Billie Saunders
Billie Saunders, 74, of Hurricane died at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a retired librarian for Putnam County with 28 years of service. She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Hurricane Women’s Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Saunders.
Surviving: daughter, Jane Saunders of Washington D.C.; son, Mark Saunders of Hurricane; daughter-in-law, Ginger Johnson of Hurricane; grandchild, Madison of Hurricane.
A memorial service was held Monday, May 19, 2003, at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Her body was cremated. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Bonnett
Mabel Meadows Bonnett, 91, of Scott Depot died Sunday, May 18, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was a Christian and formerly attended Abney Street Church of God, St. Albans. She loved gospel music and sang in quartets with her husband in earlier years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Olen, son, Jack, grandson, Gil Bonnett, parents, George and Leota Meadows, four sisters, and one brother.
Surviving: son, James of St. Albans; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Mike Hill of Scott Depot; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Abney Street Church of God, St. Albans, with the Rev. Wayne Burch and the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.
Bernard E. Oxley
Bernard Elmer Oxley, 92, of Hurricane died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at the Clark Personal Care Home, Milton, following a long illness.
He was born February 23, 1911 in Burnside, Putnam County, the son of John Peter and Harriet Bird Oxley. He was a retired farmer and served as head custodian at Hurricane High School for 14 years. He attended Prividence Primitive Baptist Church in Cross Lanes.
He was preceded in deatH by his wife of 59 years, Lena Garnet Oxley; six brother and three sisters.
Surviving: son, Archie L. Oxley of Hurricane; daughter, Lula Bell Oxley of Hurricane; brothers, Leonard Thornton of Crystal River, Florida and Howard Thornton of Franklin, Ohio; sisters, Catherine Coyner of Beverly Hills, Florida and Edith Johnson of Middletown, Ohio; two grandchildren, Bart Oxley and Deborah Oxley, both of Hurricane; one great-grandchild, Benjamin Oxley of Hurricane.
Service was held Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Allen Funeral home, Hurricane, with Elder Willard Bird and Elder Lewis Johnson officiating. Burial was in Bird Cemetery, Hurricane.
Calvin Chapman
Calvin Chapman, 91, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on May 17, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in the Neal Cemetery. He was born April 17, 1912, in Mason County, W.Va., a son of the late Alexander and Rhoda Ann Conrad Chapman. He was retired from Blenko Glass and was the husband of the late Rosie Violet Neal Chapman. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Vina Chapman; twin brother, Alvin Chapman; and three brothers, Lindsey and Mervin Chapman and a baby brother. He is survived by one daughter, Louise Chapman Hodge of Milton; two granddaughters, Pam Cremeans of Milton and Cathy Hatfield and her husband Percie of Milton; two grandsons, James Calvin “Jimmy” Chapman and Rex Hodge and his wife Lisa of Milton; six great-grandchildren, Calvin Lee “C.L” and Amanda Hatfield, Jamie and Jeremy Chapman, Adam Anderson and Alyssa Hodge of Milton; and special nieces, Diana Jean, Anna, Joyce and Vickey. Beatrice Marie Bowen
Beatrice Marie Bowen, 69, of Huntington went home to be with the Lord Saturday, May 17, 2003. She was born April 28, 1934, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Archie and Lena R. Wintz Watts. She was also preceded in death by a son, Verlin Adkins; a grandson, Christopher Watts; and a brother, Archie Andrew Watts. She attended Hebron Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Irvin L. Bowen; two sons and daughters-in-law, William “Gig” and Brenda Watts of Huntington and Jerry Bowen of Huntington and Cathy Bowen of Champion, Mich.; and five grandchildren Brandon and Ryan Watts and Jeremy, Tanya and Josh Bowen. Willard R. “Doc” Brumfield, 59, of Milton, W.Va., died after a sudden illness, Sunday, May 11, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 16, 2003, at Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, with Max Spurlock officiating. Burial in Greenbottom Memorial Park. He was born April 14, 1944, in Cabell County, W.Va., a son of the late Willard Edward and Lillian Marie Crawford Brumfield. He was a construction worker and was the former owner of W&S Logging of Lesage, W.Va. He was a life member of Teamsters Union Local 505 and a graduate of Barboursville High School in 1962. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Chris D. Brumfield, Sr. and Dartha “Dee” Brumfield of Lesage, W.Va., Robert Darren Brumfield Sr. and Christina Brumfield of Las Vegas, Nevada, and John Edward and Rebecca Brumfield of Lesage; five grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie Spurlock of Proctorville, Ohio, and Barbara Knight and Beverly Brumfield, both of Lesage; a brother, Jack Brumfield of Tulsa, Okla.; his companion of seven years, Diana Kirk of Milton and a host of nieces and nephews. Eva Looney Smith, 90, of Milton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 12, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1912, in Milton, a daughter of the late Media “Dutch” and Myrza Ball Looney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herbert M. Smith, and a grandson Doug Stevens. Ivan Harding
Ivan Harding, Milton, W.Va., was born April 22, 1922, to Howard Harding and Murrlie Boggess of Sissonville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Edith Harding, who was originally from Clay County, W.Va., his father, Howard Harding, mother, Murrlie Boggess, a very special stepmother, Sarah Milan Harding and brother, Howard Junior. Ivan was a veteran of World War II, landed at Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was there to see France liberated and the Jewish people freed from the concentration camps. He was awarded seven battle stars for World War II, serving in the 42nd field artillery. Ivan retired from Union Carbide at Institute, with more than 32 years of service, and earned the nickname “Pusher”, as he started at Carbide pushing the broom. He never lived down that nickname. Ivan is survived by one son, Dale W. Harding; two grandsons, Sgt. Jeffrey Harding, serving with the 21st CTC in Afghanistan, and Darren Scott Harding of Milton; two great-grandchildren, Danielle Kimberly Harding and Darren Scott Jr. He is also survived by three sisters, Lilly Harding of Sissonville, Dilly Campbell of Belle, W.Va., and Phyllis Mullins of Mammoth; a brother Calvin Harding of Sissonville and a very special caregiver, Glenn Edward Kidd of Milton. Ivan attended Bias Chapel Church of Milton, where he loved his God and his brothers and sisters in Christ. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, W.Va., by Pastor Forrest Cummings. Burial in Forest Memorial Park with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #139, Milton.
Katherine G. Wade
Katherine G. Wade, 80, of Huntington, WV, died Monday, May 12, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Services were held on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 in White Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with Rev. Dr. John R. Sauvage officiating. Burial followed. She was born September 18, 1922, in Huntington, a daughter of the late James and Esther Shaw Gillespie. Claude William "Bill" McCallister
Claude William "Bill" McCallister, 78, of Barboursville passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at St. Marys Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. May 9, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and chapel in Barboursville by pastor Bob Ray and the Rev. Richard Black. Burial will be in Enon Cemetery He was born June 9, 1924, at Martha, the sone of the late Claude Boston and Virginia McCallister. He was a retired employee of Kraft Foods and a member of Mount Calvary Church and had recently attended Cyrus Creek Baptist Church. He was a signalman in the U.S.Navy Armed Guard in WWII, having served in the American, European and Mediterranean theatres of war. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Johnson McCallister, two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda Collisn of Hutnington and Kathy and Jerry Grim of St. Louis, Mo., five grandchildren, Michael, Jacob, Mark Cameron and Sara Elizabeth Collins, and David and Daniel Grim, stepgranddaughter, Sheri Orktiese and greatgranddaughter Karleigh Elisabeth Collins. He was loved by many people and will be missed by all who knew him.

Ronald G. Buck, 58, of Leon died May 5, 2003, in Pleasant Valley Hospital following a long illness.
He was a retired electrician from Georgia Electric and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.

Emory L. Stutler, 59, of Red House died May 5, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
He was co-owner/operator and president of E&L Inc., Red House, a member of Grandview Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with Company C 36th Engineer Battalion 20th Engineer Brigade.

Delta Mae Jones
Delta Mae Jones, 82, of Winfield died May 6, 2003, in Teays Valley Center, Hurricane, following a long illness.
She was born June 14, 1920, daughter of the late Virgil W. and Effie M. Jones.
She was a 1939 graduate of Winfield High School and was retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Company in Pt. Pleasant and Charleston.
Surviving: sisters, Wilma Roger of Houston, Texas and Doris King of Bancroft; brothers, Virgil W. Jones of Piqua, Ohio and Ernest H. “Sonny” Jones of Huntington; four nephews and six nieces.
Service was held Friday, May 9, 2003, at Chapman-Erskine Funeral Home, Winfield, with Pastor David Johns of Winfield Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.
Virginia Dare Chapman
Virginia Dare Sovine Chapman, 80, of Hurricane died May 5, 2003.
She was born July 12, 1922 in Hurricane, daughter of the late William Hobart and Birdie Dare Mitchell Sovine. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward M. Chapman Jr., and son-in-law, Darrell L. Welker.
She was a graduate of Hurricane High School and Marshall College. She began her teaching career in Pt. Pleasant in 1943. She then returned to Hurricane where she was an English teacher and band and choral director at Hurricane High School and English teacher at Hurricane Middle School until her retirement in 1982.
She was a member of Theta Rho and Alpha Zi Delta sororities at Marshall. She served the community and Putnam County in many ways. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane where she was choir director for 19 years. She was a member of Hurricane Junior Women’s Club and Hurricane Women’s Club, past director of the Hurricane Civic Chorus, past member of the WVEA, NEA and WVMEA. She also served as Democratic Committeewoman of Putnam County.
She was a passionate Marshall football fan. She also loved Marshall, Kentucky and Duke Basketball. She enjoyed playing cards with lifelong friends and some she me along the way. She was a lady with class in every way and will be dearly missed by her family and her many, many friends.
Surviving: daughters and their husbands, Melanie and Richard Smith and Kimberly and Michael Edwards, all of Hurricane; grandsons, Jeremy and Jared Welker and Christ, Casey and Cody Edwards.
Service was held Friday, May 9, 2003, at First Baptist Church, Hurricane, with Dr. Charles Hendricks and the Rev James McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Susie May Boggess
Susie May Boggess, 79, of Scott Depot died May 8, 2003 at CAMC General Hospital.
Surviving: husband, Carl F. Boggess; daughter, Donna S. Sanderson of Bedford, Indiana; sons, Keith L. Boggess of Fraziers Bottom and Kenneth D. Boggess of Winfield; sisters, Alice Baier of Zephyrhills, Florida and Edith Bender of Bradenton, Florida; brothers, Gene Loring of Winfield and Bob Loring of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren, Angela Page, Matthew Boggess, Sarah Boggess, Kevin Boggess, Brian Boggess, Christopher Sanderson, and Carly Sanderson; great-grandson, Noah Boggess.
Private burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Thelma A. Ball
Thelma Alta Shamblin Ball, 85, a resident of Teays Valley Manor of Hurricane and formerly a lifelong resident of Cabin Creek and Chlyan, died May 8, 2003.
Born September 4, 1917 to the late Ernest and Beulah Diff Shamblin, she was married to Clennie James Ball for 52 years before his death in 1992. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Moran.
She grew up in the Jackson County area and graduated from Ripley High School. She was a member of Cabin Creek Presbyterian Church.
Surviving: children, James Ball and his wife, Ginny of Fredricksburg, Virginia, Andy Ball and his wife, Donna of Hurricane, Larry Ball and his wife, Brenda of Kingsport, Tennessee, Mary Lou Baker and her husband Dave of Fredricksburg and Diana Armstrong and her husband, Henry of Beckley; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank, with the Rev. Larry Ball officiating. Burial was in Montgomery Memorial Park, London.
