Mr. Joshua Andrew Harris, age 19, of Abingdon, Virginia passed away June 2, 2007 in Hanover County, Virginia from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mr. Harris was born December 31, 1987 in Washington County, Virginia. He had lived most of his life in Washington County.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ronnie Harris and Charlene Harris.
Mr. Harris is survived by his father, Buford Doss, Jr. and wife, Sharon of Abingdon, Virginia, his mother, Sherry Doss of Bristol, Virginia, grandparents, Buford Doss, Sr. of North Carolina and Barbara Reynolds of Georgia. Five Brothers, Chris Harris of Bristol, Virginia, Cody Doss of Staunton, Virginia, Damian Doss of Abingdon, Virginia, Austin Doss of Abingdon, Virginia, Brian Desrocher of Bristol, Virginia; one sister, Hannah Desrocher of Bristol, Virginia. One step-brother, David Fields of Abingdon, Virginia and one step-sister. Nicole Hearon of Abingdon, Virginia. Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside service will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 9, 2007 in Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Harvey Helton, James Arnold, Thomas Herndez, Jonathan Reynolds, Pete Reynolds, and Danny Sherrett. The family will receive friends in The Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service from 6-9P.M. Friday, June 8, 2007.

James Payne
Mr. James William Payne, age 59, formerly of Jolo, WV, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2007, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a disabled coal miner and had moved to Abingdon in 1995. He was born in Paynesville, WV, a son of the late Ballard Payne and Rodie Payne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, David Lee Payne and Harold Payne, and by his father-in-law, Arnold Blankenship. He was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ in Abingdon.
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Sandra Payne; his son James A. Payne and wife Leslie of Abingdon; his daughter Annette Austin and husband Tony L. of Abingdon; his grandchildren Delaney Austin and William Austin; his sister Lois P. Johnson and husband John of Cleveland, GA; his brothers: Leslie Payne and wife Nancy of Paynesville, WV, and Bobby Payne and wife Brenda of Jolo, WV; two sisters-in-law: Omey Payne and Sharen Payne, both of Paynesville, WV; his step-mother, Hazel Payne of Jolo, WV; and his mother-in-law, Thelma Blankenship of Princeton, WV.
Graveside funeral services for Mr. James William Payne will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2007, at Mountain View United Methodist Cemetery, Rt. 75, Abingdon, with Hobert Kennedy officiating. Those attending the service may meet at Farris Funeral Service for a procession to the cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Richard Williams, Darrell Payne, Max Stanley, Bill Nickles, Kenny Perkins, Gary Shortridge, Johnny Stiltner and Ray Viers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of Macedonia Church of Christ.
The family will visit with friends at the funeral home Saturday, June 9, 2007, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., with a song service beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Roy Norris
MR. ROY LEE NORRIS, 75, of the Denton Valley community, died Friday June 8, 2007 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Norris was the son of the late Cicero and Nannie Norris. He lived most of his life in Washington County, Virginia and had lived in Bristol for the past 12 years. Mr. Norris was an avid fisherman who loved animals and was of the Baptist faith. He was a good man and a loving husband, father, and grandfather, affectionately referred to as “Papaw.” He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Floyd Norris, and his first wife Laura Norris.
He is survived by his wife, Nettie Cox Norris; his son, Randy Norris of Anthony, Florida; 2 daughters, Pam Booher and husband Frank of Abingdon, and Brenda Orfield and husband George of Abingdon; 2 step-daughters, Kim Ball and husband Terry of Bristol, Tn., and Dana Broome and husband Michael of Bristol, Va.; 2 step-sons, David Worley of Abingdon, and James (Jim) Worley and wife Cathy of Boston, Massachusetts; 2 sisters, Nancy Harless and husband Gilmer of Abingdon, and Mary Welch and husband Gary of Abingdon; 4 brothers, Sylvester Norris and wife Louise of Santee, South Carolina, Carl Norris and wife Janet of Braddock, Pennsylvania, J. D. Norris and wife Diane of Bristol, Tn., and Grover Norris and wife Bonnie of Abingdon; Grandson, Jesse Norris of Anthony, Florida; Granddaughter, Brooke Sylvestro and husband Jay of Anthony, Florida; Step Grandsons, Cody Ball, Matthew Worley, Eddie Orfield and wife Lisa; Step Granddaughter, Lakin Ball; Great Granddaughters, Kalifornia Sylvestro and Chasey Sylvestro both of Anthony, Florida.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, June 11, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Paul Price and Pastor Herbert Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 6:00 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. The committal service will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Happy Katherine Totten
Mrs. Happy Katherine Totten, age 88, died Friday, June 8, 2007 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA.
She was born on January 13, 1919 in Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee and was a daughter of the late Campbell Hayter and Bonnie Lou Todd Hayter. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Polly Buchanan and her brothers, Glenn Hayter and Robert Hayter.
Mrs. Totten was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, John A. Totten, Jr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Carol T. Bradley and Larry W. Bradley of Glade Spring, VA; her brother Roy H. Hayter of Kingsport, TN; her sister, Betty Gayle H. Horne of Rogersville, TN; her very special friend, Bell Arnold; her grandchildren, Leisa B. Gruenewald and husband Bruce of Falls Church, VA and John Totten Bradley of Knoxville, TN and her great grandson A. J. Gruenewald.
The funeral service for Mrs. Totten will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Monday, June 11, 2007 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Dr. Steven Pollard officiating.
In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Abingdon Baptist Church, 361 W. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210 or the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude and thanks to Dr. Damian Sooklal, the 3rd floor nursing station at Johnston Memorial Hospital and the following employees of Home Nursing Service of Southwest Virginia- Celesta, Kim and Bonnie for all of their care and support given to Mrs. Totten.

Frances Friesland
MRS. FRANCES FRIESLAND, age 98, a resident of Westhaven Retirement Living, went to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, June 10, 2007.
She was a native of Washington County, Virginia, and had lived in the Abingdon area her entire life. She was a homemaker and attended Greendale Chapel.
Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Gladys Friesland of Abingdon;Verna Friesland of Bluff City, TN; and Margie Friesland of Columbus, Ohio; a cousin, Dixie Fleming of New Mexico; special friends, June Stumbaugh of Abingdon and Janice Maxey of Bristol, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Friesland will be conducted Monday, June 11, 2007, at 8:00 P.M. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. The visitation will be from 7:00 P.M. until the time of the funeral service. The committal service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be Men of the Greendale Chapel and neighbors. Memorial contributions may be made to Greendale Chapel, P. O. Gerald John Hundman
Mr. Gerald John Hundman, age 67, passed away Friday, June 15, 2007 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hundman was born October 10, 1939 in Joliet, Illinois to the late, John Clemons Hundman and Rena Mae Wiles Hundman. Mr. Hundman married Donna Jean Tynan on April 12, 1958 in Bloomington, Illinois at the Holy Trinity Church.
Mr. Hundman moved to Abingdon in 1988 from Reynoldsburg, Ohio. He was a retired mechanical engineer. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was past Grand Knight. Mr. Hundman was very active member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Jubilee House Retreat Center. He had also worked with the PTA and was a member of the Criers Club.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandparents from Abingdon, Henry Clay Wiles and Drucy Bishop Wiles an aunt, Nola Wright from Abingdon.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Jean Hundman, two sons, Jeffery A. Hundman and wife, Beth A. Hundman of Bristol, Virginia and Brad L. Hundman and wife, Jana L. Hundman of Redlands, California. Grandchildren, Brittany A. Hundman and Chandler M. Hundman both of Bristol, Virginia and Laura A. Hundman and Taylor L. Hundman both of Redlands, California. One brother, Robert L. Hundman and wife, Anne of Edmonds, Washington and one sister, Jean E. Coyne of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be conducted Monday, June 18, 2007 at 7:30 P.M. in Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon, Virginia with Father Paul Maier and Father Bob Krenik officiating. The Family will receive friends Monday, June 18, 2007 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Pallbearers will be John Walsh, Jake Faulkner, Jere Maggart, Joe Jandrasits, Mike Doty, William Smith, Mark Hurt, and Ralph Dado. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Thomas Johnson, Dr. Forrest Swan, Jr. Dr. David Delaplane, Chester Ostrowski, Dr. Mark Lukens, and Richard Lukens.

Shirley A. Mullins
Mrs. Shirley A. Mullins, 67, passed away Monday, June 18, 2007 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN.
Shirley was a native of Little Prater, VA in Buchanan County and resided in Buchanan County until moving to Bristol, VA in 1997.
She was a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ and was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse L. Childress and Toy E. VanDyke Childress, brothers, Ken, Tom, Frank and Bill Childress and sisters, Carol Childress and Glema Boyd both of Little Prater, VA.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Tolbert P. Mullins, Bristol, VA,
daughters and their spouses, Vickie and Ronnie Tiller, Fredericksburg, VA and Midge and Teddy Owens, Cumberland, VA, a son and his spouse, Robert and Adonna Mullins, Little Prater, VA, brothers, Cecil Childress and Ted Childress both of Loraine, Ohio, Roger Childress, Little Prater, VA, Virgil “Bo” Childress, Salem, VA, sisters, Lena Dohanys, Loraine, Ohio, Mary Kerr, Columbus, Ohio and Linda Cook, Abingdon, VA, grandchildren, Jonathan Tiller, Miranda Owens, T. J. Owens, step-grandchildren, Joshua Tiller, Becky Boyd, Carolyn Price, step-great-grandchildren, Hailey Tiller, Kaitlin Boyd, Kassandra Boyd, Kailey Boyd, and a very precious “Baby”, many nieces and nephews. Shirley was a surrogate “Mamaw” to many many others.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday June 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Bill Edmonds officiating.
Pallbearers will be Richie Bowman, Tim Hawks, Jordan Watson, David Charles, Jonathan Tiller, Joshua Tiller.
Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Armin Robert Hayden
Mr. Armin Robert “Windy” Hayden, age 88, passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007 at his residence.
Mr. Hayden was born October 8, 1918 in Bristol, Virginia to the late Frank Daniel Hayden and Bessie Lee McCracken Hayden. He was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army. Mr. Hayden was a member and former president of Goodson Lions Club; he was also a member of the Woodman of the World and retired from Reynolds Aluminum. He was an avid bowler, hunter, and fisherman. He was of the Christian faith.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth Hayden, John Hayden, Frank Hayden, and Willie Gene Hayden, and one sister, Gladys Cole.
Mr. Hayden is survived by one son, Michael Robert Hayden of Bristol, Virginia and one daughter, Debra Smith and husband, Steve of Bristol, Virginia. Two granddaughters, Annie Smith and Lindsay Smith both of Bristol, Virginia. Two brothers, Carl Hayden of Bristol, Tennessee and Page Hayden of Bristol, Virginia. Five sisters, Alta Handy, Margaret Leonard, Ethel Widner all of Bristol, Virginia and Dorothy Taylor, Pearl Stevens both of Bristol, Tennessee. Former wife, Virginia Hayden of Bristol, Virginia. Special friend, Julie Farrell of Bristol, Tennessee.
The funeral service will be conducted 7:00 P.M. Saturday, June 23, 2007 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Virginia, with Pastor Darrell Harmon officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. -7:00 P.M. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service Saturday, June 23, 2007 prior to funeral time. Interment service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Sunday June 24, 2007 in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Darrell Harmon officiating and military rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Color Guard.

Opal Eileen Dye
Mrs. Opal Eileen Dye, age 81, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at the Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. She had been residing in Kingsport at the time of her death.
Born on February 14, 1926 in the Hayter’s Gap Community of Washington County, Virginia, Opal was a daughter of the late Ernest Little and Gladys Syphers Little. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren.
She was a member of the Crossroads United Methodist Church and, along with her husband, had faithfully served the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church for 40 years.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Rev. Charlie C. Dye; her sons and daughters-in-law, C. Wayne & Carolyn Dye of Johnson City, TN and Gary A. & Jan Dye of Kingsport, TN; her grandchildren, Kevin Dye & wife Lori of Greenville, TN and Alex Dye of Kingsport, TN; her great grandson, Christian Wayne Dye of Greenville, TN; her sisters, Mildred Henderson of Abingdon, VA and Kathryn Surber of Bristol, VA; her sister-in-law, Betty Dye of Abingdon as well as several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 P.M. until 7:50 P.M. Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Gerry Jones officiating. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 P. M. Tuesday. The graveside committal and burial service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday, June 27, 2007 in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon.
Those attending the graveside service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 A. M. Wedesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Fred Dye, Tim Pickle, Stewart Nelson, Jerry Henderson, Bill Stephenson and Gene Smith. Honorary pallbearer will be Herman Foster.
In place of flowers, the family has asked that those wishing to honor Opal’s memory should make memorial donations to the church of your choice.

William Watson Thomas
Mr. William “Bill” Watson Thomas, age 67, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 24, 2007.
Bill was a well known contractor in Washington County, Virginia and surrounding areas for more than 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, French and Ora Thomas of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee and his brother, Willis Dan Thomas of Abingdon, Virginia.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Lilly M. Thomas, five daughters, Patty Kimberlin, Penny Randolph both of Erwin, Tennessee, Betty J. Sexton of Meadowview, Virginia, Barbara Jackson of Wise, Virginia, and Judy Blevins of Abingdon, Virginia. Two sons, Jimmy Mulkey of Abingdon, Virginia and Bobby Mulkey of Salisbury, North Carolina. Seven grandchildren, Wes Norris, Tabitha Jackson, Betty Ledford, Bradley Mulkey, Houston Tittle , Jeremy Garland, and Corey Garland, two great-grandchildren, Joey and Blake Ledford. Two sisters, Mrs. Dean (Ann) Thomas of Bristol, Virginia and Mrs. Marvin (Carolyn) Blair of Gainsville, Virginia, two brothers, Don Thomas and Terry Thomas both of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee; and two special cousins, Nancy South of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, and Stacy (June) Thomas of Rockwood, Tennessee.
The funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 27, 2007 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Darrell Martin and Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Richard Mink, Don Norris, Adam Orfield, Tony Orfield, Les Orfield, Jimmy McCray, Jeff Kestner, Jr., and Gary McGinnis. Emma Roddy Durrett Fuller
Mrs. Emma Roddy Durrett Fuller, age 74, passed away Monday, June 25, 2007, at her home. She was born in Florida and moved to Abingdon from Clarksville, Tennesee in 1964. She graduated from the University of Tennessee and was a dental hygienist. Mrs. Fuller was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Margaretha Roddy; by her first husband, Dr. Michael Lee Durrett; by one son, Roddy Lee “Bo” Durrett; and one sister, Leona Rand.
Mrs. Fuller is survived by her husband, William T. Fuller; her children: Debbie Caudell and husband Bobby of Abingdon; Mark Durrett and special friend Kelly Holden of Belews Creek, NC; and Michael Durrett and wife Shannon of McDonald, TN; her grandchildren: Shannon Owens and husband James of Albany, KY; Rita Caudell of Bristol, TN; Matthew Durrett and Christopher Durrett, both of Belews Creek, NC; and Grant Durrett and Dawson Durrett, both of McDonald, TN; her sister, Elizabeth Ewouds of Jacksonville, FL; and her step-children: Gail Blair of Abingdon; Gary Fuller of Meadowview; Jann Balue of Superior, CO; and Joel Fuller of Meadowview.
Mrs. Fuller’s family will visit with friends on Thursday, June 28, 2997, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. A funeral mass will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the church with Father Dan Bain and Rev. Mr. Richard Cronican officiating. A committal service will be held Friday, June 29, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Those attending the committal service are asked to gather at the cemetery by 9:45 a.m. Friday morning.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1201 , Abingdon, VA 24212; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Gracie Mae Miller
Gracie Mae Miller, age 91, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA.
Gracie was born on March 31, 1916 in Washington County Virginia. She had attended the Church of God and had been a resident of the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie for the past several years.
She was preceded in death by her mother Ida Shelton and sisters Cleo Larimer and Shirley Nunley.
Gracie is survived by her brother Luther Shelton and wife Pat of Bristol, VA and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A. M. Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Scott Price officiating. Burial will follow the service.
There will be no formal visitation however anyone wishing to sign the register book may visit the funeral home at any time.

Roger Lee Helton
Roger Lee Helton, age 59, died peacefully at his home on Hillside Drive in Abingdon on June 27, 2007. Roger was reared in Glade Spring, Virginia, and was a 1966 graduate of Patrick Henry High School. He held a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degree from Virginia Tech.
Roger was employed by the Washington County Virginia School system as Director of the Guidance Department at Abingdon High School. He had previously served as the Supervisor of Child Protective Services at the Washington County Department of Social Services. His passion in life included travel in his RV and his children.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Henry Helton, his older brother, Ken Helton, and his nephew, Lee Helton.
He is survived by his children, Gabe Helton of Abingdon and Jenny Helton of Boston, MA; his special caregivers, Susan Helton and Judith Mills; his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Mike Bartlett of Fort Mill, SC; his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Joy Helton of Abingdon; his niece and husband, Beth and Bryan Meador of Fort Mill, SC; his nephew and wife, Jeff and Sonya Bartlett of Fredericksburg, VA; his nephew, Scott Helton of Johnson City, TN; and his niece and husband, Robin and Dan Carpenter of Santa Clarita, CA.
Funeral services for Roger Helton will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2007, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, with Dan Jividin officiating. A private entombment service will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2007. The family will visit with friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel.
