In 1976 he also purchased the Johnston Badge Co. of Malden, which made badges for a number of area police departments in the greater Boston area along with commemorative plaques. The name soon changed to Balfour Badge Co. and he operated this company until his retirement to New Hampshire in 1993. It wasn't long before he needed something more to do and he started the American T Shirt Co. of Milford, NH making silkscreen and embroidered shirts, jackets and other items. In 1982, while living in Malden, he was appointed Commissioner of the Malden Police Department by then Mayor Thomas Fallon. Through out the years he had taken continuing educational classes at Northeastern University, North Shore Community College and Haverhill Trade School.

David's most current endeavors have gone toward raising funds for the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, which will soon be dedicated at the State House to honor all Massachusetts Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty. He has raised thousands of dollars through black tie affairs held at the state house and through annual cruises held in Boston Harbor attended by hundreds of people from Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Bush at Caruso’s Diplomat in Saugus. Mr. Balfour, Sr. lived in Amherst, New Hampshire, on Baboosic Lake for the past ten years and was previously from Malden and Melrose.
If David had written his own obituary it would have consisted of thirteen words, which was his favorite quote: “We’re not here for a long time, We’re here for a good time.” David lived his life by those words and by trying to encourage others to do the same along with trying each day to do something kind for someone else.
