Terry Gumm
Terry Gumm, 48, of Fraziers Bottom died April 16, 2003, after a sudden illness.
He was a member of Fraziers Bottom United Methodist Church. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency and a member of the Tobacco Growers Association and the Putnam-Lincoln Farm Bureau. He was a graduate of West Virginia University and a 20-year resident of Putnam County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George Henry and Pearl Hoard Gumm.
Surviving: wife Janice Gumm; sons, Nathan Gumm of Fraziers Bottom and Aaron Gumm, a student in Mount Vernon, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Lindsay Gumm of Poca; sisters, Colleen Rhodes of Hugheston, Bennie Goad of Etna, Ohio, Sharon Friend of Belpre, Ohio, and Jonnett Patton of Bridgeport, Alabama; brother, Tom Gumm of Exchange.
Service was held Monday, April 21, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Kenneth Coon officiating. Burial was in Flatwoods Cemetery, Flatwoods WV.

Dennis G. Smalley
Dennis G. Smalley, 64, of Nitro died april 17, 2003, at home.
He was a former resident of Red House, retired from Ray Kesling Construction, a Marine veteran, a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge No. 565, and a Christian.
Surviving: wife, Mary F. Smalley; children, Dennis G. Smalley II of Auburn, New York, Marvin L. Smalley of McMinnville, Tennessee and Denise G. Smalley of Nitro; sisters, Betty Kesling and Loretta Saunders; brothers, Dencil Smalley, William “Buddy” Smalley, Larry Smalley and Roger Smalley; seven grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, April 21, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley and the Rev. Marvin Smalley officiating. Burial was April 22, 2003 at Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Doris Clark
Doris Ash Clark, 90, of Hurricane died Saturday, April 19, 2003, in SunBridge Nursing Center.
She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane Woman’s Club and a resident of Regency Place.
She was the former owner of Hurricane Five and Dollar Store and Doris’ Dress Shop in Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her husbamd Walter L. Clark.
Surviving: children, Wanda C. Allen of Hurricane and Jack D. Clark of Vero Beach, Florida; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in Ridgelawn Mmeorial Park, Huntington, with the Rev. Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church.

Daniel Franklin Black
Daniel Franklin Black, 47, of Milton passed away Friday, April 18, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Chelcie Gibson. Burial in Chestnut Grove Cemetery. He was born January 25, 1956, in Milton, a son of Sylvia Imogene Bryant of Mason County, W.Va. and the late Johnny Arthur Black. He also is survived by two sons, Adam Black and his wife Bridget, of Milton and Joshua Black of Barboursville; three sisters, Karen Clagg of Barboursville, Linda Meadows of Barkers Ridge and Michelle Black of Huntington; three brothers, David Black of Barkers Ridge, and Roy Black and Tony Black, both of Milton; two grandchildren, Adam Zacariah Black and Kaitlyn Brianne Black; and the mother of his children, Glenna Black.

Orval G. “Jack” Blankenship
Orval G. “Jack” Blankenship, 72, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, April 19, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Crook Chapel Church by the Rev. Ralph Houck. Burial in Crook Cemetery. He was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Cabell County, a son of the late Cline and Virgie Dodson Blankenship. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Louise Burdette Blankenship. He was a member of Crook Chapel Church and worked his entire life in the wholesale grocery business. He is survived by three sons, Jamie Blankenship of Huntington, Randy Blankenship of Barboursville and Bobby Blankenship of Washington Courthouse, Ohio; three sisters, Catherine Seitz and Shirley Waugh both of Huntington, and Sue Russell of Barboursville; two brothers, Richard Blankenship of Cleveland, Ohio and Robert Blankenship of Glenwood, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. “Dick” Bias
Richard C. “Dick” Bias, 80, of Milton, died at home April 19, 2003, after a brief illness. He was born March 27, 1923, a son of the late Basil and Ora Winifred Brown Bias. He was a former mayor of Milton and founding member of the Milton Volunteer Fire Department, of which he was fire chief for many years and had 50 years of service. He also was an EMT as well as the owner/operator of several service stations in the Milton area. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Milton Baptist Church, the Milton American Legion and VFW, and also a Kentucky Colonel. He is survived by his wife, Flora Belle Bias; two sons, Brent Bias of Ona and Scott Bias of Lesage; three granddaughters; four step-granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. His body is being donated for medical research at his and his wife request. A memorial service was held at the Milton Volunteer Fire Department on Monday, April 21, 2003. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and the Cabell Wayne Association of the Blind. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Alvon “L.A.” “Chappy” Chapman
Lloyd Alvon “L.A.” “Chappy” Chapman, 74, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Thursday, April 17, 2003 at his residence. Funeral service were conducted Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Dolen. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery. He was born Sept. 1, 1928, a son of the late Everette and Clara Chapman. Mr. Chapman was a painter at AC&F for 39 years, as well as a lifetime member of the VFW Post 9738 and the Military Order Purple Heart Chapter 1863. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Black Chapman of Milton; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lloyd Alford “Chubby” Chapman of Milton, Ronnie Allen and Kris Chapman of Ona and a daughter, Karen Lynn Baker of Huntington; four grandchildren, Joshua Baker of Atlanta, Ga., Laura Chapman of Milton, Lloyd Andrew Chapman of Barboursville and J.D. Chapman of Ona; he is also survived by several family members and friends. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Grace A. Guenther
Grace A. Guenther, 87, of Barboursville, widow of Reinhold F. Guenther, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, in Heritage Manor Care Center. She was born Jan. 21, 1916, in New York City, a daughter of the late Earl and Emma Shultz Potter. She was a bookkeeper. She was a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. She also was preceded in death by a son, Reinhold W. Guenther. Graveside services were conducted Monday, April 21, 2003, in Westfield Presbyterian Cemetery, New Castle, Pa., with Dr. Robert Bradeen officiating. Henson Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Stephen E. Knight
Stephen E. Knight, 53, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed from this life on Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Huntington, WV. He was born Feb. 8, 1950, a son of the late Russell A. and Dorothy M. Knight. Survivors include one son, John Knight of San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Sarah Knight of San Antonio and Marla Knight of Chandler, Ariz.; a grandson, Stephen Knight of California; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Barbara Knight of Barboursville and Martin and Belinda Knight of Huntington; a sister and brother-in-law, with whom he made his home, Robert and Darla Ramsey of Barboursville; a special cousin, Joyce Knight of Proctorville, Ohio; four nephews; three nieces; two step nieces and three step nephews. He served proudly in the Vietnam War with the United States Marine Corps. Due to his personal wishes, there was no service. Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, was in charge or arrangements.

William E. Warner Jr.
William E. Warner Jr., 90, of Hurricane, formerly of Cross Lanes, died April 12, 2003, in Canada’s Tender Touch Personal Care Home after a long illness.
Mr. Warner was a retired instrument mechanic for Union Carbide Corporation, having worked at both the South Charleston and Taft, La., plants.
Mr. Warner was a member of Cross Lanes United Methodist Church where he was a former Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He was also a former Boy Scout leader.
Mr. Warner was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mabel E. Warner.
Surviving are son, William “Bill” of Micco, Fla.; daughter, Nancy Austin of Hurricane; grandchildren, Bill, Craig and Terry Warner, all of Cross Lanes, Danny Warner of North Carolina, Cindy Miller and Lisa Farley, both of Hurricane; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Cross Lanes United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Hayes and the Rev. Nat Turner Lacy officiating. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Memorials may be made to Cross Lanes United Methodist Church Building Fund in memory of Mr. Warner.
Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro, was in charge of arrangements.

Marguerite I. Facemyre
Marguerite I. Facemyre, 63, of Nitro died April 15, 2003, in CAMC Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Facemyre is survived by three children, Charles Facemyre of Fraziers Bottom, Tamara Combs of Nitro, Doug Facemyre of Poca; two sisters, Rosa Ray of Sissonville, Linda Brown of Conway, S.C.; and two granddaughters, Tawnya and Lindsay.
Graveside service and burial were held Friday, April 18, in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Sissonville, with Pastor John Taylor officiating. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Katherine Perry Crawford
Katherine Perry Crawford, 88, of Branchland, WV, formerly of Huntington, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 18, 2003 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Carlos Gibson. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born March 26, 1915, in Kentucky, a daughter of the late Samuel W. and Onea Perry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Davidson Gault Crawford and one daughter, Kathy Elizabeth Crawford Bolton. She was a retired practical nurse at Cabell Huntington Hospital and for Dr. Carl Hoffman. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church Huntington. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Ellen Crawford Chek of Silver Spring, Md.; and two granddaughters, Stephanie and Leslie Bolton of Baltimore, Md.

Okey Ray Miller
Okey Ray Miller, 73, of Hurricane, died April 14, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center after a long illness.
He was retired from Scholz Homes and Value City Furniture. He was a lifelong member of Laywell Church of Christ, serving as an elder for the last several years, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a local and Civil War historian.
He was the son of the late C.W. “Joe” and Dovie Miller.
Surviving are his wife, Jane; daughter, Sandy Larch of Hurricane; son, Wayde Miller of Georgetown, KY; five grandchildren, Jackie, Joseph and JT Miller and Noah and Amanda Larch; three brothers, Harley and Hubert, both of Hurricane, Preston of Culloden; and one sister, Imogene Burdette of Hurricane.
Services were held Thursday, April 17, at Laywell Church of Christ, Hurricane. Burial in Sycamore Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Mae Belle Whittington
Mae Belle Martin Whittington, 64, of Buffalo passed away April 15, 2003, in Arbors at Gallipolis following a long illness.
She was a member of Otter Branch Church, Buffalo, a retired kindergarten aide from Putnam County Schools with 29 years of service and a life-long resident of Buffalo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos L. Whittington; her daughter, Corina Whittington; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include daughters, Eugenia Moore of Ravenswood, Darlena Cain and Martha Alexander, both of Buffalo; brothers, Kenneth and Gilbert Martin, both of Buffalo; sisters, Gladys Wandling of Nitro, Geraldine Johns of Buffalo; and grandchildren, Amos E. Whittington, Thomas Moore, Sabrina Cain, Heather Moore, Charlie Cain and Johni Lynn Alexander.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 17, 2003 at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Mike Tucker officiating. Burial in Whittington Family Cemetery, Buffalo.

Emma G. Ray Chapman
Emma G. Ray Chapman, 91, of Barboursville passed away Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Chateau Grove Personal Care Home. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Ridgelawn Abbey of Devotion Mausoleum with the Rev. Andrew Magnusson officiating. Burial followed. She was born January 27, 1912, in Huntington, a daughter of the late William and Alice Pollack Ray. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church in the Valley, Milton, and former member of Highlawn Baptist Church, Huntington. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clyde L. Chapman; three sisters; two brothers and a grandson, Donald Chris Elmore. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and Don Elmore of Proctorville, Ohio; one brother, Forest Ray of Wadsworth, Ohio; two nephews, Don Ray and wife, Becky, and Dr. William Myers and wife Becky, all of Huntington; one niece, Betty Lou Gould and husband, Richard of Wadsworth, Ohio; one granddaughter, Kim Legg of Huntington; two grandchildren, Jason and Natalie Legg; one great-granddaughter, Haylee; and a special friend, Nelda Daniels. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington.

Jordan Tyler Browning
Jordan Tyler Browning, infant son of Seth and Carrie Lynn Browning, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in Bias Chapel Cemetery, Dry Ridge, with Pastor Dean Roberts officiating. In addition to his parents, Jordan is survived by his maternal grandmother, Dons Noel of Ona; paternal grandparents, Vernon and Cecelia Browning of Hurricane; three aunts, Misty Clagg, Jessica Noel and Amanda Browning and two uncles, Jeremy Childers and Eric Browning. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of the arrangements.

Sharlene Sue Mitchell Black
Sharlene Sue Mitchell Black, 57, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Sunday, April 13, 2003, at her residence. Funeral service were conducted Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Barker Ridge United Baptist Church; burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born April 29, 1945, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Wilson and Lovena Mitchell. She was a homemaker and member of Barker Ridge United Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Rodney Black; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Timothy Edmunds of Milton and Bridgette and Srini Chevuru of Gainesville, Fla.; two brothers and four sisters, Ralph Mitchell of Rice, Va., Serena Lawson of Gum Springs, Va., Karen Morrison of Milton, her twin sister, Sherlene Perry of Milton, Judy Ball of Milton and Bernard Mitchell of Barboursville; four grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Nathanael Edmunds, and Lucas Mitchell Chevuru; and a host of special nieces, nephews family and friends. Heck Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of arrangements.

Oreita Ann Lowe
Oreita Ann Lowe, 74, of Hurricane died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at home. She retired from Putnam County Clerk’s Office as Deputy Clerk. She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, K.M. “Red” Lowe; two daughters, Nancy Adkins of Fayetteville W.Va. and Sandy Handley of Fayetteville, Ark.; two grandchildren, Sara and Christopher Adkins; and brothers and sisters, Emma Jean Ruffing, Gwendolyn Maxine Easterling, Donna Gayle Ellenburg, J.C. Fowler and Willis Fowler, all of Kentucky, and Geneva Jo Blair of Ohio. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial held in Valley View Memorial Park. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Norma J. Rothermund
Norma Jean Call Meeks Rothermund, 72, of Hurricane died April 6, 2003, in SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness.
Born March 10, 1931 in Huntington, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Nora Christy Call. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Garnett Watson and Edith Mason, and her son, James Ivan Meeks
She was a retired server from Shoney’s of Teays Valley and a member of Adda Baptist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Beverly Meeks, Stephen and Beverly Meeks, all of Winfield; sisters, Thelma Grant of Hurricane, Nellie Williams of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bernice Slough of Ridgeland, South Carolina, and Alma Byus of Winfield; foster brother, Donald Stewart of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Tim Gilfilen and Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane.
