Linda A. Hutton
Linda A. Andruzis Hutton, 52, of Winfield died June 3, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was born December 22, 1950 in Pittston, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Eleanor Andruzis and the late Stanley Andruzis Sr. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Andy and David Andruzis.
She was a graduate of Duke University and was employed by the university following graduation.
She was a retired territory sales manager from Eastman-Kodak and was a former supervisor of nuclear medicine with Thomas Memorial Hospital. She was a former member of the Nuclear Medicine Society, a Christian and a 19-year resident of Winfield.
Surviving in addition to her mother: husband, Carroll L. Hutton; daughter, Jennifer L. Pauley of Winfield; sisters, Joyce and Karen Andruzis, both of Cross Lanes; aunt and uncle, Carol and Peter Franko of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania; uncle and aunt, Edward and Alice Romanoski of Duryea, Pennsylvania; mother-in-law, Kathleen Hutton of Teays Valley; sisters-in-law, Carol Andruzis of Columbus, Ohio and Doris Holmes of Teays Valley; niece, Jacque Andruzis of Columbus; nephews, Michael and Steven Andruzis, both of Cross Lanes, Andrew and Jason Andruzis, both of Columbus.
Service was held Friday, June 6, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Charles V. Williams officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene Building Fund, PO Box 259, Teays WV 25569.

Edna Lee Sterling
Edna Lee Sterling, 87, of Hurricane died June 7, 2003, at her home.
She was born May 21, 1916 in Holcomb, the daughter of the late Guy E. and Myrtle Fleming Leonard. Her husband, David G. Sterling, also preceded her in death.
She was retired from the Putnam County Board of Education, having taught English and French at Hurricane Middle School. Prior to moving to Hurricane, she taught at Duval High School in Lincoln County. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane and a member of the Dorcas Sunday school class.
Surviving: sister, Dortha Jean Currence of Tavares, Florida; nieces and nephews, Arthur Hall of South Grafton, Massachusetts, Roxanne Jones of Aloha, Oregon, Carolyn Frazier, Benita Cain and Michael Leonard, all of Boise, Idaho; special friends and caregivers, Henry and Barbra Ferguson and Bonnie Chapman.
Service was held Monday, June 9, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Dimmie Black
Dimmie Gillespie Black, 91, of Fraziers Bottom died June 6, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.
She attended Five and Twenty United Baptist Church, Fraziers Bottom, was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Wilson Black.
Surviving: nieces, nephews and special friends, Donnie and Brenda Grant, Lisa and Larry Rhodes, Jarrett and Regina Grant, A.J. and Jessica Blankenship, and Linda “Winnie” Alford, all of Fraziers Bottom.
Service was held Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Five and Twenty United Baptist Church. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fraziers Bottom. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Juanita L. Aycock
Juanita Lucille McNece Aycock, of Hurricane died June 3, 2003, after a prolonged illness.
She was born and raised in West Virginia and a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 116. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland to raise her family and pursue a career. After retirement she moved to her native West Virginia with her husband and spent her winters in Largo, Florida.
Surviving: husband, Harry Tracy Aycock III; sons and daughters-in-law, Jay and Kathy Angelucci of Atlanta, Georgia, Rocky and Laura Angelucci of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Anthony, Cera and Laura Angelucci; sisters, Betty Poster of Scott Depot, Lessie Kelly and Wilma Dwyer of Fairmont; many other loving family members.
Service was held Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Father Neil Buchein of Catholic Church of the Ascension as celebrant. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Charles W. Johnson
Charles William Johnson, 59, of Scott Depot died June 5, 2003.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Louise Garland of Florida, and his father, Laymon Johnson of Hurricane.
He was a member of Scott Depot Christ Fellowship and enjoyed being outside with his family and friends on Turkey Creek in Hurricane.
He was a heavy equipment with Turman Construction, Barboursville, and was a member of IUOE No. 132, Huntington.
Surviving: wife, Patty Ann Johnson; daughters and their husbands, Tina and Bruce Cartwright, Tonya Ann and Wade Neal, all of Hurricane; grandchildren, Hannah and Caroline Cartwright, Koby and Karli Neal; three god-children, Allie, Olivia and Wil Richardson of Winfield; uncles, Leslie Johnson of Hurricane and Willard Johnson of Ohio; aunt or number one “mom,” Wynona “Nonie” Smith of Huntington; half-brothers, Curtis Johnson of Missouri, Jeff Johnson of Dunbar and Kemron Johnson of Georgia; half-sister, Letha Johnson of Huntington; god-brother, Bill Bird of Scott Depot; adopted son, Robbie Estep of Hurricane; number two “mom,” Peg Chandler of Hurricane.
Service was held Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Scott Depot Christ Fellowship with Dr. Rodney Taylor officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Turkey Creek, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Jacqueline Ashworth
Jacqueline “Jackie Sue” Ashworth, 67, of Hurricane died Friday, June 6, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane. She was active in Mother’s Day Out Program and loved children.
She was preceded in death by her father, Fred “Red” Coleman.
Surviving: husband, Okey; daughters, Melissa MacMillan of Brandon, Mississippi and Lisa Hatten of Hurricane; son, Fredrick Ashworth of Key West, Florida; mother, Lois Coleman of Hurricane; six grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.
Memorial donations may be made to Hurricane First Baptist Church Building Fund, 2635 Main Street, Hurricane WV 25526.

Hubert R. Beck
Hubert Ray “Dutch” Beck, 74, of Winfield died June 7, 2003.
He was a retired commercial fisherman.
He was the son of the late John T. and Ruth Beck and was also preceded in death by his sister, Clara Long.
Surviving: wife, Dale R. Beck of Winfield; daughters, Sarina Smith of Summersville and Marsha Rhodes of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Rebecca Hamilton of Nitro; grandsons, Michael Smith and Craig Withrow.
Service was held Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Tyler Mountain Funeral home, Cross Lanes, with Pastor Chris Shinn officiating. Entombment was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Opal B. Cardwell
Opal B. Cardwell, 83, of Milton, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. James LeMaster. Burial in Culloden Cemetery. She was born March 11, 1920, in Putnam County, a daughter of the late Harry and Betty Hodges Rogers. She is survived by her husband, Robert Cardwell; children, Linda Ervin of, Florida, Harry Pate of South Carolina, Mark Pate and Agnes LeMaster, both of St. Albans, Harvey Pate of Huntington, Ralph Cardwell of Chicago, and Sharon Watson of Milton; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Brenda Gail Dolen
Brenda Gail Dolen, 52 of Orangeville, Canada, formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 7, 2003. at Wallace Funeral Home an Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Kevin Shull. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. She was born Aug. 27, 1950, in Barboursville, the loving daughter of the Rev. Joe and Kathleen Adkins Dolen of Barboursville; and was the beloved mother of Shelley Insco and her husband John Apreda; loving sister of Ross Dolen and the late Kevin Dolen. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Canadian Osteogenesis Imperfecta Society, 128 Thornhill Circle, Chatham, Ontario, Canada N7L-4M3, and would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Opal B. Cardwell
Opal B. Cardwell, 83, of Milton, wife of Robert Cardwell, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Also surviving are her children, Linda Ervin of Florida, Harry Pate of South Carolina, Mark Pate and Agnes LeMaster, both of St. Albans, Harvey Pate of Huntington, Ralph Cardwell of Chicago and Sharon Watson of Milton; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 7, 2003 at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Culloden Cemetery.

Brenda Dolen
Brenda Dolen, 52, formerly of Barboursville, died June 1, 2003 in Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 7, at Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville; burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Quentin Arthur Curry
Quentin Arthur Curry, 84, born July 21, 1918, passed away at the home of his son on June 3, 2003, after a long illness. Quentin was a veteran of World War II in submarine service and retired from E.I. DuPont Chemical in Belle, W.Va. He was a loving husband and father, and loved his country and community. He also loved the family farm on Lower Mud River, where he lived his entire life and raised his family. He was a Christian and a member of Portersville Missionary Baptist Church of Lower Mud River. Quentin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathryn Marie Jarvis Curry, his mother, Myrtle May Moore Curry, his father, Chester Arthur Curry; two brothers, Wilmont and Ceybert Curry. He is survived by two sisters, Pauline Hall of Salt Rock and Birtha Marie Hayes of Sun City, Ariz.; one daughter, Sue McCallister of West Hamlin; and one son Larry Curry, also of West Hamlin, daughter-in-law Patricia Sue Curry and son-in-law James F. McCallister; five grandchildren, Tracy Vickers of Salt Rock, Jamie Keaton of West Hamlin. Amy McCallister of West Hamlin, Tim McCallister of West Hamlin and Shelly Adkins of West Hamlin; also five great-grandchildren, Clint and Cody Vickers of Salt Rock Drew and Dana Keaton of West Hamlin and Dylan Adkins of West Hamlin. Funeral services were held at Handley Funeral Home in Hamlin. Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 6, 2003. Graveside services were at Enon Cemetery in Salt Rock. Pastor Kim Stone from Freedom Baptist Church in Milton and Pastor David Vickers from Portersville Baptist Church in Portersville, conducted the services. Special thanks to all the caregivers who gave comfort to our dad and also comfort to our family. We also would like to Handley Funeral Home for all they have done for our family in our time of need.

Alphus “Dan” Johnson, Jr.
Alphus “Dan” Johnson, Jr., 63, of Milton went home to be with the Lord, Monday, June 2, 2003, in SunBridge for Putnam, Hurricane. At Dan’s request his body was donated to the advancement of medical education and research to the Human Gift Registry, Marshall University School of Medicine. He was born January 14, 1940, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Alphus “Alf” Sr. and Mae Bays Johnson. He was also preceded in death by two nephews, Lonnie Daniel Johnson and Larry Allen Conner. He was a former construction worker for Messer Construction Charleston, W.Va. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his son and daughter-in-law, Montgomery and Lisa Johnson of Springdale, W.Va.; sister, Pat Nicholas of Milton; brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Joyce Johnson of West Olive, Mich.; granddaughter, Holly Renee Johnson; niece and spouse, Elicia and David Bias; great-niece, Carlie Bias; great-nephew and spouse, Kevin and Charity Conner; great-great-nephew, Josh Conner, great-great-niece, Emily Conner; two wonderful friends, Jim McDonie and Shirley Sunderland. A special thanks to the staff and people of SunBridge of Putnam for their love and care for Dan. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the church or charity of ones choice. Harry Donald Anderson
Harry Donald Anderson, 65, of Huntington, stepped into the presence of his Lord, Sunday, June 1, 2003. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Dwight Mays. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. He was born February 1, 1938, in Flatwoods, Ky., a son of the late Lonnie and Elsie Hackney Anderson. He was the farmer owner of Huntington Furnace and Air Conditioning and was employed by Lyon, Conklin and Co. Inc. He was a graduate of Russell High School in Ky., and was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He attended Christ Temple Church in Huntington. He was preceded in death by one brother, Darrell Anderson. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley Williams Anderson; one son, Dale Anderson and his wife Deniese of Runnemede, N.J.; three daughters, Leah Lewis and her husband Barry of Huntington, Laura Talbert of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Maria Whitman and her husband Chris of Huntington; five grandsons, Dale II, Justin, Aaron, Darien and Andrew of whom he was very proud; two beautiful granddaughters, Lauren Rebecca and Rachel; two sisters, Barbara Rogers of Ashland, Ky., and Sue Kersey of Flatwoods, Ky.; one brother, Bob Anderson of Evansville, Ind.; and a very special extended family of nieces and nephews. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

William F. “Bill” Adkins
William F. “Bill” Adkins, of Huntington, passed away peacefully at home Monday, June 2, 2003. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 5, Beard Mortuary with Pastor Gordon Rutherford officiating; burial in Bowen Cemetery. Full military graveside honors were conducted by VFW 9738. He was born June 28, 1933, in Cabell County, West Virginia, the son of the late F.M. Adkins and Vera Bowen Adkins. Also, preceding him in death a sister, Emma A. Dunn and one nephew, David Miller. Bill was a graduate of Barboursville School class of 1951, a member of Olive Baptist Church, a former Huntington Police Officer, a member of Old Centurion, a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 16, and VFW 1064, Cabell County Venture 40&8. He was sales manager of R.F. Steiner and Company for over 30 years. He is survived by his wife Ardella McClellan Adkins; two sons Terry Lee Adkins and wife Jackie of Apple Grove, W.Va., and Tony Franklin Adkins at home; two grandsons that were very special in his life, Joshua and Hunter Adkins; two sisters, Cynthia M. Adkins of Huntington and Erma L. Miller of Stone Mountain Ga.; and special nieces, nephews and cousins. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Norma Lee Erwin
Norma Lee Erwin, 70, of Huntington passed away Sunday, June 1, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Craig Coster. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born November 23, 1932, in Putnam County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Lon and Edith Lilly Fletcher Racer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert O. Erwin; an infant daughter Joan Evis Erwin; one sister, Gaynell Woods; and two brothers, Buford Racer and Burton Racer. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey O. and Karen Erwin of Barboursville, Carlos and Kim Erwin of Ona; two sisters, Alta Racer of Milton and Myrtle Frampton of St. Albans; two brothers, Ward Racer of Culloden and Roger Racer of St. Albans; five grandchildren Amanda Johnson and her husband Jamie, Zachary Erwin, Marissa Erwin, Tony Erwin and Kesha Erwin; and one great-grandson, Ethan Michael Johnson. The family would like to thank Dr. Amin and her staff, Hospice of Huntington, Dr. Tucker Jennings and the oncology nursing staff at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Avalee M. Atkinson
Mrs. Avalee Mae Atkinson, 77, of Hometown died May 15, 2003, at the home of her daughter-in-law, after a long battle with lung cancer.
Born December 16, 1925, she was a Christian, loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Err “Napper” Atkinson, son, William Atkinson, grandson, Timothy Atkinson, daughter-in-law, Brenda Atkinson, and brother, Norman Harrison.
Surviving: son, Archie Atkinson and his companion, Diane Turley of Hometown, daughter-in-law, Sue Liptrap Atkinson; granddaughters, Robin Wagner and her husband, Norman of Leon, Rhonda Atkinson and her companion, Jeremy Barnette of Winfield; brother, Gary Harrison and wife Ruth of Gahanna, Ohio; special niece, Sharon Bowles of Eleanor; two step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Sunday, may 18, 2003, at Mount Zion Church, Liberty, with the Rev. Jerry Ranson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Hospice Care and especially her nurse and friend, Lori Persinger.

Julie Casto
Julie Mynes Casto, 46, of Morrisville, North Carolina, formerly of Hurricane, died May 22, 2003, after a short illness.
She was a 1974 graduate of Hurricane High School. She attended Calvary Chapel in Apex, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her father, Buster Mynes.
Surviving: husband, Brian Casto; daughter, Laura Casto, at home; mother, Polly Mynes of Hurricane; sister, Jody Rollins of Beckley.
Service was held Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
