Donald N. Brake
Donald N. “Chub” Brake, 74, a former resident of Elkins and more recently a resident of SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Hurricane, died August 10, 2003.
He was born September 22, 1928 at Harrisville, a son of the late Hugh and Ada Douglas Brake. On December 30, 1956 he married the former Virginia D. Ward, who preceded him in death.
He was a graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School and served in the United States Navy. He was a sales representative for Nabisco for over 25 years prior to his retirement. He was a Methodist by faith and a member of Elkins Lodge 108 AF&AM.
Surviving: daughter and her husband, Paula and Wayne Conover of Hurricane; grandson, Kevin Conover; two brothers and two sisters.
Service was held Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Tomblyn Funeral Home, Elkins, with the Rev. Jonas Johnston Jr. officiating. Burial was in Mountain State Memorial Gardens with Masonic graveside rites conducted by Elkins Lodge 108 AF&AM.
Paul T. Holdren
Paul T. Holdren, 69, of Hurricane died August 10, 2003, while vacationing with family in North Carolina.
He was born April 17, 1934 in Charleston. He graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in business administration and after serving for two years in the United States Army, he engaged in graduate work at WVU. As the founder and president of Triple H Properties, he spent 34 years serving the community in Charlottesville, Virginia as restaurateur, real estate developer and philanthropist.
He was a member of St. John United Methodist Church, a former member of The First Baptist Church in Charlottesville. He was the founder and first president of The Charlottesville Chapter of the National Restaurant Association, and a member and officer of the Charlottesville, Albemarle Chamber of Commerce. He also supported innumerable local and national charitable organizations through donations and sponsorships.
Surviving: wife of 42 years, Jean Holdren; son, Paul Thomas Holdren II; mother, Dorothea Holdren of Fort Pierce, Florida; brothers, Kip Holdren of Charleston, Dr. Donald Holdren of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Dr. Ray Holdren of Lexington, Kentucky; sister, Margaret Quinto of Port Lucie, Florida; many members of his extended family, friends and business associates.
Private services were held Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at St. John United Methodist Church, Scott Depot. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Conrad Thomas Jones
Conrad Thomas Jones, 83, of Poca died August 13, 2003, at home after a long illness.
He was a 1938 graduate of Charleston High School. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he served with the Seabees and three years in New Guinea. He was retired from E.I DuPont Plant, Belle, with 38 years of service in Instrument Mechanic Division.
He was a member of the Kanawha County Genealogical Society and the Upper Vandalia Historical Society. He was a Protestant and had lived most of his life in the Charleston area.
Surviving: wife, Martha Robinson Jones; sons, Conrad “Tom” Jones, Jr. of Poca; daughters, Karen and husband, Ed Snyder of Goldenrod, Florida, Nancy and husband, Golden Lucas of Portland, Tennessee; grandchildren, Jennifer and Timothy Lucas, Nicole and Victoria Jones, and Terrie Henderson; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Woodrow D. Jones of Seaford, Delaware, James Jones of Teays Valley and Charles Jones of Seiner, Florida; sister, Rosalie Bailey of Norfolk, Virginia.
Service was held Saturday, August 16, 2003, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Nitro, with the Rev. William Layne officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Robert A. Noffsinger Sr.
Robert A. Noffsinger, Sr., 77, of DeBary, Florida died August 14, 2003, in Port Orange, Florida.
He was born in Red House and moved to central Florida in 1987 from Cross Lanes, where he was a retired national terminal manager for Union Carbide Corp. in Charleston with 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He enjoyed gardening and traveling.
Surviving: wife of 58 years, Joan; children, Sandy Brown and Rob Noffsinger; one niece and one nephew.
Deltona Memorial Funeral Home, Orange City, Florida, was in charge of arrangements.
Mark David Sigman
Mark David Sigman, 40, of Cross Lanes died August 15, 2003, at Hubbard Hospice House after a brave, year-long battle with a malignant brain tumor.
He was born July 1, 1963 in South Charleston, a son of the late Floyd and Alma Sigman of Raymond City. He was a journeyman carpenter and a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local 1207 since 1998. He began his carpentry career with Cross Lanes Acoustics and was last employed by Agstein Construction. He was a 1981 graduate of Poca High School.
Surviving: wife, Barbara Kay Sigman; stepdaughter, Kaila Michelle Sigman; son, Joshua Andrew Sigman; brothers and sisters, Floyd Sigman of Cross Lanes, John Sigman of Spring Hill, Larry Sigman of Elkview, Jo Tarbor of Raymond City, Carol Shafer of Red House, Phyllis Phalen of Hurricane, Barbara Workman of Red House, and Debbie Spalding of Charleston; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Elizabeth O'Quinn, David and Joyce Dorsey; nephews, Matthew and Alex O'Quinn of Winfield, Lee and Christopher Dorsey of Charleston; niece Jillian Dorsey of Charleston;

Kathleen J. Chapman
Kathleen J. Chapman, 65, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 18, at Heck Home, with Mr. Phillip Thompson officiating. She was born Dec. 31, 1937, in Milton, W.Va., a daughter of the late Herschel “Puck” and Rosa M. Clagg Black. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Alvon Chapman. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lloyd Alford Chapman of Milton and Ronnie Allen and Kris Chapman of Ona; one daughter, Karen Lynn Baker of Huntington; four grandchildren, Joshua Baker of Atlanta, Ga., Laura Chapman of Milton, Lloyd Andrew Chapman of Barboursville and J.D. Chapman of Ona; and one brother.
Eloise Spurlock
Eloise Spurlock, 74, of Lesage, wife of Clyde J. Spurlock went to be with the Lord, Friday, August 15, 2003, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 17, 2003, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Max Spurlock officiating. Burial in Union Ridge Cemetery. She was born June 23, 1929, in Cabell County, W.Va., a daughter of the late George Sr. and Alfie Stowasser Spurlock. Also preceding her in death were three sisters, Eleanor Merritt, Imogene Faye Bailey and Bessie Irene Bailey; and one brother, Henry Spurlock. Eloise was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Sunrise United Methodist Church of Glenwood, W.Va. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Linda and Harold Harshbarger of Milton, W.Va., Anita and Kenneth Saunders of Ashton, W.Va.; one son and his spouse, Eric D. and Barbara Spurlock of Glenwood, W.Va.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Maxine and Dallas Greathouse of Lesage, W.Va., Ethel and Max Hesson of Glenwood, W.Va.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, George Spurlock Jr. and Alice of Glenwood, W.Va., and Roger Spurlock of Lesage, W.Va.; one brother-in-law, Harry Spurlock of Lesage; grandchildren, Chad Harshbarger and his wife Stephanie of Milton, Seth Harshbarger of Camp Lejuene, N.C., Danny Saunders and his wife Katie of Lesage, Lauren Spurlock and Michael Spurlock, both of Glenwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Marvin Ronald Bruce
Marvin Ronald Bruce, 85, of Huntington passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at Chateau Grove Senior Living Apartments. He was born on July 8, 1918, a son of the late Clarence E. and Suzy Wellman Bruce. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice Evelyn Bruce and one son, Billy R. Bruce. He is survived by one granddaughter, Kristina K. Bruce of Chicago, Ill.; one grandson and his wife, Ronald William and Angela Bruce of Huntington; two great-grandchildren, Megan Tucker and Erik Bruce. Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Private entombment services will be held at a later date.
Miriam G. Dillon
Miriam Ginger McKay Dillon, 51, of Hurricane died August 10, 2003 at home surrounded by her loving family. She died of ovarian cancer.
Ginger was born June 28, 2003 in Ogden, Utah. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in 1973 with double degrees in early childhood education and elementary education. She received her masters in reading from the University of Hawaii-Manoa Campus and was certified in all the exceptionalities of special education. She taught college classes and in the public school system for 30 years, She served as a job coach at Hurricane High School and was a homebound instructor for Putnam County Schools. She was affiliated with American Federation of Teachers and was a certified educational research and dissemination instructor for her union.
While an employee of Putnam County Schools, she collected more than $15,000 in valuable art and hung it in the three schools where she worked. She also served as chairwoman of Freedom Festivals in every school where she worked, promoting her appreciation of freedom and America in our student population.
Surviving: husband, Matt Dillon of Hurricane; parents, Betty Jensen McKay of Salt Lake City, Utah and Kenneth V. McKay and his wife, JoAnne of Mount Pleasant, Utah; sisters Sherry Oliver and her husband, Steve of St. Lake City, Charlotte Gerber and her husband, Andrew of St. George, Utah, Michele McKay and her husband, Tony of Honolulu, Hawaii, Sally Miller and her husband, Bob of Encinitas, California, Holly and her husband, Ralph Gessner of Cincinnati, Ohio; children, Lisa Wood and her husband, Brian of Morgantown, Lora Ford and her husband, Eric of Morgantown, LezLee Haynie of Morgantown, Steven McKay Wright of Proctorville, Ohio, Stephanie Davis and her husband, Flint of Ogden.
A celebration of her life was held Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church, Hurricane. Entombment was in Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum of the Guardian Angel. Allen Funeral home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles L. Hale
Charles Lloyd Hale, 75, of Scott Depot died August 8, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House.
He was the son of the late Thomas S. and Donia Hale, He was also preceded in death by sisters, Louise Tully and Lauina Hale, and brother, Thomas Hale, Jr.
He was a member of Boiler Makers Union Local 667, Charleston, a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a member of VFW Post 9097, Teays Valley, and a 39-year resident of Scott Depot.
Surviving: his wife of 52 years, Lou Verna Hale; daughter, Louise Elaine Hale of Midway; sons, Charles Cameron Hale of Henderson, Tennessee and Thomas Steven Hale of Scott Depot; grandchildren, Charles Cameron Hale Jr., Cameron Chaney Hale, Steven Matthew King, Mary Lou Hale and Roger Lloyd Hale; great-grandchildren, Cora Dynese King and Kiara King.
Service was held Monday, August 11, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Re. Frank R. Chapman officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Billy G. Williams
Billy G. Williams, 73, of Eleanor died August 8, 2003, at home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda L. Williams.
He was a retired welding instructor from the Putnam County Vocational Center with 14 years of service. He was a member of Winfield Church of God Mission and an Army veteran.
Surviving: children and their spouses, Russell L. and Barbara Williams of Bidwell, Ohio, Keith A. Williams of Eleanor, Michelle L. and Carl Williams of Eleanor; sisters, Pauline Wilson of Alum Creek and Avalee Reardon of Florida; brother, Frank Williams of Winfield; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Sylvester A. Hendricks
Sylvester Allen Hendricks, 55, of Scott Depot died August 4, 2003.
He was retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 132, Charleston, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Linda Carol Hughes, 53, of Nitro died August 6, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was an avid bowler at Towne ‘n Country Lanes.

Clyde O. Adkins
Mr. Clyde O. Adkins, 92, of West Hamlin, W.Va., beloved husband of Anna Lee Johnson Adkins, went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at his daughter and son-in-laws home in Milton, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. Steve Nida and the Rev. Robert Hatfield. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Lincoln County, W.Va., and was the son of the late Silas and Edna Staley Adkins. He retired from Appalachian Life Insurance Company and served in the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Chrissy Gibson; three sisters, Adda Midkiff, Verda Hall and Velva Burton; and two brothers, Gentry Adkins and Grady Adkins. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, April and Andy Jackson of Milton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Joyce Adkins of Salt Rock and Bill and Janet Gibson of Huntington; seven grandchildren, Misty Costanzo, Mandy Austin, Jessica Hicks, Tarah and Bridget Adkins and Andrea and Allison Jackson; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Austin, Taylor, Trey and Ian Hicks, and arriving soon Cade Costanzo; two sisters, Ina Curry and Virginia Toney of Barboursville; and a host of friends and relatives. David D. Thompson
David D. Thompson, 59, of Salt Rock, husband of Connie Cremeans Thompson, died Friday, August 8, 2003 in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Also surviving are four daughters, Diana Haddox of Circleville, Ohio; Lisa Boling of Chesapeake, Ohio, Virginia Thompson of Barboursville and Donna McCormick of Salt Rock; five sons, David Thompson Jr., Walter Thompson, Larry McCormick and Gerald Dean, all of Huntington, and Fred McCormick of Salt Rock; one sister, Patricia Thompson of North Carolina; and three brothers, Oscar Thompson of Barboursville, Leland Thompson of Hurricane and Jerry Thompson of Ohio. Charles Allen May
Charles Allen May, 43, of Huntington, went to be with the Lord Thursday, August 7, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, August 10, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. John Perry and Rev. Delmar Adkins. Burial in Scott Adkins Cemetery, East Lynn. He was born July 7, 1960, in Cabell County, a son of Charles and Izetta Adkins May of Lavalette. He was a member of East Campbell Park United Baptist Church and an employee of Transpec Trucking where his handle on the CB Radio was Big Foot. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Randolph and Edith May; his maternal grandmother, Tolbert Adkins; and his mother-in-law, Patricia Ann Perry. He is survived by his wife, Tammy Perry May; one daughter, Brittany May; and one son, Matthew May, both at home; one sister, Shelley May of Cannonsburg, Ky.; one brother, Dale May and his wife Gail of Lavalette; a nephew, Andrew May; maternal grandmother, Mary Mae Adkins; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ernest and Anita Perry; a special cousin, Tony Gilkerson; four special friends, Brad Sullivan, Matt Linville, Billy Adkins, and Montie Hicks; and a host of nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to an education trust fund for Brittany and Matthew.
Lonnie C. Morris
Lonnie C. Morris, 76, of Milton, passed away Friday, August 8, 2003 in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington. He was born July 29, 1927, a son of the late George and Maud Morris. He is survived by his wife, Nell Marie Morris; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Robert Beckett; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Cindy Morris; two step-sons; Robert and Agnes Estes and Cary Lee and Sally Estes; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
