Jasper Vernon Holdaway
Jasper Vernon Holdaway was born Nov. 28, 1925 in Glade Spring, Va. He passed away on August 1, 2005 at his home at the age of 79. Jasper was a World War II Veteran of the U. S. Navy as a Seaman Second Class V6 USNR SV. He drove a school bus for Washington County Schools for 21 years and also during that time was self-employed with his wife, Mildred Holdaway as an upholsterer in Meadowview. He was a caring, loving father and husband.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mildred Holdaway, seven daughters and a son, Carolyn Haught, Bristol, VA, Patricia Jarrett, Lexington, NC, Janie Holmes, Bristol, VA and her twin baby sister, Danie Holdaway, who preceded them in death, Joseph Holdaway, Meadowview, VA, Robin Lane, Abingdon, VA, Stella Joslin, Marion, VA, Sandra Tiller, Bristol, VA. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Jasper had a total of 13 brothers and sisters.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus. Military honors to be conducted by Highlands Fellowship Church Veterans Honor Color Guard.
Pallbearers will be John English, Kelly Davis, Henry Schuman, Ricky Lane, Glenn Lane, Clement “Bo” Lane, Sam Seymore, Jr., John Schuman. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Schuman, Thomas Merrihue, John Yeatts, Jerry Holmes, Joseph Holdaway, Sam Campbell, Dr. Jacob Haught, Sam Seymore, Sr. Military honors to be conducted by Highlands Fellowship Church Veterans Honor Color Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Mildred Holdaway, 31096 Ramblewood Dr., Meadowview, VA 24361.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home or at the home of a daughter, Robin Lane.

Rebecca "Becky" Luanne Neal
Rebecca “Becky” Luanne Neal passed away Monday, August 1, 2005, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. A student at East Tennessee State University, she was a resident of Johnson City, TN, and a graduate of Abingdon High School.
Becky is survived by her three year-old son, Kieran Shannon Brown; her parents, Hulon Ray Neal, Jr. and Christine Parker Neal; her grandparents, Wyatt and Cosette Parker and Hulon Ray Neal, Sr.; her sisters, Alanna Neal and Amy Neal Bussey; her brother, Carter Neal; a group of close and dedicated friends; and a large and loving family.
Funeral services for Becky Neal will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Abingdon Baptist Church with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Interment will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
The family will visit with friends from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA. Family wishing to visit privately may come to the funeral home Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to celebrate Becky’s life may send memorial contributions to support Kieran Brown’s educational fund. Please refer all contributions to Highlands Union Bank, Attn.: Bryan Lawson, 340 West Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210. Checks should be made payable to “CollegeAmerica FBO (For Benefit of) Kieran Brown.”

Pauline Hawkins Noonkester
Mrs. Pauline Hawkins Noonkester, age 88, died Monday, August 1, 2005 in the Grace Health Care Center in Abingdon. Born in Washington County, VA on November 27, 1916, Pauline was a daughter of the late Steve J. B. Hawkins and Clara McIntyre Hawkins. Pauline was also preceded in death by a great grandson, Jesse Dalton Sowards; a brother, Irby Hawkins and four sisters, Elva Hawkins, Willie Bell Hawkins, Lela Jett (Elsie) Hawkins Gentry and Martha Lee Hawkins Goodson. Pauline was a housewife and a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church (formerly Bakers Chapel Church) for 70 years after joining with her parents and sister in 1935.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Virgil L. Noonkester; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike Noonkester of Clayton, NC and Ronald (Ron) Noonkester and Della Ketron Noonkester of Charlotte, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Noonkester and Jimmy Nelson of Mooresville, NC; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Amy Noonkester Sowards and Kelly Sowards of Concord, NC; great granddaughter, Shianne Sowards of Concord; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Florence Hawkins Scott, Dorothy Hawkins Scyphers and Eugene Scyphers and Brenda Hawkins all of Abingdon; special sister-in-law, Kathleen Noonkester Cumbow of Bristol, VA and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, August 4, 2005 in the Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Rev. Nelson Woody officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon.
The family will receive friends at Pleasant View United Methodist Church from 9:30 A. M. Thursday until the time of service.
Casket bearers will be nephews and friends. Honorary casket bearers will be family friends John Thomas and William (Bill) Owens as well as nephews that do not serve as active casket bearers
Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Pleasant View United Methodist Church, 18416 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Wanda Pauline Caudill
Wanda Pauline Kestner Caudill, age 69 passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2005 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kermit Kestner and Cecil Kestner, three sisters, Survivors include her husband, Cannie E. Caudill, her children, Sharon Tenney and husband, Basil, Debbie Thompson and Carla Caudill, grandchildren, Nikki Tenney, Brandon Tenney, Chad Thompson, Druid Caudill, her sisters, Leona Sandoe, Viola Williams and Marie Little, special nieces, Peggy Wilson and Beverly Campbell, special friends of the family, Paul James Beeman, Jr., Kelly Worley, John Shell, brothers, Jim Kestner, Abingdon, VA and R. C. Kestner, Meadowview, VA.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Robert Carbary officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Robbie Carbary, Don Carbary, David Eastridge, Bill Eastridge, Shermie Lamie, Mark Caudill and Howard Carbary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 230 Charwood Drive, Abingdon, VA 24210.
The family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Clarence Henry Dye
Clarence Henry Dye age 84 passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2005 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Hazel Dye and his parents, Thomas Edward and Harriett Taylor Dye.
Survivors include three sons, Charles H. Dye, Bristol, VA, Alvin Howard Dye and Bobbie H. Dye and wife Cheryl all of Meadowview, VA, two daughters, Dorothy Denzau and husband Richard, Abingdon, VA and Reatha Horton and husband Brian, Meadowview, VA, four brothers, T. E. Dye, Jr., Glenn Bernie, MD, Vadan Dye and V. T. Dye both of Saltville, VA, Fred M. Dye, Glade Spring, VA, step-sister, Eva Thomas, Abingdon, VA, step-brothers, Claude Vencil, Abingdon, VA and Jim Vencil, Dundalk, MD, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, August 5, 2005 at 12:30 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow in the Blackwell Chapel Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law.
Special thanks to nursing staff of 5th floor at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Dr. Henry, Dr. Swann, Abingdon Ambulance Service, Johnston Memorial Hospital Home Health,the nurses at the dialysis center in Lebanon and Abingdon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Blackwell Chapel Cemetery Fund, the American Cancer Society or to FMC Dialysis Center of Abingdon.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

James O. Crabtree
Mr. James O. Crabtree of Abingdon, died Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Otis and Emma Crabtree. James graduated from the William King High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a member of the Pleasant View United Methodist Church, a retired army reservist and employee of Crabtree Buick. He was preceded in death by one son, Danny Otis Crabtree, and a half brother, Ike Crabtree.
Survivors include His wife, Joyce Counts Crabtree; A daughter, Tracy Crabtree of Abingdon; A son, Travis Crabtree and wife, Cherri of Charlotte, N.C.; Two grandchildren, Kacey and Sydney Two sisters, Marieda Campbell and husband, W. J. of Abingdon, Glenda Lindstrom and husband, Carl of Dublin; A brother, Mitchell Crabtree and wife, Deanna of Abingdon ; A sister-in-law, Doris Crabtree, And lifelong friends with whom he enjoyed many memorable experiences.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 6, 2005 at 2:00 PM in the Pleasant View United Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Alderman, Rev. Jerry Eggers and Pastor Bill Edmonds officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 9 PM Friday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be the nephews and honorary pallbearers will be the nieces.

Carter Charles Tiller
Mr. Carter Charles (C. C.) Tiller, age 92, died Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at his home after an extended illness. C. C. was born on June 29, 1913 in Duty Virginia and was a son of the late Holiday McCue Tiller and Alta Jackson Tiller.
Before his retirement in 1973, C. C. had owned and operated a hardware and furniture business in Pound, VA and Weber City, VA. He later owned and operated a dry goods business in Weber City, VA, St. Paul, VA, Gate City, VA and Mountain City, TN. C. C. had served as the first elected mayor of the town of Weber City, VA and was a 50 year member of the Pound Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Midway Baptist Church in Bristol, VA. He donated the site and gave financial support for the construction of a Developmental Disabilities Ministry home for men (adjacent to his home) that is operated by the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services.
C. C. is survived by his wife of 72 years, Coma Austin Tiller and his son Carter Brian Tiller of the home.
The funeral service for C. C. will be conducted at 7:00 P. M. Friday, August 5, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Dexter Terry officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 6:45 P.M. Friday before the service.
Interment and committal service will be at 10:00 A. M. Saturday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the interment and committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 A. M. Saturday.
Pallbearers will be men of Midway Baptist Church.
In place of flowers the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services, 19477 Rustic Lane, Abingdon, VA 24210. Please make your check payable to “Don L. Bradley Home – Abingdon”.

Margaret "Joan" Turley Castle Koss
Margaret "Joan" Turley Castle Koss, 89, passed away peacefully on August 3 in Hopewell, Virginia. Born in Abingdon, Virginia on November 2, 1915, to James Edward Turley and Bessie Rhudy Turley of Abingdon, Virginia. She is predeceased by her husband, Nick Koss and her son, Charles M. Castle, Jr.; 2 brothers Charles Turley and Kenneth Turley.
She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Beverly Sandra Castle Glover and her husband William P. Glover of Chesterfield, Virginia; and her daughter-in-law Mrs. Anne Castle of Locust Grove, Virginia; 6 grandchildren; Cheryl Glover Estes (William) of Chesterfield, Virginia; Melissa Glover Rogodzinski (Joe) of Mechanicsville,Virginia; Jennifer Glover Dame (Scott) of Chesterfield,
Virginia; Sgt. Maj. Douglas Castle (Christy) of Quantico, Virginia; Ms. Teresa Castle of Locust Grove, Virginia; Wayne F. Rhodes of Williamsburg, Virginia. Also surviving, 3 brothers Carl Turley (Elsie) of Richmond, Virginia; Tom Turley of Richmond, Virginia; Lois Turley of Abingdon,
Virginia; and 1 sister Muriel Bailey of Abingdon, Virginia; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great­ grandchildren and many nieces and nephews all who loved her dearly.
After graduating from Bethel High School in Abingdon, Virginia she lived and worked in Newport News, Virginia, Fort Monroe, Virginia and Dow Chemical of Williamsburg, VA at various times in
her life and returned to Abingdon to retire before relocating to the Richmond area during a time of illness.
The family would like to thank the staff at the following facilities where Joan stayed in the last few years of her life: Westhaven Retirement Living of Abingdon, Lucy Corr Village of Chesterfield, Ruxton at the Meadows of Goochland, Bon Secours Hospice, and her final residence at Hopewell Health Care of Hopewell.
During her retirement years, Joan had a great love and passion for the Abingdon Senior Center where she spent much of her time volunteering and working with crafts and sewing. Her hand sewn award-winning aprons were a popular item at the County Fair and Highlands Festival.
The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to be sent to the Abingdon Senior Center (Building Fund), P. O. Box 1221, Abingdon, VA 24212 in memory of Joan Koss.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 6, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a service at
11:30 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Larry Lusk officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery immediately following the service.

Bobby Eugene Pendergrass
Bobby Eugene Pendergrass, age 61, died Friday, August 5, 2005 in the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
Born on April 5, 1944 in Washington County, Bobby was preceded in death by his father William Marshall Pendergrass and a sister, Linda Sue Miller. Bobby was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam Conflict.
Bobby is survived by his mother, Susie Snead Pendergrass; his sister, Debbie Slagle and husband Darrell of Abingdon; a brother, Doug Pendergrass and wife Diane of Abingdon; a special friend, Johnny Rosenbaum; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 7, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Harry Booher officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park.
Casket bearers will be Steven Slagle, Darrell Slagle, Tommy Pendergrass, David Pendergrass, Mike Lawson, Eddie Lawson, Leonard Tenney and Marvin Lawson.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Saturday at the funeral home or any time at the home of his sister Debbie Slagle, 16072 Spring Valley Road, Abingdon.

John Michael "Mike" Jackson
John Michael "Mike" Jackson, age 55, died Thursday, August 4, 2005, at the
Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born in Smyth County, Virginia to
the late John B. and Rachel Jackson.
He is survived by Two brothers, Paul Alan Jackson, Sr. and wife, Gayle of Marion, Va. Darrell Lee Jackson and wife, Debbie of Chesapeake, Va.; One Uncle, Tom Jackson of Chesapeake, Va. ;One nephew, Danny Jackson of Chesapeake, Va.; One niece, Angela Ramsey of Roanoke, Va.; Several great nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, August 7, 2005, at 4:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 PM Saturday night at the funeral home.
