Jeffery K. Burt
Jeffery K. Burt, 43, of Red House died July 19, 2003, in Ohio State University Hospital.
He was the owner of Burt’s Landscape. He was active in the Boy Scouts, holding many positions including properties manager of the Buckskin Boy Scout Reservation. He was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, was an Eagle Scout and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a vigil member of the Order of the Arrow and a member and trustee of St. Albans United Pentecostal Church.
Surviving: wife of 21 years, Mary Beth Metzgar Burt; children, Melanie, Andrew and Angela, all at home; parents, Walter and Virginia Burt of Columbiana, Ohio; sister, Connie Bradshaw of Columbiana; 11 nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Stephen Neese and Pastor Homer Gibson officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Charles Ray Sergent
Charles Ray Sergent, 81, of Hurricane died July 20, 2003, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred, and his second wife, Reba.
He was retired from Inco Alloys, Huntington, with 28 years of service, was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Sycamore Baptist Church.
Surviving: daughters, Linda K. Myers of Bridgeport and Dianna Gibson of Vero Beach, Florida; son, Kevin Sergent of Apex, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother.
Service was held Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Kelson Bays officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park.
Alfred S. Whittington
Alfred S. Whittington, 77, of Eleanor died July 20, 2003, in CAMC General Hospital following a sudden illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife and companion of 50 years, Iva L. Young Whittington, and a son, Thomas David Whittington.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a member of Buffalo Church of the Nazarene. He was a retired driver from Point Express and Consolidated Freightways with over 47 years of service and was a member of Teamsters Local 175 for over 45 years.
Surviving: daughters, Ellen Osborne of Midway and Marilyn Evers of Teays Valley; sons, Larry A. Whittington of Red House, Gary W. Whittington of Henderson, Nevada, Michael L. Whittington of Red House, and Rodger D. Whittington of Artmes, Pennsylvania; sister, Hazel Davis of Buffalo; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Buffalo Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Sidney Warner and Pastor Ned Crouch officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
Alta Lewis
Alta Lewis, 103, of Hurricane died July 24, 2003, at home after a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar M. Lewis and two sons, Hansel and James Lewis.
She has been a longtime member of Grqce Fellowship Church, Hurricane. She was a loving mother and friend to all who knew her.
Surviving: sons, Bill Lewis of Kenova, Clarence Lewis and wife, Patricia, of Hurricane, Donald Lewis and wife, Delpha, of Melton, Leeman Lewis and wife, Mary, of London, Ohio; daughters, Brtty Georgia, Emma Shupe of Milton, Mary Suthpin of Hurricane; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Monday, July 28, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor Robert Jones officiating. Burial was in Harvey Creek Cemetery.
George H. Smith
George H. Smith, 57, of Ona, W.Va., died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at his home. He was an employee of Stationer’s Inc., and an Army veteran. Funeral services were conducted at Wallace Funeral Home of Milton, Sunday, July 27, 2003, with the Rev. James Dailey officiating. Burial in Smith family cemetery on Barker Ridge. He was born November 29, 1945, at Mount Lake Park, Md., the son of Phyllis Smith and the late Harmon Smith. Other survivors include his wife, Margaret Smith; one brother, Phillip Smith of Lesage, one sister and her husband, Marsha and Steve Murray of Huntington; two daughters and their husbands, Annette and Randy Rollyson of Waxhaw, N.C., and Leslie and Jay Wiseman of Pittsboro, N.C.; one son and his wife, Matt and Toshla Smith of Milton, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Zachary Bostic, Jessica Bostic and Matt Rollyson. Ethel B. Underwood
Ethel B. Underwood, 70, of Huntington, widow of Donald Underwood, died Thursday, July 24, 2003 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was born May 14, 1933, in Cabell County a daughter of the late Mott and Opal Faye Blake. She was retired from Huntington Alloys payroll department. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Claude Frazier of Beckley, W.Va.; one brother and sister-in-law, Mott and Pauline Blake of Huntington; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral services were held Monday, July 28, 2003 at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Ed Spence officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington.
Charles Robert Tassen
Charles Robert Tassen, 70, of Huntington, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Services were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at Forest Memorial Park, Milton, by the Rev. Ronnie Scarberry. He was born April 14, 1933, in Cabell County, a son of the late Curtis and Pearl Marie Mannon Tassen. He was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Peyton Tassen; one daughter, Connie Betts and her husband James of Huntington; three sons, Robert Daniel Tassen and his wife Jean of Huntington, Charles Eric Tassen of Huntington and Timothy A. Tassen of Barboursville; one sister, Catherine Tassen of Milton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
Vivian Patton Sansom
Vivian Patton Sansom, of Barboursville, passed away July 20, 2003. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2003, at Henson Mortuary by the Rev James Dailey. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was the daughter of the late Thomas B. Patton and Della Kendrick Patton of Emma, Ky. Also preceding in death were her husband, Clyde Sansom, sister Adelene P. Daniel of Decatur, Ga., and her. beloved grandson Matthew Ryan Sansom. She retired from Owens-Illinois Glass plant with 39 years of service. Mrs. Sansom was member of Moose Lodge #813, VFW Auxiliary #1064, American Legion Auxiliary #177 and Local Unions #256 and #212. She was vice president of the West Virginia Labor Federation for 11-1/2 years, VIP Director of the Southwestern District Labor Council for 18 years and was referral counselor for Community Services in her earlier years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Joan Sansom of Wayne; two grandsons and their wives, Steven Ray and Melanie Sansom of Killeen, Texas and Jeffery Scott and Tara Sansom of Ona; one granddaughter, Heather Nicole Sansom and her boyfriend, Wayne Ulrey of Paris, Ky.; and one great-grandson, Brian Matthew Sansom of Killeen, Texas. Also surviving are one sister, Nancy P. Tackett of Prestonburg, Ky.; brothers Chester Patton of Apex, N.C, Alex B. Patton of Arcadia, Ohio and Palmer Patton of Prestonsburg, Ky. She also left behind many nieces and nephews and two very special friends, Danny Endicott of Lavalette and Bonnie Leffingwell of Chesapeake. Bobby Sylvester Ginn Jr.
Bobby Sylvester Ginn Jr., 43, of Cross Lanes, WV, died July 15, 2003, from a sudden illness at his home. He was a member of the Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, a graduate of Hamlin High School; a member of the Hamlin Bobcat Band and Pep Band; a member of UMWA District #17; an employee of Thunder Hill Coal Co. He was a heavy equipment operator. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bryan Ginn and maternal grandparents, Hugh Guthrie and Thelma Fletcher Guthrie. Surviving are his loving children, son William “B.J.” Ginn and his wife Carrie of Chesapeake, Ohio, son Daniel Ginn and his fiancee Amanda Baumgardner of Chesapeake, Ohio, and daughter Katelyn Ginn of Chesapeake, Ohio; grandson Gabriel Bryan Ginn of Chesapeake, Ohio; his parents, Bobby “Tony” Ginn Sr. and Lelia Guthrie Ginn of Culloden, W.Va.; brother Billy Ginn and his wife Yvonne of Hurricane, W.Va.; and nephew Eric Ginn of Hurricane, W.Va. Lillian Fay Hix
Lillian Fay Hix, 98, of Huntington, W.Va., went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 21, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital. Funeral services were held on Wednesday July 23, 2003 at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Harry Rowe officiating. Burial in Spring Hill Cemetery. She was born March 15, 1905, in Huntington, a daughter of the late Frank and Arma Brammer Paine. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Hix, Sr.; a son Luther Hix, Jr.; a sister Jewell Hunter; and two brothers, Lowell and John Paine. Fay was the oldest member in age and membership at Twentieth Street Baptist Church, where she was the church organist for more than 50 years and served as the choir director for many of those years. She also taught Sunday School and was active with the J.O.Y. Senior Citizens Group. The chimes on the church organ were dedicated to Luther and Fay in 1973 in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary. She was a member of the YWCA and their Conference Club and was also a member of the City Mission Auxiliary. She is survived by a grandson, Dan Hix and his wife, Chris; a great grandson, Ian Hix and a daughter-in-law, Betty Hix all of Alexandria, Va.; two nieces, Judy Henderson of Kenova, W.Va., Donna MacKay of Natick, Mass.; a nephew, Tom Paine of Huntington; special cousin and best friends, Polly and Bob Cartmill; and her special friends and caregivers, Glenna Keisler, Shirley Musgrave, Brenda Carmen and Jackie Hutchinson. Lillian Irene Harbour Mills, 75, of Milton, W.Va., formerly of Kenova, W.Va., widow of John C. Mills, died Monday, July 21, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home by Pastor Lloyd D. Sansom. Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery, Kenova. She was born April 15, 1928, in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Oliver and Viola Chancy Harbour. She was a former operator with Sylvania Mfg., a homemaker and member of Gloryway Baptist Church. Survivors include three children, Brenda Shull, Linda Johnson and Bud Call, all of Milton; three sisters, Reba Thompson and Pauline Beaver, both of Huntington and Charlotte Woods of Hurricane; two brothers, Berkley Harbour of Milton and Clifford Harbour of Bristol, R.I.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Ima Ward Martin
Ima Ward Martin, 85, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 20, 2003, at her residence. Funeral service were conducted Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at God’s House of Prayer with the Rev. Ray Sovine and the Rev. Wendell Shull officiating. Burial in Staten Chapel Cemetery. She was born April 22, 1918, in Mason County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Shelby and Martha Meadows Chapman. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, John S. Ward; second husband, Garner Martin; daughter, Vivian Clark; son John W. Ward; seven sisters and one brother. She is survived by a daughter, Jane Ann Martin of Ashton; two sons, Buddy Ward and Denzel Ward, both of Milton; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Ida R. Baugh
Ida R. Baugh, 94, of Lorida, Fla, formerly of Huntington, widow of Wetzel Baugh, died Monday, July 21, 2003 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Eloise Harless of Lorida, Fla. and Doris Pauley of Sebring, Fla. There was no funeral or visitation. Henson Mortuary, Barboursville, was in charge of local arrangements.
Evelyn Hope Whitt
Evelyn Hope Whitt of Hurricane died July 14, 2003, at her residence.
She was born August 12, 1939 in Hurricane, a daughter of the late Joseph and Esta Fern Evans Whitt. She was a lifelong resident of the Kanawha Valley and was a retired secretary with the Dairyman’s Association, Charleston, for more than 30 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nannie Holley and Sinda Henson, and her brothers, John, Reuben, Bill and Richard Whitt.
Surviving: sisters, Mary Hamon of Colorado, Martha Waters of McEwen, Tennessee, Nona Mobley of Marion, Ohio, and Alberta Call of Winfield; brothers, Jack Whitt of Scott Depot and Luther Whitt of Hurricane; a host of nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Robert W. Kelly officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
Gale C. Hescht
Gale C. Hescht, 93, of Eleanor died July 13, 2003 in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hescht, formerly of Pleasant County, was a 62-year resident of Eleanor, attended Grace Fellowship Church in Hurricane, and was retired from FMC in Nitro.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Blanche Hescht, his parents, Joseph and Maggie Hescht, sisters, Edith Stout and Alma McCurdy, and brothers, Bernard, Glen, Earl, Leonard and Bud.
Surviving: children and their spouses, Paul and Bernice Hescht of Fremont, Ohio, Phyllis and Jim Gibson of Johnson City, Tennessee, Peryl and Ted Thompson of Palm Bay, Florida, and Norma “Jean” and Roy McClain of Cross Lanes; sister, Garnet Lockhart of Belmont; brothers, Russell and Harold Hescht, both of Waverly; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Sue Ranson Lett, 70, of Poca died July 16, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital.

Joseph Toy Eads, 84, of Hurricane died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.
He was a lifelong resident of Putnam County and a retired dairy farmer.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Bonnie M. Akers.

Arnold Ray Brown
Arnold Ray Brown, 67, of Liberty died July 17, 2003, in SunBridge of Putnam Nursing Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Liberty, retired foreman and construction worker.

James R. Barnhill
James R. “Barny” Barnhill, 55, of Poca died July 18, 2003, at home.
He was a former employee of Columbia Natural Resources with 28 years of service, and an independent contractor doing Land and Lease work for the Oil and Gas industry. He was a member of A.A.P.L. and was an Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Julia G. Barnhill, and brother, William E. Barnhill.
