Opie Painter
Opie Bailey Painter, 87, of Liberty died July 31, 2003, at Hubbard House in Charleston.
She was born April 19, 1916 in Putnam County, daughter of the late Joseph and Blanche Landers Bailey. She was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker, was a member of Community Tabernacle Church of Liberty, and worked at Fletcher Enamel in Dunbar.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ashford Painter, 13 brothers and sisters.
Surviving: sons, Larry D. Painter and wife, Carole of Liberty and David L. Painter and wife, Connie of Liberty; sisters, Swannee Chamberlain of St. Albans, Odree “Babe” Nightingale of Texas and Audrey Baker of Florida; grandchildren, Mike Painter, Lori Elkins and Scott Painter; great-grandchildren, Jason Painter, Hannah Martin, Josh Martin, Jacob Painter, and Caylee Painter.
Service was held Sunday, August 3, 2003, at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Casto and the Rev. Nyle Fisher officiating. Burial was in Moss Chapel Cemetery.

Harold L. Proctor
Harold L. Proctor, 79, of Winfield died July 29, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Hospital from complications of lung cancer.
He was he son of the late William E. Proctor and Della Nelson Proctor Hackney of Campbells Creek. He was a graduate of Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He attended Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa and was a 1951 graduate of Morris Harvey College, Charleston, where he was a member of the 1951 Tangerine Bowl Championship football team. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, Salt Lake City, Utah; the Burgess Coal Co., Clothier WV, Guylick Industries, Des Moines, Iowa, and was retired from Columbia Gas Transmission Corp., Charleston, in 1984 with 33 years of service.
He coached Little League baseball and midget league football teams in Kanawha City and Winfield during the 1950’s and 1960’s and was a co-founder of the midget football leagues in Kanawha and Putnam counties. He was a ranger at Big Bend Gold Course, Tornado for several years. He was a member of Scarlet Oaks Country Club, Silkey’s Golf Team and was a frequent golfer at several area courses. He was known to occasionally enliven the games with a snappy tune from his harmonica.
Surviving: his wife of 56 years, Martha Miller Proctor; daughter, Linda Stokes and her husband, Jack, of Vienna; son, Michael Proctor of Winfield; granddaughter, Samantha Stokes of Winston Salem, North Carolina; grandson, Chad Proctor of Winfield; sister, Geneva Reed of Baltimore, Maryland; brother, Jack H. Chambers and wife, June of Jacksonville, Florida.
Service was held Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Maxwell Perrow officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Herbert C. Gibson
Herbert C. Gibson, 82, of Hurricane died July 29, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital after a short illness.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Hurricane, and was retired from Union Carbide Corporation, South Charleston plant. He was a devoted attendee of BrainWorks, a stroke support group at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Mary Alma Sowards Gibson, Frances Gruber Gibson, and a longtime companion, Joyce Slack.
Surviving: daughter, Becky White of Ironton, Ohio; grandchildren, Patrick Good and Mary Cleary and her husband, Michael, all of Lexington, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Dana Palmer and Samantha Cleary; sister, Verda Leadman and her husband, Donzie of Hurricane; brother, Dennis Gibson and his wife, Alice of Hurricane.
Service was held Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Pastor Mark Kilburn officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Barbara E. Smith
Barbara E. Setliff Smith, 46, of Hurricane died August 1, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Born April 28, 1957 in South Charleston, she was a daughter of the late William and Nayden Adkins Setliff. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Drema Hagley.
Surviving: husband, Richard H. Smith; brother, Donnie R. Setliff of Pliny; sisters Cathy Louise Gillenwater of Hurricane and Betty Mae Chapman of Milton; two aunts and two uncles; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Ray Sovine officiating. Burial was in Culloden Cemetery.
Calvin Orville Jeffers
Calvin Orville Jeffers, 78, of Ashton, W.Va., passed away Saturday, August 2, 2003, in St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton by the Rev. Norman Stickler. Burial in Apple Grove Memorial Gardens. He was born June 1, 1925, in Cabell County, a son of the late Orville and Ethel Smith Jeffers. He was retired from Quality Bedding Company of Huntington. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ella Marie Knapp and Ellen Mayes; and one brother, Shirley Jeffers. He is survived by his wife, LouElla Wintz Jeffers; seven children and their spouses, Wanda Smith of Guyandotte, Calvin E. and Sharon Jeffers of Ashland, Joyce and Danny Arthur of Huntington, Debbie and Glenville Shull of Milton, Sandy and Dale Lucas of Chesapeake, Ohio, Jan and Dan Sigman of Charleston, W.Va., and Doug and Stephanie Jeffers of Prichard, W.Va.; two stepsons, Larry Henry of Barboursville and Kent Henry of Lesage; two sisters, Bonnie Leffingwell of Chesapeake and Wilma Hagley of Ona; one brother, Stanley Eugene Jeffers of Charleston, W.Va.; grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two faithful friends, Richard and Marilyn Simpson of Lesage. Homer Gene Nida
Homer Gene Nida, 63, of Barboursville went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at his residence after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by the Rev. David Cardwell. Burial in Baylous Cemetery. He was born Sept. 25, 1939, in Salt Rock. He was president of Herb’s Auto Sales for more than 30 years and vice president of Regal Oaks. He attended Gloryway Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Druzella Johnson Nida; one brother, Kermit Lee Nida; and one sister, Alice Faye Nida. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cooper Nida; one daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Brian Cole of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren Bethany and Amanda Cole; father, the Rev. Herbert Nida Jr. and his wife Irene; one sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Frankie Jobe of Salt Rock; one brother and sister-in-law, Jennings Ray and Helena Jo Nida of Barboursville; two nieces, Lesa Nida and Shelley Gibson, her husband Mike, and their children Jacob and Ethan; and two nephews, Ryan Jobe and Joseph Nida. Rev. James Frederick “Freddie” Ross
The Rev. James Frederick “Freddie” Ross, 50, of Ona, husband of Carla Anselmi Ross, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, in Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Chapman’s Mortuary, with Brother Tom Reffitt officiating. Entombment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born Sept. 25, 1952, in Huntington, a son of the late Henry and Patricia Frye Ross. He was retired, working with highway construction. Additional survivors include a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Barker of Ona; two sons, Joshua Anthony Ross of Huntington and Brenton McComas of Ona; a grandchild, Emily Dameron Barker; two sisters, Barbara Gail Bunton of Conover, N.C., and Carolyn Diane Scheid of Cleveland, Ohio; two brothers, Henry Franklin Ross and Danny Lee Ross, both of North Ridgeville, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. He touched many lives and will be sadly missed.

Jackie Ray Lambert, 50, of Salt Rock, W.Va., husband of Charlene Wilson Lambert passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. He was a self-employed carpenter. Additional survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Marlena and Bill McNeely and Susan Blankenship, all of Huntington; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Ellen Lambert of McDowell County, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Margaret Renee Ellis and Garrett Austin Blankenship, both of Huntington; special friend, Charles Thompson; sister-in-law, Debbie Wilson; and lots of nieces and nephews. William J. Schoenlein, 72, of Barboursville passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted Thursday, July 31, 2003, at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, by the Rev. Eugene Ramsey. He was born April 21, 1931, in Cabell County, a son of the late Harold W. and Erma Lee Huffman Schoenlein. He was retired from Mountaineer Gas and was a member of Highlawn Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Janice Wright Schoenlein; one daughter and son-in-law, Annetta and Steve Shellhause of Florence, Ky.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William Harold and Allyson Schoenlein of Barboursville, and Joseph Glenn and Marjorie Schoenlein of Escondido, Calif.; one brother, John David Schoenlein; four grandchildren, Janice Ann Schoenlein, Erin Joseph Schoenlein, Leslie Chambers and Ryan Matthew Shellhause; and one great-grandson, Brennan. Carl McMillion, 88, of Culloden, husband of Clemie “Betty” McMillion, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 in Teays Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was a retired FMC electrician and a self-employed small engine repairman. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane; entombment in Cunningham Park, St. Albans.
Janice Davis
Janice Davis, 96, died July 26, 2003, at her home in Milton. She was born in Summers County, West Virginia on July 3, 1907, to David Franklin and Bessie Dunn. She graduated from Huntington High School in 1925, attended Marshall College and later taught in rural, one-room schools in Cabell County. She married Harry E. Davis, a Huntington pharmacist on December 7, 1928. The couple moved to Milton in 1943 when Mr. Davis bought the Milton Drug Store. Janice was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church and was active in the Milton Garden Club, the Milton Women’s Club, and the 20th Century Club. Following the death other husband in 1963, she returned to teaching school until her retirement in 1973. She was preceded in death by four siblings, Charles Thomas Dunn of Charleston, David Franklin Dunn Jr. of Clearwater, Florida, Lois Kean of Clearwater, Florida, and Marjorie Brownfield of Barboursville. She is survived by her two children, Mary Jo Dowell of Canton, Ohio and Harry E “Pete” Davis II MD, FACP, of El Paso, Texas; four grandchildren, Kathryn Griffith of Twinsburg, Ohio, Stephen C. Dowell, DDS, of Carrollton, Ohio, Michael C. Davis of Dallas, Texas, and Bryan M. Davis MD of Nashville, Tennessee; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Heck Funeral Home by the Rev. Keith Leap. Interment
in Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington.
