Samuel Snead
Mr. Samuel Snead, age 86, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2006 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Snead was born January 9, 1920 in Washington County, Virginia to the late James F. and Annie Snead. Mr. Snead was owner operator of Sam Snead Electric and in his later years was a builder and landlord.
Mr. Snead is survived by his wife Gladys Snead, one son, Sam W. Snead and wife Rebecca, one granddaughter, Meghan Snead, one grandson, Sam W. Snead, II, all of Bristol, Virginia, one brother, Irby Snead and wife Elizabeth and one sister, Elsie Grubb and husband, Gilbert all of Abingdon.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Walter Weikel officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Sam W. Snead, II, Ralph Yates, Frank Darlington, James Ferreira, David Bashor and Rick Marshall. Honorary pallbearer will be Robert McCulloch. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, August 2, 2006. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 East Main Street, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.

Dorothy R. Sutter
Dorothy R. “Dot” Sutter, age 77, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Smyth County, Virginia and had lived in Abingdon since 1967.
She is survived by five nieces, one nephew and a sister-in-law, Ella Mae Sutter with whom she made her home.
Services were private.

Jennie Dameron
Jennie Dameron was a well known educator and librarian in Washington County. Mrs. Dameron was a media specialist in the elementary schools and taught the program for the gifted youth in her schools. She was married to the late John H. Dameron, band director at Abingdon High School (and previously at Mt. Sterling, KY; Clinton, TN; Harriman, TN; and Knoxville, TN high schools.)
Jennie Rose Poynter was the youngest of six children. She was born in Menifee County, KY on September 2, 1920. She learned early in life the value of education as her father was a local teacher. She graduated from Frenchburg High School at the age of 16, and later attended Berea College. She married John H. Dameron in 1945.
Mr. and Mrs. Dameron lived in Harriman, TN for 12 years. Mrs. Dameron began her library work at Central Elementary School in Harriman, while Mr. Dameron was band director at Harriman High School.
After moving to Abingdon in 1965, Mrs. Dameron worked for Washington County Schools. She commuted to Johnson City and completed her degree in library science at East Tennessee State University. She later earned a Master’s Degree in gifted education from Appalachian State University, and held a patent for her invention “Unifiles.’.
She is survived by one sister, Willa Mae Hurst of Charlotte, NC; two children, Jeanette (Mrs. Fred) Schuszler of Morganton, NC; John Dameron (married to Tanya) of St. Petersburg, FL, She has four grandchildren: Julia Dameron, Hollywood, CA; Anna Schuszler of Hickory, NC; Taliessin Schuszler of Morganton, NC, and Dima Dameron of Minneapolis, MN. She has one great grandson, Braedon Schuszler. Nieces and nephews include: Joan Smith, Cheryl Hall, Barbara McEvoy, Lois Watts, Robyn Warren, Sarah Moore, Stephen Smith, Lynn Nash, and Lee Martin; and one great, great niece Hayden Keziah.
The memorial service will be conducted Saturday, August 5, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Frederick Schuszler officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the funeral home parlor.
The family has especially invited any of Mrs. Dameron’s past students to attend the service.
She would be pleased to have any donations made to your local school libraries.

James Wilson Lockard
Mr. James Wilson Lockard, age 68, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at his home.
Born on July 4, 1938 in Whitesburg, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Kenus Earl Lockard, Sr. and Cora Stewart Lockard. James was also preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth Lockard and his brother Kenus Earl Lockard, Jr.
James had worked as a chief electrician in the coal mining industry with Island Creek Coal Company/ Consol Energy and had retired after 25 years of service. He was a graduate of the Millersburg Military Institute and was a veteran of the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife Wanda Roulett Lockard; his daughters, Thana Rowe and husband David of Grundy; Elizabeth Stacy and husband Robert of Bristol, VA; his brother, Charles Lockard and wife Susie of Abingdon; his sister, Ersie Mitchell and husband Willard of Belfast, VA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Roger and Sherry Roulett of Allen, TX, Jerry and Judy Roulett of Vansant, VA and J. C. and Betty Roulett of Lake Placid, FL; his grand daughters, Amanda Matney, Sarah Stacy and Anna Stacy.
The funeral service for James Wilson Lockard will be conducted at 11:00 A. M., Saturday, August 5, 2006 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon) with Rev. Bill Edmonds officiating. A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00 P. M., Friday, August 4, 2006 in the Forest Hills Chapel.The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service Friday night. Pallbearers will be Timothy Lockard, Jim Lockard, Chris Lockard, Lance Roulette, Kenneth Roulett, and Joe Mullins. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Senter, Mike Reynolds, Mack Ratliff, Carl Phillips and the members of the Hardees’ R.O.M.E.O. Club.

Dennis Lee Call
Mr. Dennis Lee Call, age 51, died Thursday, August 3, 2006, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Smyth County, Virginia but had lived most of his life in Glade Spring. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion “Sonny” and Elizabeth Call. He is survived by

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, August 6, 2006, at 2:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home but friends may visit at his home, 341 Shenandoah Drive, Glade Spring. Pallbearers will be Tommy Sexton, Chad Sexton, Gary Leslie, Shane Puckett, Joel Tuggle and Louie Ratcliffe.

Ruth Rust Thomas
Ruth Rust Thomas, age 79, died peacefully at home, 228 Kirkwood Street, in Glade Spring on Sunday, August 6, 2006.
Ruth was born on August 2, 1927, the daughter of the late Arthur Rust and Elizabeth Rust. She was preceded in death by her husband, C. R. “Richard” Thomas, her brother A. J. Rust and her sisters, Thelma Boardwine, Lucille Poore and Helen Donathan.
Survivors include her daughters, Jeanette Thomas Hines and husband Mickey of Abingdon and Elizabeth Thomas Ornduff and husband Don of Boone, NC; her sons, C. R. “Dickie” Thomas and wife Wanda of Walker Springs, LA and Mike Thomas and wife Patricia of Glade Spring; twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Tom Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in the Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Linda Karen Billiter
Mrs. Linda Karen Creasy Billiter, age 54, died Friday, August 11, 2006 at her home.
She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Robert Creasy and Eva June Widner Creasy.
She is survived by her husband, John R. Billiter, her sons, Freddie Hall and wife, Melissa, Abingdon, VA, Mike Hall and wife, Maria, Newland, NC, her daughter, Brandie Billiter Arnett and husband, Steve, Meadowview, VA, her sisters, Gladys Wilson and husband Curt, Abingdon, VA, Peggy Icenhour and husband, Rick, Lenoir, NC, Kathy Malone, Lenoir, NC, her brothers, Ernie Creasy, Milton, WVA, Leon Creasy and wife Cathy, Steve Creasy and wife, Sissy all of Lenoir, NC, seven grandchildren, Heather, Shayna, Zac, Katie, Aamon, Mason and Tatum, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Linda will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday, August 13, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Mr. Jim Pence, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bucky Farris, Ben Repass, David Necessary, Jim Johnson, Jim Fogleman, Mike Shaver and the men of Green Spring Fire Department.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 P. M. until 3:00 P. M. Sunday in the funeral home.

Edgar Franklin Fields
Edgar Franklin Fields, 80, went to be with the Lord on August 12, 2006 in his Abingdon home. He was born December 25, 1925 in Russell County, Virginia to John Thomas and Goldie Fields. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was employed by and retired from the Abingdon branch of Southern States after many years of service. He was a member of Greendale Chapel and resided in the Greendale community for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Helen; his parents, brothers Stuart and Thomas, and sisters, Dora and Frances. Survivors include his loving children: son Eddie Wayne and wife Marie, daughter Hope Waddell and husband Mike, all of Abingdon. Two brothers Martin Fields, of Lebanon, Oscar Fields, of Abingdon; and sister Ruby Alexander, of Lebanon. Grandson Jason Fields and wife Susan, of Abingdon; and granddaughters Christy Fields, of Abingdon, Miranda Waddell, of Abingdon and fiancé, Marvin Turnmire. Other survivors include several brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday, August 14, 2006, at 6:30 PM in the Greendale Chapel with Rev. Jerry Eggers and Rev. Paul Young officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Greendale Chapel. A committal service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. Family and friends are to meet at the church on Tuesday by 12:30 for a procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason Fields, Frankie Fogleman, Allen Hay, Scott Hay, Dean Fields, Teddy Rasnake and Ricky Edmiston.. Honorary Pallbearers are Elmer Hay, James Hay, Buddy Campbell, E. W. Leonard and former co-workers of Southern States.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greendale Chapel, P.O.Box 1314 Abingdon, VA 24212 or the Mount Olive Christian Church, Route 1 Box 117, Lebanon, VA 24266.

Glen Allen Umbarger
Glen Allen Umbarger, age 43, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 13, 2006 in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA.
Glen was born on January 31, 1963 in Washington County, Virginia and was a son of Emma Cole Umbarger and the late Leland Edgar Umbarger. He attended Greendale Chapel Church and Friendship Chapel Baptist Church.
Glen was a joyous and happy man who loved everyone and everyone who knew Glen knew love because of this.
Survivors include his mother Emma Cole Umbarger; two brothers, Ray Umbarger and wife Krista and Ronnie Umbarger and wife Connie all of Abingdon; three sisters, Connie Sue Umbarger of Abingdon; Linda Rutledge and husband John of Abingdon and Nancy White and husband Johnny of Meadowview; 6 nephews and nieces, 6 great nephews and nieces.
The funeral service for Glen Allen Umbarger will be conducted at 8:00 P. M. Wednesday, August 16, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Garry Cole and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Committal and burial service will be at 11:00 A. M. Thursday, August 17, 2006 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the burial service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A. M. Thursday. Pallbearers will be Chasity Umbarger, Rick Umbarger, Angie Rutledge, Randy Rutledge, John Rutledge, Cheryl McLeod, Johnny White and Jimmy Honaker. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P. M. – 7:45 P. M. Wednesday before the funeral service or any time at the home, 14234 Porterfield Highway, Abingdon. The family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to Glen’s caregivers at Valley Health Care Center and to Dr. Mark Handy for all the care and compassion shown Glen.

Mary Helen Lewis
Mrs. Mary Helen Blevins Lewis, age 96, passed away Monday, August 14, 2006, in Westhaven Retirement Living.
Mrs. Lewis was a lifelong resident of Damascus and was the oldest member of Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren. She was a graduate of Damascus High School and a graduate of Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Washington County Home Demonstration Club, Washington County Women’s and Professional Business Club, and Damascus Senior Citizens Club.
Mrs. Lewis was born May 6, 1910 in Washington County, Virginia to the late, Granville and Mary Frances Blevins. She was also preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years Rev. Paul Samuel Lewis, two sisters, Lillian Blevins and Georgia B. Gilpen, five brothers, Tom Blevins, Charles Blevins, Earl Blevins, Dean Blevins, and Walter Blevins.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by one nephew, Don Blevins and wife Evelyn of Monterey Valley, California, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth L. Warden of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, Mrs. Florence L. Roland of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Mrs. Allen B. Lewis of Taylor’s Valley, Virginia, two brother-in-laws; Jack Lewis of Taylor’s Valley, Virginia, and Roger Lewis of Kingsport, Tennessee, and also special friends and caregivers; Vernon and Gladys Waters of Damascus, Virginia.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at 3:00 P.M. at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren in Taylor’s Valley, Virginia with Rev. Terry Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson- Lewis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Forrester, Jack Lewis, Carl McMurray, David Warden, Danny Waters, and Wes Waters. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. -2:45 P.M. on Wednesday August 16, 2006 in the church prior to the funeral service. Friends may call at the home of Vernon and Gladys Waters, 528 Clifton Street, Damascus, Virginia at any time.

Sandra Mae Hatfield
Sandra Mae Hatfield, age 66, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Born on September 29, 1939 in New Jersey, Sandy was a daughter of the late Harold Keiling and Alice McGraw Keiling. She and her husband had lived in California before moving to the Abingdon area over twenty years ago.
Sandy was very active member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and was involved in Washington County leadership where she served the Washington County Board of Supervisors and the County Administrator as administrative assistant.
Survivors include her husband Louis “Lee” Hatfield; a brother, Dick Keiling of Lima, New Hampshire; her sisters, Linda Lester and Barbara O’Connor both of Ocean Pines, MD and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Sandra Mae Hatfield will be conducted at 2:00 P. M., Monday, August 21, 2006 in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Weikle officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The following family members will serve as pallbearers: Mark Lester, Charles Lester, Dick Keiling, John O’Connor, John O’Connor, Jr. and David Hatfield. Honorary pallbearer will be a dear family friend, Tony Vallarelli. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Sunday, August 20 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the University of Virginia Brain Research Fund, Division of Neurology Oncology, UVA Medical System, Hospital West, Room 6228, P. O. Box 800432, Charlottesville, VA 22908-0432.

Caleb Stephen Denton
Caleb Stephen Denton, age 3 went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 20, 2006 in the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Caleb attended Abingdon Bible Church, and loved Thomas the Train.
Caleb is survived by his parents who cherished and loved him deeply, Dr. Stephen and Angela Sizemore Denton of Abingdon, one brother, Luke Andrew Denton. Grandparents; Kenneth and Patricia Denton of Abingdon. Lula Sizemore of Grundy, Virginia. Caleb is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family would like to thank Marie Denton, Chuck and Polly Sizemore for their dedication and love to Caleb throughout our battle. In addition the family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital and especially Dr’s. Waldren, Dunsmore, Lynch, and Kron.
The family has requested a private funeral service and visitation.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Memorial Program 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or for Rhabdomyosarcoma research.

Charles Preston Greer
Mr. Charles Preston Greer, age 71, passed away Monday, August 21, 2006 in Russell County Medical Center.
Mr. Greer was born August 10, 1935 in Abingdon, Virginia to the late Hoy W. Greer and Gladys Dolinger Greer. He had retired from the United States Air Force in 1976. Mr. Greer had lived in Damascus, Virginia prior to moving to Lebanon, Virginia. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus, South Carolina and attended Lebanon Community Fellowship in Lebanon, Virginia
Mr. Greer is preceded in death by his father and first wife Sharron Greer.
Mr. Greer is survived by his wife, Susan Greer, his mother; Gladys Greer of Chilhowie, Virginia, three daughters, Charlene K. Grigsby of Lexington, South Carolina, Pam Wooten of Pelion, South Carolina, and Teresa Owens of Cayce, South Carolina. Two brothers, Bob Greer of Little River, South Carolina, Edward Greer of Bedford, Virginia. Three sisters, Janice Johnson of Abingdon, Virginia Williams of Abingdon, and Linda Bobo of Cordova, Tennessee. Seven grandchildren, Lori Grigsby, Jenna Grigsby, Tommy Wooten, Jr., Lyle Wooten, Sherilyn Melton, Terry Owens, and Randy Owens. Two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Melton and Ryan Melton also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 24, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jeff Williams and Rev. Tim Blevins officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Thursday, August 24, 2005 from 5:00 P.M. until time for service.

Frances Ellen Jones McPherson
Mrs. Frances Ellen Jones McPherson, age 95, died Thursday, August 31, 2006.
She was a native of Alabama and had lived in Bristol before moving to Abingdon a number of years ago. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. H. M. Jones of Bristol and was also preceded in death by her husband, Fillmore McPherson, Jr.
Mrs. McPherson was educated at Virginia Intermont College and East Tennessee State University and had taught in the Bristol, Tennessee and Washington County Virginia public schools. She was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church, the Abingdon Booklover’s Club, the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Friends of Barter Theatre.
Survivors include her son Fillmore McPherson III of Madison, CT; three grandchildren, Fillmore McPherson IV of Middletown, NY, Bruce McPherson and Amanda McPherson Kunard both of San Diego, CA; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Willis (Dorothy) Caldwell of Tallahassee, FL and Mrs. Antonio (Virginia) Cansino of Miami Beach, FL.
A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Frances Ellen Jones McPherson will be conducted at 10 A.M. Tuesday, September 5, 2006 in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however you may sign the guest register at any time there.
In place of flowers, the family asks that you honor Mrs. McPherson’s memory by making a memorial donation to the Barter Foundation, Post Office Box 867, Abingdon, VA 24212 or a charity of one’s choice.
