John Hartley Long
John Hartley “Ock” Long, 83, of Hurricane died November 24, 2002, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.
He was born March 3, 1919 in Putnam County, son of the late John Wesley and Cora Mae Wallace Long. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Eunice Call Long, brothers, Harley and David Long, and sisters, Alpha Mae Call Wheeler, Carrie Hicks and Myrtle Davis.
He was a member of the CC Camp, Boise, Idaho, and was a military police officer during WW II, stationed in White Sulphur Springs and Germany. He retired with 38 years of service from C&O Railway shops in Barboursville. He was also a farmer and a lifelong resident of Teays Valley.
Surviving: special nephew, W.H. Huel Call of Hurricane; special nephew and caregiver, Harvey Long Jr. of Institute; sisters-in-law, Josephine Long, Elaine Long, Dorothy King and Mildred Call; brother-in-law, Ross Call; several additional nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
Service was held Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Richard L. Black officiating. Burial was in the Long family Cemetery, located on the homeplace on Poplar Fork Road.
Wanda M. Martin
Wanda M. Martin, 84, of Buffalo died November 24, 2002, in Pleasant Valley Nursing Home after a extended illness.
Mrs. Martin was born in Jackson County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dewey S. Fisher Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil W. Martin, four infant children, two grandchildren and one brother.
She was a lifelong and oldest living member of Otter Branch United Methodist Church on 18 Mile Creek Road in Buffalo, where she was a very active and devoted Christian.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Bennett Rawlins of Pt. Pleasant, Rosetta and Herman Higginbotham of Grove City, Ohio, Pearl and Wendell Craig of Carroll, Ohio, Patricia and Butch Burdette, Karen and Tommy Stover of Buffalo; son, William G. Martin of Buffalo; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Beller, Hazel Martin, Roxie Stone and Sue Fisher; brothers, Dewey Fisher Jr. and Robert Fisher.
Service was held Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Otter Branch United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Tucker and Pastor Harry Adkins officiating. Burial was in Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
Ada Marie Terry
Ada Marie Terry, 84, of Poca died November 25, 2002, at the home of her caregiver, Brenda Butcher, after a long illness.
She was a retired riverboat cook for AEP.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Terry.
Surviving: nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Tyler mountain Funeral Home, Cross Lanes, with Pastor Chris Shinn officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.

Donald E. Collins, 56, of Culloden died November 25, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital.

Murrel C. Call
Murrel C. “Squirrel” Call, 69, of Winfield died November 27, 2002, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Winfield and was a former concrete finisher.

Helen R. Clark
Helen R. Clark, 86, of Hurricane died Wednesday, November 27, 2002, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving: brothers, Cifford Clark and Norris Clark, both of Culloden, and Richard Clark of Hurricane; sister, Ina Mae Morrison of Hurricane.
Service was held Saturday, November 30, 2002, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim Baker officiating. Burial was in Culloden Cemetery.
Charles Louis Allen Sr.
Charles Louis Allen Sr., 81, of Scott Depot died Thursday, November 28, 2002, at his residence.
Lou was a self-employed electronic technician and a veteran of the United States Army. He received a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II with 100 percent disability.
Surviving: wife of 60 years, Viloris; daughter, Cheryl Turley of Teays Valley; sons, Charles Louis Allen II of Hurricane and David Allen of Belvidere, Illinois; sisters, Betty Wolfskill of Elkins and Phyllis Surface of Walton; brother, Bill Allen of Cross Lanes; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Leona Audren Buck
Leona Audren Buck, 86, of Leon died November 28, 2002, in Glenwood Park Mehtodist Home, Princeton, after an extended illness.
Born August 7, 1916 in Nat, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Lucy Sayre Riffle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clodus Buck, and sister, Dolly Riffle Upton.
She was a member of the Arbuckle Independent Church.
Surviving: sons, Clodus Burdell, Darrell, Ronald and Rodney “Butch” Buck of Leon, Fred Buck of Mount Olive, and Gary Buck of Rock Springs, Ohio; daughters, Barbara Barnette of Rick Castle, Carolyn Ilean Hurst and Karen Buck of Lashmeet; sister, Ada Henson of Columbus, Ohio; brothers, Lee Riffle of Columbus and Lewis Edgar Riffle of Nitro; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Nell Vera Gott
Nell Vera Cooper Gott, 86, of Poca died November 29, 2002.
She was born November 3, 1916 to Earle Henry and Erma Meredith DeWolfe Cooper at Omar. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Earl E. Gott.
She was a graduate of Nitro High School, West Virginia State College and Marshall University. She was a retired teacher from Putnam County schools, teaching two years at Lanham and 27 years at Poca Elementary. She received the 1975 Teacher of the Year award. She was a member of Eastern Star, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, WVEA, NEA, Good Sam’s Camping Club and Pitch and Pull Cambping Club.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Judy Gott of Alexandria, Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Sue Ann and Ed Null of Poca; granddaughters, Melissa Gott Benoit of Alexandra, Louisiana, and Casi Null of Poca; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Meredith Lucas and Everett Tucker of Poca; great-grandchildren, Everett L. Tucker III, B.J. Benoit, and Melanee A. Tucker; sister, Connie Whittington of Nitro.
Service was held Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at Gatrens Funeral Home Chapel, Poca. Entombment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Mildred Marie Ross
Mildred Marie Ross of Southside, formerly of Parkersburg, died November 30, 2002, at her residence.
She was a member of Winfield Baptist Church, was a homemaker and an 11-year resident of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Ross; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Full; and her sister, Lillian M. Delaney.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Sonya and Scott Burdette of Southside; brother, John Full of Cocoa Beach, Florida; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at Evergreen Cemetery, Parkersburg, with Pastor Bill Angel officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements. Mitchell Odell Vickers, 44, of Barboursville passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002. Memorial services were conducted at Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville. He was born June 20, 1958, in Florida, a son of the late Hurston Vickers and Lillian Woods Gibson. He is survived by his stepfather, Raymond Gibson of Barboursville; one son Chris Vickers of Barboursville; two sisters, Lou Ann Martin of Barboursville and Sandra Carey-Neal of Huntington; one brother, Frank Vickers and half-brother, Joe Woods, both of Huntington; and two grandchildren.

B. Darrell “Doc” Chaney, 67, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, while visiting in Rock Hill, S.C. Interment
in Culloden Cemetery, Culloden. He was an employee of the Operating Engineers Union. He was born May 22, 1935, in Hurricane, W.Va, a son of the late Bernie F. and Arilla Gibson Chaney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Wayne Chaney. He is survived by his son, Michael D. Chaney; one brother, Joe F. Denvil Lee Davis, 69, of Milton passed away Friday Nov. 29 2002, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Winford Curry officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born Nov. 26, 1933, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of the late Milford and Maggie Davis. He also was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Davis and his sister, Dorothy Washington. He was a retired blacksmith for Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Betty Davis; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Lee and Debra Davis of Milton; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Merrill Reynolds, Janet and Larry Venoy and Shelia and Ed Cain, all of Milton; three brothers, Delbert Davis of Troy, Ohio and Emzie Davis and Richard Davis, both of Milton; four sisters, Hazel Foster of Durham, N.C., Emily Goode and Pauline Bruner, both of Troy, Ohio and Helen Carpenter of Barboursville, W.Va.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Walter “Okey” Hysell
Walter “Okey” Hysell, 69, of Milton died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002. Graveside services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 in the Milton Cemetery by the Rev. Cleo Egnor. He was born Jan. 29, 1933, in Milton, a son of the late Buster and Ella Harshbarger Hysell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Pansy Chapman Hysell and his son, Walter Hysell Jr. He was a gravedigger for many years, taking care of the local funeral homes in the surrounding area. He is survived by one grandson, Kreggory Hysell and one granddaughter, Constance Hysell, both of Spotsylvania, Va.; one sister, Joyce Hayes of Ona, W.Va.; five brothers, Junior Odell Hysell of Cleveland, Mike Hysell of Culloden, W.Va., Richard Hysell, Andy Hysell and Darrell Hysell all of Milton; five half-sisters, Dreama Tackett and Karen Hicks, both of Huntington, Kay Hysell and Deven Clark, both of Ona and Ann Hand of South Carolina; and two half-brothers, Buster Owen Hysell and James Hysell, both of Milton. Robert Richard Shepherd
Robert Richard Shepherd, 77, of Newport News Va., formerly of Barboursville, left this world to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Rick Glass. Burial in Shepherd Family Cemetery. He was born March 5, 1925, in Barboursville, a son of the late Charles R. “Kute” Shepherd and Mary Alice Stewart Shepherd. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Minnie Woodard, and one brother, Randolph Shepherd, both of Richard was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving his country during World War II. For many years, Richard drove a truck for C.I. Witten and, after moving to Newport News, he worked as a carpenter and painter. Survivors include a daughter, Alice Kaye Combs and husband Bruce of Hurricane, W.Va.; a son Richard Lee Shepherd and wife Tammy of Ripplemead, Va.; three sisters, Frances Collins of Huntington and Loraine Chapman and Grace Mallow, both of Barboursville; four brothers, Norman, Frank, Freeman and Roger Shepherd, all of Barboursville; two granddaughters, Christian Combs and Nicole Shepherd, and two special friends, Bullet Bob and Joe, both of Newport News, Va.
Grace Wells Kyle
Grace Wells Kyle, 78, of Barboursville, wife of Jack F. Kyle, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Ernest and Helen Botkin Wells. She was a retired secretary from the psychology department and to the dean of the medical school at Marshall University. She was a member of Enslow Park Presbyterian Church and former member of the Civic League, Rotary Anns, Cotillion Club, Assembly Club, Guyan Country Club, Huntington Junior Women’s Club and long-time Ronald McDonald House volunteer. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Diane Kyle of Louisville, Ky., Joanne and Ben Brooks of Columbus, Ohio and Kathy and Steve Fisher of Huntington; one sister and brother-in-law, Marian and Heinz Praschkauer of Pittsburgh; and four grandchildren, Jason Brooks, Josh Brooks, Chad Fisher and Lori Fisher. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Enslow Park Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Niles officiating. Entombment in Woodmere Abbey of Peace, Huntington. William H. Carrier
William H. Carrier, 81, of Milton passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at his residence. A graveside funeral service was conducted Saturday, November 30, in Milton Cemetery. He was born October 9, 1921, a son of the late Solomon and Virginia Hendricks Carrier. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Estes Carrier. Mr. Carrier was a retired electrician for FMC Chemical Plant, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Jerry Buzzard of Milton, and two granddaughters, Jessica and Laura. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Huntington. Gladys Belle “Mom” Kingery
Gladys Belle “Mom” Kingery, 79, of Lesage went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 24, 2002, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at Barker Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Dailey officiating. Burial in Barker Ridge Cemetery. She was born May 7, 1923, in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Brown and Myrtie Taylor Stevens. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Raymond, one daughter, Janet Sophia, granddaughter Justina Marie Smith, sister Mildred Smith and four brothers Russ, Ralph, Paul and Cotton Stevens. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Donna Kingery, Dotsie “Jake” and Jerry Thompson, Dreama and Forrest Bailey, all of Lesage, and Dottie and Jim Scarberry of Ona; one son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Ruth Ann Kingery of Lesage; one brother, Brown Stevens Jr. of Huntington; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one special nephew, Charlie Smith; and two special friends, Scott Enix and Kyle Captain. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Tessie Frances Keesee Pratt
Tessie Frances Keesee Pratt, 82, of Huntington died Saturday, November 23, 2002, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, by the Rev. Steve Nida and the Rev. Sherwood Thompson. Burial in George Keesee Cemetery, Raccoon Creek Road. She was born on October 29, 1920, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late George and Rosa Harless Keesee. She was the owner of Pratt Hardware, Guyandotte. She was a member of Gethsemane United Baptist Church. She was on the Board of Directors of Southwestern Community Action Group, a member of the Pea Ridge Womans Club and helped found the Altizer Community Group and Carl Johnson Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judson Maxwell Pratt, one brother, Homer Keesee and one sister Bessie Kyle. She is survived by one daughter, Patricia Cromwell of Weirton W.Va.; one son, Maxwell Dale Pratt of Huntington; two sisters, Ruth Virginia Brock of Lesage and Sybil Adkins of Huntington; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
