Jane Elsie Jones, 84, of Hurricane died September 29, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a retired registered nurse from Wilmington (Delaware) General Hospital with 15 years of service and was a former 50-year resident of Wilmington. She received her nurse’s training from Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia and was a 1937 graduate of Hazleton High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. Jones.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Terry J. and Jack Hayslett of Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Roger L. Sr and Louise Jones of Newark, Delaware; brother, Raymond L. Williams of Pine Grove, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Andrew Lee Hayslett, Roger Lee Jones Jr., Felicia Jones, and Jessica Williams; personal companion, Deloris Jones of Hurricane.
Graveside service was held Thursday, October 3, 2002, at Forest Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Milton, with James McGehee officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, 202 12th Street, Dunbar WV 25064.
Alta I. Dodson
Alta I. Dodson, 66, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 14, at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born Aug. 6, 1936, a daughter of the late Elba and Osie Martin Chapman, and was also preceded in death by her sister, Eva Clagg, two brothers, Everett Chapman and Glenn Chapman and an infant grandson. Mrs. Dodson was a member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by her husband, Bernie Dodson; daughter and son-in-law, Kathi and Roger Wilcox of Rural Hall, N.C.; one brother, Emzy Chapman; four sisters, Clarice Chapman, Doris Moore of Cuba, Ala., Muriel Furkey of New Smyrna, Fla., and Joyce Thomas. Albert Ray “Buddy” Legg, 49, of Milton, WV, passed away October 11, 2002, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 14, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Steve Nida, the Rev. Kim Stone and the Rev. Lewis Combs. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Dec. 21, 1952, in Huntington, a son of the late Albert and Myrtle Neal Legg. He was a retired nurse from HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam War, an Eagle Scout and was of the Baptist faith. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Helen A. Simmons. Homer Bartram, 77, of Huntington passed away at home Saturday, Oct. 12. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 14, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Buddy Smith. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. He was born July 12, 1925, in Wayne County, a son of the late Richard and Vera Adkins Bartram. He was a retired brick layer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Cremeans Bartram; four brothers Albert, Desmon, Lee and Dallas Bartram; and one sister, Carrie Adkins. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Robbie Adkins of Huntington; several nieces and nephews; and his special buddies, Sassy, Babe and Gizmo. Forrest Michael “Smitty” Smith, 49, of Barboursville died, October 13, 2002. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct 15, 2002 by the Rev. Ralph Sager and the Rev. Billy Joe Wallace
Billy Joe Wallace, 70, of Milton passed away Friday, Oct. 11. at his residence. By his own request no services were observed. He was born July 24, 1932, a son of the late Dewey and Frances Lykins Wallace. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Lola Holley and one brother, Peter C. Wallace. Mr. Wallace served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a long-time member of the American Legion Post 139. He was also a member of several local organizations as well as the founder of the Village Inn and Wallace Excavating and Pool Service, Milton. Haskel Jarrell Sargent
Haskel Jarrell Sargent, MSgt., retired USAF, of Milton slipped into eternal peace Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002 at his home. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, October 2, 2002, at Milton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Keith Leap officiating, Dr. William Deel assisting and judge David M. Pancake reading the eulogy. Burial in Forest Memorial Park Milton. Full military graveside rites were presented by the honor guard of Wright Patterson Air Force Base.He was born August 28, 1937, in Milton, a son of the late Russell and Nancy Adkins Sargent. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Austin “Whitey”, Bill and Leon; two sisters, Tincy Clark and Rita Nichols. Jarrell so proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 21-1/2 years, serving in Vietnam, Germany, and other tours of duty. He received numerous medals of honor. Later, he retired from the State of WV Public Service Commission and President of Heritage Lanes in Milton. He served 3-1/2 terms as mayor of Milton, also City Recorder and Council Member; President of Lower Mud River Watershed Project; member of Milton Rotary, past President of Milton Lions Club; Commander of Milton Legion Post #139; member of Milton Chapter, EOS; member of Masonic Lodge and other civic organizations. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his loving children, Arden and Cindy Sargent of Hurricane, Robert “Bob” Sargent of Milton, Mary Virginia Gibson and Donnie of Lesage, Amber and Jon Midkiff of Lexington, KY, and Gerry Clagg of Culloden; 10 wonderful grandchildren that he dearly loved, Dylan, Erika, Marissa, Kassie, Alex, Breanna, Cheyenne, Cobi, Janessa, and Jon Caleb; a special extended family, Lhiza and Steve Simms of Milton; five brothers, Leo and Mary Jean of Salem, twin brother, Darrell of Milton; Don and Jean of Tampa, Fla., Jack and Patrick both of Milton; one sister, Lorena of Huntington; host of nieces and nephews; his special “Buttons”. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane, a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Hurricane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lillard R. Gibson, brother, Roy Leadmon, and parents, Clayton and Vivian Sovine Leadmon. She is also survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Charles Childers of Milton, Paula Roach of Winfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Coneda Gibson of Hurricane, David R.
