Mrs. Iola Blackwell
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Iola Blackwell, 72, of 1104 Shaw St., died at 9:13 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Alamance Reional Medical Center after a short illness.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife for 52 years of Mr. John Henry Blackwell, who survives. She was the daughter of the late Ms. Minnie McAdams. She was a member of Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Deaconette Board. She was a former member of the Sweet Gum Charity Club, a missionary and pastor’s aide member at Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. John H. Blackwell Jr. of Burlington; a daughter, Ms. Janice Blackwell of Burlington; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Everett Dickerson, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Mr. George Ross Phillips
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Mr. George Ross Phillips, 75, of 413 Second Street, formerly of Siler City, N.C., died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000.
He is the husband of Mrs. Clara S. Phillips, who survives. He was a retired highway engineer with the N.C. Department of Transportation and a member of the Boston Terriers Club of North Carolina.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Kathryn Boling of Burlington, N.C.; a son, Mr. Larry Mabe of Siler City; two sisters, Ms. Jo Ann Phillips of Siler City and Ms. Betty Sue Rives of Goldston, N.C.; a grandchild and great-grandchild of Burlington.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will be at the funeral home following the memorial service.

Mr. Henry F. Huepenbecker
BURLINGTON — Mr. Henry F. Huepenbecker, 97, a resident of Twin Lake Center, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Twin Lakes after six months of failing health.
A native of Sterling, Ill., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Rosalie Anway Huepenbecker, and the son of Mr. William Huepenbecker and Mrs. Sophia Schwartz Huepenbecker, both deceased. He was owner and operator of Radiant Coal Co. in Battle Creek, Mich. He was a graduate of Argubright Business College and a member of the Battle Creek Board of Realtors. He was associated with Lyle Arms Realtors and a homebuilder in the Beadle Lake, Mich. area.
He served in Emmitt Township as treasurer, justice of the peace and clerk. He was president of the Battle Creek Coal Dealers, Battle Creek Credit managers and Beadle Lake Association. He was chairman and delegate to the county and state GOP, and was president of the Baulding School District for seven years. He was president of the Battle Creek Rose Society, and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Raleigh and a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Burlington. He moved to North Carolina in 1980.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Jan) Powell of Gibsonville; one son, Mr. Philip Huepenbecker of Hummelstown, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Doffertien of Marshall, Mich.; a brother, Mr. Joseph Huepenbecker of Hawkinsville, Ga.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mr. Howard Huepenbecker, Mr. John Huepenbecker and Mr. Lawrence Huepenbecker; and a sister, Mrs. Betty H. Mead.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Theodore Strelow, Lutheran minister, and the Rev. Steven Rust, pastor of Macedonia Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 7 Saturday, and immediately following the service. At other times, they will be at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Jan Powell, 207 Travis Lane, Gibsonville.

Mr. Robert Washington Simmons
ELON COLLEGE — Mr. Robert Washington Simmons, 79, of 727 Simmons Road, died at 3 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the Hospice Home.
A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Mr. Berry Washington Simmons and Mrs. Bertha Minor Simmons, both deceased. He was a retired farmer and an Army veteran of World War II. He attended Concord Christian Church.
Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Hattie Smith of Elon College, Mrs. Edna (Kenneth) Faison, Mrs. Lottie Tate and Mrs. Verdie Rice, all of Burlington, and Mrs. Mona (Marvis) Busick of Browns Summit; and three brothers, Mr. Ervin Simmons, Mr. Elbridge Simmons and Mr. Brodie Simmons, all of Elon College.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. William Simmons.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Concord Christian Church by the Rev. Keith Murray, pastor, and the Rev. C. Allen Myers II, pastor of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Annie June Black Moore
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Annie June Black Moore, 81, of 319 N.C. 87 North, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Robert Moore and the daughter of Mr. Carter Black and Mrs. Lillian Fuller Black, both deceased. She was employed with Full Knit Hosiery and Apple House Cafeteria. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon College.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Carlene Black Conklin Self of Graham.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ivy Black Garrett.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 this evening at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. C. Max Allman, pastor of People’s Memorial Christian Church.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linwood Cemetery in Graham.

Mr. Garland O. Thompson
HAW RIVER — Mr. Garland Odell “Red” Thompson, 88, of 324 Roxboro St., died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Durham Regional Medical Center in Durham after several years of failing health, one month serious.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Shirley Thomas Thompson and the son of Mr. Lawrence Alfred Thompson and Mrs. Mamie Stuart Thompson, both deceased. He was retired from R.E.A. Express Agency. After retiring, he operated a lawn mower repair service at his home. He was active in the community, serving on the school board and was involved with the booster club. He was a member of Long’s Chapel United Church of Christ where he served for many years as a deacon and treasurer of the church building fund. He was a member of the Men’s Fellowship.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Rhonda Thompson Pollard of Durham; two brothers, Mr. Ralph Jonathan Thompson of Haw River and Mr. James Stuart Thompson of Graham; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Long’s Chapel United Church of Christ by Dr. Dan Brown, pastor, and the Rev. T. Melvin Williams Jr., pastor of Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham. There will be a reception for family and friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Winston S. Workman
HILLSBOROUGH — Mr. Winston S. Workman, 80, of Millersville, Md., died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at his home after a long illness.
Born April 17, 1920, in Hillsborough, he lived in Maryland for 46 years. He was the husband of Mrs. Annie Louise Workman, who survives, and the son of Mr. Luther Workman and Mrs. Augusta Workman, both deceased. He was a lineman foreman for several companies for 32 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors other than his wife of Millersville include two sons, Mr. Ronnie Winston Workman of Pasadena, Md., and Mr. Ricky Samuel (Dana) Workman of Gaithersburg, Md.; a sister, Ms. Elsie White of Hillsborough; a brother, Mr. Herman Workman of Burlington; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ina Mitchell Johnson
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Ina Mitchell Johnson, 76, of 513 Plantation Drive, died at 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the home of her son, the Rev. Marlin Clarence Johnson of 275 Harmon St., Forest City, after one year of failing health.
A native of Rockingham County, Va., she was the wife of Mr. Clarence Everette Johnson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Perry Mitchell and Mrs. Virgie Cubbage Mitchell, both deceased. She was a member of Graham Wesleyan Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Brenda Faye Doby of Burlington; three sons, the Rev. Marlin Clarence Johnson of Forest City, Mr. Stephen Dale Johnson of Wake Forest and Mr. Paul Dallas Johnson of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Roxie Nesselrolt of Harrisonburg, Va., and Mrs. Bernice Hottinger of Broadway, Va.; five brothers, Mr. Ottis “Jack” Mitchell, Mr. Leon Mitchell and Mr. Clyde Mitchell, all of Harrisonburg, Mr. Theodore Mitchell of Bridgewater, Va., and Mr. John Mitchell of Elon College; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Robert “Buck” Mitchell, and a sister, Mrs. Lillian “Sis” Lohr.

Mrs. Glen Ora Watson
MEBANE — Mrs. Glen Ora Watson, 62, of Mebane, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Born Nov. 15, 1938, in Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Curtis Watson who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Connie Tate and Mrs. Julie Cobb Tate. She attended Orange County Schools and was employed with Orange County School System.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include five daughters, Mrs. Inettia (Ricky) Tate of Graham, Ms. Sylvia (Jerry) White and Mrs. Della (Jimmy) White, both of Durham, Ms. Sandra Watson and Mrs. Julie (Fred) Blanks, both of Efland; two sons, Mr. Ronnie (Tilda) Tate and Mr. Devon (Gail) Watson, both of Efland; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

BURLINGTON — Mr. Lynn Carter Shields, 51, of Greensboro, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at his home after a long illness.
A native of Charles Town, W. Va., he grew up in Albermarle and Burlington. He graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in business education. He was previously employed at Rose’s in Burlington and worked for Rolane Inc. and OnePlace (formerly Church Impressions).
Survivors include five brothers, Mr. Richard F. Shields of Charlotte, Mr. David Shields of Burlington, Mr. Diane Shields of Greensboro, Mr. Chris Arrington of Raleigh and Mr. Kim Arrington of Norfolk, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and George Foster Shields and Marvin G. Arrington.

Mrs. Golda Maye Gallimore Adams
GRAHAM — Mrs. Golda Maye Gallimore Adams, 85, of 1987 Hilton Road, Burlington, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Pulaski, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. Robert Neal Adams, and the daughter of Mr. William C. Gallimore and Mrs. Marietta McPeak Adams, both deceased. She was a writer, and a member of The Burlington Writers Club, The Alamance County Arts Center, The Alamance County Historical Society and The Carroll County Historical Society. She was a member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Sue Adams of Graham; one son, Mr. Samuel Carlyle Adams of Raleigh; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Piedmont Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Morton R. Kurtz, pastor.

Mr. Robert Lee Smith
PELHAM — Mr. Robert Lee Smith, of 3663 Chandler Mill Road, died Monday evening, Nov. 6, 2000, at Annie Penn Hospital.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mariah Adams Smith, who survives. He was a member of Bluestone Baptist Church and served in the Missionary Group No. 1. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and was retired from J.W. Wyatt Corporation. He was a member of the American Legion, James Rudd Post 199, having served as past commander and post commander of the 14th District Department Executive Committee of the State of North Carolina. He was a member of the Pelham Lodge 571 (PHA) F.&A.M.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Phyllis (Barry) Kay McCain of Browns Summit; four sons, Mr. Steve (Fran) Ray Smith of Greensboro, Mr. Rodney Lee Smith and Mr. Jerome (Linda) Anthony Smith, both of Pelham and Mr. Robert (Diane) Timothy Smith of Danville, Va.; an adopted sister, Ms. Mae Harris of Hackensack, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary Sue Sarvis Tessier
GRAHAM — Mrs. Mary Sue Sarvis Tessier, 79, of 6300 Cotton Road, Snow Camp, died at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A native of Horry County, S.C., she was the daughter of Mr. Samuel J. Sarvis and Mrs. Myrtle Hughs Sarvis Carroll, both deceased. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where she served in transportation and nursing. She was a retired waitress.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Carrie Chait of Miami and two brothers, Mr. Joseph Sarvis of Greensboro and Mr. Hugh Sarvis of Stoney Creek.
A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham.
The family will remain at the funeral home following the service.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Mr. James A. “Tony” Settlemyre, 46, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000.
A native of Greensboro, he was a long-time resident of Florida where he was employed by the Dade County School System.
Survivors include his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. John W. Settlemyre of Burlington; a sister, Ms. Betty Kim Settlemyre of Burlington; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Faw of Hickory.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Ridge United Church of Christ by the Rev. Phil Hardy and Dr. G. Melvin Palmer.

Mr. Forrest Withers
RUFFIN — Mr. Forrest Withers, of 710 Big Oak Farm Road, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at his home.
Born Feb. 28, 1906, in Caswell County, he was the son of Mr. George Withers and Mrs. Sadie Bushnell Withers, both deceased. He was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Male Chorus. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired farmer.
He was the last survivor in his immediate family.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at Red Hill Baptist Church in Pelham by the Rev. Gregory Hopkins. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 this evening at Fulton Funeral Home Chapel in Yanceyville.

Mrs. Martha Leona Lindley Womble
SILER CITY — Mrs. Martha Leona Lindley Womble, 79, of 900 West Dolphin St., died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at Sun Bridge Care Facilities in Siler City.
A native of Chatham County, she was the wife of Mr. Curtis B. Womble of Pittsboro. She was a lifelong member of South Fork Friends Meeting and a member of the Missionary Society. She was employed at May’s Hosiery Mill in Burlington and retired from Kellwood Manufacturing in Siler City.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Wayne Lindley and Mr. Walker Lindley and a sister, Ms. Annie Lee Lindley.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at South Fork Friends Meeting in Snow Camp by the Rev. Jon Reece. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

REIDSVILLE — Mr. Curtis David Parker Sr., of Reidsville, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 8, 2000, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation of Reidsville.
A native of Caswell County, he was the a member of Jones Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include four daughters, Ms. Dorothy Fountain, Mrs. Patsy (Billy) P. Blackwell, Ms. Catherine Parker and Ms. Viola Parker, all of Reidsville; two sons, Mr. William D. (Florence) Parker and Mr. Curtis (Judy) Parker Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Helen P. Cummings of Summerfield and Ms. Mable Watt of Alabama; a brother, Mr. Gordon (Helen) Parker of Reidsville; 25 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Raymond Dixon
HILLSBOROUGH — Mr. Raymond Dixon died Nov. 9, 2000, after a long illness.
Born Sept. 14, 1942, in Person County, he was the husband of Mrs. Frances Swann Dixon, who survives, and the son of Mr. Jesse Dixon and Mrs. Bessie Dixon, who survive. He worked at Waste Industries of Durham.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Japonica Dixon of Graham and Ms. Muriel Dixon of Charlotte; two sons, Mr. Joell Dixon of the home and Mr. Raymond (Debbie) Dixon of Durham; one brothers, Mr. Nathaniel (Barbara) Dixon of Hillsborough; four sisters, Mrs. Annie (Roy) Burt of Hillsborough, Mrs. Claudine (William) Avery of Durham, Ms. Dorothy Savoy of High Point and Ms. Carolyn Howard of Burlington; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
