Alice Goldman, 84, of Hurricane died May 20, 2003 at home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Josie Hurst, and two sisters, Mildred Hurst and Dorothy Booker.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Pekin, Indiana. She was originally from Pekin, coming to Hurricane three years. ago. She was a psychiatric attendant with Evansville State Hospital in Indiana.
Surviving: daughter, Denise Eickbush of Hurricane; grandchildren, Alison and Ben Eickbush of Hurricane; sister, Francis Temple; her caretaker, Renee Barnette and her son, Adam of Hometown.
Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Harold G. Roberts Sr.
Harold Gene Roberts Sr., 59, of Hurricane died May 21, 2003, in SunBridge Nursing Home after a short illness.
He was born November 20, 1943.
Surviving: wife, Mary Ann Simpson Roberts; sons and their wives, Harold Gene Jr. and Kathy Roberts, Allen Lee and Jessica Roberts, all of Hurricane; daughters and their husbands, Tina Marie and John Greene of Dunbar, Roberta Lynn and Roger Casto, Ashley Dawn Stover, all of Hurricane; parents, Luther J. and Julia M. Roberts of Cambridge, Ohio; brothers, Alfred and Donald Roberts, both of Cumberland, Ohio, Homer Roberts of Lawrence, Kansas; sisters, Maime Brandon of Newcomerstown, Ohio, Judy Knox and Betty Bruce, both of Akron, Ohio, Polly Brumbaugh and Nancy King, both of Erwin, Tennessee, and Shirley Weekley of Akron; seven grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Service was held Friday, May 23, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Junior Smith officiating. Burial was in Culloden Community Cemetery, Culloden.
Donald E. Sayre
Donald E. Sayre, 75, of Eleanor died May 21, 2003, at home of mesothelioma.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Anna Sayre, and several brothers and sisters.
He was a Christian and attended First Baptist Church of Eleanor. He was a Marine Corps veteran and served in World War II. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local 33. In 1987, he retired from Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Company.
Surviving: his wife of 53 years, Verjean Jividen Sayre; daughter and her husband, Diana and Al Bird of Clintonville; sons and their wives, Darrell and Beverly of Nitro, Edwin “Eddie” and Diana of Winfield, Jeffery and Sheila of Eleanor; granddaughter and her husband, Kimberly and Tony Martin; grandsons, Michael Sayre and wife, Kimberly, Brian Sayre and wife, Julie, Nathan Sayre and Aaron Knotts; great-granddaughter, Jessica Martin; great-grandson, Hunter Sayre; brother, Frank Sayre of Charleston; sisters, Pauline Barnett of Melbourne, Florida, Janette Winters of Nitro and Maxine Witt of Red House.
Service was held Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastors David Panaro Sr. and David Panaro Jr. officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.

Hilda H. DeLong
Hilda H. DeLong, 79, of Hurricane, formerly of St. Albans, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo and Klaire Wochele Rode.
Surviving: son, R. Dale McCormick of Cross Lanes; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Charles E. Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.
Bernice C. Rumbaugh
Bernice C. Rumbaugh, 88, of Hurricane died May 22, 2003, in Teays Valley Nursing Home and Rehabilitation after a long illness.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was the first Miss Putnam County at the age of 16 in 1930. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Rumbaugh, and sisters, Lucille Kyle, Opal Combs and Zetta Smith.
Surviving: daughters, Nancy Noffsinger of Buffalo and Becky Powell of Cincinnati; sons, Tom Rumbaugh of O’Brien, Florida and John Rumbaugh of Tucson, Arizona; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.
Patrick D. Sargent
Patrick D. Sargent, 63, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Leap officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. He was born April 24, 1940, a son of the late Russell and Nancy Adkins Sargent. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Austin Sargent, Jarrell Sargent, Bill Sargent and Leon Sargent and two sisters, Rita Mae Nichols and Delores Clark. He attended Milton United Methodist Church. Patrick was a florist and interior designer and spent many years living in New Orleans. He touched the lives of many people through his artistic talents and personality. He is survived by four brothers and four sisters-in-law, Leo and Mary Jean Sargent of Milton W.Va., Don and Jean Sargent of Tampa, Fla., Jack Sargent of Milton, Darrell and Thelma Jean Sargent of Milton, and Betty Sargent of Milton; one sister, Lorina Lowe of Huntington and a host of nieces and nephews. Gladys Midkiff Weatherholt
Gladys Midkiff Weatherholt, 84, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Bill Davis. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was born October 19, 1918, in Lincoln County, a daughter of the late Albert Lonzo Midkiff and Sallie Minor Midkiff. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Forest Hedrick Weatherholt, two sons, David Lee Weatherholt and Forest Dan Weatherholt, three brothers and four sisters. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was chair leader for 30 years at the church. She is survived by one daughter, Lola Mae Stratton of Ona; one sister, Allie Newman of Barboursville; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Loren Stratton Julie K. Richardson, David Brian Weatherholt and Bruce Allen Weatherholt; and seven great-grandchildren.
Emma Adeline Self
Emma Adeline Self, 87, of Huntington passed away at her residence on Tuesday, May 20, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Charles Ed Hood and Rev. Manford Cass Hutchinson. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. She was born Feb 28, 1916, a daughter of the late Oscar and Della Mae Vannater McComas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wilson Self. She was a member of the Bloomingdale Baptist Church. She was also a self-employed salesperson, traveling in Kentucky and West Virginia. She is survived by three brothers, Billy S. “Bud” McComas of Salt Rock, Clarence G. “CG” McComas of Huntington and Doliver T. McComas and his wife Thelma of Barboursville; three sisters, Mary Pratt of Salt Rock, Ruby Adkins of Columbus, Ohio, Ruth Bailey and her husband Delbert of Lawrence County, Ohio, one half sister, Gladys Murphy of Largo, Fla.; a host of nieces and nephews; a special little friend, Rebecca Shepherd; and a companion of many years for whom she kept house, Lawton Shepherd. Nephews serveed as pallbearers. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
George Arthur Martin
George Arthur Martin, 65, of Culloden, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, after a short illness. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, May 21, 2003 by the Rev. John Hathaway, followed by burial in the Martin Family Cemetery on Martin Lane in Culloden. He was born December 15, 1937 at Seth, Boone Co., WV, a son of the late Garner Harvey Martin and Beatrice Wright. George was a former worker of hand-crafted glass. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Beatrice Marie Martin in 1959; his first wife, Linda Marie Chapman Martin of Kansas; a brother, Everett L. Martin; an infant brother, Virgil H. and an infant sister, Margaret Ann Martin. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Bretta and Mark Kelso of Ft. Scott, KS, Tamara and Virgil Peck of Peru, KS, a daughter Miriam Biggs of Nevada, MO, and a son and daughter-in-law, George A. and Devetta Martin of Emmett, ID: 14 grandchildren; a sister, Corella Freeman of Culloden; a sister and brother-in-law, Joann and Sebert Huffman of Kenna, WV; a brother and sister-in-law, Otis Mac and Loretta Martin of Milton; a very special friend, Deloris Justice Martin; and a host of nieces and nephews. Helen Taylor Campbell
Helen Taylor Campbell, 56 of Culloden passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at her home after a long illness. She had worked for the Putnam County Environmental Health Department, and was a member of Dunbar First Baptist Church. She was a very loving mother and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lee Campbell; a brother, Jerry Wayne Taylor; and a sister, Marsha Ann Walker. Helen is survived by her daughter, Candy L. Freeman of Culloden; grandchildren, Joshua Thomas Rose and Taylor Danielle Freeman; sisters, Vickie Renee Taylor of St. Albans and Connie L. White of Dunbar. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 17, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Harold B. White Jr. officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Charles Cecil Newman
Charles Cecil Newman, 68, of Bushnell, Fla., formerly of Milton, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 18, 2003, in Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, Fla. He was born Feb. 9, 1935, a son of the late George and Kathleen Vickers Newman. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Mary “Polly” Spencer Newman and brother, George Allen Newman. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and John Newton of Culloden; son, Charles Darrell Newman of Hurricane and his companion, Teresa McNeeley; two grandchildren, Wesley and Ashley Newton; and sister, Opal Morning of Culloden. There was no funeral services. Heck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
George Martin
George Martin, 65, of Culloden died Sunday, May 18, 2003 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was a glassblower at Blenko Glass. Graveside service was conducted Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in Martin Cemetery, Culloden. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.
N. Ruth Morehouse
N. Ruth Morehouse passed away May 19, 2003, in Plano, Texas. Ruth was born March 21, 1920, in Lesage, W.Va., to William Henry Morehouse and Lillie Callicoat Morehouse. She was employed for 37 years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington W.Va., division. After retiring, she became active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, assuming the position of President of Chapter Number 1273, for the years of 1989 and 1990; National Council on the Aging; and the Silver-Haired Legislature, where she was recognized by then-governor Jay Rockefeller, for her efforts. In 1985, Ruth followed her daughters to Plano, Texas, where she relished in her two greatest passions, family and nature. She is survived by daughter, Peggy McBrayer and son-in-law, Charles “Bud” McBrayer; daughter, Emma Smith-Dennis and son-in-law, Gary Dennis of Plano, Texas; granddaughters, Elizabeth Ruth Martin, Johanna Jones and Lillie Ruth Dennis; sister, Mary Carson of Lantana, Fla., and brother, Joe Morehouse of Huntington; and four great-grandsons. A memorial service celebrating Ruth’s life was held May 21, 2003, at Ted Dickey Funeral Home Chapel, Plano, Texas.
Iva M. Gillispie
Iva M. Gillispie, 81, of Winfield died May 12, 2003, in SunBridge of Putnam.
She was born January 17, 1922, daughter of the late Jesse and Ida Henson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William “Fat” Gillispie, and a brother, Mervin Henson.
Iva lived most of her life in Winfield. She was a homemaker and domestic worker. She was a member of Fraziers Bottom United Methodist Church.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sharon Gillispie of Hurricane; daughters and sons-in-law, Mae and Aubrey Erwin, Pattie and Kenneth Watson, all of Winfield, and Caroline King of Hurricane; brother, Jesse Henson of Lesage; sisters, Ruth Poole of Hurricane and Clara Chandler of Fraziers Bottom; grandsons, Buck, David, Mark and John Erwin, Kenneth Watson, Billie and Shawn Gillispie, and Chris King; granddaughters, Joyce Wray and Roxanna Hawkins; 10 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Charlie Moses officiating. Burial was in Mount Union Cemetery, Pliny.
Emory H. Graley
Emory Hughie Graley, 84, of Winfield died May 11, 2003, in Teays Valley Center after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Sadie Alshire Graley; his wife of 62 years, Helen Margaret Richard Graley; son, Carles H. Graley; grandson, Hank Graley; granddaughter, Missy Foster; and brothers, Emmitt, Earl and Everette.
He was a retired, self-employed contractor, an avid baseball player and enjoyed camping and fishing.
Surviving: sons and a daughter-in-law, Charles and Shirley Graley of St. Albans and Emory Graley Jr. of Alum Creek; daughters and sons-in-law, Midge and Sonny Ball, Doris and Leon Moore, Becky and Jerry Foster, all of Winfield; brothers, the Rev. Ezra Graley Jr. and Bill Graley, both of St. Albans; sisters, Delcie Snodgrass and Jenny Brown, both of St. Albans, Grace Rabel of Alum Creek, and Phyllis Kinzer of Tampa, Florida; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; many loving nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with the Rev. Ezra Graley Jr. and the Rev. Danny Kinder officiating. Burial was in Midkiff Cemetery, Sumerco.
Ivan Hope Fisher
Ivan Hope Fisher, 76, of Hurricane died suddenly May 13, 2003 at home.
He was retired from Avtex Fibers, Nitro, and was a former employee of A-Z Shopwise, Hurricane. He was a veteran of the United States Army and lived most of his life in Putnam County.
Surviving: wife, Nina Fisher; grandchildren, Clifton Scott Clark of Hurricane, Ryan Thomas Clark and Ashley Marie Clark, both of upstate New York; sister, Velma Sowards of Hurricane; brother, Vernon “Pete” Fisher of Hurricane.
Service was held Friday, May 16, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Mr. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Gladys I. Thornton
Gladys I. Thornton, 76, of Red House died May 14, 2003 at home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston H. Thornton.
She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving: children and their spouses, Gilbert and Phyllis Thornton of Red House, Donna and Walter Wilson of Florida, Roger and Gail Thornton of Red House, Sue and Billy Wick of Bancroft, Richard and Jackie Thornton of Red House; sisters, Helen Wright of Bancroft and Margie Spears of Red House; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Avalee M. Atkinson
Mrs. Avalee Mae Atkinson, 77, of Hometown died May 15, 2003, at the home of her daughter-in-law, after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born December 16, 1925, she was a Christian, loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Err “Napper” Atkinson, son, William Atkinson, grandson, Timothy Atkinson, daughter-in-law, Brenda Atkinson, and brother, Norman Harrison.
Surviving: son, Archie Atkinson and his companion, Diane Turley of Hometown, daughter-in-law, Sue Liptrap Atkinson; granddaughters, Robin Wagner and her husband, Norman of Leon, Rhonda Atkinson and her companion, Jeremy Barnette of Winfield; brother, Gary Harrison an wife Futh of Gahanna, Ohio; special niece, Sharon Borlwe of Eleanor; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Mount Zion Church, Liberty, with the Rev. Jerry Ranson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
