson of Huntington; a brother, Phillip Ranson and a sister, Lynette Boyes, both of Huntington. Richard Sullivan
Richard Sullivan, 82, of Barboursville, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord August 26, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Bill Cassady and Pastor Brad Toney. Burial in Swann Cemetery. He was born March 29, 1920, in Huntington, a son of the late Ben and Doshie Adams Sullivan. He was a retired employee of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by one son, Denny Sullivan. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jewell Johnson Sullivan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Judy and Keith Shelton and Margie Sullivan all of Barboursville; one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Jackie Sullivan of Huntington; three grandchildren, Shawn Sullivan of Barboursville, Kristy Altizer and her husband Todd of Columbus, Ohio, and Jon Shelton of Barboursville; one great-grandson, Adam Altizer; and one daughter-in-law, Donna Sullivan.
