Retha Irene Atwell
Retha Irene Atwell, 85, of Abingdon, passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2005. A lifelong resident of Washington County, she was the daughter of Lonnie and Dessie Patrick, and was of the Methodist faith. Mrs. Atwell was retired from Piggly Wiggly with 30+ years of service. She had a love for life, and especially enjoyed looking at her flowers and watching the birds from her window. She truly loved her family, friends, and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Delmar E, Atwell; one son, Billy Gene Atwell; and one brother, Alfred Patrick.
Survivors include her two sons, Jimmy Atwell and wife Dorothy, and Don Atwell, all of Abingdon; two sisters, Betty Moore of Kingsport, TN and Peggy Jane Garrett of Abingdon; one sister-in-law, Gay Patrick of Kingsport; five grandchildren, Vicky Musick, Pam Atwell, Geoff Atwell, Donald Atwell, and Christa Morton; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.; and a very close, special friend, Joyce Sullins.
Cryptside services will be conducted on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 2pm at the Colonial Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6-8pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Musick, Geoff Atwell, Don Lee, Donald Atwell, Steve Moretz, and Bobby Wayne Patrick. Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Burke and Bill Bailey.
James Kennith McClanahan
Mr. James Kennith “Jim” McClanahan age 62 passed away Thursday, April 21, 2005. He was preceded in death by his father, Kennith McClanahan.
Survivors include his wife, Deana Powers McClanahan, Abingdon, VA, his sons, Patrick McClanahan, Pittsburg, PA, Christopher McClanahan and wife, Molli, Charlotte, NC, his mother, Edith Fletcher McClanahan, Abingdon, VA, his sister, Lyn Britt and husband, Terry, Huntington Beach, CA, his grandson, Christopher Currie McClanahan, two nieces, Shannon Maynor and husband Jesse, Jacksonville, Florida, Erin Nicole Britt, Huntington Beach, CA, a great niece, Jarah Lyn Maynor.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with Rev. Bill Fletcher officiating.
Interment
will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be cousins and other family members.

William G. Cannon
William G. “Bill” Cannon passed away Friday, April 22, 2005, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Virginia, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Cannon was a retired excavating contractor and a member and Deacon of Greenfield Baptist Church. He was an avid sports fan with special interest in the Virginia Tech Hokies, Atlanta Braves and NASCAR.
Born in Watauga County, NC, on May 13, 1930, to the late Ben and Nina Cannon, he resided in the Meadowview/Glade Spring area the majority of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Junior Cannon and two sisters, Louella Cannon and Lucille Cannon.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Dorothy Neese Cannon; daughter Barbara Lowe and husband Ken, Johnson City, TN; sons Gary Cannon, Blacksburg, VA; Danny Cannon, Glade Spring, VA; and David Cannon and wife Angie, Cary, NC; grandchildren Teresa Steffey Anderson and husband Chris, Kingsport, TN; Kendra Lowe, Johnson City, TN; and Makenzie Cannon, Cary, NC; great granddaughters Kristen and Katelyn Anderson, Kingsport, TN; sister Lucy Ann Yarber and husband Jimmy, Bristol, TN; brothers Chuck Cannon and Tom Cannon, Bristol, TN; and Jack Cannon and wife Evelyn, Green Ridge, MO; several nieces and nephews.

Georgia Sweet Roberts
Mrs. Georgia Sweet Roberts age 96, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2005 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Roberts.
She is survived by four sons, Cecil Roberts, Bristol, VA, Gilbert Roberts, Dexter Roberts, and Thomas Roberts all of Abingdon, VA, a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Russ Roberts, Bristol, VA, a brother, Eugene Sweet, Bristol, TN, a sister, Kathleen Tate, Bristol, TN, three grandsons, one granddaughter, five great grandsons, four great granddaughters, three great great granddaughters.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, April 25, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenwood Freewill Baptist Church. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.

Zachariah R. Wynegar
Mr. Zachariah “Zach” Wynegar, age 90, passed away April 24, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Born on October 28, 1914 in Washington County, Zach was a son of the late John W. Wynegar and Vina Heath Wynegar. He had lived on North Fork River Road since 1947. Zach was a member of North Fork Baptist Church and had retired from the Washington County School System.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Kestner Wynegar; two sons and daughters-in-law, John J. Wynegar and Hattie Wynegar and Jerry Z. Wynegar, Sr. and Linda Wynegar all of Abingdon; foster children, Cleve Ingle of the home and Mary Ann Rasnake of Chilhowie and many more foster children he and his wife had cared for over 32 years. They also provided a home for many nieces and nephews, including Horace. W. Griffin and Dave Crane of Abingdon. Zach is also survived by three grandchildren, Lisa Booth of Tampa, FL, and Shawna Kennedy and Jerry Z. Wynegar, Jr. both of Abingdon; three great grandchildren and a brother, Scott H. Wynegar of Polk City, FL
The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 26, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Donald Thayer officiating. The interment
and committal service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. A procession will leave the funeral home at 1:45 P. M. Wednesday to go to the cemetery.

Dr. Gregory Mont Eades
Dr. Gregory Mont “Greg” Eades age 40, entered the kingdom of heaven Sunday, April 24, 2005, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital after a long, courageous battle with brain cancer. Greg was a lifelong resident of Abingdon, Virginia where he graduated from the Abingdon High School in 1982. In 1987, he graduated from the LIFE Chiropractic College and then practiced chiropractic medicine for eleven years at Eades Chiropractic Clinic in Abingdon. He was a member of Highlands Fellowship and had grown up attending the Pleasant View United Methodist Church where he had recently started attending again. Greg was an avid volunteer at the King Benevolent Fund and the Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry. He was a very devoted Christian who lived his faith and was an inspiration to his family, friends, and community. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Mont and Elizabeth Eades and maternal grandfather, Homer Mays.
He is survived by: His two children, Alex Eades and Abby Eades of Bristol, Va.; His mother and stepfather, Betty and John Mowery of Abingdon, Va.; His father and stepmother, Bob and Betty Eades of Abingdon, Va.; A sister, Sharon McKinney and husband, Sam of Chilhowie, Va.; His maternal grandmother, Cleo Mays of Abingdon, Va.; Step-brothers, Tim Mowery and wife, Rebecca of Bristol, Va., Bill Yontz and fiancé, Ruth of Raleigh, N.C., Bob Yontz and fiancé, Shannon of Ventura Calif.; Step-sisters, Cynthia Yontz of Richmond, Va., Tammy Mowery of Richmond, Va., Melissa Mowery of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Three nephews, Seth and Samuel McKinney and Ethan Mowery, a niece, Carley Yontz and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of Greg’s life will be conducted Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at 2:00 PM in the Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Goddard, Rev. Steve Turner, Pastor Dennis Wheeler and Pastor Frank Branson officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park.

Peggy Anne von Pippin
Peggy Anne von Pippin, 70, of Abingdon, formerly of Berryville, Virginia, Newport News, Virginia and Coral Gables, Florida, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2005. She had lived in the Abingdon area for the past six years, was a devoted Methodist, and was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
Peggy graduated from Clark County High School in Berryville, VA in 1952. She then attended Georgia State College for Women from 1952-1956, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She earned her Master’s Degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA in 1984.
Ms. von Pippin was an educator with the Newport News, Virginia School System for 30 years. She taught there from 1956-1961, then relocated to Coral Gables, Florida, where she taught with the Dade County School System from 1961-1966. She then returned to Newport News to again work with the school system until her retirement in 1991.
In 1972, Peggy was listed as Honorary Teacher of the Year with the Newport News Schools. She was a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa, the VA Eta Chapter in Newport News, where she was a member from 1959-1998. She then transferred to the Alpha Psi Chapter in Bristol where she was currently a member. Peggy was a volunteer and member of the Historical Society of Washington County, and a devoted member and board member of the Washington County Animal Defense League. She was a proud season ticket holder at the Barter Theatre.
Ms von Pippin was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Taylor and Laura Mae Stone von Pippin. Survivors include one sister, Flora Lee Bargeron; one nephew, William W. Bargeron, Jr.; and several cousins.
Cryptside services will be held on Friday, April 29, 2005 at 2pm at the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon with Reverend Bill Rowland officiating. Entombment will immediately follow.
Visitation will be from 1-2pm before the service.

Willard C. Goodpasture
WILLARD C. (BILL) GOODPASTURE, Jr., 65, of Meadowview, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the former owner/operator of Interstate Texaco located at the old Exit 7, a journeyman meat cutter, and was retired from Bristol Compressors. He enjoyed golfing and bowling, was an avid reader, and was a friend of the Hayters Gap Library. Mr. Goodpasture was of the Christian faith, and loved the peace and quiet of his mountaintop home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard C. and Grace Tilson Goodpasture. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Goodpasture; two sons, David Michael Goodpasture and his wife Tina, of Meadowview, and Jeffrey Mark Goodpasture and wife Donna, of Abingdon; one daughter, Michelle Johnson and husband Frank, of Bristol; two stepdaughters, Becky Darnell and husband Chris, of Kingsport, and Amy Brunty and husband Patrick of Abingdon; grandchildren April Leonard and Kristy Johnson; step-grandchildren, Dawn Thompson, Paula Thomas and husband Steven, Tramara Helmick, and husband Whitney, Lori Beth Counts, and Dylan Brunty; brother, Richard E. (Dick) Goodpasture and wife Sharon; nephews, Tom Goodpasture and wife Melanie, and Scott Goodpasture and wife Meggan; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A crypt side service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2005 at 11:30am at the Chapel of Memories located at Knollkreg Memorial Park, Abingdon, VA with Pastor Michael Pope officiating. Eula Muriel Norris
Mrs. Eula Muriel Norris, age 92, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at the Grace Healthcare Center. She was born Eula Muriel Combs, the first child of Robert Lee and Bertie Combs of Watauga, North Carolina born on December 19, 1912. She was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church and remained committed to international mission efforts. She enjoyed quilting and other activities at the Senior Citizens in Damascus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis F. Norris, a granddaughter, Karen Eileen Norris, two sisters and four brothers, Ila Weaver, Velma Johnson, Carlton Combs, Rufus Combs, Robert Combs and Rex Combs. Mrs. Norris was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She is survived by

Diana Mink
DIANA MINK, 58, of Meadowview, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, and a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. She was previously employed by Piggly Wiggly for 11 years and by American Furniture in Chilhowie for 9 years.
Mrs. Mink was preceded in death by her father, Preston Crosswhite, and a daughter, Virginia Elaine Mink.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin (Wimp) Mink; her mother, Ethylene Crosswhite of Meadowview; her daughter, Teresa Thomas and husband, Eddie, of Glade Spring; 3 brothers, Dwight Crosswhite and wife Judy, Carl Crosswhite, and Doyle (Nader) Crosswhite and his fiancé Selena Ramsey, all of Meadowview; 2 sisters, Regina Bumgardner and husband Jessee, and Kathy Cox, all of Meadowview; special cousins, Mildred Anderson and Carolyn Levine, both of New Hampshire; special friend, Geneva Repass of Meadowview; and several nieces and nephews.

Joan Berry Clark
Joan Berry Clark, 74, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2005. She was a member of the Seven Mile Ford Presbyterian Church in Chilhowie, Virginia. She was an elementary school teacher, having received a B.S. degree from East Tennessee State University. She was also a homemaker to a large and very grateful family. In her later years, she was delighted to be a member of the Red Hat Society. Most important of all, she was a Christian and she honored the Lord all of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Joe King Berry and Haseltine Harrison Berry of Abingdon and her brother, the late Dr. John Charles Berry of Lexington, North Carolina.
She is survived by: Her loving husband of over fifty years, Sam K. Clark, Sr. of Glade Spring, Va.; Her sons, Dr. Samuel Keller Clark, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Glade Spring, Va. Joe Berry Clark and wife, Ginger of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Christopher Mark Clark and wife, Beth of Roanoke, Va.; Her daughters, Yvonne Harrison Clark of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Anne Kimberley Clark Hutton and husband, Bill of Glade Spring, Va. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Katherine Leigh Clark of Fort Mill; Emily Jo Clark of Fort Mill; Kelly Ann Hutton of Glade Spring; and her grandson, William Daniel Hutton of Glade Spring. Her family also recognizes with love our special friend, Rebecca Martin of Fort Mill. Margaret Rebecca Smith Watson
Margaret Rebecca Smith Watson died at Grand Court in Bristol, Virginia on April 29, 2005. She had resided there since 1998. Margaret was born on December 22, 1912 in Abingdon, VA, a daughter of the late Howard Franklin Smith and Liza Dutton Smith.
She will be remembered by all of those whose lives she touched when she served as President of the Bristol Business and Professional Women’s Club, three years as President of the Bristol Chapter of AARP, four years as the President of the Triple L Club at Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, TN where she was a member for twenty years. She also taught Sunday School at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church in Bristol for several years.
Mrs. Watson is survived by her two sons, James R. Gose, Jr. of Piney Flats, TN and R. Franklin Gose of Portland, ME; two grandchildren, Rebecca Virginia Haworth of Johnson City, TN and Richard Franklin Gose of Conway, SC. She is salso survived by one brother, Robert Leroy Smith of Bristol, VA.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Monday, May 2, 2005 at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, VA with Rev. Thomas Gentry, her brother-in-law, officiating. Interment
will follow the service.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P. M. Sunday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
In place of flowers the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 7225 Old Clinton Pike, Knoxville, TN 37921.
