Mildred I. Mullins
Mildred I. “Millie” Mullins, 85, of Hurricane, formerly of Gallagher, died February 15, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was born May 23, 1917 in Webster County, a daughter of the late George W. and Sarah F. Cogar. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow “Woodie” Mullins, sisters, Nettie Marlowe and Leatha Mae Cogar, brother, Homer “Jack” Cogar, and a daughter-in-law, Patricia F. Mullins.
She was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: son, Edward “Kayo” Mullins of Culloden; daughters and their husbands, Sarah “Kitty” and Jerry Perry of Pt. Pleasant, Sharon and Donald Burnside of Marmet; grandchildren and their spouses, Elaina Perry and Dr. Louis Wickas, Dr. Penny Mullins and Timothy Braun, Deanna “Dee Dee” and Bane Hicks, Melissa Mullins, Celena Burnside and Pick Coulter, J.L. and Kathy Perry, and Chad Perry; great-grandchildren, Allesandra “Allie,” Jacob, Jonathan, Joseph and Adam Braun, Hannah and Anthony Perry, Austin Coulter and Chelsie Hicks.
Service was held Tuesday, February 16, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Minister Hollis Walter officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Reuben A. Little
Reuben A. “Jr.” Little, 78, of Winfield died February 14, 2003, at home following a long illness.
He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Winfield Locks, after 21 years of service, reaching the rank of assistant lockmaster. During his lifetime, he worked as a deck hand on the Red House ferryboat, was a mail carrier and worked for the Putnam County Board of Education.
He served in World War II in the U.S. Army in the 3891st Trucking Co. in the Hodges 1st Army, where he received medals for expert marksmanship as well as other honors. He was a lifelong member of the Red House United Brethren Independent Church.
Surviving: wife of 57 years, Mary Lee “Billie” Little; daughters, Theda Harris of Houston, Texas and Debby Sloan of St. Albans; son, John Little of Nitro; grandchildren, Becky Harris of Houston, Texas, Ronald Little of Nitro and Monica Sloan os St. Albans; great-grandsons, Connor and Alex Baldwin of Houston, Texas.
Service was held Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Greg Blake officiating. Burial was in Mount Olive Cemetery, Rock Castle WV.
Rita Louise Persinger
Rita Louise Persinger, 55, of Houston Texas died February 11, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston following a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Vernon and Eva Mae Allman Williams.
Surviving: companion, John D. Covert III; sons, John Richard “Rick” Persinger, wife, Jennifer, and George Robert “Robbie” Persinger, of Houston; brothers, Robert V. “Bob” Williams Jr. of La Porte, Texas, Terry L. Williams of Fraziers Bottom and Ronald K. Williams of Winfield; grandchildren, Cody, Corey, Samantha and Breanna Persinger.
Service was held Monday, February 17, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Gary Tucker officiating. Burial was in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.
Donald E. Withrow
Donald E. Withrow, 46, of Culloden, formerly of Bancroft, died February 14, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was a 22-year employee of AEP John Amos Plant, a member of the St. Albans Moose and the American Legion of Hamlin. He attended Poca High School and was an Army veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division.
Surviving: mother, Betty Withrow of Bancroft; stepchildren, Chris and Kelli Worrell; stepdaughter, Edna Quinbys and her children, Skyler Nicole and Amanda Pease; uncle, Benjamin Withrow of Martinsburg; aunts, Evelyn Shamblin of Orlando, Florida and Doris Wells of Parkersburg.
Service was held Monday, February 17, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Ray Humphrey officiating. Burial was in Schowen Cemetery, Bancroft.
Bobby Allen Grant
Bobby Allen Grant, 54, of Fraziers Bottom died February 17, 2003, in an automobile accident on 5&20 Road, Fraziers Bottom.
He was an employee of Security America and was a disabled Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton Otis and Marjorie Virginia Chapman Grant, sisters, Anita Faye Grant and Marilyn Edmonds, and brothers, William Oliver and Edwin Owen Russell Grant.
Surviving: daughters, Marjorie Bobby June Grant and Serina Sam Michelle Grant, both of Texas; sister, Oretha Jeffers of Poca; brothers, Clayton Gene Grant of Nitro, Roy Otis Grant of Buffalo, Donald Jarrett, Dewey Samuel, James Michael and Howard Lee Grant, all of Fraziers Bottom.
Graveside service and burial was held Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom, with Pastor Leo Chapman officiating. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Wendi R.E. Harless
Wendi R.E. Harless, 39, of Scott Depot, formerly of Williamson, died February 16, 2003, at her residence.
Born June 5, 1963 at Williamson, she was the daughter of the late Wetsel and Carlene Webb Evans. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Paul Harless.
She was a 1981 graduate of Williamson High School and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Marshall University. She had previously been employed as a paralegal. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Williamson and attended Temple Baptist Church, North Charleston.
Surviving: husband, Timothy H. Harless; daughter, Racia Leigh Harless at home; sisters and brother-in-law, Carla and Terry Stafford of Slaters Branch, Kentucky, and Deena Marcum of Williamson; mother-in-law, Maureen Harless of Charleston; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Friday, February 21, 2003, at Temple Baptist Church. The body was cremated. Weaver Mortuary, Williamson, was in charge of arrangements.
Jewel Jividen
Jewel Hunter Jividen, 82, of Midway, Putnam County, died February 16, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
She was born in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Fremont and Maude Hunter.
She was a homemaker and made sewing projects, including many quilts for family and friends.
Surviving: her husband of 62 years, Brycle Jividen; sons and their wives, Arnold Edward and Barbara of Midway, Jerry Dean and Rhonda of Eleanor; daughter and her husband, Roberta Lee Jividen and Donald Coleman of Flatwoods; brothers, Dwight Hunter of Rock Castle and Carroll Hunter of Ohio; sister, Margaret Carney of Rock Castle; grandchildren and their spouses, Terry and Terri Coleman, Carol and David Boyd, Ron Coleman, Adam and Jill Jividen, Amy and Shawn Tucker; great-grandchildren, Garrett, Ryan, Courtney, Shelley and Dena.
Service was held Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Given.

Janace M. Rogers
Janace M. Rogers, 84, of Hurricane died February 16, 2003, at home.
She was employed for several years by A.W. Cox Department Stores and was the former owner/operator of the Scott Depot Dairy Queen. She was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, where she was also a member fo the Philathea Class, the Ona Eggleston Circle and the Live Embers. She had been a resident of Putnam County since 1958.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Elizabeth Rogers.
Surviving: her husband of 64 years, Delvin G. Rogers; sons, Steve E. Rogers of Scott Depot and Jim A. Rogers of Dunbar; daughter, Judy Stutler of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; sister, Jewel Jones of Scott Depot; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee White and the Rev. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.
Marilyn Simon
Marilyn Waterstone Simon, 65, of Scott Depot died February 17, 2003, in CAMC Memorial Division.
She was born in Charleston and was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard Charles and Charlotte Waterstone, and brother, Melvin Waterstone.
She was a retired secretary from the state of West Virginia Insurance Commissioner’s office. She attended B’nai Jacob Synagogue and was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, Charleston.
Surviving: her husband of 47 years, Cornelius Simon of Scott Depot; son, Jeffrey Simon of Burlington, Kentucky; daughters, Jennifer Overcash and Jan Thompson, both of Scott Depot; sisters, Doris Zagon of Florida and pat Holstein of Wilmington, Delaware; brothers, Herman Waterstone of Florida, Donald Waterstone of Arizona, Robert Waterstone of Miami, Florida, and Leonard Waterstone of Huntington.
Graveside service was held Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at B’nai Jacob Eternal Home, Ruth, with Rabbi Victor Urecki officiating. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel H. Broyles
Hazel Hedrick Broyles, 91, of Barnwell, South Carolina died February 19, 2003.
Born in Scott Depot, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Carrie Lewis Hedrick. She was also preceded in death by her husband, C.P. Broyles.
She was a retired seamstress and a member of Barnwell Church of Christ.
Suviving: son, Charles O. Broyles of Orlando, Florida; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Service was held Friday, February 21, 2003, at the Barnwell Church of Christ. Burial was in Barnwell County Cemetery. Mole Funeral Home, Barnwell, was in charge of arrangements.
Steven L. Burns
Steven L. Burns, 48, of Teays Valley died February 18, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Surviving: mother, Betty Lou Burns Perkins of Hurricane; brother, Lou Harris “Chip” Perkins II of Kanawha City; aunt and uncle, Boyd and Jessie Burdette of Hurricane; aunt, Vonnie Runyan of California; and a host of friends.

Claribel V. Morris
Clarible V. Morris of Scott Depot died February 18, 2003, at her residentce after battling cancer and kidney disease.
She was retired from Heck’s Department Store, St. Albans, and also worked at 4th Street Grocery, St. Albans. She was a lifelong resident of Scott Depot and a meber of Scary Freewill Baptist Church, Scott Depot.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert L. and Naomi V. Bird Moore, and a niece, Deborah Morris.
Surviving: sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and James Ross, Velma and Earl Roberts, all of St. Albans, Roberta and Ronald Naylor of Cross Lanes, Elaine and Lowell Chambers of St. Albans, Anita and Earnest Rhodes of Hurricane; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Drema Morris of St. Albans, Lee and Barbara Morris of Scott Depot; eight nieces and 13 nephews; 12 great-nieces and 18 great-nephews; one great-great-niece and one great-great-nephew.

Bathelene G. Stone
Bathelene G. Fisher Stone, 73, of Liberty died Thursday, February 20, 2003, at Thomas Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was a former employee for the hosiery and bra plant in Elenaor, a former seamstress for the Bobbie Brooks Co., Nitro, and a homemaker. She was a lielong resident of Putnam County and a member of Walker Chapel Bible Church, Robertsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldridge and Mary Etta Fisher, and brothers, Joe, Roy, Carl and Odra Fisher.
Surviving: her husband of 46 years, Alvin “Bid” Stone; son, Glenn Stone and wife, Joetta, of Red House; daughter, Madeline and her late husband, William Coy Smith, of Eleanor; granddaughter, Amanda Stone and her fiance, Justin Conley, of Red House; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Service was held Sunday, February 23, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Scott Casto and Pastor Larry Woody officiating. Burial was in Walker Chapel Cemetery, Robertsburg.

James Toby Brown
James Toby Brown, 56, of Charleston, formerly of Bancroft, died February 20, 2003, after a long battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas O. and Gladys M. Brown, and his brother, Thomas Junior Brown.
Surviving: sister and brother-in-law, Boots and Frank Workman of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; brother, Charles W. Brown of Poca; uncle, Clarence Booth Jr. of Barboursville; two nieces, four nephews; five great-nieces; five great-nephews.
