MELVIN ANGLE
CHECK - Melvin Angle passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2002, to be with his mother, Christine Angle, in Heaven. Melvin was a devoted member of the Haven’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He had been the Board Chairman and Superintendent. He loved to sing in the church choir. He was a graduate of Floyd County High School. He later attended New River Community College where he earned an Associate Degree in Business Management. Melvin joined the United States Navy in 1982. During the six years of service, he was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida and Washington, D.C. He spent two tours on the Aircraft Carriers, the USS America, and the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. While overseas, he had the opportunity to see places such as Jerusalem, Italy, and other countries in the Mediterranean.
After his term in the Navy, Melvin became the business manager for Christiansburg Cash Register Company, a family business where he worked with his brothers and other family.
Melvin is survived by: his father, Lewis H. Angle; two brothers and sister-in-law, Steve Angle, Van and Janice Angle; one sister and brother-in-law, Winona A. and David Baker; nephews, Shawn and Shannon Angle and Justin Angle; two nieces, Stacy and Andrea Baker; several aunts and uncles.
We all loved him and we will miss him. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 9, 2002 at 11:00 at Haven’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Reverend Dan Walker officiated. Interment

CARRIE NOLEN MCKNIGHT
FLOYD - Carrie Nolen McKnight, 81, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at Skyline Manor Nursing Home.
Survivors include: one daughter, Phyllis Trail, Rocky Mount; one son, Douglas McKnight, Danville; two brothers, James Nolen, Floyd, Thelma Nolen, Dugspur; two sisters, Macy West, Martinsville, Sue Hatcher, Ridgeway; two grandchildren, Leslie McKnight and Alicia McKnight.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2002 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Jacksonville Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral service.
MARTHA ISABEL WILLIAMS STUMP
ROANOKE - Martha Isabel Williams Stump, 86, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2001 at a local hospital. She was born May 5, 1915 in Floyd County, the daughter of the late James Peter Williams and Rena Shortt Williams. She was the fourth of their ten children. A graduate of Floyd High School, she attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky and graduated from the Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She was a Registered Nurse at Jefferson Hospital before becoming a homemaker and later returned to nursing and retired from Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she was a member of the Sunrise Baptist Church.
She was the widow of James Luther Stump and is survived by: her children, James Luther Stump, Jr. and wife, Shirley of Bristol, Peter Stump of Floyd, Judy Ann Thompson and husband Harry of Livingston, Texas, Roberta Massingill of Wisebaben, Germany; sisters, Ellen Norton of Floyd; Nancy Tyree of Roanoke; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by another son, William Edward Stump.
A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. January 4, 2002 in Sherwood Memorial Park with Charles Beckwith officiating. Oakey’s South Chapel handled arrangements.

SHAWSVILLE - George Cleo Foster Wimmer, 69, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2002 at her home. The daughter of the late Elmer and Maude Foster, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Wimmer, brothers and sisters, Marvin Foster, Clyde Craighead, Edward Foster, Irene Canders and Blain Foster.
She is survived by: sons and daugher-in-law, Thomas and Laurie Wimmer, Pilot, Donald Wimmer, Shawsville; daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn Wimmer, Salem, Patsy and Allen Link, Check; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clinton and Ruby Foster, Shawsville, John and Sue Foster, Radford; sisters and brother-in-law, Wanda and Calvin Powers, Shawsville, Hilda Argabright, Roanoke; grandchildren, Missy and Brad Mullins, Holly Wimmer, Joe Wimmer and Donnie Wimmer; a special friend, Nita Craft.

COPPER HILL - Eloise Angle King, 88, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 23, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard (Bud) King; a daughter, Cora Louis King and a son, Harold Wayne King.

FRANCIS M. RICE
COPPER HILL - Francis Marion Rice, 89, died Monday, January 21, 2002, in Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. He was a former resident of Seven Mile Ford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Frye Rice and was a member of the Seven Mile Ford United Methodist Church. He served with the Seabees on Wake Island during World War II.
He is survived by: one daughter, Kitty R. Burnette, Copper Hill; one sister, Beulah Owens, Stuart; one grandson, Wayland Burnette, Jr., Copper Hill.
Funeral service was conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2002 in Williams Funeral Home Chapel,Chilhowie, with Reverend John Graham officiating. Burial was in The Middle Fork Cemetery.

A. LOWELL ALTIZER
CHRISTIANSBURG-A.Lowell Altizer, 85, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, July 5, 2002. Originally trained as an accountant at National Business College, he later decided to further his studies graduating from Freed Hardeman College, Henderson, Tennessee, to become a minister and evangelist of the Church of Christ.
He was instrumental in helping to establish churches of Christ in Christiansburg, Radford, Blacksburg, Pearisburg and Collinsville. During that time, he was involved in evangelistic missions preaching in eighteen states.
He was also a frequent speaker at lectureships across the country including the Freed Hardeman lectureships, which he attended for fifty-two consecutive years.
In recent years, he assisted in organizing the Virginia Lectureships working with churches of Christ throughout the State of Virginia.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Mellie S. Altizer, five brothers, Elgin, Roy, Kermit, Percy and Vernal, one sister, Oprah Elkins, and grandson, Chad Johnson.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Faye Mitchell Altizer; two daughters and spouses, Sandra and Dennis Johnson, Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Suzi and David Rogers, Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren and spouses, Nicole and David Singleton, Hendersonville, Tennessee, Amanda and Jay Griffin and Brooke and Valentin Kovalenko all of Jacksonville, Florida; great-grandchild, Alexis Lee Singleton; one brother-in-law, Ray Mitchell, Floyd, two sisters-in-law, Maynis Mitchell Howlett, Christiansburg, Gloria Altizer, Roanoke; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 8, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel. A long time friend of over fifty years, Mr. Clayton Winters conducted the service.
Interment
followed in the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

SALEM - Aldene Sowers Vest, 83, passed away Monday, June 24, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Vest.
She and her husband, both natives of Floyd County were long-time residents of Fairfax and were members of the Oakton Church of the Brethren in Vienna.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Basil Sowers; two sisters, Evelyn Walters and Laveta Phelps.
She is survived by: two sisters, Geneva Mitchell of Roanoke, and Joy Huff of Floyd; one brother, Chester Sowers of Floyd, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service was held on Thursday, June 27, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, with Reverend Wendell Eller officiating.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Williams of Floyd, a special nephew, Harless Poff, Bluewell, West Virginia, special nieces, Lucille Graham of Roanoke and Helen Williams of Bluewell, West Virginia.

CHECK - Charles Tiras Conner, 94, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2002 at Skyline Manor Nursing Home in Floyd where he received wonderful love and care while he was there. He was a long time member and deacon of the Salem Primitive Baptist Church (Head of the River) also trustee of the church and church cemetery.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Irene Janney Conner and two sons, Bobby and Paul Conner.

ROANOKE - Carmon Ethelbert Hylton, 91, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002 at his home. He was a retired manager of the Roanoke City Water Department.
Carmon was a loving father and grandfather who treasured his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Bundy Hylton.

CHECK - Linda Lou McGuire, 52, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002 in UVA Medical Center.
She is survived by: her husband of 33 years, Thomas H. McGuire; three sons, Thomas H. McGuire II, Mark McGuire, Lindburg McGuire; daughters, Toni McGuire; step-daughter, Anne M. McGurie; three sisters, two brothers, two foster brothers, seven grandchildren; special friends, Larry and Traci Smith, Kristi Litchard; a host of friends.

CLARICE SMITH REED
BENT MOUNTAIN - Clarice Smith Reed, 95, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at Richfield Nursing Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cletus A. Reed. She attended Lawrence Memorial United Methodist Church on Bent Mountain. She, along with her husband, owned and operated Reed’s garage on Bent Mountain for many years. She was a retired Registered Nurse who through the years helped many families in the area. She was a charter member of the Bent Mountain Woman’s Club.
Surviving are: one niece, Margaret S. Bradford, four nephews, John D. Harman, James S. Lough, Harry A. Lough, and John Slater; special friends, James and Mary Murrie, Ivadell Janney, Lois R. Overstreet and Homer and Aldene Reed.
Services were at Oakey’s South Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2002. The Reverend William Jester officiated. Interment
followed in Evergreen Burial Park.

GRACE JANE ALLS SEWELL
CHRISTIANSBURG - Grace Jane Alls Sewell, 95, formerly of Salem, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2002. She was the last surviving of eight children. She was born to Nanny Mary Thompson Alls and Harvey G. Alls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Ray Sewell, sons, Alfred Wade Sewell and Sherman Stuart Sewell.
Surviving are: one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Marden and Louise Hubbard Sewell of Floyd; daughters-in-law, Anne Juel Sewell of Culpepper and Geraldine Reynolds Sewell of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

GROVER WAYNE SMITH
VINTON - Grover Wayne Smith, (CB handle, Robin Hood), 61, was called home to be with his Lord on Thursday, March 14, 2002. He was a driver for Overnite Transportation for 27 years and was a devoted member of Vinton Wesleyan Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Geneva Gaye Smith.
Survivors include: his wife of 25 years, Shelby Smith; his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Norman Carroll, Rockville, Maryland; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Tonya Smith, Ridgeway, Michael and Cheri Carroll, Vinton; grandchildren, John Michael, Nathan , Patrick, Devin, Victoria, Grace and Christina; sisters. FLOYD - Jamie Lee Swartz, 28, formerly of Rocky Mount died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. He was manager of Owl Hollow Horse Farm in Floyd County and was preceded in death by his father, Norman W. Swartz, Sr., grandparents, Paul W. Swartz, Sr. and George and Pearl Craig.
