OSCAR GARFIELD JONES
FLOYD - Oscar Garfield Jones, 86, passed away Monday, August 26, 2002 at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. He was an army veteran of World War II and a member of Christiansburg Moose Lodge.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Casey Jones.
Survivors include: wife, Elizabeth Atkins Jones, Floyd; two daughers and sons-in-law, Joyce and Connie Graham, Floyd, Leona and Gordon Brown, Henry; one special son, James Garfield Bowman, Austinville, one brother and sister-in-law, Woody and Myra Jones, Bassett; three sisters, Lora Atkins, Lucy Atkins, Bassett, Geneva Shivley, Ferrum; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services was held 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2002 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Graham Mitchell and Reverend Barry Lell officiating. Burial followed in Maple Grove Cemetery, Franklin County.

DALTON, HAROLD EUGENE
INDIAN VALLEY - Harold Eugene Dalton, 80 of went home to the with the Lord on Sunday, January 12, 2003. He was born on November 20, 1922 in Floyd County. He retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 33 years of service as a blacksmith. Mr. Dalton served in the 3rd Infantry, Artillery Division, of the U. S. Army where he was awarded a purple heart.
He issurvived by: his wife of 56 years, Effie Mae Dalton; one daughter and son-in-law, Lois D. & Charles N. Millis of Indianapolis, IN, two sons and daughters-in-law, Titus E. & Glenda S. Dalton of Christiansburg, Lowell B. & Nina R. Dalton of Blacksburg, one brother and sister-in-law, Harry C. & Ruthanne Dalton, one sister, Ila O. Dalton, all of Indian Valley, four grandchildren, David & Jasmine Millis of Indianapolis, Bethany Dalton of Blacksburg and Chad Dalton of Christiansburg.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 16th at 11:00 a.m. at the Horne Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Poston officiating. Interment will follow at the Showalter Cemetery in Indian Valley with military rites by Floyd VFW Post #7854 and the American Legion Post #127 The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eugene Dalton Memorial Fund, (Survivor Fund), 100 W. Main Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073.
The family wishes to thank the community, area churches and all their family and friends who have prayerfully given comfort, words or encouragement and financial support during this difficult time. The Dalton family is being served by Horne Funeral & Cremation Service, Christiansburg.

HAZEL AKERS DUNCAN
FLOYD - Hazel Akers Duncan, 85, formerly of Radford, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2003 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Radford and the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oather L. Duncan; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Akers, and a brother, Hestle Akers.
Survivors include: two brothers, Newton L. Akers of Riner and Thomas Akers of Christiansburg; four sisters, Anne Altizer of Davidson, North Carolina, Mildred Pannell of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dorothy Rutter of Floyd, and Joyce Shortt of Newport News; two brothers-in-law, Jim Rutter and Marshall Shortt; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2003 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Mr. Larry Phillips and Reverend Don Peters officiating. Entombment followed in Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin. Contributions may be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad.

DAISY ALTIZER GRAHAM
RADFORD - Daisy Altizer Graham, 83, passed away Friday, January 10, 2003 in a Richmond hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas R. Graham, parents, Sherman and Minnie Burton Altizer of the White Rock Community, brothers, Hester Altizer and Hassel Altizer.
She is survived by: one son, Jerry L. Boyd, Clarksville, TN; daughters, Phyllis Baker, San Antonio, TX, Barbara Evans, Montpelier, VA; Gail Plunkett, Moneta, VA; brother, Grover Altizer, Barracksville, WVA; sisters, Freda Baker, Lincoln University, PA, Juanita Grady, West Grove, PA; ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2003 at White Rock Church of the Brethren with Reverend Kenny Wurzburger and Reverend Michael Pugh officiating. Burial followed in White Rock Cemetery. Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.

LEO HARMON
ROANOKE - Leo Harmon, 79, entered into rest to be with the Lord on Monday, January 13, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Lucille S. Harmon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired cabinetmaker and installer for Perdue Cabinet Company with 21 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post #3 and the DAV H.H. MacKenzie Chapter #3.
Surviving are: his daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Kenny Conner of Goodview, Sylvia H. Thompson of Salem, Linda and J. DeWitt Thomas of Check; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael W. and Janet Harmon of Salem, Steve R. and Marty Harmon of Vinton, ten grandchildren, Brian and Carla Hazelwood, Kenneth and Karen Thompson, Karen and Jay Cunningham, Frank and Crissie Thomas, Patrick and Toni Thomas, Laura Thomas, Courtney Conner, Joshua Jones and Zachary Jones; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Hurley of Maryland, Bernice Shilling of Roanoke; brother, Dennis E. Harmon of Roanoke; special friends, Dr. Ed and Jean Williams and family, Lanie Shumate and family, Reverend Donald R. Douglas and a loving church family from Penn Forest Church of God.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2003. The Reverend Sam Belisle officiated. Interment followed in the Cunningham-Harmon Family Cemetery, Roanoke County. Military graveside rites by VFW Post #1264. Memorials may be made to Penn Forest Church of God or the Cave Spring Rescue Squad. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel.

CORA KENLEY QUESENBERRY
FLOYD - Cora Kenley Quesenberry, 104, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Indian Valley on February 12, 1898.
Surviving are: a sister-in-law, Gladys Quesenberry of Willis; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2003 at Wood Funeral Home with Reverend Bryon Childress and Reverend Dale Bowman officiating. Interment was in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery. Contributions may be sent to Buffalo Mountain Conference Center, C/O B.C. Childress, 1993 Childress Road, Willis, VA 24380. Wood Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.

VERNIE R. ROBERTSON
TANEYTOWN, MD - Vernie Reed Robertson, 91, died Sunday, January 5, 2003 at Gettysburg Hospital.
She was born February 3, 1911 in Floyd County. She was the daughter of the late James S. and Daley Alley Reed.
She was the wife of Charles R. Robertson, who died in 1987.
She was a member of Union Bridge Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are: daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline and Carroll Ford of Westminster, Millie and Ralph Coshun of Littlestown, PA and Nancy and Kenneth Hunter of Roanoke; sister, Iva Ohler of Taneytown, MD; brother, Frank Reed of Blacksburg; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by infant son Claude Robert Robertson, three sisters and four brothers.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 9, 2003 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, with her pastors, Reverend James Benedict and Anna Lease, officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

LEWIS C. SHEARING
FLOYD - Lewis Clyde Shearing, 66, died Monday, January 13, 2003 at his home. He was born in Flint, MI and was formerly employed by the Buick Division of General Motors Corp. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Fern Harrison Shearing and his sister, Thelma Mae Rice.
Surviving are: his wife, Lora Maxine Shearing, Floyd; sons, Mark Farley, Henry Farley, Charleston, WV, Joseph Farley, Johnny Farley, Christiansburg, Timothy Shearing, Riner, Terry Yehle, Michigan; daughters, Bonnie Winter, Charleston,WV, Teresa Brammer, Indian Valley, Kathy Hopkins, Christiansburg, Connie Goad, Rose Shearing, Floyd, Cindy Rose, Michigan, Brenda, Michigan; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jackie and Ron Gunn, Floyd, Dorothy Rynca, Radford, Patty and Clarence Chaney, Clifton, CO; 38 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a..m. Thursday, January 16, 2003 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Junior Bentley officiating. Burial will follow in Laurel Branch Cemetery. Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, is in charge of arrangements.

ELIZA WILSON
COPPER HILL - Eliza Wilson, 87, passed away Friday, January 10, 2003. Surviving are: nieces and nephews, Irene Moran, Sylvia Yopp, Hilda Radford and Ralph M. Stump, all of Copper Hill and Doris King of Richmond; several nieces and nephews of Maryland; and a sister-in-law, Lucy Wilson, of Bassett.
Graveside funeral service was held Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Restvale Cemetery with the Reverend Dale Walker officiating. Wood Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.

BETTY JEAN MATTOX CUSTER
FLOYD - Betty Jean Mattox Custer, slipped the bonds of this earthly existence on Saturday, March 15, 2003 after an extended illness. She was born January 15,1926 in Bedford County to William Davis Mattox and Bettie English Mattox who preceded her in death.
She lived most of her adult life in Staunton and had resided the past ten months with her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Preston Boggess in Floyd County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry and by 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include: daughter, Sharon; grandchildren, Tate Custer Love, Stauton, Julie Spradlin, Grottoes, Wendy Fletcher, Stuarts Draft; three siblings, Charles A. Mattox, Vinton, Dorothy Madeline Mitchell, Gibsonia, PA, Marvin Mattox, Moneta.
Burial was at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke, on Monday, March 17 at 11 a.m. with a brief service at the Mausoleum. Reverend Paul Pingel officiated. Plans for a memorial service within the next month are still being formulated.
Those wishing to remember Betty are requested to make a donation to either the Daily Living Center, 990 E. Hoperman Parkway, Waynesboro, VA 22980 or to Good Samaritan Hospice, 3825 Electric Road, Suite A, Roanoke, VA 24018. Arrangments by Oakey's South Chapel.

LALA ALLEN EPPERLY
FLOYD - Lala Allen Epperly, 98, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003 in a Salem Nursing Home.
Surviving are five cousins and their spouses, Stella Lancaster of Bent Mountain, Allen and Ruby Stone of Bent Mountain, Dillard and Lura Dean Stone of Christiansburg, Reba and Nelson Graighead of Roanoke and Emma and Senator Robert Byrd of McClean; special nephew and niece, Edward and Dolly Epperly of Christiansburg.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 at Wood Funeral Home with Elder Hale Terry officiating. Interment was held in Radford Cemetery.

DAVID WOODRUM FRANCIS
PILOT - David Woodrum Francis, 85, passed away February 17, 2003. He was founder and manager of Serenity House. He was a veteran of World War II, having obtained the rank of Captain in the Army Air Force.
Surviving are: two daughters and husbands, Shannon and Harold Tate of Waynesboro, Franciene and Charles Hearley of Newport, North Carolina; several grandchildren; special friends, Laura, Kevin, Shirley and Opal and residents of Serenity House.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Serenity House Chapel with Reverend Joey Cunningham and Reverend William Wade officiating. Military honors by Floyd VFW Post #7854 and Floyd American Legion Post #127 at Serenity House Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the David and Lillian Francis Memorial Scholarship Fund, C/O Virginia Tech Foundation, 201 Pack Bldg, 526 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, VA 24061.

MARY LYNN YEARY MURRIE
COPPER HILL - Mary Lynn Yeary Murrie, 72, died Saturday, March 15, 2003. She was a retired educator with 35 years of service for the Floyd County School System. She was a proud member of the Bent Mountain Women's Club for 51 years. She was also a member of Lawrence Memorial United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kemp and Burena Yeary, and a brother, Raye Yeary, all of Lee County.
Surviving are: her husband, Jim Murrie; daughters, Frances Murrie, Debbie Finney; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Anna Caudill Murrie; grandchildren, Neal Finney, Michelle Finney, Kelli Murrie, and Allison Murrie; sister-in-law, Mary Sue Yeary; nephew and wife, Bobby and Judy Yeary.
Services were held at Oakey's South Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 17. The Reverend William Jester officiated. Interment followed in Restvale Cemetery in Floyd County.
Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Lawrence Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 46, Bent Mountain, VA 24059.

JOSEPH STEPHEN RICHARDSON
RINER - Joseph Stephen Richardson, 58, passed away, March 12, 2003.
He is survived by: mother, Ollie Richardson of Winston Salem NC; two brothers, Samuel K. Richardson, Jr. of Pfafftown NC, Jim Richardson of Riner.
Funeral service was held on Friday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Floyd, with Rev. Paul Pingel officiating.
Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd, handled arrangements.

HERBERT HARMOND SHELOR
FLOYD - Herbert Harmond Shelor, 80, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2003.
He was born January 6, 1923. He served in World War II in the 104th Infantry Division, 415th Infantry, A Company in the European-Mid-Eastern Campaign, earning several medals including the Bronze Star.
He was an active lifetime member of the Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and Floyd American Legion Post #127. He was a trustee and founding member of the Captain Daniel Shelor Furnace Memorial Park, charter member of Floyd Moose Lodge Lodge #2300, Millwright Local Union and United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, and a member of the Presbyterian Church of Floyd.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Henri Etta Shelor, brothers, Henry Shelor and Ernest Shelor, and a sister, Eileen Burnet.
Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Lenna T. Shelor, Floyd; sons and daughters-in-law, Warren and Janice Shelor, Floyd, Steve and Rebecca Shelor, Blacksburg, Bob and Donna Shelor, Pembroke; grandchildren, Ronnie and Donna Shelor, Christopher Shelor, Ryan and Alexandra Shelor, John, Matthew and Michael Shelor; brother, George W. Shelor, Floyd; sister-in-law, Maude Shelor, Floyd; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Dr. Joe Baum; other survivors include Thelma Hylton, Marlene Jones, Peggy and Paul Casey, L.C. and Shelby Trail, Ray and Bridgett Trail.
Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 17 at the Presbyterian Church of Floyd with the Reverend Shirley Larson officiating.
Interment was in Jacksonville Cemetery with military rites by Floyd V.F.W. Post #7854 and American Legion Post #127.

WILLIAM TRUMAN SPENCE
INDIAN VALLEY - William Truman Spence, 88, passed away Friday, March 14, 2003 at his home.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nora Lala Spence and a son, William Fay Spence.
Survivors include: his half sisters, Daisy Hylton, Geneva Worrell, Indian Valley; nieces and nephews, Evonne Sutphin, Linda Bussie, Leon Gallimore, Dale Worrell, Iressa Fawcett, Rosa Stout, Cobern Quesenberry, Winnie Vaughn, Verlie Whitley, Lena Duncan, Lori Guunter, Helen Hayes, Eloise Funkhouser, Phyllis Boyd.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with Reverend Vinton Quesenberry officiating.
Interment followed in Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery.
