Gladys Madge “Maw-Maw” Hicks
Gladys Madge “Maw-Maw” Hicks, 100, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Chateau Grove Care Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Henson Mortuary by Dr. Ed Grant and the Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in Highland Memory Gardens, South Point. She was born Nov. 25, 1902, in Wetzel County, West Virginia, daughter of the late James Lee and Ida May Shuman Nichols. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clare Hicks in 1968, and a sister, Constance Adeline Goulding. Mrs. Hicks was a retired bookkeeper with Wheeling Steel. She was a member of Burlington United Methodist Church in South Point, First United Methodist Church of Huntington and the Order of Eastern Star, Bridgeport, Ohio. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James Leroy and Peggy Sue Hicks of Barboursville; a sister, Nell Jane Williams of Warren, Mich.; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Wilburn and Jeanne Hicks of Wheeling, W.Va.; grandchildren James Reed and Lyn Hicks of Ona, Lisa Gail and Bill Omohundro of North Carolina; and great-grandchildren, James Corbett, Kyri Lanelle and Ethan Bradley Hicks of Ona.
Maxine Williams Casto
Mrs. Maxine Williams Casto, 72, of Nitro died Jan. 14, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House.
She was a former employee of American Viscose, member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 153 of Nitro, and was a Protestant.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne G. Casto; nephew and spouse, Gilbert and Judy Casto of Poca; numerous cousins.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 17, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca with Paul Arthur officiating. Burial in Wade Chapel Cemetery, Red House.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064; or a charity of choice.

Christina Dawn Schoonover, 24, of Nitro departed this life Jan. 16, 2003.
Chrissy was an employee of UNO’s and a graduate of Nitro High School. She is survived by her mother, Iris Trinajstick of Nitro; father, John T. Schoonover of Buffalo; sister, Barbara and husband, Shawn Huffman of Poca; brother, J.J. and wife, Kim Schoonover of Ripley; special aunt to Chasity and Jacob Hill; she is also survived by her cat, Kiko. Chrissy is also survived by a host of friends and loved by everyone.

Robin Renee Shultz, 38, of Lesage, WV, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in South Point, Obio, from injuries received in an auto accident. She was employed by the Nitro Moose Lodge No. 565, and formerly attended the Davis Creek Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Dale Shultz. Surviving are her companion, Najib Ayoub; mother, Joyce Sanders of Charleston; daughters, Robin Nicole Shultz of Dunbar, WV, Jessica Renee Shultz of Barboursville, WV; grandmother, Freda Hoffman of Charleston; brothers, Mitchell Ray Sanders of North Carolina, Michael Gordon Sanders of Charleston. Services were conducted Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston with the Rev. Michael Dent officiating. Burial in Culloden Cemetery.
Clara Jean Lewis Chapman
Clara Jean Lewis Chapman, 58, of Barboursville passed away at home on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, by Pastor Paul Meadows. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born March 30, 1944, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Luther and Elma Bledsoe Lewis. She was preceded in death by her baby sister, Beverly Ann and one brother-in-law, Larry Cooper. She is survived by her husband, Donald L. Chapman; one daughter, Sandi Lee Lusher of Ocala, FL; one son, Russell Darin Stevens of Barboursville; two sisters, Loretta Cooper and Deborah Beckelheimer both of Barboursville; two grandchildren, Chad and Andrew Lusher; two special friends, Judy Lawson and Edna Booten.
Alzada Mae Martin
Alzada Mae Martin, 88, of Barboursville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan 14, 2003. Services were conducted at Beard Mortuary on Saturday, Jan.18, 2003, by Pastor Gordon Rutherford, and her grandson Mark Owens. Burial in Greenbottom Cemetery, Lesage. She came as a blessing to this world and all who knew her on Feb. 7, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Louisa Carter Floyd. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elmer E. Martin, and loving sons, Davey, Cecil and Billy Martin; brothers, Morland, Everett and Elmer Floyd; and sisters, Virginia Martin and Mertie Adkins. She was a homemaker and a member of Olive Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Owens and husband Wetzel of South Point, and Mable Rowe of Barboursville; one son, Norman Martin and wife Pat of Yadkinville, N.C.; daughters-in-law, Ruth Martin and Sharon Martin of Barboursville. She has 14 grandchildren Mark, Monica, Kim, Norman, Lee, Kathy, Tammy, Billy, Chris, Teresa, Evie, Tommy, Jimmy, Donnie and Ronnie; and many great- grandchildren; one special little dog, Muncie; and several nieces and nephews. Robert Bradford “Bob” Burdick
Robert Bradford “Bob” Burdick, 42, of Ona, W.Va., lost a long and courageous battle with cancer on January 13, 2003. He died in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Reger Funeral Chapel, 1242 Adams Ave., Huntington with the Rev. Timothy W. Goss, his brother-in-law, officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Robert was born in May, 1960, in Westchester, Va., the son of Wallace K. Hill Sr. and Lillian Lopp Hill. Though his mothers subsequent remarriage, Robert became the adopted son of Harold E. Burdick, a former President and Publisher of The Huntington Herald Dispatch. The family relocated to Huntington, W.Va., in 1976. Robert graduated from Huntington High School in 1978 and the Marshall University College of Business in 1984. For eight years of his youth he was a paper carrier for the Herald Dispatch. Upon obtaining his degree, he was employed as Staff Accountant for Alcorp Consulting Inc., Ashland, Ky., and later for Hayflich and Steinberg, Huntington W.Va. In 1987 he entered into partnership in the firm of Chambers and Burdick. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1990 and led his own firm Burdick and Associates Financial Services Inc. of Huntington, from 1993 until the time of his death. During the course of his career in Estate Planning, life insurance and other financial services, he became widely recognized as a leader. He earned many awards for his achievements, but his pride in those awards was unsurpassed by his own joy in being able to serve his clients and his community well.
Robert was a Christian, a member of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce, a member of the HAIFA and the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. At leisure he was an avid sportsman with a passion for golf, he belonged to Sleepy Hollow Country Club, camping, hunting and fishing with his family. His family always came first, and he is survived by his devoted wife of 22 years, Donna K. Burdick; one daughter, Jennifer L. Burdick and one son, Christopher R. Burdick. Also surviving are his father and step-mother, Wallace and Geradline Hill of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; his father, Harold E. Burdick of El Paso, Texas; sister, Robbyn Hill Widmeyer and husband, Scott of Hustle, Va.; sister, Leah Hill Goss and husband Tim of Denver, Colo.; brother Wallace Kelley Hill Jr. of Ona, W.Va.; brother Michael K. Burdick and wife Sidney of Huntington, W.Va.; stepsiter Cindy Burdick and stepbrother, Steve Burdick of Duncan, Okla.; mother-in-law Janet Hinton of Ona, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Jeffrey Charles and wife Sharon of Morehead, Ky.; brother-in-law Michael Charles of Mount Sterling, KY., brother-in-law, Winford Joseph Charles of Huntington, W.Va., brother-in-law Jerry Charles of Ona, W.Va. and numerous nieces and nephews. Husband, father, son, brother, uncle, businessman, friend - he will be sorely missed. Robert Hall Hathaway Sr
Robert Hall Hathaway Sr. of Hurricane died Jan. 14, 2003, after a short illness.
He was born in Hundred on Nov. 15, 1929.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Hall Hathaway and Ruby Agnes Hicks Hathaway; his brother, Thomas Hathaway; and his foster-son, John Ballentine.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lois Jean Billups Hathaway; brother, Donald Hathaway of Baden, Pa.; sons, Robert Hall Hathaway Jr. and Rodney Hathaway of Hurricane; daughters, Karen Ward and Helen Cook of Hurricane, Nancy Drake of Scott Depot, Mary Beth Bednar of Cary, N.C.; and foster-son, Roger Elliott of Hurricane. Grandchildren and nephews also survive him.
Bob had lived in the Hurricane community for 46 years. He was a graduate of Davis and Elkins College and was employed for 43 years as a chemist with FMC Inc. He was a member of the Kanawha-Putnam Association for Retarded Citizens (the ARC) and helped pioneer special education programs in Putnam County in the 1960s. He had been a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a private pilot. He was a foster parent for 27 years. He had a consciousness of the underprivileged and those in need.

Mary Arlene Barton
Mary Arlene Barton, 59, of Winfield died Jan. 14, 2003, in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.
Arlene was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, St. Albans, and was a retired accountant for Columbia Natural Resources.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John J. and Mary Matik Drap.
She is survived by her husband, Ronald G. Barton; daughter, Alyson D. Tuck of Newark, Del.; stepdaughter, Denise Barton Hermel of Tequesta, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Joan Drap of North Olmstead, Ohio; niece and nephew, Katherine and Erik Drap; brother-in-law, Jay A. Barton of Shreveport, La.

Ray K. Barrickman
Ray K. Barrickman, 87, of Nitro died Jan. 14, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a short illness. Mr. Barrickman was a retired supervisor from Avtex Fibers Company, Nitro, with over 42 years of service. He lived most of his life in Kanawha County and was a member of First Baptist Church, Nitro, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Surviving are his wife Mildred Mills Barrickman at home; sons and their wives, Norman and Liliane of Loveland, Colo., Steve and Cheryl of Gallatin, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jeff, Nancy, Scott and Kenneth Barrickman; one great-granddaughter, Salena Barrickman. She was born November 3, 1906, in Mason County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Kemper and Lenora Crowder Perry. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett Hobert “Hode” Chapman; her children, Isabelle, Donald, Kemper, and Billy Joe Chapman; five sisters, Jennie Akers, Flossie Miser, Luvada Moffatt, Inez Chapman, and Corba Thomas; five brothers, Gearld, Woodrow, Arvil, Willie, and Haze Perry. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Milton Chapter and attended 5&20 Baptist Church. Hugh J. Forth, 96, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 11, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. Bob Johnson and the Rev. Bob Ray officiating. Burial in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom. Grandsons served as pallbearers. He was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Mason County, West Virginia, a son of the late George and Sarah George Forth. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Holley Forth; two brothers and five sisters. Mr. Forth was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Georgie Meadows Forth of Milton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Jane Forth of Coal Grove, Ohio, and Charles and Phyllis Forth of Barboursville; three daughters and one son-in-law, Nellie and Ray Preston of Milton, Margaret Forth of Milton and Billey Forth of Milton; eight grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. James Dorsey Stratton
James Dorsey Stratton, 77, of Milton, W.Va., husband of Margaret Markins Stratton passed away Sunday January 12, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Winford Curry. Burial in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. He was born July 15, 1925, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Clarence and Mabel Moore Stratton of Milton. He was retired from Southeastern Gas Company and was a member of Susannah Baptist Church on Fudges Creek for 48 years. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Carol Hayes and her husband Danny; one son, Tommy D. Stratton and his wife Cheryl; one granddaughter, Amy Beth Stratton; three grandsons, David Hayes, Dana Hayes and Matt Stratton; one great-grandson Jacob Hayes; three sisters, Marjorie Reynolds, Anna Ruth Clagg and Lorraine Meadows; five brothers, Virgil, Denver, Loran, Melvin and Muriel Stratton; and several nieces and nephews, all of the Milton area.
Frances Annie
Frances Hodges Annie, 80, of Hurricane died January 7, 2003, in CAMC Memorial Division.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, St. Albans, and Mount Salem Homemakers Club. She attended Marshall University and taught at Riders Creek School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Annie, parents, Preston Frazier and Clara Catherine Hill Hodges, and a sister, Ruth Hodges Eddins.
Surviving: sons, Phillip Anthony Annie of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Stephen Annie of Cross Lanes, and Father Frederick Preston Annie of Wheeling; daughter and son-in-law, Martha Annie Kay and James T. Kay of Chattanooga, Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Marianne Annie of South Charleston; sister, Virginia Catherine Soter of Newport News, Virginia; grandchildren, David Joseph and Elizabeth Annie of South Charleston, Stephanie Annie Haynes and husband, Ronald, of Hurricane; stepgrandchildren, Avian L. Mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, January 9, 2003, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Frederick P. Annie, V.E., as celebrant. Co-celebrants are the Rev. Patrick M. McDonough and other priests of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.
Donald H. Post Sr.
Donald H. “Don” Post Sr., 80, of Scott Depot died January 5, 2003.
Born July 26, 1922 in Clarksburg, he was a longtime resident of St. Albans prior to moving to Regency Place in Scott Depot.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Seth Post, in 2001.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, was retired from AT&T Long Lines. He was an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Nitro.
Surviving: wife of 57 years, Patricia Robinson Post; sons, Donald Post Jr. of Elkton, Maryland, Richard Post of Huntington, and Stephen Post of Kennesaw, Georgir; daughter, Jane Jones of Oviedo, Florida; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with Pastor John Rollins officiating. Interment
was in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Elbert F. Legge, 87, of Pliny died Janaury 5, 2003.
Service was held Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at Mount Union United Methodist Church, Pliny. Burial was in the church cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley was in charge of arrangements.
Julia L. Thornton
Julia Loretta Thornton, 78, of Winfield died January 8 2003.
She was bor December 12, 1924 to Arch and Naomi Vintroux, a founding family of Putnam County. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, three brothers, her husband, H.D. Thornton, and two children.
Julia was a wonderful Christian lady, homemaker and loving mother. Even though she had many health problems during the last years of her life, she always maintained a sweet spirit and thankful heart. He jolly personality, zeal for living and ability to laugh though all her trials were a joy and blessing to those around her. Her strength and courage to the very end was truly inspiring.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Danny M. Haught of Winfield; daughters, Patricia Paxson of Pliny, P.J. Elkins of Riga, Latvia, and Artimecia Lemon of Orlando, Florida; sons, Houston D. and Roger L. Thornton, both of Winfield; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren.

Mary Josephine Atkins Spears, 69, of Poca died January 8, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Spears.
She was retired from Kroger of Cross Lanes with 23 years of service, a memberopf Nitro Church of the Nazarene, attended Nitro Senior Citizens Center and participated in the art classes.
Surviving: children, Pam Fink of Charleston, Bob Spears of Poca and Karen Gillispie of Poca; brother, Bill Atkins of Cross Lanes; sisters, June Hawley of Poca, Jean Hartman of Marmet, Phyllis Marion of Charleston; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
