COLORADO - Hazel Ellen Barrett,67, died peacefully in her home on Friday, August 1, 2003.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Barrett and her son, Bradley Gene Vaughn of Willis. Memorial services will be held at the Hylton-Vaughn Cemetery in Willis on a later date.
CLOVIS CLINE MARTIN BRILL
ROANOKE - Clovis Cline Martin Brill, died in Lewis-Gale Hospital on Wednesday, July 30, 2003. She was 89 years old. Born May 14, 1914 in Franklin County, she also lived as a child in Patrick County before moving to Floyd County. She attended the Cannaday School in Floyd, where she studied Latin and Classic Literature and developed into a passionate, lifelong reader. She graduated from high school in Martinsville and received her cap as a Registered Nurse from Riverside General Hospital in Newport News. As a Second Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, her service included nursing aboard a hospital ship in the Pacific Theater. Later stationed in Texas, she nursed and then married Bill Brill of Austin, Texas. After raising her children in Texas, she returned to Virginia to help care for her mother and sister in Roanoke. During this period, she nursed for many years on the fourth floor of Lewis-Gale Hospital. In the last years of her life, her passions included her family, her church, her friends and Mexican food.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Dollie Jane Martin, her brother, Carl "Red" Martin and sister, Edith Martin Power. She will remain in the hearts of her children, Arno William Brill, Patricia Jane Brill and Barbara Ann Clary; her grandchildren, David Dozier, Karen Harper and Sandi Austin; her sister, Geneva Martin Bates; her brothers, Lester Guy Martin and William H. Martin; her sister-in-law, Joan Martin; her niece and nephews, Deidre Jane Martin, Scott Martin, Randy Martin, Greg Marin and Danny Bates; her dean cousin, Minnie Board; her special friends, Carole Denney and Kate Holbrook; and her church family at Cave Spring Baptist Church.
Funeral service was held at Cave Spring Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2003 with Dr. Fred A. Holbrook and Pastor Jim Reeves officiating. Interment
with full military honors followed in Restvale Cemetery, Floyd County. Oakey's South Chapel handled arrangements.
LYNN GRAHAM LAING
FLOYD - Lynn Graham Laing, 81, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2003 in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Laing.
Survivors include: sons and daughter-in-law, Walter Laing, Beltsville, Maryland, David and Donna Laing, Salem, Mark Laing, Dublin; daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and James Brunson, Sebasdtolpol, Mississippi, Sharlene and Frank Pingetore, Star, Mississippi; sisters, Clieve Mowdy, Lottie Graham, Newton County, Mississippi; brother Dow Graham, Newton County, Mississippi, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 5 at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ralph Duncan officiating. Burial followed in Topeco Cemetery.

FLOYD - Kenneth Ray Pauley, 53, Floyd, Passed through the light of God, July 29, 2003.
Kenneth left loving him in this life his wife: Emma Catherine Vaughn Pauley; mother, Mabel DeHart and Turner; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Barbara Pauley, Roger and Becky Pauley, Robert and Trina Pauley; two sisters and their family: Linda and Mike Harman and Matt, Betty Sue and Ronnie Underwood and Steven, Allen, and Brian. He was also loved by his wedded family mother-in-law, Ruby Lorton and Stanley; two brothers-in-law and their family, Frank and Nancy Vaughn, and children Robyn and Andy, Neil and Little Bill, Zack and Gabrielle; Joel and Lee Ann; Tom and Sandra Vaughn, and children Lynne and Clay Coffey and Josh, Tina Reinhardt and Matthew, Sharon and Darrell Quesenberry, Dustin and Stephanie, and John Vaughn; many wonderful aunts and uncles added special moments to his life as well as many special friends who were there during the hard times and during the laughter.
Kenneth was a 1969 graduate of Floyd County High School. He spent his life as a water well driller. Kenneth learned his craft from his father William Allen (Bud) Pauley, who learned it from his father O. B. Pauley, who learned it from his father Allen Pauley. Kenneth's wife and brothers will continue the business with the honesty and integrity that he instilled in them. His dependability and fine sense of humor will be missed by all who can smile. Visitation was held at Gardner Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday evenings, July 31 and August 1 from 7 until 9. Burial service was 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 2, at Gardner Funeral Home.

COPPER HILL - Sylvia King Poff, 88, passed away in Skyline Manor Nursing home.
She is survived by her husband, Seth "Joe" Poff; two daughters and a son-in-law, Faye King and Rosalie and Steven Moran, all of Copper Hill, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

He was a retired Captain of the United States Marine Corp.

FLOYD - James Lee Midkiff, 63, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Julia Midkiff.

COL. WILLIAM "BILL" HINCKLEY MITCHELL VI
CALIFORNIA - Col. (ret.) William "Bill" Hinckley Mitchell VI , 71, of Floyd County and Santa Clarita, California, died March 28, 2003 at his California home.
He leaves behind his wife, Annette Mitchell, of Santa Clarita, California. He was dearly loved by his three children, Heather Brodie of Dugspur, and her husband Dane Brodie, Viviane McCormick of Raleigh, North Carolina and her husband Mack McCormick, and William Mitchell VII of Raleigh, North Carolina. Col. Mitchell will also be missed by his former wife of many years and mother of his children, Shirley Hayden of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Colonel Mitchell was a devoted Christian and worshipped at the Topeco Church of the Brethren as well as his California church. Colonel Mitchell retired following a distinguished career in the United States Army during which he defended his country in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
During his 31 years of active duty, he served in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and several other locations around the United States and the world including many years with the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon. For his work Colonel Mitchell not only received numerous commendations and high-level honors by the United States Army, but he was also given the highest level of recognition awarded to non-nationals by the South Vietnamese and Saudi governments. Colonel Mitchell's innovative ideas, dynamism, vision and thoughtful nurturing of others' abilities made a difference. Because of him and his contributions, we are all a little safer. Colonel Mitchell loved Floyd County and its people. We shall all miss him.
EDNA PHILLIPS
INDIAN VALLEY - Edna Phillips, 80, of Skyline Nursing Home and formerly of Indian Valley passed away Saturday, March 29, 2003. She was the widow of Freeman Phillips.
Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Irene and Walter Moore, Jr., Dugspur, Reda and Wayne Quesenberry, Shawsville, Judith and Clarence Huff, Indian Valley; son, Bobby Lee Phillips, Indian Valley; sister, Luvenia Phillips, Indian Valley; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Monday, March 31, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Reverend Vinton Quesenberry, Reverend James Walker and Reverend Kenneth Poston officiating. Interment
followed in the Montgomery Cemetery, Indian Valley. The family wishes to thank the staff of Skyline Manor Nursing Home for their loving care.
GLADYS SUTPHIN DURHAM COX
INDIAN VALLEY - Gladys Sutphin Durham Cox, 92, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by: one sister, Clarice Duncan, Blacksburg; one brother, Woodrow Sutphin, Indian Valley; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Saturday, January 25, at 11 a.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville. Reverend Joseph Cox and Reverend Ken Hopkins officiated. Burial was in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery.
JAMES H. DICK
STAUNTON - James Harley Dick, 57, husband of Rebecca Jean (Thayer) Dick of 576 Hilltop Dr., Staunton, died Sunday,January 26, 2003, in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.
He was born on August 9, 1945 in Rockingham County, a son of Conrad Joseph and Eliza Moranda Olinger Dick.
He was a production supervisor with American Safety Razor Company with twenty-four years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Dick and a sister, Jane Rakes.
Survivors include his wife and a daughter, Jennifer Linn Dick at home.
A service was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, in the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial followed in Mt. Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery.
OSCAR ALLEN HARRIS
WOOLWINE - Elder Oscar Allen Harris, 90, died Friday, January 24, 2003 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center of Stuart.
He was born in Floyd County on January 2, 1913 to the late Jethro and Ella Moore Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mamie Harris and Alma Baker, and four brothers, Oden James Harris, Archie Leslie Harris, Miles Asa Harris, and Newton Carlis Harris.
Elder Harris served for over 53 years as a Primitive Baptist minister. He served at Indian Creek, Jack's Creek, Bethel, New River, Meadow View, and Danville Primitive Baptist Churches. He was a moderator for the New River Association. He also worked as a sawmiller, a contractor, and a clockmaker. He is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Linda Belle Surratt Harris of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bert Hatcher of Manassas; four sons and daughters-in-law, Miles and Shelby Harris of Stuart, Leon and Beverly Harris of Roanoke, James Dale Harris of Woolwine and Mavin and Crystal Harris of Woolwine; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Hodges of Willis and Leta High of Floyd.
Funeral service was held Monday, January 27, at 11 a.m. at Jack's Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Danny Parker, Milton Gunter, and Richard Hurst officiating. Burial followed in the Jack's Creek Church Cemetery.

HEARLD DANIEL "DANNY" LAWSON
FLOYD - Hearld Daniel, "Danny" Lawson, 64, passed away at his home Friday, January 17, 2003.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired employee of Pulaski Furniture Company with 20 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earnest Richard Lawson.
He is survived by: his wife, Bertie S. Lawson of Floyd; son, Sgt. Kevin Lawson, U.S. Marines, California and his wife April; four daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Danny Wyatt, NC; Suzan and Ralph Roop, Sherry and Carlie Marshall, all of Christiansburg; Vanessa Myers, Floyd; mother and step-father, Ada and Blaine Sutphin, Floyd; brothers and sister-in-law, Manuel and Wanda Lawson, Christiansburg, Saford Lawson, Kentucky; sister, Polly Lawson, NC; sisters-in-law and husbands, Daisy and Richard Lawson, Lois and Gilbert Chaffin, Lula Bell and Benny Jones, all of Christiansburg; he was blessed with 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers for Mr. Lawson were Mike, Terry, Ricky and Gary Lawson, Carlie and Justin Marshall. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, Christiansburg. The service was conducted by Rev. Will Roberts.

GEORGE LING, JR.
CHECK - George Ling, Jr., 75, passed away, January 24, 2003 at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victoria and George Ling, Sr., stepfather, Ezra Deel, and three brothers, John William Ling, Leroy Deel, Troy Deel. He worked in Western Virginia coal mines for 26 years. He was a member of Alleghany Church of Christ.
He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Ruby M. Ling of Check; six children and spouses, Beverly Stiltner of Check, John Allen Ling of Penhook, Connie and Ronnie Thompson of Penhook, Terry and Mildred Ling of Dalton, GA, Tony and Elizabeth Ling of Check, Dallas and Tammy Ling of Check; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Sylvia and Marvin Hill, Lovon and Miles Ratliff, Annalee and Lawrence Howard; brother and sister-in-law, James and Alice Ling; twelve grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held on Monday January 27, at 11:00 AM at Alleghany Church of Christ, Christiansburg, with Willard P. Boyd officiating. Interment
in Wilson Cemetery.
GLADYS REED PUGH
WILLIS - Gladys Reed Pugh, 93, was called to Glory Thursday, January 23, 2003. She was greeted by her husband, Fred, who had gone ahead on February 12, 2002. What a joyous reunion as they met again to be together forever. Gladys was born September 14, 1909 in Alum Ridge to U. Merit and Maggie Alley Reed. She lived her life in sight of her homeplace. She married Fred J. Pugh April 20, 1930, a union which lasted 71 years, nine months and 23 days. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Besides being a homemaker, she was active in the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren as long as her health permitted. She served in many ways including being a Sunday School teacher, choir member, President of the Ladies Aid and custodian with her husband. She had been lovingly cared for by her husband and family for more than ten years. Care was turned over to Esther Sommers in September 2001. She was the last of the children of Merrrit and Maggie Reed, who preceded her in death along with her brothers and sisters, Cora Reed Dulaney, Harold, Bently and U. Dale Reed and four great-grandchildren Miranda, Brandon, Brendon and Devin Gray.
Left to cherish her memory are: her sons and daughters-in-law, Freddie and Barbara Pugh, Floyd, Larry and Phyllis Pugh, Dale J. Pugh, Riner, Reverend Michael Pugh, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Mamie (U. Dale) Reed, Mt. Holly, North Carolina, Marieta (Bently) Reed, Roanoke; brothers and sister-in-law, Don and Iva Pugh, Collinsville, Ray Pugh, Bluefield; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
The family sincerely thanks Mrs. Esther Sommers and her family for the loving care given mother while she waited her home going call.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26, at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Reverend Roy Turpin and Reverend Eli Yoder officiating. Interment

GILBERT P. "GIL" ROBERTS
FLOYD - Gilbert P. "Gil" Roberts, Jr., 51, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2003. He was born in Portsmouth on September 2, 1951. He graduated from York High School and attended Wingate College and V.P.I. He was a world-reowned stone carver and lapidary artist.
He is survived by: parents, Bob and Trudy Roberts, Yorktown; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Jay Railey, Charlotte, North Carolina; nephew and spouse, Jay and Jennifer Hall, Clayton, North Carolina; two great-nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2003, at Gardner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the memorial service.
