Howard J. Warner
Howard J. Warner, 84, of Hometown died Sunday, January 26, 2003, following a long illness.
He was born in Putnam County, the son of the late Homer and Codia King Warner.
He was a retired ironworker. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and saw action in the Philippines. He was an active member of VFW Post 9097 in Teays Valley, and served as post commander, among other positions.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Howard Eugene Warner, and brothers, Hobart “Jack” and Vernon Warner.
Surviving: former wife, Louise Hedrick Warner of Rotonda West, Florida; daughter, Ruth Ann Brown of Rotonda West; sons, Charles “Bill” of Clover Lick and Clyde of Hurricane; three granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandsons; longtime friend and companion, Phyllis Hudson of Hometown.
Service was held Wednesday, January 29, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar, with military rites provided by VFW Post 9097.
Vincent W.B. Paul
Vincent W.B. Paul, 74, of Hurricane died February 2, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
He was a graduate of Hurricane High School and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from C&P Telephone in 1989 after 37 years of service, and was a member of the C&P Pioneers.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Paul, his parents, Sam Ed and Mary Belle Paul, and his brother, Nelson.
Surviving: wife, Joan; sons, Mike of Barboursville and Randy of Beckley; daughter, Pam Amos of Leesburg, Virginia; stepchildren, Debbie Williams of Evansville, Indiana and Karen Carter of Lake Arrowhead, California; sisters, Fannie McCallister, Elsie Dailey and Dinah Filippone, all of St. Albans, and Phyllis Boswell of Colonial Heights, Virginia; brothers, Sam Ed Jr. of Whitney, Texas and Eugene of Grove City, Ohio; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Bruce Young officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Mary L. McCraw
Mary L. McCraw, 85, of Hurricane died Saturday, February 1, 2003, in Teays Valley Center, Hurricane.
She was born January 11, 1918 in Ward, a daughter of the late Randall and Beatrice Bannister Skiles. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Raymond and R.P. Skiles, and sisters, Marjorie Gregory and Bernice Lewis.
Surviving: daughters, Beverly Alford of Hurricane and Judith Jenkins of Medford, Oregon; sons, John McCraw of Baltimore, Ohio, Stephen McCraw of Littleton, Colorado, and Charles Wilkinson, address unknown; sisters, Paula Hudnall of Belle and Carol Hamon of Ripley; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Service was held Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Mr. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Norma J. Abston
Norma Jean Rutherford Abston, 63, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Scott Depot, died Friday, January 31, 2003, after battling cancer for 13 months.
She attended The House of Prayer and was a volunteer at Doctors West Hospital, Columbus. She was a homeroom mother at Mary Ingles Elementary School and a Brownie and Girl Scott leader at Midway Elementary School.
She was born February 5, 1939 in Beckley, but spent most of her life in Kanawha and Putnam counties and Columbus. She devoted her life to helping others.
Surviving: husband, Leo Abston of Columbus; daughter, Pam Abston, and grandson, Ethan Miguel Abston of Winfield; mother, Thelma L. “Dot” Linville; sisters, Peggy Knight of Merriville, Indiana, Janet Lehman of Beaver, and Mary Louise Miller of Beckley; brother, Dr. Lewis Rutherford of Parkersburg; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Service was held Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with the Rev. Kenny Pool officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2003, at The House of Prayer in Columbus.
Deborah Maxine Saunders
Deborah Maxine Saunders, 44, of Huntington, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, Jan 30, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh Pa. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Cledith Campbell. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born Sept. 11, 1958, in McDowell County, West Virginia a daughter of Billy J. and Louise Carter Dillon of Huntington. She attended. Beulah Ann Chapel Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Sui-Hong Francis Foo. She is survived by her husband, David Saunders; one daughter, Katrina Louise Foo of Huntington; one son Christopher Francis Foo of Huntington; four stepchildren Sheena Annette Stanley, Sabrina Dawn Saunders, Steven Wesley Saunders and Lisa Danielle Martinez, all of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters Phyllis Robertson and her husband Pete, Gail Butcher and her husband Joe, and Helen Smith and her late husband, Roy, one brother, Charlie Dillon; four grandchildren several nieces and nephews. Wallace Home Barboursville was in charge of arrangements.
Larry Marvin Duncan
Larry Marvin Duncan, 59, entered into Heaven Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Henson Mortuary with Ministers Walter Brewer and Danny Evans officiating. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Huntington He was a master electrician and last worked for Pritchard Electric. He was a member of Farmdale Church of Christ, Barboursville. He was the son of the late William and Minnie Chafin Duncan. Survivors include his wife, Janell Miller Duncan, one daughter, Paula Turman of Huntington; one son Andy Duncan of Indianapolis, Indiana; and four sisters, Wilma Ferrell of Tampa, FL, Patricia Welch of Hopewell, Va, Marsha Dickerson of Huntington and Melvina Duncan of Hopewell Va.; one brother, James Duncan of Huntington; and one grandson Blake Turman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald Duncan. Pallbearers werre Harold Mitchell, Jim Hatfield, Carl Martin, Carlton Asbury, Jack Miller and Gary Hughes. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.. “I have fought a good fight, and I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Rita Carol Marion Midkiff
Rita Carol Marion Midkiff, 55, of Barboursville, formerly of Charleston, wife of Michael Midkiff died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in St Mary’s Medical Center. Rita was an amazing person with a tremendous heart. She had a love of angels which she collected. Her greatest love and commitment, though, was for her family and close friends. In addition to her husband, Rita is survived by daughter, Johna Marion; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Karon Marion, very special grandson Alex Marion, brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Patti Novak; very special aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Roland Grabfelder, nieces and nephews, Joey Beth Novak, Kallie Novak, Tammy Anderson, Becky Johnson, Karen Ritter, Cindy Yent, Richard Novak II, Shane Cleghon, Joseph Midkiff and Morgan Midkiff, mother and father-in-law, Barbara and Hampton Midkiff; and brother and sister-in-law, Gerry and Willa Midkiff. Als surviving are many special friends, Connie Brumfield, Sheila Cooper, Jean Morgan and Judy Perdue; and her second family at Barboursville Wal-Mart where she worked. Rita was a parishoner at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Huntington. She truly loved all her friends there, especially Monsignor Luciana. Rita will always be missed beyond words. Henson Mortuary, East Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements. Funeral liturgy wase held 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Carbolic Church of Huntington. Fredrick Donald Frazier
Fredrick Donald Frazier, 85, of Milton, passed away Friday, Jan 31 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Feb, 3, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Dr. Thomas J. DuBose officiating.. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born Nov. 8, 1917, in Logan County, WVa., a son of the late William and Mattie Carter Frazier. He was a member of Milton Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Juanita M. Frazier one son, James F. Frazier of Ona, W.Va.; two grandsons, Joshua James Frazier and Thomas Harrison Frazier. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Sadie Estelle Bills Farley, 74, of Barboursville went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, Jan 30, 2003 from the Heartland of Riverview extended care facility. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at the Gethsemane United Baptist Church, where she was a member. Rev. Steve Nida and Rev. Bobby Burns officiating; burial in Luther Adkins Cemetery on Beech Fork. Estelle was born Feb, 10, 1928, in Lincoln County, WV the daughter of the late Walden E and Naoma M. Bills. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon K. Lucas , two granddaughters Malisa K Adkins and infant Miranda Lucas; four brothers William, Elbert, Robert, and Everett “Pappy” Bills; two sisters, Anna Mae Maynard and Willie “Marie: Lucas

Farley of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Diana Farley of Tempe, Ariz.; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and John Gilkerson of Barboursville; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Zachary and Roberta Bills of Barboursville, Decker “Odell” and Gail Bills of Proctorville, Ohio, and Louise Bills of Barboursville; one sister, Vetura Nida of Barboursville; four grandchildren, Gary Farley Jr. of Tempe, Ariz., Valerie Farley of Chandler, Ariz., James “Jim” Gilkerson and his wife Jeanne of Lizemores, W.Va, and AIC Jeremy Gilkerson of Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; two great-grandchildren Kiersten Farley and Elijah Gilkerson; along with a host of other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Heartland of Riverview for the care provided to Estelle during her stay and for the compassion shown to her family. Estelle will be sorely missed by her community as well as her many relatives and friends.

Loretha Faye Bird, 71, of Milton, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 26, 2003, at Sunbridge of Putnam, Hurricane, after a long illness. She was a homemaker and a devoted mother. Member First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Bird; her parents, Clate L and Emma J. Garrett Campbell; sisters, Bonnie Campbell and Hazel Ellis; brothers, Herald and Ronnie Campbell. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Johnnie R. and Robin Bird of Milton, W.Va.; granddaughters and grandson-in-law, Regina and Mike Lewis and Sherry and Michael Hayes, all of Hurricane, W.Va., Wendy Bird and Tiffani Rowsey, both of Milton, W.Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law. Lonnie and Rosie Campbell of Culloden, W.Va., Paul and Irma Lee Campbell of Hurricane, W.Va., Carlton and Bethel Campbell of Ona, W.Va.; great-grandchildren, Sierra Bird-Hayes, Celesta Hayes and Michael Hayes II; also several nieces and nephews and a long list of many friends.
