Rena Cooper
Rena Garrett Cooper, 70, of Hurricane died October 18, 2003, at home following a short illness.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and affiliated with other churches for over 30 years. She dedicated her life to her family.
Surviving: husband, Tony Ray Cooper; sons, Williams Eustice Cooper and Dennis G. Cooper, both of Hurricane; niece, Edma may Cooper Guthrie of Hurricane; sisters, Emogene Garrett Freeman of Hurricane and Elsie Garrett Turner of Parkersburg; beloved niece, Beck Turner Moses of Hurricane; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service was held Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
George Vernon Hodges
George Vernon Hodges, 75, of North Augusta, South Carolina, formerly of Hurricane, died October 16, 2003, in a vehicle accident on Sharps Mountain in Pocahontas County.
He was a Korean War veteran and retired from Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Opal Nelson Hodges, and his wife, Doris Jean Hodges.
Survivors: daughter, Cathy Pleska and her husband, Daniel, and granddaughtrer, Katie, all of Scott Depot; brothers, Warren Ray Hodges of Hurricane, Roy Lee Hodges of Hurricane, and Thomas Hodges of Clendenin; sisters, Gay McCallister of Hurricane and Fay Thacker of Hurricane.
Service was Monday, October 20, 2003, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Entombment was in Forest Memorial Cemetery, Milton.
Willie Esque
Willie Esque, 73, of Barboursville, went to be with the Lord and his loving wife of 43 years on Thursday, October 16, 2003, at his residence. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Four Mile Church of Christ, Branchland. Burial in Dial-Prichard Cemetery, Kentuck Road, Branchland. He was born June 3, 1930, at Dickson, Wayne County, West Virginia, son of the late Willie L. and Vicie Bills Esque. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Letha P. Esque; three sisters, Juanita Lucas, Janet Esque and Dora Mae Esque; two brothers, John Esque and Irvin F. Esque; a son, Ronald E. Esque and a daughter, Verna L. Esque. Mr. Esque was a veteran of the United States Army and a retired truck driver. He is survived by four sons, James Fletcher and his wife Ilene, Ray Fletcher and his wife Mary, Paul Fletcher and his wife Sheri and Timothy Esque, all of Huntington; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Esque and Roger Keaton, Jeanette and Ricky Stover and Alease and Bobby Blake, all of Huntington, and Margaret and Lewis Meadows of Ohio; three sisters, Bonnie Gue and her husband Larry of Ohio, and Becky Bowen and her husband Glenn and Glenna Sue Turner, all of Huntington, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and Lovella Esque of South Point, Ohio, and David and Vicky Esque, Rick and Jesse Esque and Loyd and Lisa Esque, all of Huntington; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Dixie Lea Nelson Yeaples
Dixie Lea Nelson Yeaples, 62, of Barboursville, widow of Donald W. Yeaples, went home to be with Jesus Christ, her Savior, after a long illness at home. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton with Rev. Jim Franklin officiating. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Dixie was born Aug. 10, 1941, a daughter of the late Frank and Anna Payton Lusher. She was also preceded in death by her stepson, Ronald Yeaples; two brothers, Junior Lusher and Welch Lusher; and one sister, Lovena Wetherholt. Dixie worked in nursing for several years and then spent the rest of her life as a homemaker. She always put her family first after God. Her goal was to put a smile on someone's face and to cheer them up. Dixie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kelvin and Krys Nelson of Barboursville; stepson, David Yeaples and his wife Anita of Hartstown, Pa.; two stepdaughters, Francie Wilcox of N.Y., and Sandy Terriberry of Erie, Pa.; special friend, Nettie Wallace of Huntington; and numerous stepgrandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Faye H. Anderson
Mrs. Faye H. Anderson, 82, passed away Monday, October 29, 2003. A memorial service with reception was conducted Saturday, October 18, 2003, at Bates Memorial Presbyterian Church, East Pea Ridge Road, of which she was a charter member, by co-pastors, Dana and Jean Sutton. Interment
was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born May 27, 1921, in Huntington, W.Va., the daughter of the late John P. and Della Davis Harris. She graduated from Huntington High School and retired from the Cabell County Board of Education as secretary at Barboursville Elementary School and Pea Ridge Elementary School. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John C. Anderson Jr., and daughter Sharon Anderson Brownfield; three brothers, Franklin Harris, Paul F. Harris and Clyde P. Harris. Survivors include her son John C. Anderson III and his wife Connie of Crozier, Va.; son-in-law W.H. “Bill” Brownfield of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; granddaughters, S. Cole and her husband Scott of Raleigh, N.C., Rachael C. Ayscue and her husband Trent of Raleigh N.C., Sarabeth Brownfield of Charlotte, N.C., and Alicia B. Moskal and her husband Tyler, and great- granddaughters, Kelsey Lynn Hayden and Preston Toliver Moskal, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., also Ken Seitz and his wife, Jennifer of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and numerous nieces; two devoted friends, Peggy Saunders and Beth Bondurant. She will be missed by everyone who knew her, but the heavens are rejoicing in her coming home. Lee Austin Ball
Lee Austin Ball, 96, died in his home on old James River Turnpike, Milton on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, after residing with his daughter in Ohio during the last year. It was his final wish to depart his earthly life in the former home of his grandparents, Jeremiah and Virginia Keyser Ball. Born in Milton on November 5, 1906, the only child of Thomas Lafayette Ball and Delia Templeton Ball, he married Helen Elizabeth Hunt of Ashland, Kentucky in 1930. They had five children: Robert Lee Ball (Doris) of Milton; Catherine Joan Ball Davis (Tommie) of Thornville, Ohio; Margaret Sue Ball Flora (James) of Milton; Thomas Lee Austin Ball (Sheila) of Barboursville; and the late Jerry Roger Ball. Well-read, Ball was keenly aware of and strongly opinionated about current and political events right up to the final months of his life. He particularly enjoyed watching professional tennis tournaments on TV. For all who spent any amount of time with him, they knew Harry S. Truman was his most admired U.S. President. Like many of his generation trying to raise a family during the Great Depression, Ball sought work wherever he could find it, often leaving Cabell County to work in Akron, Ohio or in the shipyards of Norfolk Virginia. He was skilled as a machinist. On May 5, 1982 Ball was baptized into the Catholic faith. To his surviving grandchildren Ball was known as “Daddy Lee” and PawPaw.” They are Kathy Joan Davis, Tamara Sue Davis Irwin, Misty Elizabeth Davis, Margaret Ann Davis Hamilton, Jennifer Leigh Ball, Jeffrey Hunt Ball, Christopher Ball Lavender, Patrick Joseph Lavender, Della Suzette Lavender, James Carter Lavender, Andrea Leigh Ball Holman, Amber Kay Ball, Katie Ball and Jason R. Ball. He also had 19 greatgrandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. A cousin, Mary Jane White of Virginia also survives him.
Ball's second wife, Eva, and grandson Howard Lee Davis preceded him in death. Funeral mass was held Friday, October 17, 2003 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Huntington. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks contributions be made to Hospice of Lancaster, Ohio or Hospice of Huntington in honor of Lee A. Ball.
Ted Woodrow Mounts
Ted Woodrow Mounts, 88, of Barboursville went home to be with the Lord, Monday, October 13, 2003, at his residence. He was born March 24, 1915, at Logan, W.Va., the son of the late Allen and Belle Steele Mounts. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, five sisters, two nephews, one niece and one son-in-law. He attended schools in Logan County and high school in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was a charter member of Chapmanville Kiwanis Club, he served during WWII in the South Pacific aboard ship Zaniah (AG-70); Ted received the Philippine Campaign medal, WWII Victory medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal and the American Theatre medal. He was also a member of First Church of Christ at Chapmanville where he served as a deacon. He worked in Logan with International Harvester before moving to Huntington in 1959, where he worked at International Harvester, then later retired from Dutch Miller Chevrolet. Before entering the Navy during WWII, he was a bus driver for Logan Williamson Bus Company for five years. Ted is survived by his wife, Ella Jane (Toney) Mounts of Barboursville; two daughters, Joan (Drexel) Meade of Chapmanville and Judith Mann of Barboursville. He is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and also great nieces and nephews. Services were conducted Thursday, October 16, 2003, at Freeman Funeral Home in Chapmanville with Minister Greg Dalton officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, October 17, 2003, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, W.Va. Family served as pallbearers. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington, P.O. Harry King
Harry King, 89 of Dublin, Ga., formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., passed away October 15, 2003 at White Oaks Personal Care Home, Cochran, Ga. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. Tom Hysell. Burial in Forest Memorial Park Milton, W.Va. He was born August 17, 1914 in Barboursville, a son of the late William Allen and Cora Halley King. He was a member of Living Stone Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ardeth King; five brothers, Bert, Charles, Virgil, Stanley and Lawrence King; and five sisters, Mabel Langdon, Goldie Blankenship, Virginia Wickline, Mattie Perry and Florence Hughes. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Henry L. and Patty King of Dublin, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Hurley (Nell) Hughes of Huntington. Pallbearers were Bill Blankenship, Hollis Blankenship, Morgan Hargas, John Gothard, George King and Bob King. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.
Annella Clark
Annella Clark, 81, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital Charlotte, N.C. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 16, 2003 at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, by the Rev. Darrell Buttram. Burial in Greenbottom Memorial Park. Annella was born June 10, 1922, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Elba and Launa Roach Drown. She was a former social worker at Southwestern Action and a member of the Tenth Avenue Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul E. Clark, one brother, Rufus Drown and one sister Edna Adkins. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sandra Clark of Matthews, N.C.; a brother James Drown of Huntington; three grandchildren, Kristen Rutherford of Circleville, Ohio, Jason Clark of Huntington and Kayleigh Wilson of Charlotte, N.C.; and long time friend Janet Grimes of Huntington.
Deborah Ann Frasher
Deborah Ann Frasher, 50, of Culloden, went to be with the Lord Monday, October 13, 2003, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, October 16, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by the Rev. Fred Anderson. Burial in Woods Cemetery. She was born September 11, 1953, in Cabell County, a daughter of Barbara Maynard Woods of Barboursville and the late Charles Robert Woods. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles “Bobby” Woods and one granddaughter, Camry Anne Suiter. She was an employee of Michael's Arts and Crafts. She is survived by her husband, Harry Frasher; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer Ann and Rick Dotson, and Regina and Troy Suiter, all of Barboursville; one son, Michael Hagley Jr. of Huntington; two stepchildren, Harry Frasher III and his wife Vickie of Ona, and Lora Williams and her husband Marty; one sister, Odelia Darlene Woods of Hurricane; one brother, Mark Woods of Barboursville; seven grandchildren, Josh, Ryan Noah, Ethan, Brittany, Leah, and Kaitlyn; four stepgrandchildren, Pamela, Shalee, Cassandra, and Cheyenne.
James Leo Short
James Lee Short, 80, of Lesage, W.Va., widower of Lois Joan Short, a good loving caring person and beloved father and grandfather, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2003, at his daughter's residence. He was born September 13, 1923, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Rufus and Sadie Bailey Short. He was also preceded in death by a son, Allen Lee Short, and six sisters, Retha Spurlock, Audrey Jarvis, Pauline Albritton, Margie Hughes, Thelma Gill and Edna Filichia. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, had worked for Black Diamond, and worked as a security guard for Mountaineer Mack. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Danny Cobb of Glenwood; a son, Ricky Short of Glenwood; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Short of Barboursville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ower “Tobe” and Alberta Short of Glenwood and William and Freda Short of Milton; six grandchildren, Tina Marie Short of Huntington, Jamey Lee Short and his wife Amy of Glenwood, Candie Rena Clatworthy and her husband Jerry of Huntington, Joseph Short of Lesage, Erin Short of Glenwood, and Scottie Lee Cobb of Glenwood; and three great-grandchildren, Megan Short, Miranda Cobb and Evan Cobb. Graveside services were conducted Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at Greenbottom Memorial Park by the Rev. Doug Spurlock. Chapman's Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Lewis Keith Moore
Lewis Keith Moore, 57, of Poca died October 3, 2003.
He was a sales representative for General Truck Sales, a former employee of Charleston Truck and Trailer Sales, former owner of Moore's Exxon, co-founder and board member of Rock Branch Community Bank, a member of the Poca Lions Club, an Army veteran of Vietnam War, serving in the 101st Airborne Division, and a loving husband, father, papa, son and friend. He was a graduate of Hurricane High School.
Surviving: wife, Rita Bailey Moore; father and stepmother, Charles L. and Juanita Moore of Hurricane; mother, Mary Alline Mamone of St. Albans; son and his wife, Jeffery Keith and Kristy Moore of Hurricane; daughter, Veronica Joyce Moore at home; grandsons, Justin Keith and David Lewis Moore; brother, Paul E. Moore of Charleston; sister and her husband, Lynn and Bill Shultz of Charleston; stepbrother and his wife, Michael and Sue Scipio of Dunbar; stepsister, Elizabeth Casto of Teays Valley; other family and a host of friends.

Thomas E. Thompson
Thomas Edward “Tommy” Thompson, 74, a lifelong resident of Hurricane, died October 6, 2003.
Born February 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Grover Sr. and Maude Pierce Thompson. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Grover “Bud” and Charles, and sisters, Helen Mynes, Margaret Leadbetter and Stella Bird.
He was a retired carpenter from Union Carbide. He is remembered most for his service to other. He was instrumental in the formation of the Little League Baseball program in Hurricane, He coached Little League and Babe Ruth and umpired in Hurricane for over 25 years. He was recipient of the Jefferson Award in recognition of his many years of service to the youth of his community. In recent years, he began a mission of distributing food to the poor. This mission has grown with the help of many devoted helpers, a generous supplier and several organizations that help.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane, where he served many years as a trustee and deacon. He was an inspiration to all that knew him.
Surviving: his wife of 56 years, Dosha Bias Thompson; children, Stephen and Debby Thompson, Richie Thompson, Joe and Debbie Thompson; grandchildren, Adam and Nikki, Scott and Megan, Jessica and her husband, Harold Hinzman, and Joey; brothers, Bryan of Hurricane and Don of North Carolina; sisters, Pat Lewis of Hurricane, Virginia Bird and Jean Reedy of St. Albans, and Janet Williams of Florida; many nieces and nephews.
Service was held Thursday, October 9, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Hurricane with Dr. Charles E. Hendricks, Dr. Mike Derry and the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery near Culloden. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

William Lee Elis
William Lee “Billy” Ellis II, 39, of Bancroft died Friday, October 10, 2003.
Surviving: wife, Kaye Duffield Ellis; daughter, Alisha Duffield; stepson, Eric Beaver; father and stepmother, Bill and Sandra Ellis; mother, Joan Pauley; sisters, Becky and Jean; brother, DeWayne Ellis; maternal grandmother, Audrey Pauley; many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Ruby G. McClanahan
Ruby Gertrude McClanahan, 83, of Poca died Friday, October 10, 2003, at Caring Heart and Home, St. Albans.
She was a homemaker and attended Dunbar Mountain Mission.
She was preceded in deaty by her brothers, jake Lanham and Bill Lanham, and sisters, Demma Sigman and Erma Withrow.

Patricia A. Frye
Patricia A. Grishaber Frye, 49, of Red House died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington.
She was the owner and operator of Patty's Country Crafts and Candles, and formerly employed by FMC. She was a Christian and a liflong resident of the Kanawha Valley.
Surviving: husband, Michael W. Frye Sr.; son, Brian McComas of Liberty; daughter, Amy Handley of Eleanor; parents, Charles and Mary Grishaber of Charleston; stepdaughter, Trena Nutter; stepsons, Michael Frye Jr. and Jason Frye; brother, Robert Lee Grishaber of Charleston; 14 grandlchildren.
Service was held Sunday, October 12, 2003, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with the Rev. Joe Scarberry officiating. Burial was in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Bernie Calvin Bird
Bernie Calvin Bird, 79, of Hurricane died October 9, 2003, at SunBridge of Putnam following a long illness.
Born March 13, 1924 in Hurricane, he was the son of the late Silas and Geneva Plumnley Bird. He was a former employee of Union Carbide, South Charleston, with 11 years of service, and was retired from the city of South Charleston. He was a lifeong resident of the Kanawha Valley area and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving: wife, Dollie Zerkle Bird; daughters, Doris Ashby and her husband, Averal of Kenna, Pauline Harmon and her husband, Harold of Nitro, Loretta Taylor of Scott Depot, and Susie Goode and her husband, Mike of Caldwell; sisters, Sylvia Thornton of Huntington and Dorothy Edwards of Hurricane; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
Service was held Saturday, October 11, 2003, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. Harold Harmon officiating. Burial was in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane.
Wesley L. Call
Wesley L. “Lee” Call, 57, of Nitro died October 5, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital.
Born December 17, 1945 in Winfield, he was a son of the late Herman E. and Helen Larck Call. He was a former employee of Suttles Trucking and Leasing, Nitro, and was a lifelong resident of Putnam County. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during Vietnam, and was a member of VFW Post 9097, Teays Valley.
Surviving: Mary Call; daughter, Jennifer Grueser of Nitro; son, Teddy Lee Clinton Call of Columbia, South Carolina; brother, Earl Wymer of Nitro; granddaughters, Brittany, Amber, Katherine, Bailee and Harleigh.

Mary Lou Kelley
Mary Lou Kelley, 73, of Huntington passed away September 28, 2003, in Sunbridge of Putnam in Hurricane. Memorial service was conducted Sunday, October 12, 2003, at Faith United Church Huntington, by the Rev. Tim Conrad. She was born March 23, 1930, in Pineville, W.Va., a daughter of Roy and Lucille Weaver Kelley. She was a Registered Nurse and Pediatric Practitioner at Miners Hospital in Beckley, Cabell Huntington Hospital and the John Marshall Medical Center in Huntington. She graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing and attended West Virginia University. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin Kelley and T.J. “Jack” Kelley. Survivors include a brother S.L Kelley of Boise, Idaho; and three sisters, Sue Lilly of Milton, Nancy Vaughan of Beckley and Harrier Booth of St. Albans. Doris Jean Parker, 70, of Barboursville passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Graveside services were conducted Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, in Baylous Cemetery by the Rev. David Clark. She was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Detroit, Mich., a daughter of the late Fabian and Isabel Stroud Corriveau. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Parker. She is survived by four daughters, Susan Daniels and Debbie Hall, both of Barboursville, Sharon Turley of Wayne and Karen Adkins of Branchland, W.Va.; two sons, David Parker and Daniel Parker, both of Barboursville; one sister, Alice Corriveau of Farmington, Mich.; one brother, Earl Corriveau of Lincoln Park, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
