Robert A. "Bob" Butler
Robert “Bob” Butler, 67, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 20007 at his home in Emory.
Mr. Butler was preceded in death by his parents, Eunicetine B. Butler and Shelton Butler of Saltville, VA. Mr. Butler was of the Baptist faith with membership at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Foster Butler of the home, a daughter, Kathy Butler of Anderson, SC, two grandchildren, Sasha Huskey and Bryant Dukes, Jr., of Anderson, SC, two sisters, Sandra Nelson, Macon, GA, and Carolyn Butler and a brother, Mark Butler both of Saltville, VA, an aunt, Gloria B. Wilson of Bristol, VA, one nephew and several cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Noon in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Evangelist Gaynelle Heath, Reverend William Austin and other area ministers officiating.
Interment
will follow in the Foster Family Cemetery at Emory, VA with military honors to be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Color Guard.
Pallbearers will be William Yeargin, Joshua Honaker, Kenny Wilson, Darryl Wilson, William Wilson and Steve Thomas.
Honorarry pallbearers will be Robert Lampkins, Maurice Hill, Clarence Fullen, James Fullen, George Watkins, Joe Bowers, Fred Hill, Sr., Chester Rife and Jerry Thomas.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 5, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Brandi Destine Roxanne Cook
Brandi Destine Roxanne Cook was born August 2, 1978 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Virginia and rededicated her life to the Lord on July 7, 1998. Brandi went to join her and Clyde’s infant son Michael Shawn Justus Cook on Wednesday, January 3, 2007.
Brandi graduated from Castlewood High School and Russell County Vocational School of Cosmetology and Nursing. She was an employee of Sprint in Bristol, TN. She wed Clyde Cook, Jr. of Glade Spring, VA on May 6, 1998.
She leaves to mourn her loving husband Clyde Cook, Jr.; her parents Rev. Robert and Glenda White of Castlewood, VA and her mother-in-law Betty Cook of Glade Spring, VA; Biological father and step-mother James and Patricia Roberts of Bronx, NY; two sisters Nicole Shelley (husband Troy) of Bristol, TN and Alesha Roberts of Castlewood, VA; one brother James K. Roberts (and wife Lima) of Brooklyn, NY; two sisters-in-laws, Angela Donzella Kitchens (husband Doug) of Glade Spring, VA and Denise Fuqua (husband Earl) of Charleston, SC; two brothers-in-laws Ernest Hill (wife Maria) of Gray, TN and Vincent Cook (Heather) of Abingdon, VA.
Brandi will be missed by several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved her dearly and a host of special nieces and nephews; Staci & Talya Shelley (Bristol, TN); Brook & Joshua Fuqua (Charleston, SC); Eric & Ali Kitchens (Bristol, TN); Major & Bishop Cook (Abingdon, VA); Robbie Clark (Abingdon, VA); Cory Clark (Glade Spring, VA); Devan Kitchens (Tampa, FL); Adrien Hill (Gray, TN) and Jamel Williams (Brooklyn, NY).
Brandi was also a dedicated member of Mt. Calvary Community Church, Glade Spring, VA where she served in the choir, praise team and recently acted as Assistant Choir Director. Brandi & Clyde also worked together to establish the youth choir at Mt. Calvary.
Brandi will be remembered for many things, her love for her husband Clyde and her family and friends. She had a special love for children, especially her nieces and nephews and loved to take pictures of the children.
A celebration of life and home going service for Brandi Destine Roxanne Cook will be held Monday, January 8, 2007 at 2:00 PM in the Farris Funeral Chapel, 427 East Main Street with Rev. Melvin Johnson, Rev. Danny Belcher, Rev. Dr. W.A. Johnson, Rev. Marvin Cain and Rev. Woody Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Doug Kitchen, William Allen, James Roberts, Ernest Hill, Vincent Cook, Troy Shelley and Gary Dalton. Honorary pallbearers will be Douglas Hill, Nathaniel Johnson, Danny Fields, Dennis Hill, Spencer Foster, and Mark Trent.
Charles R. Callahan
Mr. Charles R. “Wimp” Callahan, age 73, died Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Valley Health Care. Mr. Callahan was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lena Callahan; brothers, James and Sam Callahan; sisters, June Callahan and Nannie Williams.
Mr. Callahan attended Grace Presbyterian Church and had served in the Army in Germany as an aircraft technician. He was employed at Washington Motor Company for 25 years and had also been a building contractor for 26 years. Additionally, he served as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals for the Town of Glade Spring. He loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and farming, but his first love was his family.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to the staff of the Third Wing at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie for their loving care. They would also like to thank Dr. William Mark Handy.
Mr. Callahan is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Janet Callahan; daughters Susan Kiser and husband Roger of Glade Spring, VA and Vickie McComas and husband Eric of Lebanon, VA; a sister, Sally Ann Jester and husband Bob of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, Samantha Kiser, Maggie and Peyton McComas; a very special sister-in-law, Anne Bates; a very special brother-in-law, Vern Williams; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Charles R. “Wimp” Callahan will be conducted Monday, January 8, 2007 at 11:30 AM in the Farris Funeral Chapel, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon with Dr. Darlene Litton officiating. The committal service and burial will be at Mount Rose Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Rick Meade. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2007 at the funeral home.

Tommy Edward Mitchell
Mr. Tommy Edward Mitchell age 44, went to be with Jesus Sunday, January 7, 2007.
He was born in Knoxville, TN on March 17, 1962, had lived in Washington County, VA most of his life and attended Patrick Henry High School. He was of the Holiness faith.
He had many friends at the Abingdon Green Apartments who will miss him greatly.
Survivors include his father, J. D. Mitchell, Abingdon, VA, his mother, Loretta Taylor Mitchell, Marion, VA, his sister, Gloria Mitchell, Biloxi, Mississippi, a daughter, Leeann Mitchell, several aunts, uncles and cousins, one niece and one nephew.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Brother Johnny Mitchell and Brother Paul White officiating. Interment
will follow in the Fall Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be uncles and cousins. Honorary pallbearers will be Alfred Taylor, Lloyd Whiteside and Bernie Lankford.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home or anytime at the home at 290 C Senior Drive, Abingdon, VA.
Bertha E. McElyea
Mrs. Bertha E. McElyea, age 69 passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007 in Grace Healthcare Center of Abingdon.
Mrs. McElyea was a member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church and was a native of Johnson County, TN. She moved to Washington County, VA after her marriage to, James N. McElyea, he preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth J. McElyea and wife, Angela, Longmont, Colorado, her daughter, Deborah E. Parks, Abingdon, VA, her granddaughters, Rachel Parks, Abingdon, VA and Jamie McElyea, Longmont, Colorado, a brother and his wife, Wade and Jean Eldreth, Kingsport, TN.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, January 15, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Doug Findley and Evangelist Bob Steele officiating.
Pallbearers will be John Woodward, Bobby Smeltzer, Garnett Hinchey, Dan Hickok, Palmer C. Dotson, Homer Sexton.
The graveside committal service will be conducted Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending are asked to assemble at the funeral home by noon on Tuesday for the procession to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pilgrim Baptist Church or to the Gideons.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.
Helen O. Moncrief
Mrs. Helen O. Moncrief, age 93, past away peacefully at her home Saturday January 13, 2007.
Mrs. Moncrief was born March 31, 1913 in Newport, Kentucky to the late Wilbur Henry Otting and the late Effie Fogle Otting.
Mrs. Moncrief graduated from the University of Cincinnati and was a retired school teacher. She has resided in the Bristol area for the past thirty four years having moved to the area from Copperhill, Tennessee. She was a member of the P.E.O and a member of State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol.
Mrs. Moncrief was preceded in death by her husband, James Basil Moncrief, one granddaughter, April Dawn Moncrief, and one brother and three sisters.
Mrs. Moncrief is survived by one son, James Moncrief and wife, Gaye of Bristol, Virginia and one daughter, Martha Seeger and husband, Gary of Fremont, California. Four grandchildren; Jameson Moncrief and wife, Donna, Christa Duncan and husband, Billy, Steven Seeger and Deborah Parker and husband, Michael. Two sisters, Betty Hill and Ruth Tullis. Four great-grandchildren also survive.
A celebration of the life of Mrs. Helen Ottinger Moncrief will be held at 2:00 P. M. Thursday, January 18, 2006 in the State Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Reed Shell officiating and other members of her church family participating.
The family will receive friends in the home at anytime, 9 Homestead Drive Bristol, Virginia.

Julian Robbins Lowe
Captain Julian Robbins “Bob” Lowe, age 64, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at his home in Abingdon, Virginia.
Bob was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; he was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and entered the United States Naval Service in January, 1965. Commissioned an Ensign in May of that year, he was stationed aboard the USS Frigate Bird (MSC-191). After flight training he was designated a Naval Aviator in March, 1968. Flying primarily the F-4 “Phantom” and the F-14 “Tomcat” aircraft, he served in several east coast fighter squadrons as well as training squadrons in Meridian, MS and Kingsville, TX. During his career he amassed over 5000 flight hours and over 800 carrier landings aboard a dozen aircraft carriers. Other significant assignments include a tour as ship’s navigator aboard the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) and Head of Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Acquisition on the OPNAV staff at the Pentagon. He was Commanding Officer of Training Squadron Twenty-Two and the USS Caloosahatchee (AO-98). His last tour was on the staff at CINCLANTFLT in Norfolk, VA. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Achievement Medal. He retired in August 1994.
Bob is survived by his wife, Suzanne K. Lowe and two sons, Andrew C. Lowe, Stephen R. Lowe and daughter-in-law Catherine C. Lowe, all residing in Abingdon, VA.
Loved by his family, admired by his friends, gentle and kind to all, he had no fear of death and he is at peace with God.
A memorial service will be held to honor Bob at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon, VA at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 18, 2007, with Rev. Robert Tolar officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service.

Clyde Arnold
Mr. Clyde Arnold, age 82, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He had been a resident of the Renaissance House since 1989 and was a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces.
There are no known family members surviving.
A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, TN.
Full military honors will be presented by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard.
Katherine Cole Clark
Mrs. Katherine C. Clark, age 97, of Abingdon, Virginia, Deland and Lake Worth, Florida passed away on Thursday January 18, 2007 after several months of declining health at the Crossings Retirement Center in Lake Worth, Florida.
Mrs. Clark is the widow of Walter Stuart Keene, Sr. and Harold Clark, and she is preceded in death by one son, Walter Keene, Jr.
She is survived by two sons, Paul Keene and wife Ellen of Lantana, Florida, Glenn Keene and wife, Patricia of Sugarland, Texas, and one daughter, Janice Keene of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and one daughter-in-law, Pauline Keene of Lake City, Tennessee. Grandchildren are Walter Keene, III of Lake City, Tennessee, Jill Conners of Asheville, North Carolina, Sherri Keene of Lantana, Florida, Paul Keene, Jr. of Leland, Mississippi, Joel Keene and Travis Keene of Lantana, Florida, Donna Keene and Carolyn Keene of Concord, North Carolina. Ten great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.
A funeral service for Mrs. Clark will be conducted Wednesday January 24, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia with Dr. Frank Preston officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service on Tuesday January 23, 2007.

Marie Robinson Sutherland
Mrs. Marie Robinson Sutherland, age 88, died Friday, January 19, 2007 at the NHC Health Care Center in Bristol, Virginia.
Born on January 7, 1919 in Dickenson County, VA, Marie was a daughter of the late Robert Robinson and Fannie Robinson Anderson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Roscoe Sutherland; her son, Donald Sutherland; her step-father, Trigg Anderson; her brother, Johnny Anderson and her sisters, Myrtle Charles and Nell Owens.
Marie attended the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Spring Creek Presbyterian Church. She had retired from Raytheon after 25 years of service.
Survivors include a very special daughter-in-law, Barbara Mumpower of Abingdon; her grandsons, Randy Sutherland and wife Carla and John Scott Sutherland and wife Shirley all of Bristol, VA; her granddaughter, Julie Venkat and husband Shayan of New Canaan, CT; her sisters, Reba Rowe and Helen P. Sutherland both of Bristol, VA and Ponzell Salyers of Clinchcoe, VA; her great grandchildren Hanna Sutherland, Chelsie Sutherland, John Edmond Sutherland, Adam Hawthorne, Nikki Hawthorne, Michael Hicks, Matthew Hicks, Kathy Artrip, Wendy Townsend; three great-great grandchildren and her special friends, Tom and Ruth Casey, Ed and Pam Mahaffey and Jim and Laurie Stout. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Etta Phyllis Carbary
Mrs. Etta Phyllis Carbary, age 54, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 20, 2007.
Born on February 7, 1952 in Dickenson County, Virginia, Phyllis was a daughter of the late Harold McMillan and Thelma Jesse McMillan. She was also preceded in death by her sister Sue Authenreith.
She was a member of the Valley View Freewill Baptist Church.
The family wishes to give special thanks to the women of the Bristol Dialysis Center and to her very special friends Vickie Gibson and Linda Shelton for their caring help and compassion shown to Phyllis.
Survivors include her husband Billy G. Carbary, Sr.; three sons, Justin Carbary, Billy Carbary, Jr. and his wife Carolyn and David Carbary; her daughter, Melissa Sykes and husband David; her sisters, Mrs. Dolly Spears and husband Robert, Mrs. Ann Miller and husband McKinley and Marie Plemons. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Etta Phyllis Carbary will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday, January 21, 2007 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Bill Nelson officiating. Pallbearers will be Dallas Whaling, Chester Meade, Robby Snider, Phil Nixon, Bill Trougdon and Giles Burke. Honorary pallbearers will be the Ladies of the Bristol Dialysis Center. Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 2:50 P. M. Sunday.
