William E. Nichols
William Earl “Nick” Nichols, 81, lifelong resident of Hurricane died Monday, October 20, 2003, at home after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah.
He was a Union Carbide pipefitter at Institute, from where he retired. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving: daughter, Barbara Chaney of Hurricane; two grandchildren, Gregory Chaney, M.D. of Huntington and Kimberly Chaney of Hurricane; sister, Phyllis Cyrus of St. Albans; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Colby Chaney of Ona; step-great-granddaughter, Nichole Bishop of Huntington.
Service was held Thursday, October 23, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Chaplain Boyd Purcell officiating. Burial was in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Robert M. Racer
Robert Michael “Mike” “Fatboy” Racer, 41, of Hurricane, formerly of St. Albans, died October 20, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He was a former employee of Harley-Davidson of South Charleston, and a member of Riverview Freewill Baptist Church, St. Albans.
Surviving: son, Robert Michael “Robbie” Racer II of Hurricane; father and mother, Bob and Pat Racer of St. Albans; brother, Paul Eddie Racer of St. Albans; longtime partner, Karen Racer of St. Albans; many friends and family.
Service was held Wednesday, October 22, 2003, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Delmar C. Young officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Martha P. Howell
Robert A. Howell
Martha Pauline Howell, 78, of Winfield died October 21, 2003, in SunBridge of Putnam after a long illness. Her husband, Robert A. Howell, died April 15, 2002, at the VA Medical Center, Huntington, also after a long illness.
Robert and Pauline were retired owner/operators of Howell Candy Company, Winfield. Robert was a Navy veteran of World War II, a lifelong resident of Winfield and a member of Winfield Baptist Church. Pauline was born in Red House and also attended Winfield Baptist Church.
Surviving: their daughters, Barbara Howell of Winfield and Janet Hill of Belpre, Ohio; grandsons, Zachary Hill of Parkersburg and Cameron Hill of Belpre; Pauline’s sisters, Charlotte Smith and Emma Gatens, both of Eleanor; her brother, Thomas Fewell of Satellite Beach, Florida.
Private memorial service and burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House. Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, was in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorial donations be made in the Howell name to either the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL Blvd., South Charleston WV 25309 or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1111 Lee Street E., Charleston WV 25301.

William G. White
William Garrett “Bill” White, 64, of Hurricane died October 21, 2003, at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Hestel White of Culloden, and was their only child.
He graduated from Huntington High School, class of 1956, and attended Marshall University. As a resident of Kentucky for 11 years, he worked at Bill King Photo Inc. as a photographer. He also freelanced for various publications in the Benton, Kentucky area. He was active in Boy Scouts and Little League while living in Benton. He later served as executive director of the Marshall County Senior Citizens Club for two years. After returning to West Virginia, he worked as a photographer for several years., and for the past nine years he was employed by USA Truck Inc.
Bill was a member of the Pitch n’ Pull and the Mountaineer Sam’s Camping Clubs.
Surviving: wife, Barbara McGhee Black White; son, William Garrett “Garry” White Jr. and his wife, Kandy of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; daughters, Leslie H. Paradise and Lindsay M. White, both of Nashville; former wife and mother of his children, Linda U. thompson of Nashville; stepdaughter, Lisa Craddock and husband, Sam, and stepson, Robbie Black and his wife, Kristi, all of Hurricane; grandchildren, Tyler and Cody White, Tyler and Travis Burn, Sarah Paradise, Jenna and Ryan Craddock, Alisha and Jimmie Black; and special family members, Dorinda and Regina McIntyre.
A memorial service was held Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Hurricane Valley Community Center. A reception followed the service. As per his wishes, his body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at Marshall University School of Medicine.
Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Betty Jane Workman
Betty Jane Workman, 60, of Scott Depot died October 20, 2003, at home.
Born in Kanawha County, she was a daughter of Pauline Kuhn Goff of South Charleston and the late Denver Earl Goff. She was a former office manager for Drs. Odell and Shaffer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Workman Sr.
Also surviving: daughter, Lynn Workman Cox of Scott Depot; son, Frank Workman Jr. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sisters, Mary Ellen Rowley of South Charleston and Loretta Cline of Winfield; granddaughters, Amanda and Rachel Workman of Milwaukee.
A private service was held at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care Inc., 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Owen Michael Bush
Owen Michael Bush, son of Michael and Sarah Bush of Hurricane, was stillborn on October 21, 2003, at Women and Children’s Hospital.
Surviving besides his parents: sister and brother, Sabrina and Cory Bush, both of Hurricane; maternal grandparents, Debbie and Gary Smith of Big Chimney; paternal grandparents, David and Mona Bush of Scott Depot.
Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Women and Children’s Hospital and a special “thank you” to Dr. Naegele for his assistance and support.

Fred Johnson Green
Fred Johnson Green, 85, of Fraziers Bottom died October 21, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Pt. Pleasant.
He was born February 2, 1918 in Upland, to the late James Beechem and Virginia Sowash Green. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Garnett Green, James Green and H. Sinsell Green, and one sister, Lilah G. Green.
He was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Upland. He had been a farmer his entire life, operating the Green Poultry Farm in Upland for some 40 years and later raising beef cattle at the family farm. He had served on the Mason County Fair Board for many years as a director and one of the coordinators of the Junior Livestock Sale.
He was also a past member of the Mason County Farm Bureau for over 60 years and the American Angus Association. He was a graduate of Hannan High School.
Surviving: wife of 61 years, Bernice Artis Miller Green of Fraziers Bottom; daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Warren Cornell of Dunbar, Betty and Pat Smith of Huntington; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Carolyn Green of Fraziers Bottom, Freddie and Tina Green of Fraziers Bottom, Richard and Alesia Green of Pt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Service was held Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Moses and the Rev. James Lewis officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery. Wilcoxen Funeral Home, Pt. Pleasant, was in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o James Green, 545 Mason Road, Fraziers Bottom WV 25082.

Reah June Stanton
Reah June Stanton, 81, of Buffalo died October 25, 2003, at Hubbard Hospice House following a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her hsuband, Howard J. Stanton, brothers, Jack Burge and James Burge, and son-in-law, Michael Lane.
She was a tax specialist with H&R Block and subsequently managed a garden center for many years. She was an avid gardener and an avid reader. She was a wonderful mother who loved her children.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wallace WV and attended the Midway United Methodist Church. She was a member of The Eastern Star.
Surviving: daughter, Paul Lane of Buffalo; sons, Dr. H. James Stanton of Charleston and Dr. Robert B. Stanton of Huntington; daughters-in-law, Nancy Stanton and Francis Stanton; grandchildren, Nicholas Lane and Stephanie Lane of Buffalo, James Stanton II, Trevor Stanton and Annalisa Stanton of Charleston, Alex Stanton, Judy Stanton and Judy Fredo of Huntington.
Service was held Monday, October 27, 2003, at Midway United Methodist Church. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to The Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston WV 25311.

Lillian H. Bright
Lillian Hazel Bright, 90, of Hurricane died at home on October 22, 2003.
Graveside service was held Friday, October 24, 2003, at Pine Grove Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Anne A. Fulwider
Anne A. Fulwider, 92, of Hurricane died September 28, 2003, at Morris Memorial Nursing Home, Milton, following a long illness.
She was retired from Fulwider’s Inc. Shoes and was a former employee of Guthrie-Morris-Campbell Wholesale Warehouse. She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, where she was a past officer of the United Methodist Women and a recipient of their Valiant Award, Past High Priestess of Benu Ra Court 77, Ladies Oreintal Shrine of North America, Inc. and a member of their Clown Unit, Order of the Eastern Star, Tiskelwah No. 45. She was a graduate of Wesley College, Greenville, Texas, and was also a past hospice care volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Fulwider.
Surviving: daughter, Karen F. Coleman of Hurricane; stepson, William R. Fulwider of Helena, Alababa; sister, Margaret Beyer of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Memorial service was held October 25, 2003 at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Omaha Cemetery, Omaha, Texas. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests memorial donations be made in her honor to Shriner’s Hospital Burn Unit, c/o Beni Kedem Temple, PO Box 2586, Charleston WV 25301.

Ruth M. Poole
Ruth M. Henson Sanders Poole, 78, of Huntington, formerly of Winfield and Tampa, Florida, died Wednesday, October 22, 2003, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, following a short illness.
She was a homemaker, former owner/operator of Sanders Restuarant, Fraziers Bottom, and along with her husband, oversaw several creameries in the Putnam/Mason County areas. She was also a member of the Mount Union United Methodist Church, Pliny, and the Manahattan Avenue United Methodist Church, Tampa.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Melvin V. Sanders and Harvey D. Poole, a brother and a sister.
Surviving: daughter, Reba K. and husband Rocky Frazier of Huntington; brother, Jessie Henson of Lesage; sister, Clara Chandler of Fraziers Bottom; grandchildren, Scott Devore and his wife, Susan of Hampstead, Maryland, Rick Devore and his wife, Lisa of Huntington, Katie Young and her husband, Dana of Huntington; great-grandchildren, Ruth, Patty, and Elsie Devore of Hampstead, Adrienne and Madeline Young of Huntington.
Service was held Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Mount Union United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Nolan officiating. Burial was in Mount Union United Methodist Church Cemetery. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Collins
Virginia “Jenny” Collins of Hurricane died October 12, 2003, in Putnam General Hospital following a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Albert and Lena Pearl Carver Snyder; husband, Ralph Collins, brothers, Albert, Robert and Edward Snyder, and sister, Mattie Young.
She was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane.
Surviving: daughters and sons-in-law, Shelia and James Lively of Hurricane, Deborah Sue and Nicholas Ream of Slidell, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, David Charles and Michelle Collins of Enterprise, Alabama; brother, the Rev. Donald Snyder of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Jason and Eric Simpson, Brandy Sigmon, Joey Lively, Michael and Nicholas Ream Jr. and Kevin Knott; great-granddaughter, Makayla Sigmon.
Service was held Thursday, October 16, 2003, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee White and Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie K. Adams
Marjorie K. Adams, 96, of Pliny died October 14, 2003.
Service was held Saturday, October 18, 2003 at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Pt. Pleasant. Burial was in Suncrest Cemetery, Pt. Pleasant.

Burl C. Engel
Burl C. Engel, 86, of Hurricane died October 17, 2003, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.
He was a resident of Dunbar for 45 years. He was a member of Roxalana Gospel Tabernacle. He had moved to Hurricane to be close to his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Boggess Engle, in 1997.
Surviving: sons, Lowell Engel of California and Robert Engel of Hurricane; daughter, Betty Sams of California; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Service was held Sunday, October 19, 2003, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial was in Emma Chapel Church Cemetery, Liberty.
