Jack L. Gullion
Jack L. Gullion, 73, of Hurricane died June 10, 2003, at home following a short illness.
He was born April 8, 1930 in Charleston, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.I. Gullion. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Facemire of St. Albans.
He was a 1949 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and attended Morris Harvey College. He served from 1951 to 1953 in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
He was employed by Goodrich Gulf Chemical for 13 years in plant protection as a guard. He retired from Union Carbide after 20 years of service as a dispatcher and truck driver in the Construction Transportation Group.
He was a member of Mount Salem United Methodist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: his loving wife, Ella Mae Gullion of Hurricane; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Paul Payne of Nitro; son and daughter-in-law, Darren and Anita Gullion of Hurricane; grandson, Michael Gullion; stepson, Jeff Dunlap of Hurricane.
Service was held Friday, June 13, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Paul Baldwin and Pastor Ron Bailey officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery, Hurricane.
Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Gerald R. Jividen
Gerald R. Jividen, 76, of Buffalo died June 15, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Rachel Jividen, two brothers, a sister, and a granddaughter.
He was retired from Avtex Fibers, Nitro, and Process Instruments Inc., Cross Lanes.
Surviving: wife, Audrey Jividen; daughter and her husband, Linda L. and Ralph Wayne Whittington of Buffalo; son and his wife, Gerald L. “Jerry” and Linda Jividen of Vienna; brother and his wife, Glenn and Betty Jividen of Nitro; sister-in-law, Clara B. Jividen of Ypsilanti, Michigan; granddaughters, Rachel and Emily Jividen of Vienna; grandsons and their wives, David and Mary Ann Whittington of Hazlet, Texas, Mark and Alisha Whittington of Buffalo; great-grandchildren, Jericho, Ivy and Caleb Norris, all of Vienna; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Tim Day officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Pearl W. Johnson
Pearl W. Johnson, 74, of Hurricane died June 16, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital following a long illness.
She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughter, Brenda J. Johnson of Hurricane; son, Barry J. Johnson of Hurricane; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Elder Ronald K. Crouch and Elder James Lewis Johnson officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Gary Michael Deal
Gary Michael Deal, 50, of Poca died June 18, 20032, in Ohio State University Hospital East.
Surviving: mother, Audrey Deal of Poca; children, Crystal Thornton of Poca and Gary Deal of Kentucky; sisters, Annette Holston of Bancroft and Geneva Hedrick of Poca; brother, Richard Deal of Dunbar; grandson, Brandon Thornton.
Service was held Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Jeff Arthur officiating. Burial was in Big Cherry Cemetery, Poca.

Helen I. Hawkins
Helen I. Covert Hawkins, 87, of Red House died June 19, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.
She was a homemaker, a retired elementary school teacher for Putnam County Schools with 11 years of service, and a member of Shiloah Church, Red House, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, O.V. and Lottie Covert, her husband, Roy C. Hawkins, and two brothers.
Surviving: daughter, Carol Hartley of Red House; son, Donald Hawkins of Red House; brother, the Rev. Arles Covert of Midway; sisters, Ethel Bailey of Nitro, Laurene Lyons of Red House, and Frances Mallett of Red House; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Shiloah Church with Pastor Larry Covert and the Rev. Danny Mallett officiating. Burial was in Shiloah Cemetery. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Louis L. Wright
Louis L. Wright, 71, of Midway died June 19, 2003, at VA Medical Center, Huntington, after a long illness.
He was a past employee of Shippers Carline, Red House, and Hartley’s Greenhouse, Eleanor. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Captain James A. Wright and Lille Mae Arthur Wright; sisters, Shirley Parsons and Phyllis Ann McClure.
Surviving: brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Nina Wright of Winfield; several nieces and nephews; special friend, James Kimberling.
Service was held Sunday, June 22, 2003, at Chapman-Erskine Funeral Home, Winfield, with the Rev. Doug McComas officiating. Burial was in Mt. Union Cemetery, Pliny.

Utauka “Talkie” Hughes
Utauka “Talkie” Hughes, 76, of Hurricane, formerly of Madison, died June 19, 2003, at Heartland of Charleston following an extended illness.
Born July 25, 1926 at Low Gap, she was the daughter of the late Noel and Gracie Holstein Ball. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard J. Hughes.
She was a former social worker for the state of West Virginia with 31 years of service, working in Boone and Putnam counties. She was a member of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: son and daughter-in-law, David and Suzanne Hughes of Seth; grandsons, Richard and wife, Elma of Seth, Rusty and wife Amy of Galt, California; granddaughters, Terri and husband Kevin Comer of Charleston and Hollie of Seth; great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Clay, Colton, Vivian and Andrew; sister, Lucille Lively of Orlando, Florida; brother, Joe Ball of Cleveland, Ohio.
Service was held Monday, June 23, 2003, at Stevens Funeral Home, Madison, with the Rev. Tom Bias officiating. Burial was in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.

Mary Inez Beaver
Mary Inez Thomas Beaver, 83, of Hurricane died June 21, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a member of Scary Freewill Baptist Church and attended Hurricane Church of God. She was a member of Hurricane Senior Citizens and Winfield Community Action Board. She was a self-employed housekeeper and a lifelong resident of Hurricane.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Lee Thomas and Lena Catherine Snyder, her husband, Frank Beaver; sister, Norma Boster, and brother, Willard Thomas.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Jewell and Daniel Malik of Ashland, Kentucky; daughter, Connie Thomas of Culloden; son and daughter-in-law, David and Carol Thomas of Wichita, Kansas; stepsons, Bennie Beaver of San Diego, California, Richard Beaver of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and Gerald Beaver of Culloden; sisters, Lillian Ferrell of Hurricane, Cora Thomas of Hurricane and Thelma Clark of Culloden; brothers, Bernie Thomas of Southern Pines, North Carolina and Henry Thomas of St. Albans; grandchildren, Melissa Stevens, Matthew Henry, Wendy Thomas, Elisabeth Malik, Abigail Malik and Nathan Henry; great-granddaughter, Malorie Stevens.
Service was held Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Lee O. “Bob” Morris and the Rev. Walter Allen officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Rex. R. Jones
Rex R. Jones, 71, of Ona, WV, died peacefully at his home Wednesday, June 18, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 21, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Dr. Jerry Warren. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born September 17, 1931, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Homer and Verna Tull Jones. He was a retired employee of Owens-Illinois in Charlotte, Mich., and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict and a graduate of Barboursville High School. He is survived by his wife, Madeline Jarrell Jones, and they shared two daughters and one son-in-law, Drema and Homer Weatherholt and Kathy Howard; four grandchildren, Stacy, Cheri, Heather and Tamara; five great-grandchildren, Kyla, Stasia, Lindsey, Zackary and Brooke; three daughters from a previous marriage, April Teresa and Andrea; and many special friends, including fellow musicians Jerry Emerson and Jake Fields.

Merle Dewain “Dee” Adkins
Merle Dewain “Dee” Adkins, 49, of Barboursville passed away Monday, June 16, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 19, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Chelcie Gibson and Rev. Ray Adkins. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. He was born August 19, 1953, in Huntington, a son of Virgil Adkins of Barboursville and the late Herman Adkins. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Granville Adkins and Joseph Allen Adkins. He was an employee of Steel of West Virginia and was a member of Bethlehem United Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Barboursville High School and was a member of Local Steelworkers of America #37. He was active in the Barboursville and Hite Saunders community where he loved coaching baseball and football. He coached Little League Baseball for 29 years and Midget League Football for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Diane Napier Adkins; three sons, Dewain Allen Adkins of Huntington, Dax Joseph Adkins of Barboursville and Rick Painter of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Brenda McClellan of Lavalette, Drema Dean of Barboursville and Gilbert “Bertie” Simmons of Chesapeake, Ohio; one brother, Herman Adkins Jr. of Barboursville; four grandchildren Katlin, Nick, Logan and Brady and a host of nieces and nephews, several cousins and many friends. “Dee” will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Lonnie Ralph Clagg
Lonnie Ralph Clagg, 80, of Lesage went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 17, 2003. Funeral service were conducted Thursday, June 19, at Heck Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. He was born August 30, 1922, in Milton, a son of the late William and Levada Clagg. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Mount Clagg; an infant son; three brothers and two sisters. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in World War II. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph Dale and Anna Clagg of Milton and Donald and Beverly Clagg of Huntington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Robert Scarberry of Ona and Linda and Terry Henry of Milton; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Aline Clagg of Huntington; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Max Edward Lowe
Max Edward Lowe, 80, of Barboursville, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Craig Coster. Graveside rites at the Highland Memory Gardens, Pecks Mill, W.Va., by Dr. Charles M. Wood II. He was born October 29, 1922, in Logan, W.Va., a son of the late James Thomas and Florence Bell Nelson Lowe. He was retired from Young and Stone Company in Huntington and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and was a member of Barboursville Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Frances Margaret Stankowitz Lowe; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Garry and Sara Lowe of Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Carrie Porter of Logan; and nieces and nephews.

Freeman Porter
Freeman Porter, 80, of Branchland, W.Va., loving husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, died Monday, June 16, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born January 12, 1923, in Branchland, a son of the late Lindsay and Martha Isaac Porter. He was also preceded in death by brothers Sterling, Ray and Jerry, and by sisters, Mary, Dolly and Teresa. He was a retired employee of Connor Steel and was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF&AM and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marjorie Triplett Porter; one son, Joel Craig Porter of West Hamlin; two daughters, Drema Adkins of Barboursville and Gwenona Stacy of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Candace, Ron Jay, Summer, J.C. and Holly; great-grandchild Damon; brother James, Howard, Gilbert and Larry; sisters, Addie, Lucille and Sally. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 19, 2003, at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, W.Va., with Russell Gue officiating. Burial in the Green Valley Cemetery, where Masonic and military burial rites were held.

James E. “Rob” Smith
James E. “Rob” Smith, 44, of Hurricane passed away June 14, 2003, at home, leaving behind his mother, Anoway “Mary” Smith of Hurricane; his father and stepmother, Frank and Betty Smith of Apple Grove; one sister and brother-in-law, Bonita and Keith Tomblin of Culloden; four children Justin, Michael, Brittany and Jamie; a special niece and nephew, Lara and Ryan Blankenship; lifelong friends, Kenny Clark and Jeff McCallister, and a special uncle, Bill Smith. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 19, at Heck Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie Marcum officiating. Burial in Smith-Mays Cemetery, Glenwood. He was born September 26, 1958, in Cabell County, West Virginia. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.

Claud H. Thornburg
Claud H. Thornburg, 84, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Monday, June 16, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sue Jarrett. He was born November 15, 1918, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Howard B. Thornburg and Ersie D. Heffner Thornburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Alice Thornburg; a sister, Sarah Thornburg Fraley; and a son-in-law, Ronald E. Bell. Mr. Thornburg was a retired farmer and local businessman. He was also a member and past president of the Barboursville Lions Club; a member of Huntington BPOE #313; active in Lehigh Acres, Fla., United Methodist Church; Fellowship Bible Class at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church; past president long-time member of the Cabell County Board of Education; past president of the West Virginia Board of Education Association; member of the Barboursville Sportsman Club; and was developer of Guyan Estates, the first large housing subdivision in West Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene Adkins Thornburg; his children and their spouses, Thomas Lee and Rose Thornburg of Barboursville, James Dale and Ann Thornburg of Barboursville, Connie Sue Bell and Gary McLaughlin of Charleston, W.Va., Rosalee and Jim Hodges of Huntington and Sue Ann and Bob McNamara of Fairfax, Va.; grandchildren, Susan and Steve Vance of Ashland, Ky., John and Kerri Thornburg of Ashland, Ky., Kelli Bell of Barboursville, Catherine Thornburg of Florence, Ky., USMC 1st Lt. James D. Jr. and Robyn Thornburg of Hampstead, N.C., Eric and Eileen Hodges of Huntington W.Va., Nick Hodges of Portland, Ore., Brian, Todd and Jennifer McNamara of Fairfax, Va., and Ken and Dawn Nance of Barboursville; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Addison Vance, Alaina, Mary Alice and Christopher Thornburg, Jacob and Elizabeth Nance, Emily, Amber, Cassie and Caleb White, Sebastian Hodge, and Vivian and Isaac Hodges; and a nephew, Howard Fraley and his wife Marian of Warner Robbins, Ga. Junior Odell Hysell, 74, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Milton passed away Saturday, June 14, 2003, in Ohio. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18. 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. Clee Egnor. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born July 3, 1928, in Milton. a son of the late Buster and Mabel Harshbarger Hysell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of American Legion Post #139 Milton. He is survived by his wife, Artie Jane Cremeans Hysell; three stepdaughters, Linda Carnell, Brenda Baranyk and Joyce Grevef, all of Ohio; one sister, Joyce Carol Hayes of Culloden, four brothers, Mike Hysell of Culloden, Darrell Hysell, Richard Hysell and Carl Hysell - all of Milton; five half-sisters, Dreama Tackitt and Karen Hicks, both of Huntington, Kay Hysell and Deven Clark, both of Ona, and Ann Hand of South Carolina; two half brothers, Buster Owen Hysell and James Hysell, both of Milton. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.. Military graveside services were conducted by the American Legion #139 Milton.

Lola E. Persinger
Lola E. Persinger, 80, of Scott Depot died June 9, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glendon F. Persinger.
She attended Rock Branch Independent Church and was a loving mother and grandmother.
Surviving children, Corky Persinger, Dalmes Persinger, John Persinger and Viola Stone, all of Scott Depot; sisters, Myrtle Priddy of Hometown, Violet Thornton of Rockford, Illinois, Beulah Rollins of Beckley, Othena Higginbotham and Dorothy Thornton, both of Red House, and Ruth Thornton of Grandview; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Ernest F. Hawley
Ernest F. “Pug” Hawley, 92, of Hometown died June 9, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Rock Branch, a resident of Hometown since 1960, was retired from FMC Viscose with 35 years of service and attended Hometown Church of God Mission.
Surviving: wife, Othena “Cricket” Flowers Hawley; daughter, Doris Ann Burk of New Mexico; brother, Francis Hawley of St. Albans; nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Ortin Heights Cemetery, Nitro.
