Dianna Sue VanMeter, 56, of Culloden died May 28, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital after a long illness.
She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Emo Wood.
Surviving: her husband of 39 years, Duane Wesley VanMeter; children, Lisa Shimm of Roanoke, Virginia, Trisha VanMeter of Costa Mesa, California and Darryl VanMeter of Hampton, Georgia; mother, Genevieve Holley Wood of Hartford; sister, Melodie Wood of Hartford; brothers, Stephen Wood of Lancaster, Ohio, John Wood of Columbus, Ohio, and Chuck Wood of Palmdale, California; grandchildren, Ashley, Sara and Tyler Shimm, Wesley, William, Joseph, John and Bethany VanMeter.
Service was held Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Wanda J. McCaulley
Wanda J. Stover McCaulley, 74, of Hurricane, formerly of Buffalo, died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at home following a short illness.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, attended Teays Valley Presbyterian Church and the First Baptist Church of Bradenton, Florida. She was Past Worthy Matron of Buffalo Chapter 150 Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles McCaulley Jr.
Surviving: children, Karen Dolin of Hurricane, Gregory McCaulley of Portsmouth, Virginia, Beverly Selepack of Jackson, Tennessee and Charles K. McCaulley of Scott Depot; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, two sisters.
Service was held Monday, June 2, 2003, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Dr. Jerry Harrah officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.
John Franklin Sowards
John Franklin Sowards, 65, of Hurricane died May 30, 2003, at home after a long illness.
He was a truck driver for Cummings Collection Service, Hurricane, with 25 years of service. He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County.
Surviving: sisters, Mildred Sowards of Hurricane, Clara Sovine of Milton, Pauline Meade of Roxboro, North Carolina, and Ruth Borovy of French Creek; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Monday, June 2, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Junior Smith officiating. Burial was in Sheets Cemetery, Crown City, Ohio.
Patricia Huffman
Patricia “Pat” Dea Huffman, 68, of Hurricane died Thursday, May 29, 2003, at home following a long illness with complications from diabetes.
She was born in Lawton, Oklahoma to John Henry and Iva Mae Duck Jones. She was raised and attended schools in Lawton. On February 24, 1969 she married Hubert Lovell Huffman who preceded her in death in 1999. She and Hubert enjoyed their family, travel, fishing, mini-sprint car races, playing cards, gambling and Oklahoma Sooner football. She was baptized in 1990 at the Eight and Lee Church of Christ in Lawton. She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW #1193, Lawton, Chapter #39 Eastern Star, Duncan, Oklahoma, and a recipient of the Grand Cross of Colors for distinguished services from the Order of the Rainbow for Girls.
Surviving: children and their spouses, the Rev, Reina/Ramona Lucero and the Rev. Alan Hinton of Suisun City, California, Buddy and LouAnn Lucero of Lawton, Pam and Billy Johnson of Cross Lanes, Vernon and Debbie Lucero of Dallas, Georgia, and Sharra “Sherry” Huffman of Hurricane; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Bartina People of Catoosa, Oklahoma; brother-in-law, Raymond Harold Huffman ans wife, Kaye, of St. Albans; sister-in-law, Pat Parks and husband, George of Red House; mother-in-law, Thelma Davis-Huffman of Kanawha City; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Service was held Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service Chapel, Lawton. Interment
was in Chapel of Peace, Sunset Memorial Gardens, Lawton. Local arrangements were made by Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley.

Rev. Charles Eugene “Gene” Curtiss, 76, Norma Lee Jividen Curtiss, 72, and Mary Lynn Curtiss, 51, of Buffalo died May 30, 2003 from injuries sustained in a car accident in Charleston.
Rev. Curtiss was a retired welder for the Monsanto Company, Nitro, with 33 years of service. He attended the Buffalo Church of God and was a Church of God Pastor, having served churches in the communities of Hurricane, West Albans, Clendenin and Charleston. He was a member of the WV Church of God Ministerial Association. He was a veteran of WWII with the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale F. Curtiss.
Norma Lee was a homemaker, a member of the Women of the Church of God, and attended the Buffalo Church of God. She was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Mary Lynn was disabled and lived at home with her parents.
Surviving: son, Arlen Curtiss and his wife Patti of Ripley; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Additional survivors for Rev. Curtiss are brother, Carroll of Sarasota, Florida and Rev. Wayne Burch of Buffalo.

Joint funeral services were Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Buffalo Church of God with the Rev. John Conley officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Opal B. Cardwell
Opal B. Cardwell, 83, of Milton, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by the Rev. James LeMaster. Burial in Culloden Cemetery. She was born March 11, 1920, in Putnam County, a daughter of the late Harry and Betty Hodges Rogers. She is survived by her husband, Robert Cardwell; children, Linda Ervin of, Florida, Harry Pate of South Carolina, Mark Pate and Agnes LeMaster, both of St. Albans, Harvey Pate of Huntington, Ralph Cardwell of Chicago, and Sharon Watson of Milton; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Brenda Gail Dolen, 52 of Orangeville, Canada, formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, June 7, 2003. at Wallace Funeral Home an Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Kevin Shull. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. She was born Aug. 27, 1950, in Barboursville, the loving daughter of the Rev. Joe and Kathleen Adkins Dolen of Barboursville; and was the beloved mother of Shelley Insco and her husband John Apreda; loving sister of Ross Dolen and the late Kevin Dolen. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Canadian Osteogenesis Imperfecta Society, 128 Thornhill Circle, Chatham, Ontario, Canada N7L-4M3, and would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Stuart W. Thomas Jr.
Stuart W. Thomas Jr. died on May 26, 2003, at home in Barboursville, WV. He faced a difficult disease with great courage and humor. He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Spindel; his three children, Becky Thomas and son-in-law Bryan Van Norden of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Wayne Thomas and daughter-in-law, Erin Thomas of Lexington, KY., and Megan Thomas at home; and three grandchildren. He was born on September 22, 1939, in South Charleston, WV, the only child of Stuart W. Thomas and Catharine L. Thomas. He graduated from Marshall University in 1963 and from Michigan State University with a Ph.D. in Psychology in 1974. He was a member of the Department of Psychology at Marshall University for 31 years where he taught Statistics. He will be remembered by a host of wonderful students and colleagues. The family wished to thank his friends for their extraordinary help and support. Billy Jack Brammer
Billy Jack Brammer, 69, of Mansfield, Ohio, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Medcentral in Mansfield, Ohio, after a long and hard illness. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Floyd Scaggs. Burial in Butcher Cemetery. He was born May 8, 1934, in Lavalette, a son of the late Ernest and Ann Christian Brammer. He was a retired truck driver, a member of Teamsters Local #40 in Mansfield, Ohio; a member of the Hanna Road Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Butcher Brammer; four daughters, Laura Snow of Salvisa, Ky., Tina Carpenter of Mansfield, Ohio, Jackie Merriman of Harrodsburg, Ky., and Pamela Childers of Grandbury Texas; five sons, George Brammer of Elizabethtown, Ky., Jerry Childers of Miami, Fla., James Brammer of Harrodsburg, Ky., James Childers of Houston, Texas, and Daniel Brammer of Mansfield Ohio; one granddaughter whom they raised, Tara Thayer of Mansfield, Ohio; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Erma Eunice Carter
Erma Eunice Carter, 97, of Barboursville, passed away Friday, May 23, 2003, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Monday, May 26, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial in Enon Cemetery. She was born December 12, 1905, in Lincoln County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Margaret Catherine Porter Moore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Leonard Carter; her son, Harold Carter, and grandson, Rodney Carter. She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Esther Newberry of Cincinnati, Ohio, Hazel Butcher of Milton, and Carolyn and Thomas Mansfield of Barboursville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jarrell and Helen Carter and Leonard and Madeline Carter, all of Barboursville; three sisters and one brother-in-law, of Glenwood, Mildred and Ed Ray of Shoals, and Evelyn Reynolds of Huntington; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Charles E. Ross
Charles E. Ross, 94, of Barboursville, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at his residence in Barboursville, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Andrew Magnusson officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery. He was born July 23, 1908, in Orrick, Mo., the son of the late Walter Lee and Minnie Belle Waters Ross. He was retired from the Huntington District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 40 years of government service, where he was the Chief of Hydraulics and Hydrology Branch Engineering Division. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Starr Ross of Barboursville; one daughter, Patricia Louise Lichok, and husband, Stephen, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one stepson, David F. Lykins, and wife, Mary, of Chester, Va.; granddaughter, Dianna Flaherty, and husband, Greg, and great-grandson, Matthew, all of Hopewell, Va.; granddaughter, Susan Cefalu, and husband, Vince, and their three children; grandsons, Stephen Lichok and wife, Dani, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Michael Lichok and wife, Alicia, and great-granddaughter, Natalie of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Reba Creason of Orrick, Mo.; and nieces, Sherri McKown and Christa Chausee of Fort Myers, Fla. He was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Mo. He was also in R.O.T.C. for four years and commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Reserves in Kansas City, Mo.
He was a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in Missouri and West Virginia and was formerly a member of the Society of American Civil Engineers, West Virginia Water Control Association, United States Committee on Large Dams, National Society of Professional Engineers, West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, Society of American Engineer, Huntington, Engineers Club and American Geophysical Society. He was a family history expert especially regarding families in Ray and Clay Counties, Mo. He was a member of the Charles Kent and Linda Runyan of Pittsburg, Kan., and Gregory L. Runyan of Washington, D.C.; along with eight grandchildren, Keith and wife Stacy of Pittsburg, Kan., Jaime and husband Jeff Peterson of Manhattan, Kan., Scott of Manhattan, Kan., and Drew Ann, Thomas, Ryann, Martha and Kelsey, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Ethan of Pittsburg, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family suggest expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, Huntington.
