Charles D’Alessio
Retired City Clerk of Malden, MA
Charles D’Alessio, a native of Cambridge, was a resident of Malden for over 50 years and served as City Clerk there for four years during 1980 through January of 1984 when he retired. He died October 29 at the age of 88.
During his tenure as City Clerk of Malden, he acted as chief election official, coordinating and overseeing the voting process including tabulating, certifying and reporting the election results. He organized the agenda for city council meetings. He was appointed, by the then Governor King, as a commissioner to administer oaths of office to public officials.
Mr. D’Alessio served in WWII as an Army Air Corp Photographer. He then ran a corner grocery market in Cambridge. From there he worked as a salesman for a while. His career path then took a turn into various civic and public service positions where he found his niche demonstrating strong organizational and leadership skills. He approached his duties in these positions with dedication and pride. They included service as Commercial Motor Vehicle Investigator, President of the Malden Cemetery Association, President of the Eastern Middlesex Realty Trust, Director of the Cedar program in Malden, and then culminating in his appointment as City Clerk of Malden.
He also started to become involved in the political arena. He was an area coordinator in the campaign of Francis Sargent for Massachusetts governor. He next took on the task of campaign manager for councilman candidate, Mike Morelli, which was a testy, hard fought battle in Malden’s Ward 3. These experiences led him to be asked to be campaign manager for two prominent Malden mayors, Jim Conway in the early 1990’s and the first run for office of Malden’s current mayor, Richard Howard, in 1996.
He was also involved in the Toastmasters organization winning many wards for his public speaking and speeches. He served in the Toastmaster leadership positions of President and Area Governor.
Other civic participation included acting as the Ward Three Association president for many years. His main responsibility in this role was the planning and coordinating of the annual Malden Ward Three Fourth of July celebration which was always a very popular and successful event. His civic devotion continued into his retirement years as he served as the Parking Clerk in Malden for ten plus years. He approached that responsibility with the same dedication, organization and pride that he demonstrated as City Clerk.
He is survived by his children and grandchildren; Gaetano (Skip) D’Alessio and his wife Terri of Colorado Springs, CO, Robert D’Alessio of Marina Del Ray, CA, Gail Tocco and her husband Andrew of Pelham, NH and Charles D’Alessio, Jr. and his wife Judy of Reading, grandchildren Matthew and Kara D’Alessio, Lauren and Valerie Tocco, Anthony, Charles III, Denise and Lisa D’Alessio.
