Garnet Belva Spurlock, 93, of Huntington passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, the Rev. Sue Jarrett officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born February 9, 1910, daughter of the late Thomas E. and Cora Burnett Jeffers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Wayne White; a sister, Frances Smith; and brothers, Boyd, Lloyd and Vance Jeffers. She was a homemaker and a member of Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, Pea Ridge Woman’s Club, Pea Ridge Garden Club and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Spurlock; a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Sara Spurlock of Gallipolis, Ohio; daughter and son-in-law, Cora Sue and John White of Proctorville, Ohio; a sister, Margaret Pope of Patriot, Ohio; brothers, Charles Jeffers of Eureka, Ohio, and Ray Jeffers of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren Timothy and Krystal Spurlock, Anne and Todd Borch, Robin and Brian Schrader, and great-grandchildren, Caden Spurlock, Garin Spurlock, Kyle and Riley Schrader. Lillian Faye Harris, 77, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, April 3, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, the Rev. Howard Sparks officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born August 2, 1925, in Barboursville, a daughter of the late Blackburn and Chloe Ann Kuhn Estep. She was a retired employee of the Barboursville Veterans Home and was a of Norway Avenue Church of Christ. She is survived by her loving husband, Willie Harris, and one sister Inez Handley of Huntington. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville was in charge of arrangements.
Mildred “Midge” Wells
Mildred “Midge” Wells, 73, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Thursday, April 3, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral service were held Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with the Rev. James Jobe officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born December 20, 1929, a daughter of the late John Cecil and Lydia Jewell Gibson. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Connie Sue Chapman and former husband, Willard Wells. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse at Cabell Huntington Hospital for 29 years. She is survived by her sister, Alzana Taylor of Milton; niece, Lynn Garner of Laurel, Md.; and nephews, Keith Taylor and John Taylor, both of Milton.
Robert Larry Kelly
Robert Larry Kelly, 55, of Branchland, went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2003. He was born February 6, 1948, in Bluefield, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jo An Adkins and his father, Benjamin Kelly. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Anna Adkins Kelly; one daughter Sherry Corbett of Barboursville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Chris Kelly of Barboursville, and Robert and Carrie Kelly of Ona; one foster son, Jerry Baisden at home; seven grandchilden, Dusten Bills, Carrie Hardiman and Chuckie Lewis, all of Barboursville, Jeremy Kelly of Huntington, Keshia Kelly, Joshua Kelly and Dylan Kelly, all of Ona; four sisters, Marsha Adkins of Branchland, Belva Courtney of Springfield, Mo., Sally Johnson of Barboursville, and Carol Sue Parsons of Salt Rock; one brother Larry “Pete” Kelly of Salt Rock; special nephew, Johnny Adkins of Wayne and special niece, Alisha Adkins of Branchland; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, April 6, 2003 at the Bethlehem United Baptist Church by the Rev. Zachary Bills, the Rev. Ray Adkins and the Rev. Truman Adkins. Burial in Eaves Cemetery. Erma Lucille Reynolds
Erma Lucille Reynolds, 82, of Cape Coral, Fla., died March 29, 2003, at her residence. Graveside funeral service were conducted Friday, April 4, 2003, at Forest Memorial Park Mausoleum with Dr. Terrell Bradley officiating. She was born October 19, 1920, in Huntington, WV, a daughter of the late Audie and Nona Nicely. She moved to Cape Coral in 1985 from Huntington. She was a devoted mother and wife. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Woodrow “Woody” Reynolds; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Glenda Reynolds of Wellington, Fla.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Donna Jo Harlan and Deborah and Danny Chapman of Cape Coral, Fla.; six children, Ronnie Reynolds, Jr. of California, Nona Burns of Hickory, N.C., Lollis Reynolds of Greensboro, NC, Rebecca Reynolds of Hickory, NC, Kenny Harlan of Ackworth, GA and Kimberly Catania of Cape Coral Fla.; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by grandson, Timothy Harlan; three sisters, Tress Chapman, Josephine Brown and Virginia Knapp; two brothers, Clifton Chapman and, Vernon Nicely. She was a member of Daybreak Fellowship Church and Milton Chapter #149, Order of the Eastern Star. William S. Webb, 61, of Huntington passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were held Friday, April 4, at the Wallace Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Randy Ward. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born October 22, 1941 a son of the late John and Myrtle Sweet Webb. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired employee of St. Mary’s Hospital. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Webb; two sisters, Thelma Gardner and Edna Mae McDonald. He is survived by his wife, Connie Webb at home; one stepdaughter, Shelley Collins of South Point Ohio; one stepson, Rodney Collins of Milton, one sister, Margaret Brown of Chicago, Ill.; and one daughter, Jerika Collins.

Bob Blake officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born August 13, 1927, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Harrison and Mary Hodges Gibson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Okey L. Mount, one grandson, Delbert L. Mount and one sister, Mary Frances Turner. She was a member of the Salvation Army Home League. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and James Saunders of Glenwood; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Clyde and Delores Mount and Clarence Mount, all of Lesage; one granddaughter, Charlotte Mount of Lesage; one sister, Margaret Hagley of Lesage; three brothers, Paul Gibson and Hubert Gibson, both of Huntington, and Lowell Gibson of Glenwood, and several nieces and nephews.

Roscoe W. Skaggs, 68, of Hurricane passed away Tuesday, April 1. 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral service were conducted Friday, April 4, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Kim Stone officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Grandchildren served as pallbearers. He was born August 9, 1934, in Huntington W.Va, a son of the late Timothy and Lucille Backus Skaggs. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. He was a member of the Rolling Thunder Chapter 1, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rhetta Gibson Skaggs; four sons, Michael Skaggs of Huntington, Roscoe Skaggs, Jr. of Harrisville, W.Va., Allen Skaggs of Barboursville and Timothy Skaggs of Hurricane; four daughters, Sandy Collins of Davin, W.Va., Sharon Belcher of Spring Mills, Pa., Mary Davis of Hurricane and Bertha Scarberry of Branchland, W.Va.; 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mataline Mitchell Benford, 82, of Milton passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral service were conducted Friday, April 4, 2003, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Barboursville, with Dr. T.J. DuBose and the Rev. Ronald Stoner officiating. Entombment followed. She was born January 26, 1921, a daughter of the late Levi W. and Josie Gillenwater Mitchell. She was also preceded in her death by her husband, Lee Benford and her brother, Robert Mitchell. Mataline was a former bookkeeper for Happy Hall Lumber and for many years she was a secretary for Cummings Insurance Agency, Milton. She was a member of Milton Baptist Church, Milton Chapter 149, Order of the Eastern Star, White Shrine, and the Amaranth. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lee “Benny” and Gail Benford of Ravenswood, W.Va.; daughter, Natalie Forth of Charleston S.C.; sister-in-law, Mariam Mitchell of Shreveport, La.; five grandchildren, Katherine, Adam. and Andrew Benford, Mandy and Casey Forth; one great-grandchild, Kyla Forth. Dorothy Sue Bills Marcum
Dorothy Sue Bills Marcum, 51, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 30, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Dorothy was born October 19, 1951, in West Hamlin, WV, a daughter of the late Othar E. and Helen L. Mays Bills. She was a graduate of Logan High School and a member of Grace Gospel Church. Dorothy retired as the Office Manager of Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington. She was also preceded by her mother and father-in-law, Hiram and Nancy Marcum. She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Larry A. Marcum, her constant companions Candie the dachshund; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Bills of Lexington, Ky., Sandra and Michael Swackhamer of Parkersburg, W.Va, and Delana R. Bills of St. Albans, W.Va.; three brothers and a sister-in-law, H. Eugene and Florence Bills of Springfield, Ohio, Dusty Bills of Huntington and Mark Bills of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a loving aunt, Dorothy Bills of Rome, Ohio; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and who she loved, and, loved her deeply. The family extends a special thanks to the Doctors and Dr. Charles Meadows, the St. Mary’s Medical Center fourth floor teams 3 and 4 nurses and Pastoral Care. Thomas E. Hobbs
Thomas E. Hobbs, 95, of Huntington departed this world to be with the Lord Thursday, March 27, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Monday, March 31, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Jeff Sizemore. He was born July 29, 1907, in Wayne County, a son of the late Albert Hobbs and Dora Farley Watson. He was a former coal miner and farmer. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Lillie Hobbs, who died in 2001; a son, Carl Hobbs, who died in 1971; and a sister, Ada Kennedy. He was a kind and loving father to his children and stepchildren; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Thearline Hobbs of Kountze, Texas and Eugene and Linda Hobbs of Laporte, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Dan Sherk of Huntington; and six stepchildren, Violet Stover, Delores Gilkerson, Fern Breedlove, Norma Lovejoy, Barbara Prater and Buddy Lambert. He was very proud of his eight grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren, and is survived by a special friend and mother of his children, Irene Lloyd.

Elsie Mae Jones, 93, of Milton, widow of Willey P. Jones, went home to be with be with her Lord Saturday, March 29, 2003. Elsie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, P. and Elnora Jones of Huntington and Robert and Bettie Jones of Katy, Texas; her daughter, Anna H. Dillon of Culloden; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Bias of Burlington, Ohio, and her sister-in-law, Ruth Jones of Huntington. Graveside services were conducted Monday, March 31, 2003, in Culloden Cemetery, with her grandson, Pastor William P. Jones III officiating. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of the arrangements.
Clifford Swann
Clifford Swann passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2003, in Spohn Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born in Milton on August 20, 1925. He was the oldest of four sons of the late Geo. Clifford and Bessie Swann. He is survived by his wife Virginia, daughter Darlene, sons Raymond, Jeffrey and wife Melody, twin granddaughters Justine and Lyndsay, and grandson Taylor Swann; brothers and their spouses Lewis F. and Nancy of Milton, David C. and Patricia of Santa Maria, California, and Joe F. and Phyllis of Hurricane; two nieces, and four nephews. Clifford served in the Army Air Force during World War II, flying 31 combat missions as a B-24 bomber crew member while attached to the 7th Air Force in the Pacific. He was an avid amateur radio operator and was licensed by several countries where he was assigned during his working years. Clifford and David have had a schedule for several years each weekday on 20 meter band. Clifford’s latest call sign was W5SMI. He will be missed by his family and many friends around the world.
Floyd Harless Edmonds
Floyd Harless Edmonds, 68, of Salt Rock, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Salt Rock United Methodist Church by Pastor David Cartwright and the Rev. Ed. Hood. Burial in Gill Cemetery, Salt Rock. He was born April 21, 1934, in Milton, WV, a son of the late Homer Harless Edmonds and Sylvia Barker Edmonds. He was a retired Employee of Owens-Illinois and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joyce White Edmonds; three sons, Frank Edmonds, David Edmonds, and Todd White, all of Salt Rock; one sister, Emogene Black of Milton; one brother, James Edmonds and his wife, Mary, of Ona; and special nieces, Shea and Kirsten White. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Gary Harbour, Todd White, Ronnie Edmonds, Jerry Jobe, Jeff Hamrick, and Michael Steward. Honorary pallbearers were Audie Ramey, Truman Sansom, Denneth Smith and Steve Sansom.
Kenneth Oran Holley
Kenneth Oran Holley, 53, of Barboursville, WV, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Rick Cremeans and the Rev. Robbie Holley officiating. Burial in Highland Cemetery. He was born June 6, 1949, in Huntington, WV, the son of the late James and Sue (Beamon) Holley. He formerly attended Green Acres and was a resident member of VOCA/Rescare. He is survived by one sister, Patricia Dudding and her husband, Roger, of Huntington, WV; two brothers, Clinton Eugene Holley and his wife, Nannette, of Lesage, W.Va., and James Wakefield Holley of Huntington, W.Va; numerous nieces and nephews and a special niece, Barbara Dudding and her son, Tyler. Special thanks to his caregiver, Tara Sayre and to all the Rescare staff for their care and devotion. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Dicie Ellen Gibson, 97, of Barboursville, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by ministers Bob Tucker and Ronnie Wright. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born August 26, 1905, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late William Hamilton Harless and Anna Pauley Harless. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Eugene Gibson; two daughters Virginia Elaine Gibson and Phyllis Jane Gibson, three sisters, Ruth Kuhn, Sylvia Adkins and Elizabeth Janey; and six brothers, Warren Harless, Earl Harless, Thomas Harless, Ernest Harless, Alvin Harless and William Harless. She was a member of Johns Creek Church of Christ. She is survived by six sons and four daughters-in-law, Paul and Elva Gibson, Carl Gibson and Lonnie and Pat Gibson, all of Barboursville, Clifford and Anna Gibson of Proctorville, Ohio, William and Ann Gibson and Jimmy C. Gibson, all of Ona; one sister, Sybil Jacks of Chesapeake, Ohio; one brother, Sydney Harless of Vinton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Robert Mason
Robert Mason, 65, of Huntington passed away March 24, 2003. He was born March 4, 1938 in Highcoal, WV, a son of the late Henry Estel and Erma Jean Cowley Mason. He is survived by one daughter, Erma Jean Gaddy of Indiana; five sisters, Jo Ann Kuhn of Sylvester, WV, Dixie Gillenwater of Hurricane, Dianne Wilborne of Cross Lanes, Joyce Walker and Mary Francis Walker, both of Poca; and one grandchild. George W. Leist
George W. Leist, 85, of Barboursville, passed away Monday, March 24, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 27, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastors Bill Davis and Pete Davidson. Entombment in Ridgelawn Abbey of Remembrance Mausoleum. He was born July 18, 1917, in Barboursville, a son of the late Carl and Louella Baumgardner Leist. He was retired from the C&O Railway and was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of VFW Post #1064 and the American Legion in Huntington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Sibley Sowards Leist, and one brother, Carl Leist Jr. He is survived by one sister, Eula Holley of Ona; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Charlene Leist and Charles and Marie Leist, all of Huntington; two stepsons, Brian Sowards and his wife Sue and Jerry Sowards and his wife Joan, all of Huntington, Jerry, Kurt and Scott Sowards; seven nieces, Teresa Lucas and her husband Doug, Crystal Depriest and her husband Steve, Connie Nicely and her husband Ron, Mary Holley, Jennie Hughes and her husband Tom, Carla Templeton and her husband Paul and Jennifer Aliff and her husband Jimmy; four nephews, Mike Holley, Rickey Holley and his wife Nora, Philip Leist and his wife Nancy, and Kevin Leist; and a special friend, Hughie Cyrus. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Rick Mayes. Burial in Forest Memorial Park. She was born October 30, 1923, in Hurricane, W.Va., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Rena Anne Wallace Searls. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Sponaugle. She is survived by a daughter, Connie Lively of Hurricane; three sons, Robert Wesley Meadows of Hurricane, Darrell Lee Meadows of Culloden and Denver Ray Meadows of Haymarket, Va.; two sisters, Margaret Barker of Culloden and Garnet Cooper of Peru, Ind.; one brother, Lawrence Searls of Hurricane, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
