Mary “Marvene” Mason
Mary “Marvene” Mason, 89, of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral Services were conducted Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Warren Dean officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born April 14, 1913, a daughter of the late Aaron and Virginia McMellon Mason. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, Charlie Baumgardner; sister, Ruby Cooper and brother, Forrest Mason. Marvene was a retired school teacher with the Cabell County Board of Education. She taught at Wildcat one-room school, as well as Barboursville Elementary. She is survived by her niece, Betty Mason Collins; great-nephew, Rick Collins and great-niece, Laura Heizer.
Opal Scarberry Edmunds
Opal Scarberry Edmunds, 72, of Lesage, W.Va, left this life on Monday, December 10, 2002, to join her loved ones in Heaven who preceded her. Services were held on Friday at 2 pm at Woodmere Memorial Park Mausoleum with Pastor Larry Hedrick officiating. Burial followed. She was born March 16,1930, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Irvin and Callie McKinley Scarberry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Worlie Edmunds; a daughter, Linda Edmonds Burnett; three brothers, Ralph, Randall and Paul D. Scarberry and also, three half brothers, Clyde, Clarence and Arden R. Brooks. Opal attended Guyandotte Elementary School, Enslow Junior High and graduated from Huntington East High School. She attended many churches in the area and considered Thomas Memorial Free Will Baptist Church her church home. She leaves behind a son, Danny D. Edmonds of Lesage, W Va, three grandchildren, Brooke Edmunds, Patrick Ryan Edmunds and Shawn D. Burnett all of Huntington; a sister, Barbara Stewart, and a brother, Granville L Scarberry both of Huntington. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Timothy Salmons, 83, of Huntington, died Sunday, December 8, 2002 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 13, 2002, at the Webb Community Church, Webb, WV. Burial in Webb Cemetery. He was born September 8, 1919, at Drag Creek, WV, a son of the late Roland and Nancy Bates Salmons. He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Gill and Connie Stephens, and one son, Timothy “Ronnie” Salmons, all of Lexington, Ky; one brother, Jesse L. Salmons of Perry, Fla.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and a special niece, Linda Marcum and her husband Paul of Culloden. Helen Irene Johnson
Helen Irene Johnson, 75, of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 10, 2002, peacefully at her residence. Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2002, at Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Davis and Minister Pete Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Helen was born February 21, 1927, in Huntington W.Va, a daughter of the late Earl and Gillie Hayes Mount. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ernest Mount. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and very active in her Sunday School Class. She is survived by her loving husband, Thurman Johnson; four sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Connie of Hurricane, Steve and Faith of Ona, Marty and Frances of Barboursville, Craig and Jean Ann of Barboursville; one daughter, Donna Evans of Beckley, one stepdaughter, Bobbie Spencer, four sisters and three brothers, Garnett Martin of Ona, Everett Mount of Culloden, Louise Altop of Columbus, Ohio, Anna Lee Mount of Ona, Paul Mount of Gary, Ind., Frank Mount of Huntington, and Jean Chaffin of Hurricane; 17 grandchildren, Anissa Dunbar, Nikki Watts, Randi Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Michelle White, Cheri Call, Kelli Newsome, Adam Johnson, Evan Johnson, Adria Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Derek Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Josh Evans, Zack Evans, Alyssa Evans, and Leanne Spencer; eight great-grandchildren Mikyle White, Austin Morrison, Ethan Todd, Kelsie Call, Christia Watts, Jordan Watts, Bryce Watts, Shaylen Dunbar; special friend, Marilyn Kirby; and a host of nieces, nephew, family and friends. Harold Clyde “Punk” Beckett, 82, of Milton passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at Sunbridge Care and Rehab. Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 13, 2002 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Winford Curry. Burial in Enon Cemetery. He was born April 14, 1920, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Bracey Beckett and Georgia Keenan Beckett. He was a retired employee from INCO, where he had the nickname, “Sparky.” He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Lois Spencer Beckett, and one son, Richard Dale Beckett. He is survived by one brother, Harry Beckett of Milton; two grandsons, Richard Shaun Beckett of Milton and Jonathan Dale Beckett of Barboursville; a daughter-in-law, Natalie Beckett Adkins of Barboursville; and a niece, Ann Hatfield. Richard C. Black
Richard C. Black, 73, of Ona, died Monday, December 9, 2002, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 12, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Richard Black. Burial in Maupin Cemetery. He was born May 29, 1929, in Cabell County, a son of the late James Albert and Bertha McCallister Black. He was also preceded in death by his with Ruby Carpenter Black. He was a retired truck driver with Smith Transfer and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean conflict. He is survived by two daughters, Dreama Black and Scarlet Penney Black, both of Charleston; one son, Elza “Butch” Black of Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va., with whom he made his home; three sisters, Nina Midkiff and Della Childers, both of Ona, and Myrtle Terry of Milton; two brothers, Shelby H. Black of Milton and Alonzo Black of Ona; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Military graveside rites were conducted by the VFW Post 9738, Huntington.
Billy Ray Arnold
Billy Ray Arnold, 66, of Hertford, North Carolina, formerly of Hurricane, died Saturday, November 30, 2002, at his residence.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of serivce as a hull technician chief, and also retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 20 years of service as a project manager. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Bayside Masonic Lodge No. 3218, Virginia Beach, and VFW Post No. 097, Fleet Reserve.
He was preceded in dath by his parents, Leonard and Agnes Spurlock Arnold.
Surviving: wife, Evelyn Marie Alford Arnold; daughters, Kimberly Lynn Revels of Portsmouth, Virginia and Karen Denise Clark of Hertford; sons, Daren Ray Arnold of Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Robert Paul Frasher Jr. of Hampton, Virginia; brothers, Bobby Lee Arnold of Hurricane and Leon Arnold of Chilicothe, Ohio; five grandhildren.
Service was held Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Charles Norris officiating. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery, Hurricane, with military graveside rites conducted by Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 and Masonic graveside rites conducted by Putnam Masonic Lodge No. 139 AF&AM, Hurricane.
Mildred M. Perry
Mildred Margaret “Mickey” Perry, 78, of Scott Depot died December 1, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Teays Valley Church of God, Scott Depot. She was vice president of Teays Valley Hardware and Building Co., Inc., a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Scott Depot.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cressie “Dickie” Racer, stepfather, Charles D. “Dot” Racer, and son-in-law, Charles Bogle.
Surviving: husband of 60 years, B.A. “Bill” Perry; daughters, Bonnie Bogle of Scott Depot and Brenda Thomas of Hurricane; grandchildren, Brad, Kara and Travis Bogle, Summer and Autumn Thomas; great-grandchildren, Krystell, Hunter and Nichole Bogle.
Service was held Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Ken Toler and Dr. Rod Taylor officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.
Peggy L. McCullough
Peggy Lou Trail McCullough died Dedember 4, 2002, a thome after an extended strugle with lung cancer.
She was a charter member of The Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane, where she was a member of the choir and also very active in the Community Cupboard, We Care-We Share and other charitable activities.
She was formerly employed as a secretary by Appalachian Power, Union Carbide Technical Center and the City of Orange, Texas. A graduate of Marshall University with an associate degree in secretCourier science, she was a member of Sigma Sigman Sigma Sorority, president of Alpha Lambda Delta Freshman Women’s Honorary and copy editor of the Chief Justice yearbook. She was a graduate of East Bank High School, where she was a active in a variety of scholastic activities.
She was preceded in death by her son, Shaun Michael McCullough, and her parents, Chester and Helen Trail.
Surviving: husband, Robert F. McCullough; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jean and Paul Arbuckle of Charleston; sister-in-law and husband, Richard and Alberta McCullough Carlson of Denver, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Jeanne McCullough of Tucson, Arizona, Loretta McCullough of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania; 20 nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 7, 2002, at The Catholic Church of the Ascension with Father Neil Buchlein, Father Paul Wharton and Father Laurence Wrenn officiaitng. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Carolyn Yvonne Bird, 46, of Hurricane, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2002 in Holzer Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted Monday, December 9, in Milton Cemetery. She was born November 29, 1956, a daughter of Minor Moore and the late Mary Evelyn Templeton Moore. She was also preceded in death by her son, Travis Yates. Ethel Adair Justice Ashworth
Ethel Adair Justice Ashworth, 76, of Culloden, wife of Jerry Clinton Ashworth passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in Sunbridge of Putnam. Graveside funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Sanctuary of Faith, Cross Lanes, W.Va, with Ray Sovine officiating. Entombment followed in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. She was born May 18,1926, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Ora Estill and June Prince Justice. She was a member of the First Church of God, Hurricane, W.Va., and a veteran serving with the WAVES in World War II. Additional survivors include a daughter, Pamela Gail Smith of Milton, W.Va.; two stepdaughters Jerry Lynn Traylor of Ann Arbor, Mich, and Cheryl Burns of Detroit; two adopted sons, John and Larry Ashworth, both of Detroit; two brothers, Rudolph Justice of Ashland and Donald Justice of Cass, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Charles Weldon Jordan, 92, of Ashton went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec, 5, 2002, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. He was born March 1, 1910, a son of the late Henry and Nora Gibson Jordan. He also was preceded in death by his son, John Clinton Jordan, and his daughter, Bonnie Jordan. He was retired from Conner Steel. Calvin Darrell Austin, 66, of Barboursville, W.Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday, December 1, 2002 at his residence. Calvin was born June 8, 1936, in Kenova, W.Va., a son of the late John E. and Gusta Lambert Austin. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and CSX Transportation. He was a member of the Altizer Free Will Baptist and attended Camp Creek Free Will Baptist. He was preceded in death by an infant sister and his wife Joyce Ann Austin. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Charles Spears of Lavalette, W.Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Elizabeth Austin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Marie Crawford of Catlettsburg, Ky., Juanita Wheeler of Louisa, Ky., Alberta Mathews of Georgetown, Ky., and Gypsy Christian of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Clifford Austin of Prestonsburg, Ky.; four grandchildren, Wendy Holley and Hannah Spears, both of Lavalette, William and Emily Austin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Lantz Holley of Lavalette; and Calvin’s fiancee, Thelma Laferty of Prestonsburg, Ky. Eleanor Joyce Roe
Eleanor Joyce Roe, 77, of Huntington, passed away Dec. 3, 2002. Graveside services were conducted Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Christus Chapel Mausoleum by the Rev. Craig Coster. She was born June 23, 1925, in Washington, Ind., a daughter of the late James Thomas and Anise Geneva Fields Potts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin C. Roe. She is survived by two sisters, Alice Mary Paugh of Washington, Ind., and Virginia Davis of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and one brother, Steven James Potts of Washington, Ind. Beulah McCallister
Beulah Sovine McCallister, 92, of Hurricane died November 21, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She was a member of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oran McCallister, and her parents, Spurgeon and Zola Moore Sovine.
Surviving: daughters, Jo Ann Robertson of Bay Tree Lakes, North Carolina and Janet Fisher of Hurricane; granddaughter, Jill Robertson Grant of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; grandsons, Fred Fisher of Culloden, Jon Fisher of Winfield, Joe Fisher of Hurricane, Tom Fisher of Winfield, and Jeff Fisher of St. Albans; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Janet Lee White
Janet Lee White, 62, of Scott Depot, formerly of Whitesville and Racine areas of Boone County, died November 21, 2002, in CAMC Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.
She was born March 5, 1940 at Johns, a daughter of Mossie Mae Mullins Belcher Clendenin of Peytona and the late Arby Ray Belcher. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Clendenin and Phyllis Muncy, and a brother, Larry Belcher.
She was a member of Community Church of Teays Valley and a former secretary of WVU Medical School, Charleston. She was a graduate and salutatorian of her class at Sherman High School, Seth.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by husband, James R. White; daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Rick Davis of St. Albans; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. C.G. and Gay White of Columbus, Indiana; brother, Billy R. Belcher of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, James Christopher and Kevin Davis, Jason and Sarah White.
Service was held Monday, November 25, 2002, at Scott Depot Christ Fellowship with the Rev. Rodney Taylor and the Rev. David Bess officiating. Interment
was in Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, with the Rev. W. Howard Gwinn Jr. officiating. Armstrong Funeral Home, Whitesville, was in charge of arrangements.
Kyle Daniel Cavender
Kyle Daniel Cavender, 44, of Hurricane died November 22, 2002, at his resident after a sudden illness.
He was president of Dri-Power Products Inc. and was a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
Surviving: parents, Mr. and Mrs. K.B. Cavender of Hurricane; sisters and brother-in-law, Cathy J. Cavender, Kim and David Maxson, all of Hurricane; nieces, Kimberly Cavender and Kristin Maxson; nephew, Kyle Maxson.

Betty J. Wright
Betty J. Sigman King Wright, 73, of Poca died November 23, 2002, at home following a long illness.

Doris P. Thomas
Doris P. Thomas, 74, of Scott Depot died November 25, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a homemaker and formerly operated a kennel in California. She was a quilter and loved the outdoors and animals.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas, her parents, Otto and Ida Kelly Hanshaw, and sisters, Vivian Stephens and Wanda Casto.
Surviving: sister, Audrey Mullins of Scott Depot; brothers, Robert Hanshaw of Tyler Mountain, Darrel and Marion Hanshaw, both of Culloden; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Tyler mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Cross Lanes, with Pastor Richard Neal officiating. Burial was in the memory gardens. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
