Janet Mae Wallace
Janet Mae Hartley Wallace, 69, of Eleanor died April 22, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital following a short illness.
She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Selic and Delva Hartley, stepson, Barry Wallace, and a daughter.
Surviving: husband, James “Jiggs” Wallace; daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Tom Snyder of Eleanor, Peggy and Jim White of Aurora, Colorado; son, Michael “Buckeye” Wallace of St. Albans; stepson and wife, Jim and Regina Wallace of Teays Valley; sisters, Mary Smalley of Hometown and Annabelle Fouts of Dunbar; brother, Bob Hartley of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Nikkie Green, Cassie Wallace, Jessica White, Cody Dennis, Andy Wallace, Jason Wallace, Barry Scott Wallace and Todd Wallace Bailey; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Friday, April 25, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating. Burial was in Beech Grove Cemetery, Eleanor.
Jean Higginbotham
Jean Crago Higginbotham, 64, of Hurricane died April 24, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.
She was retired from the West Virginia Rehab Center, Institute, after 20 years of service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a 1956 graduate of St. Albans High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald L. Higginbotham, brother, Rex Crago, daughter, Teresa Lynn Higginbotham, and parents, Gordon and Bessie Crago.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, David and Leslie Higginbotham of Hurricane; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Ralph Langley of Hurricane; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Beverly Crago of Charleston; grandchildren, Derek, Alex and Ethan Langley, Kara and Lea Higginbotham; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Pete Thompson officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Hada S. Gritt
Hada Susanne Lunsford Gritt, 89, of Midway died Friday, April 25, 2003, at home following a long illness.
She was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and founded Gritt’s Midway Greenhouse with her husband. She worked daily in the greenhouse until the age of 86. She was a talented rug weaver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Gritt Jr., parents, Mary and Hugh Lunsford, brothers, Hugh, Hollis and Herman Lunsford, sisters, Hazel Jividen, Helen Lunsford, Hilda Lunsford and Hilda Gritt, and great-grandson, Aaron Higginbotham.
Surviving: son, James Gritt of Midway; daughters, Anna Craig and Mary Paxon, both of Midway; sister, Hattie King of Eleanor; grandchildren, Penny Goff, Robin Craig, Gary Higginbotham, Ronda Crist, Cindy Painter, Rena Kildall, Joy Moody, Billy Gritt, Nikki Gritt and Toni Gritt; 10 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Midway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Cochran and the Rev. Kenneth Coon officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
James P. “Doc” Neary
James P. “Doc” Neary, 68, of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in Chambersburg Hospital.
Born September 5, 1934 in Winfield, he was a son of the late James A. and Anne Toler Neary.
He was a retired master sergeant, having served in the United States Army for over 20 years. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He was preceded in death by brother, Lawrence and Robert Neary.
Surviving: son, David Neary of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; daughter, Melissa Ballinger of Radcliff, Kentucky; brother, Frank Neary fo Winfield; sisters, Doris Maddox of Scott Depot and Mary Ellen Sturgis of Locust Hill, Virginia; special companion, Alice Starliper of Shippensburg; four grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.
There was no public service. Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg, was in charge of arrangements.
Virginia L. Gregory
Virginia L. Gregory of Scott Depot died Thursday, April 24, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital, following a long illness.
She was born June 27, 1924 at Widen. She served in the United States Navy and was a graduate of Morris Harvey College. She was a retired school teacher and a member of Nitro Eastern Star.
Surviving: husband, Loyd Gregory; daughter, Nola Ann Gillenwater of Dunbar; stepsons, Winston Gregory and Howard Gregory, both of Teays Valley; stepdaughter, Donna Thumm of Virginia; brothers, Bill Groves of Atwater, Ohio, Clifton “Kip” Groves of Parma, Ohio, and Elmer Groves of Tampa, Florida; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Monday, April 28, 2003, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Pamela Eliason officiating.

Louella Eva Lively
Louella Eva Lively, 86, of Hurricane died April 25, 2003, at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Known as “Maw” and “The Flower Lady from Tanner Street,” she was born December 7, 1916 on Poplar Fork in Putnam County, a daughter of the late Cavness and Mary Ethel Duncan. She attended the Hurricane Church of Christ and supported several religious organizations, especially children’s ministries and veterans organizations.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Denver Calvin Lively; grandson, Jason Lee Sowards, sisters, Marie Gillispie and Della Duncan, brothers, Mervin, Herman, Wilbert and Norman Duncan.
Surviving: daughters, Shirlee Lively of Hurricane, Marcell Sowards and husband, Delma; sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin David and Alpha Lively of Hurricane, Larry Lincoln and Lana Lively of Vinton, Ohio; sister, Helen Duncan of Winfield; 16 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; many nieces and nephews; special caregivers, Josephine Hardin and Othema Higginbotham, and many friends.
Service was held Monday, April 28, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Tim Gilfen officiating. Burial was in Duncan Family Cemetery, Hurricane.
Leonard E. “Doc” DeLancy
Leonard E. ‘Doc” DeLancy, 83, of Barboursville, widower of Beatrice Trent Rice DeLancy, passed away Saturday, April 26 2003, in St Mary’s Medical Center. Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in Woodmere Abbey of Remembrance, Woodmere Memorial Park with the Rev. Ed Grant and Rev. Ralph Sager officiating. Entombment in the South Garden of Faith. He was born March 12, 1920, in Huntington, a son of the late Joshua and Edna DeLancy. He was a member of Steele Memorial United Methodist Church and VFW Post #9738, whose members conducted Military Graveside Rites. He was a retired Carman with the former C&0 Railway and a veteran, having served in Europe during World War II. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. He is survived by a stepson and daughter-in-law, Fred and Elizabeth Rice of Barboursville; two grandchildren Kelly Shivel of Huntington and Bret Rice of Maysville, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Kristina Shivel, Harry Shivel III and Elizabeth Reynolds and her spouse Jason; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim Joe Earls
Jim Joe Earls, 63, of Barboursville passed away Saturday, April 26, 2003, in St Marys Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Dr. Ed Grant and the Rev. Ralph Sager. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born March 13, 1940, a son of the late Ernest and Leslie Parsley Earls. He was a graduate of Huntington High School, member of the Huntington Police Department, former Chief of Police of Barboursville, a retired employee of the West Virginia Tax Department and presently a Cabell County Magistrate. He was also active in Golden Gloves, recognized as a national referee with Golden Gloves, a past president of the National Golden Gloves Referees Association, a member of the Barboursville Lions Club and a member of the Steele Memorial United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, June Ellis and Callie Carson; and his brothers, Clyde Earls and John Earls. He is survived by his wife, Judy Asbury Earls; one son, Jimmie J. Earls II of St. Louis, Mo.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy Crockett of Huntington and Jamie and Mark Duncan of South Point, Ohio; one sister, Sybil Ford of Texas; four brothers, Earnest Earls Jr. of Proctorville, George Earls of Pennsylvania, Ira Jerry Earls of Huntington and Mike Earls of Lesage; two grandchildren, Leslie and Patrick Crockett; and his dear friends, Theo and Miss Daisy. Pallbearers were Larry Bailey, Tony Short, Alan Meek, Dave Clark, David Pancake, Joe Boswell and Herb Cougar. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
Joyce Darlene Adkins Eplion Bleigh
Joyce Darlene Adkins Eplion Bleigh, 61, of Huntington, formerly of Weston, W.Va., died Thursday in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a Nurse Aid and caregiver. Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Pugh of Huntington; three sons, James Eplion of South Point, Ohio, Timothy Eplion Huntington and Michael Eplion of Barboursville; her stepmother, Loretta Adkins of Ceredo; and two brothers, Boyce Adkins of Huntington and Royce Gibson of Florida. Graveside services were held 1 p.m. Monday in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Barboursville. Chapman’s Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.
Wanda Niday Moore
Wanda Niday Moore, 75, of Huntington wife of the late John H. Moore, passed away Friday, April 25, 2003, in Heartland of Riverview. Funeral services were held 2. p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Beard Mortuary, with Dr. Allen Reasons officiating; burial in Spring Hill Cemetery. She was born July 29,1927, in Huntington, the daughter of the late Floyd L and Nona G. Trout Niday. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd Lee Niday Jr. and Paul Don Niday; and two sisters, Louise Niday Settlemeyer and Edith Gay Pettus. She was a 1945 graduate of Huntington East High School, retired from Huntington Publishing Company and a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Wanda is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kandi Moore Bickett and Kenny Bickett of Houston, Texas; a son John L Moore of Huntington; two grandchildren, Daniel and Allison Bickett of Houston; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Niday of Lavalette and Frances Niday of Barboursville; and numerous loving friends and family. Hazel Loraine Hatfield
Hazel Loraine Hatfield, 78, of Barboursville, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Robert Hatfield. Burial in Green Valley Cemetery. She was born August 15, 1924, in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Charlie and Amalda Moran Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hatfield. Rev. John Clyde Presley
The Rev. John Clyde Presley, 59, of Huntington, W.Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Tuesday, April 22, 2003. at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Friday 11 a.m. at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev Herb Nida and the Rev. Johnny Terry. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born September 21, 1943, in Fort Gay, W.Va., a son of the late John Presley and Ida Ball Presley. The Rev. Presley was the Pastor of Beulah Chapel FWB Church in Ona, W.Va. He was formerly employed by Guyan Golf and Country Club. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Jack, Harmey, Herman, Milton, and Paul Presley; two sisters, Berdie Diamond and Ettie Mae Justice.
He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Letha Ratliff Presley; five daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Danny Ross of Salt Rock W.Va., Erma “Marie” and Alan Brown of Barboursville, W.Va, Lisa and Dale McCallister of Barboursville, W.Va, Lois and Kevin Chaney of Lavalette WVa, and Mary and Mike McCallister of Barboursville, WV; one son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Renee Presley of Barboursville, WVa.; 11 treasured grandchildren, Lee and Kris Ross, Britney, Adam and Sean Tyler Brown, Joshua and Victoria McCallister, Breanna and Cheyenne Presley, and Scotty and Brady McCallister; four sisters, Lona Mae Peck of Columbus, Ohio, Gertude Marcum of Vinton, Ohio, Margie Maynard of Columbus, Ohio, and Louise Bowens of Columbus, Ohio; many beloved nieces and nephews, a host of brothers and sisters in Christ; three very special “adopted” children; James Hughes, Becky Dingess, and Helen Smith; and a multitude of “adopted” grandchildren.

John V. Brown
John Vandall Brown, 52, of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2003. Born in Milton, W.Va. John was the son of the late Luther and Ruby Brown, and retired as a Petty Officer First Class from the U.S. Navy. He was of Protestant faith and a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of D.A.V. Chapter #20 and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Estrella A. Brown; two daughters, Yolanda A. Ennis and her husband Jeffrey of Reedsville, W.Va., and Erma A. Moreno and her husband Fred of Virginia Beach; two sons, Noel Deomania and his wife Nelda of Virginia Beach and Ernesto Deomania and his wife Imelda of Virginia Beach; a sister, Sylvia Mohr and her husband Bill of Milton, W.Va.; two brothers, Howard Brown and his wife Glenna, and Mike Brown and his wife Wanda both of Milton W.Va. and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Jenkins. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel by Pastor Fred Moreno. Graveside service was conducted Friday April 25, 2003 in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA. Jonathan Edward Dunfee
Jonathan Edward Dunfee, 24, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away in a tragic automobile accident Sunday, April 20, 2003, in Huntington, W.Va. Jonathan will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Wallace Mullins Jr. officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born October 5, 1978, in Huntington, W.Va., the son of Randall Edward and Deborah Lynn Jones Dunfee of Huntington, W.Va. He was a salesman with Fabric Town Interiors. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harvey and Eloise Dunfee and Cecil and Scharlie Jones. He is also survived by one sister, Renee Dunfee Vaughn and her husband Wayne of Huntington, W.Va.; one very special niece, Miranda Brooke Vaughn of Huntington, W.Va.; a special friend, Lauren Spindel and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
