Alma J. Bailey, 49, of Hometown died August 22, 2003, in CAMC Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her nephew, Dustin Bailey.
She was a six-year employee of Telespectrum Worldwide.
Surviving: children, Eric Mallett and Andrea Mallett, both of Hometown; parents, Bradford and Odell Bailey of Buffalo; granddaughter, Charlee Mallett; sisters, Alice Bailey of Buffalo and Tammy Browning of Winfield; brothers, Stephen Bailey and Bradford Bailey II, both of Hometown.
Service was held Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastors James M. Legg and Mike Miller officiating. Burial was in Haven Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Dick Brendler
Dick Brendler, 55, of Scott Depot died August 24, 2003 in Putnam General Hospital.
He was employed by Clearon Corp., South Charleston, and was a member of Scott Depot Christ Fellowship.
Surviving: wife, Hazel M. Brendler; sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Meredith Brendler of Scott Depot, Christopher and Laura Brendler of Columbus, Ohio, and Scott Brendler of Scott Depot; parents, Henry and Marian Brendler of Alfarata, Pennsylvania; sisters, Barbara Brendler of New Jersey and Susan Myers of Georgia; brothers, Steven Brendler of New York and Ralph Brendler of Illinois; grandchildren, Samantha and Walter Brendler.
Service was held Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Rodney L. Taylor officiating.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Teays Valley Christian School, PO Box 168, Scott Depot WV 25560.

Norvil U. Morton
Norvil U. Morton, 90, of Poca died August 26, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House following a 1 1/2 year battle with cancer.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Dorothy Morrisette and Barbara Kang, and three grandsons.
He attended the Winfield Church of Christ and was retired from FMC, South Charleston, with 37 years of service.
Surviving: wife, Virgie; daughters, Wanda Randolph of Red House and Glenna Tucker of Millwood; sons, Norvil E. “Doc” Morton of Hurricane, Jess Morton of Ravenswood and Bill Morton of Buffalo; stepdaughters, Drema Ward of Poca, Karen Humphrey of Nitro and Sharon Miller of Rockport, Indiana; stepsons, Lynden Lett of Poca and Toney Lett of Nitro; 25 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Service was held Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, with Minister George Erwin officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
The family wishes to thank Kanawha Hospice Care for their wonderful help at home and Hubbard Hospice House for their loving care in the last days.

Howard R. Browne
Howard R. Browne, 90, of Culloden went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ August 27, 2003, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 30, 2003, at Christ Temple Church, Huntington, with Pastor Chuck Lawrence officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. He was born June 29, 1913 in Bell County, Ky., a son of the late Oscar V. and Nora Thompson Brown. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Constance N. Estep. Mr. Browne was the Founder and CEO of National Detective Bureau, Inc. and National Central Alarm Systems, Inc. He was also a member of the Huntington Lions Club, the Huntington Rotary, Good Sams Club, Cabell-Wayne Association for the Blind, World Association of Detectives, Inc., and the Huntington Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife Gladys L. Postlethwait Browne; two daughters, Dolores L. Means of Nitro and her late husband, Everett W. and Connie N. Smith and her husband, Terry of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one son, Howard R. Browne, II and his wife Barbara Jean of Hurricane; 12 grandchildren, Monae Breece of Akron, Ohio, Marc Finney of Burton, Ohio, Matthew Finney of Milton, Howard R. Browne, III of Cross Lanes, Phillip M. Browne of Cross Lanes, John D. Browne of Hurricane, Christina Hodges of Hurricane, Tina R. Weiss of Misawa, Japan, Amy B. Hayton of Baltimore, Md., Terrie Leigh Henderson of Zephyrhills, Fla., Joshua A. Smith of Zephyrhills, Fla. and Cynthia Christman of Akron Ohio; and 17 great grandchildren. Heck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Henry Brinager
Henry Brinager, 88 years, of Milton, W.Va., went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, August 27, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 29, 2003, at the Ferrell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Danny Evans. Burial in May's Cemetery, Beech Fork, W.Va. He was born May 31, 1915, in South Point, Ohio, a son of the late Thomas and Rhoda Dillon Brinager. He was a line operator for 28 years with General Electric in Logan, Ohio, and was a member of the Farmdale Church of Christ, Barboursville, W.Va. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Jean Barbour Brinager; two daughters, Okonda J. Erickson of Tucson, Ariz., and Betty L. Martin of Huntington; Seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a host of other loving family and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Bill Brinager; two sisters, Lula Lowe and Betty Ayotte; one aunt Dorothy Baisden and one uncle, Walter Dillon

Herbert “Herbie” Miller
Herbert “Herbie” Miller: After a long illness, Herbie, 57, of Salt Rock, W.Va., formerly of Hamlin, W.Va., departed this life on August 28, 2003, to walk hand in hand with his Savior, Jesus Christ He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Ruby Miller, one sister, Sally Sutherland; and three brothers, Raymond, Don and Emmett Ray. He is survived by his wife, Dottie, of Salt Rock; son, Chalmer Elkins of Florida; daughter, Brenda Tricome of New York; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Bill Coker of Florida, Reva and Lonnie Cummings of Hamlin and Ruth and Vernon Shelton of Salt Rock; stepdaughters, Barbara and Marsha Hassie; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by one special caregiver, Katie Runyon, and his faithful companion, Daisy. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 30, 2003, at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, W.Va., with Rev. Sonny Sovine officiating. The burial in the Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, W.Va.

Henry Brinager, 88, of Milton, husband of Wilma Jean Brinager, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003, in Cabell Huntington Hospital. He had worked at General Electric, Logan, Ohio. Funeral services were held Friday, August 29, Ferrell Funeral Home, Huntington; burial in Mays Cemetery, Beech Fork.

Sandra K. Taylor
Sandra K. Taylor, 50, of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at St Mary's Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, August 29, 2003, at Baylous Cemetery, Salt Rock. She was born January 20,1953, in Huntington, a daughter of Ruth Elkins Sawyers of Worthington Ky., and the late Kermit Sawyers. She was a GED Teacher's Aide at the Cabell County Vocational Technical Center. She is survived by her husband, Mark Taylor; one daughter, Angela K Taylor, one son, Andrew Taylor and one grandson Christopher Taylor, all of Barboursville; one sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Bill Mers of Tucson, Ariz.; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Kevin Leroy and Connie Sawyers of Ashland, Ky., Kermit and Barb Sawyers of Catlettsburg, Ky., Richard and Judith Sawyers of Huntington, W Va, Gary and Bonnie Sawyers of Huntington, W Va, and Roger and Anita Sawyers of Worthington, Ky.: and several nieces and nephews. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Watkeys Ast
Elizabeth Watkeys Ast, 99, of Barboursville passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Henson Mortuary by the Rev. Donald K. Vinson. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park. She was born June 29, 1904, in Matting, W.Va., a daughter of the late George J. Watkeys and Minnie Halsch Watkeys. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hamilton Patten Ast; one brother, Charles G. Watkeys Sr.; and one sister, Grace Watkeys Parke. Mrs. Ast was a retired executive secretary of Island Creek Coal Company. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church; a charter member of the Woman's Club of West Virginia; a member of the Beverly Hills Woman's Club and Past President of the Woman's Club of Holden, W.Va.; and served as Past President of the Cabell Huntington Hospital Auxiliary where she served for 25 years. She was also an avid Bridge player. Mrs. Ast is survived by nieces and nephews, Don and Carolyn Baylous of Barboursville, Judith and Roger Fortner of Huntersville, N.C., and Charles and Tammy Watkeys of Huntington; great-nieces and nephews, Chip and Teena Watkeys of Greenville, N.C., Joy and Homer Ransdell of Barboursville; Dr. J.D. and Denise Baylous of Virginia Beach, Va., Shay and Rob Heckard of Cobourg, Ontario, Canada, Mike and Mary Fortner of Hampton Beach, Va., and David and Michele Watkeys of St. Albans, W.Va.

Vada Irene Benedict
Mrs. Vada Irene Benedict, 75 of Lesage, W.Va., died Monday, August 25, 2003, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant, W.Va. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington by her son Pastor Jeff Benedict. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born May 27, 1928, in Lesage, W.Va., a daughter of the late Edgar and Donna Scarberry Pinkerman. She was a member of the Shepherd Fold Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Thurman “Bud” Benedict. Survivors include one daughter, Sue Murphy of Lesage; two sons, David Benedict of Ona and Jeff Benedict of W.Va.; three sisters, Virginia Roach of Lesage, Faye Long of Barboursville and Katie Kinney of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Alva Pinkerman of Lesage and Delano Pinkerman of Cheshire, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Michael Murphy and wife Carrie, and Scott Murphy, all of Kissimmee, Fla., Brad and Aaron Benedict of Ona, Kelly, Kory and Katie Benedict, all of Wheeling.

Julia May Chambers
Julia May Chambers, 79, of Barboursville passed away Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, August 28, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Roger Smith. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. She was born September 3, 1923, in Wayne County, a daughter of the late Charles Walker Osborne and Lucy Copley Osborne. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Donald Albert Chambers. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Nick and Joan Chambers of Lavalette, Kenny and Fran Chambers of Huntington and Randy and Martha “Tootie” Chambers of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Irene Wellman of Jackson, Ohio, and Jeanie Ellis of Barboursville; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

David A. Johnston
David A. Johnston, 60, of Huntington, husband of Karen McDaniel Johnston, died Monday, August 25, 2003 at home. He was a mechanic at the W.Va. Dept. of Highways, Barboursville. Also surviving are his mother, Valerie Washington Johnston of Huntington; sons, David Lee and Stacy Allen Johnston of Huntington; brothers, Bob Johnston of Georgia and Jan and Paul Johnston of Huntington; sisters, Connie Johnston of Huntington and Linda of Oxford, Mich.; grandchildren, Alex and Zachary. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 28, 2003 at Henson Mortuary, Barboursville; Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville.

Donald Edward Perry
Donald Edward Perry, 79, of Milton went home to be with the Lord Monday, August 25, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral service were conducted Wednesday, August 27, 2003. at Heck Funeral Home with the Rev. Chelcie Gibson officiating. Burial in Smith Cemetery, Milton. He was born February 23, 1924, in Huntington W.Va., a son of the late John M. and L. Beatrice Smith Perry. Mr. Perry served in the US Army during World War II and was retired from Connor Steel. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Reynolds Perry; three daughters and one son-in-law, Barbara Bond, Belinda Jenkins and Anita and Bill Blake; and one son and daughter-in-law, Blane and Carolyn Perry, all of Milton; six grandchildren, Darwin Jenkins and his wife Mitzi, Elton Bond and his wife Casey, Jilda Holton and her husband Jamie, Ryan Blake, Danessa Jenkins and Andy Blake; two step-grandchildren, Tawnya Chapman and Brent Taylor and his wife, Amy; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Dorothy Roberts of Milton, Delores and Junior Ryder of Lesage, Della and Bob Cline of Dunbar and Doris Sword of Jackson, Ohio; special friend, Holley Cavender and a host of friends and family. The family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington.
