Ellen Irene Stover
Ellen Irene Hodges Stover, 77, of Winfield died May 23, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.
She was born June 4, 1925 in Winfield, the daughter of John Elza and Etta Emma Hodges. She was a member of Adda Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Stover; brothers, Hosea, Ercel and Jim, sister, Icel Hodges, and her friend, Carl Erwin.
Surviving: nephew and wife, Bruce and Karen Cottrell of Huntington, and their children, Tiffany, Adam, Nicole and Kimberly; other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service was held Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Eloise Gumm
Mrs. Eloise Larck Gum, 70, of Scott Depot died May 22, 2003, at SunBridge of Putnam.
Preceding her in death are her parents, William Henry and Lula R. Bess Larck, and her brother, William A. Larck.
She was a member of Winfield Church of Christ and was retired from United National Bank, Teays Valley, as an operation officer. She was also a past employee of the former Bank of St. Albans. She was an active member of Putnam County Quilt Lovers Guild.
Surviving: husband, Austin; sisters, Lillian G. Johnson and Margaret “Peggy” Erwin, both of Scott Depot; sister-in-law, Catherine Larck of Scott Depot; four nieces, one nephew, two great-nieces and five great-nephews.
Service was held Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Winfield Church of Christ with Minister George Erwin officiating. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Hurricane. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
Kenneth Dale Boggess
Kenneth Dale Boggess, 54, of Winfield died May 20, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Susie M. Boggess.
He was a former employee of United Technologies.
Surviving: sons, Kevin Boggess of Tennessee and Brian Boggess of Iowa; father, Carl F. Boggess of Scott Depot; sister, Donna S. Sanderson of Indiana; brother, Keith L. Boggess of Fraziers Bottom; grandchildren, Noah and Issac Boggess.
Service was held Friday, May 23, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Rodney Taylor officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Goldie M. Bass
Goldie M. Bass, 98, of Hometown died May 28, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.
Mrs. Bass was a 33-year resident of Hometown, a retired nursing assistant from Brevard County Hospital, Melbourne, Florida, with 15 years of service and was a member of Hometown Church of God Mission.
Surviving: nieces and nephews.
Service was held Friday, May 30, 2003, at Hometown Church of God Mission with Pastor Joe Scarberry and Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in Schowen Cemetery, Bancroft. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.
Lennie Queen
Lennie Murrell Queen, 92, died May 27, 2003, in Teays Valley Nursing Center, Hurricane.
She was born July 16, 1910, one of the first sets of twins born in Milton, a daughter of the late Edwin and Ethel Ryalls Murrell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Owen Queen Sr., six brothers, one sister and three grandchildren.
She was a member of the 1930 graduating class of Grant District High School, Milton, past president of the Heck Bible Class at Milton Methodist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 149, Milton.
She was a loving mother to nine children, grandmother of 30 children and great-grandmother of 29 children.
Surviving: sons and their wives, Owen Jr. and Mary Lou Queen of Pt. Pleasant, Jim and Louisa Queen, Bill and Charlotte Queen, John and Tammy Queen, all of Milton; daughters, Mary Lou Craddock of Hurricane, Roberta McCoy and Nancy Lunsford, both of Milton, Jane Cleghon and husband, John, of Huntington; cousins and many nieces and nephews.
Service was held Friday, May 30, 2003, at Milton United Methodist Church with Pastor Keith Leap officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements.
Zelma Lorraine McCoy
Zelma Lorraine Santrock McCoy, 94, of Caryville, Florida, formerly of Eleanor, died May 25, 2003, in Mariner Health of Bonifay, Florida, following a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac H. “Jack” McCoy.
She was a homemaker and a member of Buffalo Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving: sons, Earl McCoy of Eleanor and Robert McCoy of Dover, Delaware; daughters, Ruby Lamb of Chipley, Florida and Edna Holt of Caryville; daughter-in-law, Genieve McCoy of Cooper City, Florida; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, May 20, 2003, at Buffalo Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Sidney Warner officiating. Burial was in Hein Cemetery, Poca. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
David E. Smithers
David E. Smithers, 56, of Southside died May 25, 2003, at his residence.
He served with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Division in Vietnam, was a former employee of Mountaineer Gas Company and a current employee of Walmart in Cross Lanes.
Surviving: wife, Teresa; son, David E. Smithers II of Washington, Pennsylvania; daughter, Tonya R. Molek of Bentleyville, Pennsylvania; mother, Emmadean Smithers of Hurricane; brother, James E. Smithers of Scott Depot; granddaughter, Ashton M. Molek of Bentleyville; nephew, Seth Michael Smithers of Scott Depot.
Service was held Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Jack Atkins officiating. Inurnment was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with military rites by the U.S. Marine Corps.
Ethan Pate Thompson
Ethan Pate Thompson, 3-month old son of Robert and Cassie Thompson of Hurricane, died May 26, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Also surviving: paternal grandparents, Robert and Patricia Thompson of Hurricane; maternal grandparents, Gayla and Bobby Sovine of Hurricane, T.J. and Saundra Bishop of Liberty; great-grandparents, Jack and Ruth Bishop of Hurricane; great-great-grandmother, Geraldine Bishop of Charleston.

Kenneth W. Goff
Kenneth W. Goff, 68, of Scott Depot died May 28, 2003, from injuries received in an auto accident.
He was retired from the Ironworkers Local 301, Charleston with over 25 years of service. He was a Protestant, a U.S. Air Force veteran, and a member of Dunbar Masonic Lodge No. 159, and Scottish Rite Bodies, Charleston.

Andre G. Haikal Jr.
Andre G. Haikal Jr., 21, of Poca died May 28, 2003.
He was a member of St. George Orthodox Church in Charleston. He was a graduate of Poca High School and attended Marshall University and West Virginia State College.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, George Haikal.

Clarence C. Rucker
Clarence C. “Jay” Rucker, 74, of Nitro, formerly of Poca, died Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was a retired upholsterer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Lillian Walls Rucker.
