Florence Yocum
Florence Sevy Yocum of Scott Depot died November 19, 2002, at the age of 77.
She was born November 23, 2002 in United, the daughrer of the late C.O. and Josephine Echols Sevy. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot, and also attended Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Stony Bottom, during the summers. She served as postmitress and store cler in Kayford and then worked for the united States Navy, Norfolk, Virginia, during World War II.
She retired as comptroller from the Department of Culture and History for the state of West Virginia. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 101, Chelyan. Since retirement, she and her husband have spent their summers camping in Stony Bottom and winters in Scott Depot.
Surviving: husband, Dexter “Tab” Yocum Jr.; daughter, Donna Yocum Burchett of Houston, Texas; sister, Olive Caldwell Cagle of Augusta, Georgia; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Friday, November 22, 2002, at St. John United Methodist Church with Dr. Martin H. Hallett and the Rev. Ronald Scott officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 4013 Teays Valley Road, Scott Depot WV 25560 or Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Stony Bottom, Cass WV 24927.

Nellie C. Clark
Mrs. Nellie C. Underwood Clark, 43, of Milton died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital.
She was a one-year resident of Milton, formerly of Ona, Culloden and Bancroft. She was an employee of Rich Oil in Milton.
Surviving: husband, Greg Clark; daughter, Jessie Clark with the U.S. Air Force in Dover, Delaware; sons, Dannuy Clark of North Carolina and Dale clark at home; mother, Patsy Hill of Bancroft; father and stepmother, Jack and Shirley Underwood Sr. of St. Albans; sisters, Chaeryl Thaxton of Sissonville, Kim Rucker of Charleston and Anita Caruthers of Poca; brothers, Joey Hill of Quantico, Virginia and Jack Underwood Jr. of Bancroft; maternal grandfather, Ivan Cobb of Hometown.
Service was held Saturday, November 23, 2002, at Gatens Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy Cobb officiating. Burial was in Barnett Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Leara E. Flora
Leara E. Flora, 81, of Hurricane died November 11, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Sycamore Independent Missionary Baptist Church and was a lifelong resident of the Hurricane area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oakley B. Flora.
Surviving: son, Larry Flora of Hurricane; daughter, Dianna Skaggs of Hurricane; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; special friends, Tammy Smith and Jane Duke.
Service was held Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Clifford McKay officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Hazel A. Persinger
Hazel A. Persinger, 98, of Poca died November 10, 2002, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Pt. Pleasant.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a member of Hometown Senior Citizens and Black Betsy United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Persinger, and three sons, Robert, Ralph and Clyde.
Surviving: daughters, Reba Tucker of Pliny, Helen Jett of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Rosalie Perkins of Oregon, Ohio; son, Charles Persinger of Culloden; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at Black Betsy Community Church with Pastor Carl Arthur officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Elouise F. Wolf
Elouise F. Wolf, 64, of Leon died November 10, 2002, at home following a short illness.
She was a retired cook from the Kanawha County School Board, where she was the head cook at Cross Lanes Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Dorothy Menninger Null.
Surviving: husband, Kermit Wolf; sons, Jeff Wolf of Cross Lanes and Steve Wolf of Leon; brothers, Delano Null of Van Buren, Arkansas, Fravel Null of Paden City, and David Null of Cross Lanes; grandsons, Tyler and Jarrod Wolfe of Charleston.
Service was held Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Pete Cobb officiating. Burial was in Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg.

Avner H. Backus
Avner H. Backus, 95, of Fraziers Bottom died November 7, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital following an extended illness.
He was a retired farmer and of the Baptist faith. He was born February 9, 1907 at Vaughn, West Virginia, son of the late John and Betty Foster Backus. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Madeline Backus.
Surviving: daughters, Annie Cole of Chimney Corner, Daisy Backus of Fraziers Bottom, and Ruby Elkins of Belva; son, Robert Backus of Elyria, Ohio; special granddaughter, Pam Backus; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
Graveside serivce was held Sunday, November 10, 2002, at Vaughan Cemetery, Vaughan, with the Rev. Billy Foster officiating. Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie B. Ryan
Jessie B. Ryan, 100, of Hurricane, formerly of Alkol, died November 12, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
She was a homemaker and member of Sycamore Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Izola Meadows.
Surviving: daughters and son-in-law, Louise Griffith of Alkol, Judy and Rudy Priestley of Hurricane; son and daughter-in-law, Robert D. Jr. and Sue Ryan of Scott Depot; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, November 15, 2002, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with the Rev. Paul Meadows officiating. Buirial was in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.

Mary Roush
Mary McKinney Roush, 79, of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Winfield and Orlando, Florida, died November 12, 2002, in Richfield Recovery and Care Center, Salem, Virginia.
She was a member of Winfield Baptist Church and was retired from the Putnam County Board of Education with 20 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence A. Roush, in 1981.
Surviving: daughter, Dixie Lee Roush Chittum of Roanoke; sons, Clarence Anthony Roush of Salem, Virginia and Thomas Frederick Roush of Rocky Mount, Virginia; grandchildren, Anna Marie Deering of Waynesboro, Virginia, Shane Anthony Roush and Cheyenne Turner, both of Salem, Virginia; great-granddaughter, Gabriela Marie Deering of Waynesboro.
Service was held Friday, November 15, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Ken Toler officiaitng. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Charles R. Henry
Charles Robert Henry, 68, of Hurricane died November 12, 2002.
He was buried in Grafton National Cemetery. Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary, Huntington was in charge of arrangements.

Harold C. Fewell
Harold C. Fewell, 74, of Winfield died November 13, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was a member of Winfield United Methodist Church and was retired from Union Oil and Gas, Winfield. He was owner/operator of the Fewell Texaco and formerly employed with the Air National Guard, Charleston. He was a great supporter and former coach/manager of various Winfield Little League baseball teams and girl’s softball teams. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served in Korea.
Surviving: wife, Charlotte Fewell; children, Jane and Thomas Workman of Winfield, Harold II”Pete” and Carol Fewell of Longmont, Colorado, Carl “Rob” and Marcy Fewell of Winfield; grandchildren, Tami and Ryan Brown of Centennial, Colorado, Shawn and Jennifer Fewell of Denver, Colorado, and Whitney Fewell of Winfield; great-grandchildren, Lindsay and Megan Brown of Centennial and Kayla Fewell of Denver; sisters, Betty Moore of Winfield and Ruth Naylor of Hurricane; brothers, Ray Fewell and Nathan Fewell, both of Winfield.
Service was held Saturday, November 16, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Morgan Peterson officiating. Burial was in Mount Union United Methodist Church Cemetery, Pliny. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1200 Quarrier Street, Charleston WV 25301.

Geraldine Raynes
Geranldine “Gerry” Raynes, 65, of Poca died November 13, 2002, in CAMC General Hospital.
She was retired from Diehl’s Restaurant, Nitro, with 37 years of served and attended Mount Union United Methosit Church, Pliny.
She was born May 20, 2002 in Pliny, a daughter of the late Huber and Evelyn Bowcott Wears, and was a 25 year resident of Poca. She graduated from Pt. Pleasant High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Mac Raynes, and sisters, Pansy Wears and Audry Young.
Surviving: daughter, Carla Gale Stewart of Hurricane; sons, Brent Allen Raynes of Poca and Todd Eric Raynes of Nitro; sisters, Jewell Scites and Fern O’Neil, both of Pt. Pleasant, Freda Rawlings of Pensacola, Florida, Irene Sanders and Doris Boster, both of Nitro, and Nina Wright of Winfield; brothers, Weldon Wears and Jack Wears, both of Pliny; grandchildren, Erica Nicole Stewart and Kobe Nicholas Stewart.
Service was held Sunday, November 17, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home., Teays Valley, with the Rev. Richard Work officiating. Burial was in Mount Union Methodist Church Cemtery, Pliny.

Georgia Farrell
Georgia Viola Imes Farrell, 84, of Scott Depot died November 16, 2002, at Putnam SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, after a long illness.
She was a member of Teays Valley Church of God, a homemaker, and a lifelong resident of Scott Depot.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John W. and Mary Alice Imes, her husband, Arthur F. Farrell Sr., and a daughter, Jo Ann Farrell.
Surviving: daughters, Kay F. Lee of Poca, Joyce A. mcCallister and Pjyllis J. Stowers, both of Scott Depot; son, Arthur F. “Frankie” Farrell Jr. of Hurricane; sister, Arvena Palmer of Riverside, California; grandchildren, Dr. Paul Lee, Mary Lee, John Farrell, Angela Tanner, Jeff McCallister, Melinda McCallister, Melanie Lanham and Joshua Rader; great-grandchildren, Heather Elder, Rachel Lee, Rebecca Lee, Abigail Lee, Michael Lanham and Aiden McCallister.
Service was held Tuesday, November 19, 2002, at Teays Valley Church of God with the Rev. Ben Franklin and the Rev. Ken Toler officiating. Burial was in Teays Valley Memorial Gardens. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Alma Elizabeth Morrison
Alma Elizabeth Morrison, 92, of Huntington, widow of Basil Gerard Morrison, went to her heavenly reward Saturday, November 16, 2002 while surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 9, 1910, in Nebraska, a daughter of the late Friend and Virginia Leap, and moved to a dairy farm on Grapevine Road soon thereafter, where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood with her parents and eight siblings. She was married on January 2, 1934, to Basil, and they enjoyed 43 bountiful years together. She lived in Huntington the vast majority of her adult life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Basil; sisters Natala Deaver, Pauline Carroll, Myrtle Brammer; brothers, Foster Leap, Ivan Leap, Harmon Leap, Paul Leap; and granddaughter, Beth Richards. She is survived by sisters, Iris Seeling of Geery, NY and Kathryn Hutson of West Palm Beach, Fla.; one son, Dr. J.D. Morrison and wife Ann of Seaford, Va.; and one daughter, Sandra Gayle Damron of Huntington; grandchildren Dr. Tim Damron and his wife Becky of Barboursville, Scott Damron, Esq., and wife Tammy of Huntington, Mark Damron of Huntington, Kristie Nease and husband Dr. Robert Nease of Huntington, Debra Eysmans of Florida, Susan Little and husband Garrett of Florida, Sara Pickens and husband Rod of Maryland, as well as 18, soon to be 19, great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, DiAnn Willis. A homemaker, Alma was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church and a member of the Winsome Bible Class for many years.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Ed Grant officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Dr. Tim Damron, Scott Damron, Esq., Mark Damron and Dr. Robert Nease. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Inn at Wyngate for the exceptional and loving care they provided Alma during her residence there.

Lloyd Darren Bledsoe
Lloyd Darren Bledsoe, 36, of Salt Rock died Friday, November 15, 2002. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. Burial in Enon Cemetery. He was born October 21, 1966, in Huntington a son of Shirley Rae Lambert Bledsoe of Salt Rock and the late Lloyd Darrell Bledsoe. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Gail Lambert of Point Pleasant; one sister, Crystal Dawn Whitt of Milton; two nieces, Elaina Marie Lambert and Brittany Sue Lambert; two nephews, Steven Dean Lambert and Christopher Cleon Whitt.

David Lee Ross
David Lee Ross, 57, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2002, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 20, 2002. at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Swann Cemetery. He was born April 23, 1945, in Cabell County, a son of the late Lear and Velva Nicholas Ross. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lina Farley and Darlene Ross. He is survived by one daughter, Stephanie Julian of Chesapeake, Ohio; one son, John David Ross of Huntington; five sisters, Carol Jeffrey of Ashland, Ky., Joyce Walker and Dottie Gue, both of Barboursville, Priscilla Burd of Huntington and Mary Ann Browning of East Lynn; one brother, Lear Ross Jr. of Orland, Calif.; five grandchildren, Zachary, Jonathan, Christopher, Jared and Haley; several nieces and nephews and several special friends, including Bill Clay, Scott Call and Rick Keaton.

Delma I. Adkins
Delma I. Adkins, 92, of Huntington, WV, widow of Boyd Adkins, died Saturday, November l6, 2002 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was a homemaker. Survivors include: two daughters Phyllis Jean Adkins and Frances Bartrum both of Huntington; one granddaughter Dena Bartrum of Huntington; and one sister-in-law Alma Cremeens of Milton, WV. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday November 19, 2002 at Ferrell Funeral Home with Rev. Lionel Mees officiating. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Huntington.
